X / Re: Do you like Axl?
« on: July 04, 2010, 07:10:16 AM »
Hell no. Because at least to me, everything that Axl represents seems like something that could have been a possible development for an already established character, like say....Dynamo.

I mean, how do we go from a guy like Dynamo, who had decent development as an antagonist who rivals X and Zero in combat ability (and certainly has enough common sense to retreat), yet clearly has his own agenda to...nothing at all? And in his place, we get this new kid who comes out of nowhere, and is the impetus of a new plotline that just does more to ditch everything that X5 and X6 were building up towards?

That was......objectionable! -AC

Dynamo is an annoyance and little else.  In design, he's a bastardization of X and Zero thrown into a blender.  In gameplay, he's a pushover.  In story, he's a jerk whose Robin Spitz-Swallows survival rate makes it a miracle that X and Zero retain their sanity.  His "combat ability" being remotely comparable to X and Zero is complete rubbish.  If he's not even a Hunter, not even KNOWN by Signas, then how in the hell does he get a mission efficiency rating higher than Zero?  Especially when his only priority is his own ass.  He barely has any place as a meaningful antagonist (gluttons for punishment have some value, I suppose) and CERTAINLY has no place as a player.

I don't dislike Axl, but I must admit that I'll always regard X and Zero as "the" dynamic duo of the Hunters.  Nevertheless, he does provide a fresh perspective, especially in X8, when you get to see a new character confront the old nemeses (in one game he already gets sick of Vile, you can't help but laugh at that).  In gameplay, he's been a bit of trial-and-error, but I think that both X8 and ZXA offered some strong possibilities.  Incorporate double-pistols into his default attacks (even if only for aesthetics), and make shape-shifting the basis of his special attacks instead of some limited stage gimmick, and he'd be set.

Quote
To me, Axl does even more to represent what went wrong with Inafune-less Rockman X than even X6. So if he gets retconned away, I won't have any problem with such at all.
Excuse me, but it's not as if Inafune-equipped Rockman X hasn't suffered its own pitfalls.  X5 was horrendous in gameplay and badly presented in story.  MHX is ugly as sin (in terms of character models, anyway) and watered down one of the best buster upgrades the series ever saw to half strength.  And X6, while not the best way to broaden the series audience, happens to rock a lot of socks as a challenge for the hardcore fans, not to mention features some of the finest large-scale enemy battles and SNES remixes that the series has seen, and the fact that you finally get to kick the recurring villain while he's down.

And know this: Whatever X5 was building towards, Inafune had no intention of continuing.  No shred of evidence has ever suggested that Wily's appearance would ever have anything to do with the Zero series.  From the Sigma Virus's defeat, to Zero's death, to Wily's confirmed yet off-screen and unresolved involvement, X5's story was exceedingly badly executed.  Inafune let it pass because all he wanted was to end the series, and it was evidently his assumption that the series dies when Zero dies (he's probably right in that regard).  With all due respect, screw him.  At least X6 had the decency to show us that Wily dropped out versus X5 referencing his involvement without ever having him make an appearance in the first place.  And while Zero is my favorite character, the Zero series was never and will never be a substitute for the X-series.

Music, design, weapon, character.  Doesn't matter how you compare, Storm Eagle wins every time.

Mario Kart Wii, replaying 150cc enough times to *FINALLY* overcome the constant item nuking and get that damn 60-point perfect score, and STILL not making the one-star Rank for some God-forsaken reason.

At this point I consider it perfectly fair and reasonable to hack infinite Star Mans.

I'm gonna hop online in Brawl very shortly.  If anyone wants a match, that'd be great.  I might Basic Brawl to kill time, but I'll be sure and check in every few rounds.

Depends on which Mammoth.  I'd bet Kraken over MHX Mammoth, but X1 Mammoth over Kraken.

I dunno about a mech, but for some reason I'm getting an image of Giant Mask Link stomping through Clock Town...

It's not just destructible environments. The point was that the mechs were pretty much as tall as regular buildings, which offered them a kind of "battlefield" to traverse, along with stuff like smashing each other against buildings.
All very true.

But in The Big O, the scenery itself played alot of the action. From the Megadeuses' destruction, to the way the Big O always showed up at the places and ran away by tearing apart the earth under him to escape... alot of that could be played in the big boss battles.
I think this is true of most stories that involve giant combatants.  The scenery is what offers the sense of scale, and it's just not believable that two clashing titans are going to leave the local trees, buildings, and even ground/rock formations untouched.  Destructible environments go a long way in that particular context.

Oh, man. Big O would be an awesome game, but honestly, there's no way to make slow mech fights cool anymore.
Godzilla Unleashed disagrees, for heavy impacts, lots of projectile/beam weapons, and unimaginable amounts of collateral damage make for an awesome game.  Pretty tough to argue with Kiryu and Mecha King Ghidorah (even if they do pale before the awesome colossus that is Biollante).

Seriously, if Pipeworks just added somebody who can debug audio and program proper water splashing effects, it would be perfection.  Of course, I don't see performing combos as a 50-meter-tall mech/creature as being believable.  But chucking a building at your opponent works just as well.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, the pic borockman posted...
That girl in there, is Iris.
I think you and I BOTH reversed each other's Irises. >w<

COG clarified that for me already.  And, as I said, my Battle Revolution Iris is cuter.  Than the anime girl.

Eh, who DOES know what we're fighting for these days?

I saw the anime character lineup elsewhere already.  Didn't catch any names, though.

I was always wondering if the "Master Hand" line in the Sound Test had an actual use...

Yep, news to me.  Of course, thanks to SAKURAAAAAI, there is no way that I'd forsake Mewtwo when returning to Melee.  Even Master Hand won't change that.

Probably the first (Anime) series that derives from using the game's female character...at least i think
Oh, THAT girl (that's what I get for skimming).  Eh...in that case, my Battle Revolution Iris is cuter anyway. 8)

X / Re: Zero's now an OCR Mascot!!
« on: July 02, 2010, 04:07:36 AM »
Indeed.  OBJECTION MAN makes a valid point in that most anything that pops up on there and DOES resemble the original piece gets struck down.  OCR in general tends to favor very loose and complex derivatives, as if that's somehow what is required to create something pleasant to listen to.  I often cite Darkesword's Beamsaber Beat v1 as an example (ironic that I wind up defending a piece of work to its own author).  It was awesome, they rejected it, v2 was somehow even MORE awesome, and they finally took it with a lukewarm and highly critical attitude.

I still say it kicks the [parasitic bomb] out of any other SNES X-series remix, especially fan-based.  And I normally don't even like medleys.

Not hate, just the general "90% of everything is crap" logic.  I believe we went over this when some rumors were flying around about them wanting to do one of those classic revival soundtracks (Sonic or MegaMan?  I forget).  OCR occasionally dishes out some nice listening music, but not consistently.  And usually their hits are sit-down-and-listen music; exceedingly rarely have I known them to create anything that is passable as in-game music.  There is a difference.

I always loved Treble Boost more than the Rush Adapters for some reason...  I dunno, I just feel that Rush belongs as his own entity.

Treble Boost is lots of fun, but yeah, you gotta watch that energy.  Also gotta watch your B button if playing MM10 with a Wii remote, seeings how that'll drop you out of the air real fast. O:<

I guess it's all going to be super techno and remixes that resemble nothing of the original pieces anyway, since it's OCR. Sigh.
Well, it's not as if OCR butchers EVERYTHING in their albums.  There's...

You might want to specify "traditional" Star Fox.  We're talking about a game with a touch screen, and we don't want anyone thinking that you're endorsing Star Fox Command's controls.  *shudder*

Well, I did delete it and said "oh what the hell, let them do it" >_>
Not as if it's any different from any other internet debate.  I just keep at it 'till it stops reducing my boredom.

I do consider Zelda continuity to be something of an exercise in futility, but that's because I'm naturally stingy with details.  It depends on what context you're thinking in.  Once you learn to loosen up and glaze over the rough spots, it can be interesting to brainstorm about.

It sounds to me like he's describing an analogue version of the Metroid Prime Hunters setup.  Not my favorite config, but it does work.  Pit's obviously a bit more nimble than Samus, though, so I'm wondering how dashing/dodging will feel.
