I also challenge Hypershell, but he seems uninterested...  :'(

I'm still taking care of odds and ends around my new home, not to mention catching up with all that went down on the internet during my absence, so I do apologize if a few posts have slipped past my attention.

You want it, you got it.

(now I'm just debating whether I want to change team members...)

He must be.  He's about the only Maverick besides Sigma who took notice that there is more to X than a direct specs comparison.  That's something most baddies didn't get through their skulls even as late as X3.

Hoo boy, time for Hyper to play a lot of catch-up...

But Omega is Dr. Vile's slave? Vile succeeded where Wily failed?
More like both have their own methods, parallel branches along the same tree.  Recall, if you will, that even without Dark Elf (one of many Sigma Virus derivatives), Omega still resonates the same energy signature as Dark Elf.

I'm not convinced that Wily is "failing" with Zero.  He aptly demonstrated in X6 (and is further implied in X4) that if he wanted to capture Zero, nothing's stopping him.  For some reason or another, it seems to me that he wants to take a more passive role.

Quote
After all, we just established that losing the virus after awakening returns him to hunter state.
In what way does getting one's ass kicked by X constitute losing the virus?  We know from Alia that "killed" qualifies under that, but not so with merely "beaten".

Quote from: Justify
That scene always felt out of character to me - remorse isn't like Wily, and neither is gratitude - so maybe it's just that the idea of the whole Roboenza episode being a test appeals to me..
Personally, I'm still wide open to holding the Quint future as valid (Wily sincerely reforms, then re-evaluates his life after encountering his past evil self and betraying Rock).  If such were the case, it would only be natural for Classic Wily to be a bit more compassionate than X-series Wily.  I will admit that 10's ending was unexpected, though.

The question of what Wily is trying to accomplish in 21XX seems to be everlasting.  While I believe he's going less the world domination route and focusing more on his personal rivalry, it is simply my own personal speculation, and none of the recent info seems to impact it too much.

Sigma finding Zero's evil form incomplete is a poor translation thing.
Man, you really can't trust X5's translations, huh?  Now you have me wondering how Zero responds to the Light capsules.

Quote from: Zan
I can't be stressed enough that the change to good wasn't planned by Wily.
I'm not convinced of that.  It's possible that the Hunter stage was intentional even if Wily's ultimate end for Zero turns out to be evil, as a "learning process" to aid Zero's growth.  Zero, like X, learns from experience in battle; what better way to ensure X does not challenge Zero prematurely than for Zero to gain experience on X's side?  Note that Learning System attacks have appeared as part of Omega's arsenal, as well as seemingly being the base from which several of Awakened Zero's attacks are derived.

Quote
I like how you tried to explain such specifics as "during missions." I think you might be on to something with the damage to Zero's systems. If a defensive breach not only can promote infection, but further damage can actually promote the virus leaving his systems, the importance of Sigma's knockout punch can be highlighted in relation to Zero's reversion to hunter state in X2 and X5.
Might also go a ways to explaining how nobody at Hunter Base noticed.  The Hunters have been aware of the virus since X3 and have been researching it since X5 at the absolute latest.  While it's true that the virus can often defy their analysis, especially with Zero, one does have to wonder how nothing even remotely suspicious (sans antivirus reactions) ever turned up while Zero was "chilling" at home.  Even if Zero himself showed no reaction wouldn't they notice if viral infections were following the same trail as him?  One only continues to raise eyebrows at that with X8's talks of the Hunters testing New Gen viral immunity.

Basically, if Zero is only spreading the virus in areas that are already combat zones to begin with, it would explain a lot.  Would fit nicely with my above question about him reverting at defeat, as well.  It's still conjecture, but it does fit nicely.

But then we arrive at the same question, to what end?  If the Hunter personna was established as permanent, others should be able to be written as permanent as well.  If it is indeed the ideal state for Zero to learn new abilities, then that would lend more credit to such a fall-back upon defeat as being intentional.

Quote from: Marshmallow Man
If they had just let those first mavericks be the results of various chip errors or *gasp* free will itself, there wouldn't be a problem here... but alas.
I personally would really like to know what kind of chip error-to-virus ratio we're dealing with in X1.  In playing MHX and re-examining The Day Of Sigma, the emphasis I'm seeing on X's worrying is that first-gen Reploids, in general, tend to be more ruthless than X is (X's compassion is always his defining trait, but X1 'roids strike me as less "human" in personality than later characters).  When you remove sympathy for others, it's not a small leap to think of disposing the weak to advance the superior race, or "sacrifice for evolution" is perfectly acceptable.

Quote from: Zan
But having the majority of Irregulars caused by defected thought circuits removes the special aspect from VAVA.
I think the MHX statement of "someone who can go Maverick of their own accord" references Sigma's position as a leader as much as it does viral manipulation.  Playing through MHX, I took notice that virtually nobody seems to actually believe in Sigma's cause.  The bosses are mostly following Sigma for the sake of following their leader (Spark Mandrill, Armored Armadillo), occasionally reaping some personal benefits (Chill Penguin, Launch Octopus).  Flame Mammoth is basically Vile on a leash.  Then there's Storm Eagle and Sting Chameleon who are seemingly being forced.  Boomer Kuwanger is about the only one who actually thinks about what's going on, and he's more centered on X's combat abilities than anything else.

Vile is unique in that he, like Sigma, was willing to challenge the status of the world.  The others who had gone Maverick did so only by Sigma's manipulation, whether the virus was or was not part of that manipulation is irrelevant.  One way or the other they would never have rebelled without Sigma.  With Vile, however, Sigma merely turned him loose and let him do as he pleased.

Quote from: Marshmallow Man
Probably. They didn't supply a picture showing exactly what they meant in the book. Zero's insides don't look quite the same way when shown in X5, but he still seems to have a upper chest gem and a head gem underneath, so I imagine the vague idea holds true. That page is the only place that ever talks about them, so far as I know.
I feel compelled to point out that X4's designs are identical to those of the armor kit figures, which are the same between X and Zero (barring faces and chest gem colors).  In X5 they probably felt the need to offer something a little more unique.

Real men(and WOMEN) use regular X... even in X6.

*hugs his Thumper plushie*

*a'hem*  Anyways, my favorite armor is X1.

Not MHX's, X1.  Back when the Spiral Charge was 3 shots + shockwave, capable of downing a Mega Tortoise in a single blast (provided you were firing point-blank).  In MHX, Z-Buster or no Z-Buster, you're never taking more than half of Mega Tortoise's health without a special weapon.

to my knowledge, you NEED the leg upgrade to reach Dr. Light's buster upgrade.
Correct as far as I know.  None of X's weapons will stall him in midair, so you can't physics-exploit your way there in Vile/PS1 style.

However...
Quote
it's the weaker one, so that's the one i went with.
Now that I'm finally equipped with a PSP myself, I feel compelled to point out that this is a glaring half-truth.  The Spiral Charge and Z-Buster are in fact equal in total attack strength.  The only difference is that the Spiral Charge divides that strength into two shots, giving the Z-Buster the advantage against bosses (barrier mechanics allow only one shot to hit).  But the Spiral Charge's spread can be useful against stage enemies.  Either way, pit both against a Mega Tortoise, and they'll do the exact same damage (sadly you'd need both COMBINED to match the SNES original -AC ).

For practicality's sake, the Z-Buster doesn't really make the game any easier.  First of all it can only be obtained extremely late in the game, when you have only D-Rex, Velgauder, and Sigma left in your way.  By comparison having the Spiral Charge the entire game would be much easier (ESPECIALLY from the standpoint of charging special weapons; charged Rolling Shield is positively broken in this game).  Second, while the Z-Buster technically out-damages weakness weapons against bosses (4 vs 3), the extremely long charge time diminishes its usefulness.  It will only save you three hits (8 vs 11), and you will spend much, much more time charging for those 8 Z-Buster hits than you would rapid-firing your 11 special weapon hits.

And since that's your only reason for having to hack the save file...yeah.  A legitimate Z-Buster run otherwise devoid of power-ups would actually be far more difficult, seeings how your arms are unenhanced until the second to last stage in the game.

Technically there has not been a single title in which HD has impacted gameplay; I've never heard of the 360/PS3 game that does not function on an SDTV.

You're probably thinking of the power difference between the consoles.  In that case, STH4 as I understand it is using pre-rendered 2D visuals.  That should pose no problem, processing-wise (see Muramasa).  I'd be more concerned about the Wii's limited storage capacity, having only a 512MB flash and all.

I still like a levitating Dragon/Steel... That's only weak to Fighting moves...
Dialga was SO close...

But yeah, Fire/Dragon is unseen yet.
Well, given that Levitate would be its only edge over Dialga, we'd basically be looking at a repeat of the Flygon/Garchomp situation we have now.  I personally would rather see a levitating Fire/Dragon.

Seriously, I don't know what they were thinking with Garchomp.  I'd almost swear they were trying to troll the fan-tournament players; if there is such a thing as a borderline between OU and Uber, then Garchomp is the textbook definition of it.

I think this is actually a count against an Elf Wars RPG title. RPGs normally have teams of three or more. How would that work with a final boss who by the canon was only defeated by two people?
I shouldn't have to educate you about the differences between story presentations and gameplay mechanics; remember Scarface challenging X to combat?

Surely Omega fought (read: slaughtered) many Reploids.  That X and Zero delivered the final blow does mean that others cannot be involved in the final battle.  Likewise, XCM cutscenes show only our Class S Hunters against Great Redips; didn't stop anyone else from participating.

And who says Omega needs to be the last boss?  I, frankly, would find that very anti-climactic.  By Weil's own words, Omega never reached his full power during Elf Wars.  So one way or the other we're dealing with something devastating, but not up to the level of Z3.  Weil could have made other last-ditch efforts, or perhaps those backing him weren't willing to throw in the towel.  Omega's defeat is surely key to the Elf Wars' end, but I think there's room for a "last story" scenario afterwards.

Zero / Re: Story Retcons?
« on: May 09, 2010, 02:34:28 AM »
What one needs to understand before drawing that conclusion is that there is such a thing as a body-only resurrection.  Such is the case with Metal Shark Player's abilities, in which through illegal DNA resurrection, he calls back the form of a dead Maverick but is in fact controlling said Maverick; the dead Maverick's will is not part of the equation.  X, likewise, does the same when he obtains MSP's powers.  Also, there's Maverick Hunter X, which leaves the indication that boss revival is a simple matter of "animating the body", as X finds Launch Octopus devoid of personality when they rematch.  It's a sharp contrast to the Zero series, in which Neo Arcadian bosses are fully conscious and capable of conversing upon revival.

I'm not sure what the earliest point is that we can say a "lost soul" was called back to the world of the living (barring Sigma which we know is some manner of virus kerfunkery).  In Zero's case, the Control Chip survived containing his personality, so in a sense he was not truly dead, rather his brain was simply unplugged.  And that's the problem; we're dealing with artificial beings, they can be powered down, dismantled, bodies broken, and as long as their program is physically salvageable, repaired and reactivated just as easily.  "Plucking a cyber-elf" would mean we're looking for the point at which their personality program is impossible to recover from their broken body, and the games don't usually go into that level of detail.  Case in point: Vile.

Zero / Re: Megaman Zero: Command Mission

All great ideas, although in all honesty I don't see why an "Elf Wars" title couldn't just be an X Command Mission 2.  I mean, X is as much a part of Elf Wars as Zero (in fact I'm quite interested in X's actions during that time frame, since according to the Zero Collection website he's supposed to be opposing Project Elpizo from the get-go).

Of course, if they wanted to do "Zero Command Mission", they could just pull an X7 and have X at a desk job for the majority.  Nevertheless, an Elf Wars game should have X on the battlefield at some point.  It's already established both in-game and in drama tracks that he and Zero double-team Omega.

Am I the only one thinking that jerking your head = offline game lag?

Not sure if you were talking about the 3DS or potential PSP2 (Sony did say that their 3D focus is on consoles and not handhelds, though).  I'm sure the 3DS will just use the screen-shifting doohicky to work with a particular angle.  Contrary to Nintendo's DSiXL marketing, handhelds don't really need a wide viewing angle (or at least not backlit ones; I'm sure we have pre-GBASP memories).

Aren't we still in a recession?  Sales dropped for EVERYTHING in the last quarter.  You cannot look at every bump in the road as a sign of Nintendo's apocalypse.  Call me when Sony and Microsoft can show life-to-date sales that are at all respectable by comparison.

Ok, sorry, but whenever I see someone say this I just can't see where they are coming from. Lets make a list shall we?

See anything wrong with the way some people see things compared to the actual facts?
Taiyo, I love you.  I thought I was the only one.

I did a blog post on IGN a while back about the constant "Nintendo abandoned us" whining.  An excerpt from that pretty much sums up my thoughts:

"...most of the "core activity" we saw from Nintendo in the last two console generations was sports spinoffs, party games, and the like, most of which would these days be considered casual. Back then we weren't threatened by the "C word". Even the SNES had a few with games like Mario Paint. And yes, we loved those too. But when you get into the really, really "core" titles, there aren't actually that many, made evident by several defenders of NSMBWii who I've seen refer to it as SMB5 (World, a Super NES game, being 4). For a console only just now entering its 4th year, Nintendo has delivered quite a bit to satisfy that oldschool epic craving we all share. If anything was lost in their casual audience it was the Mario Party line, which is a minigame compilation, the most over-saturated game genre you'll currently find on the Wii. So what's all the complaining about?"

Basically, see a lot of this as nothing but a matter of perception, due to such things as Miis replacing Mario in spinoffs.  Casual games always existed.  It was only in this generation that we started looking at them as not being directed towards us (or, at the very least, caring that they weren't).

I understood when these comments came between Brawl and Punch-Out!!.  There WAS a distressing lack of Nintendo titles back then.  Mario Kart Wii, the only expected "heavy hitter" in the interim, did not live up to expectations (the CPU is terrible and the multiplayer is stripped-down).  We had every right to demand better.  But a lot of it was a fundamental shift in Nintendo's marketing.  Brawl saw a long, long buildup (virtually the entire lifespan of the console, in fact) met with frustration over delays and hype mountains all but impossible to actually meet, and Nintendo at that point made a shift in their marketing tactics.  They don't announce their projects as early anymore, so naturally it means there was a cutoff at some point.  Brawl-to-Punch-Out!! was it, and some fans have obviously not adjusted.

Despite we still have four hardcore titles on the way, in addition to Punch-Out!!, Excitebots, and NSMBWii.

The reason I play games is to try something new
...no offense, but you'll forgive me if I'm wondering what the hell you're doing on a MegaMan board?

Yeaa, that's why I don't even bother with them shiny pokemon, being honest or not, your going to get told that you hacked, if you get a legit shiny, then its a bounus in my book.
If you have only one people will admire you; it's when half your team is shiny that they start raising eyebrows.

Also, there's no legitimate way to "rig" a shiny legendary, so if by some chance you do manage to get one, the odds of it being of proper Nature/IVs are astronomically bad.  It'd be like going into battle with a Hidden Power Ice Raikou.

I liked X7. That's right, I said it! MEGA MAN X7! It had good 3D sections, with some annoying parts thrown in, but mostly fun, so I like it.
Considering your descriptor, I actually do agree.  Most of X7's failures (aside from X's whining) came from pussyfooting with the 3D/2D blend.  Certain mechanics are clearly meant for one mode and do not translate well into the other (auto-lock and several of Zero's attacks).  Plus, Stonekong excepted, I find that the 2D level design of the game was pretty terrible.  So, yeah, if you look at the 3D segments, X7 isn't that bad, as long as you can live with Zero's paper-thin Hadangeki.  In particuar I enjoyed Anteater's level.

And of course, there is something to be said for huge rifles, Jedi reflect sabers, and nuke-sized charged shots.  X7 had some definite strong points, arsenal-wise.

Gaming / Re: Do RPGs need complex plots?
« on: May 06, 2010, 12:29:51 AM »
You kinda would have to define "complex", seeings how even the supposed simple storylines tend to have a twist or two (and then you have games such as MegaMan which are simple unto themselves but get extremely complex when tying them all together; so in light of that how does one classify Command Mission?).

On the whole I'd say no, but it does help.  It kinda depends on how the gameplay and combat system go.  There's something to be said for a nice, epic story.  But there are other ways of selling an RPG, certainly.

MegaMan X6 (PS1) - Anyone who knows me ought to know that.  Combat in this game just feels a lot more large-scale than in any other, excellently portaying the feel that X and Zero are a force to be reckoned with.  Corrected quite a bit of the new concepts that X5 didn't quite nail on the first try, as well (Parts, ranking, dual armors, Zero's boss AI...).  Overall, my favorite main-series X game.

Godzilla Unleashed (Wii) - Unbeknownst to Daemon Hatfield of IGN, this actually is a separate development project from the PS2 version (a Save The Earth edit; and he also needs to research how many analogue sticks are on the remote/nunchuck controller).  But besides that, IT'S FREAKING PLAYABLE BIOLLANTE, PEOPLE!!!

ActRasier 2 (SNES) - Generally considered the inferior of the two titles due to being ball-breakingly hard and axing the town-building simulations.  But the soundtrack is amazing and it's nice for a heavenly character to actually have wings.  Well worth the practice it takes to conquer.  Could have stood less political correctness in the localization, though (7 Deadly Sins in a video game?  NEVER!).

Shadow The Hedgehog - While I maintain that requiring 10 playthroughs to reach the Last Story was a completely bone-headed move, this game is among the finer of the post-Adventure 3D hedgehog outings.  Finally reaching a stage where you can (and in fact must) freely Chaos Control without worrying about missions is plenty worth it.

Sonic and the Black Knight - I just got this game last week, and it has me utterly convinced that the fans will sustain the "Sonic cycle" regardless of game quality (somewhat understandable when the franchise has been "annualized").  It rocks, it controls far better than Secret Rings, and in exchange for never having to see the phrase, "don't get any spheres" on the screen, the worst mission you'll ever find is avoiding townspeople.  Once.  Seriously, if you have tolerated ANY other Sonic game from Heroes onward, I don't see any reason to not pick this up.

Hey, this was the only version of Mega Man Legends that I was able to play. I know people here will spit acid at me for saying this, but I actually enjoyed this game. It may not be as good as the PS1 version, and I really do want to play that version of the game just so I can compare the two versions myself, but the N64 version was the ONLY version of Legends that I was able to play. ~_~
There's nothing wrong with accepting MM64 when your other options are not available (which is why I maintain that Capcom needs to get it onto VC).  It's inferior by comparison to the disc-based systems, yes, but it's still L1, and L1 rocks unconditionally.

Not being able to get a druid in Radiant Dawn was disappointing... That better change in the next FE on the Wii/whatever console comes out next.
There's a whole lot in Radiant Dawn that's disappointing, character-wise.  Too many characters just don't have the availability they need.  I don't care that there are no generic Druids, but was it really necessary for Pelleas to not get off his butt until 4-E-2?

Oh well.  Still my favorite Fire Emblem.

The DS game was a step back I think. The GBA games had the perfect visuals for Fire Emblem, why not keep them?
Because somebody decided that class-swapping was a good idea, and so any sense of personalization to the sprites beyond hair color was abolished.  I don't mind the "pseudo-model" thing, but palette-swapping to identify your characters is just pitiful.

I love that they brought Shadow Dragon here, but you really can tell that it's an NES game.  For all the visuals it still feels primitive.  There's exceedingly little character development, bad news for a story-heavy genre.  Also, why is half of the new stuff only available by getting most of your party killed?  If you honestly sucked that badly, the characters you might recruit in the side-quests are not going to help you.

And the arena is like Rush Marining against Dive Man.  It sounds great in theory, but...just no.

The above not withstanding, I still wouldn't mind seeing a remake of FE3.  I mean, come on, if you're going to tell us Marth's story, tell us the WHOLE story.

2495
Much as I'd LIKE to see the GBA slot, if this thing is truly a DS successor then that makes the GBA slot 2-generation-old hardware.  If Big N was willing to do that then the DS would have been playing GBC carts (not that I'd argue, just saying).

Wow.  October.  MUCH earlier than I was expecting.  That probably refers to Japanese release, but we'll see.

X / Re: Zero turned good by the Sigma Virus
« on: April 17, 2010, 08:47:44 PM »
The question would then be; what is Wily trying to accomplish? It's out of character to restrict himself to a local region, and we have to question if Wily would retry the virus thing again after Rockman10. He had some sort of change of heart, providing everyone with a cure for the Roboenza.
Then how do we get viral Mavericks prior to Zero's being released to begin with?  If we're still holding to that presupposition, then either Wily DID try it again, or some manner of mechanical/program failure is to blame.  It can't be outside tampering if Zero was undisturbed.

Quote
(What about X2 and Magne Centipede?)
That simply means that Sigma (which is only logical) and probably the X-Hunters knew how to use it before the Maverick Hunters knew what it was, that's all.

Quote
I think we shouldn't forget that in all other cases, damage counters viral control. Which is something we have to reconcile with this new info.. Damaging Zero returns him to his hunter self, but never facilitates a return to the violent uncontrollable one.
I'd put forward the theory that the Hunter is an intentional stage of Zero's development.  His Awakening, according to Sigma, was never completed, so he would fall back to the last "healthy" state.

Nevertheless that is a good question.  It's something we were always fuzzy on even before Inti's new timeline, though.  Whether it's an intentional safeguard of some kind, or the Awakening is not taking hold the way it should, is anyone's guess.

Something else we need to reconcile with this is from MMZ's own world: The copy body.  Sooner or later, the non-viral Hunter exists.  Whether that can occur naturally or is the result of Ciel's great grandmother doing some serious re-coding, that's guesswork.  But given Ciel's failure to re-create X, I'm not leaning much towards the latter.

I have a feeling that the Control Chip is key to this.  It is the lone piece of X1 Zero to survive, and judging by Serges is absolutely not replaceable, so whatever "growth" X1 Zero was experiencing had to be centered there.  At the same time, removing Zero's consciousness for research would mean removing that chip, would it not?  And without it, Weil has himself a "bloodthirsty God of Destruction"?

It seems to me that the initial modification to Zero's "Hunter" state was a permanent alteration irregardless of the virus's continued presence; similar to X installing the dash ability into his unarmored state.  Something that, from day one, was part of the plan, just not fully installed before the robot was activated.

Quote
Then why can Wily not instruct Zero after the initial infection?
Who's to say he doesn't?  In X4, X5, and X6, Wily is in some manner speaking to Zero.  X5 is especially curious, telling Zero "what you must do", when the process of Awakening has already started.  The Awakened state may simply be the point at which Zero takes those words as instruction rather than some crazy voice in his head.

As for X2, although how similar a state we're looking at to X5 is rather questionable, it's always possible that Zero is only sticking with Sigma because it's the surest way to confront X.  There may not be anything more to it than that.
