Gaming / Re: Nintendo Wi-Fi Friend Codes (under new management)
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:44:16 PM »
I forget my current HR but I know I'm still in single digits.  Maybe 7-ish.

And yeah, I'm pretty well hooked.  But I only got the game last week, and lots of real-life crap has been happening.  >.>

Posted on: January 05, 2011, 08:47:16 PM
I think DS friend codes are saved to the game instead of the individual handheld.
Dunno how I missed this last time, but while DS friend codes are saved to the game, they check the ID of the system you're playing on every time you connect (Nintendo evidently forgot they had this technology on the Wii, as all Wi-Fi Wii games outright forbid transferring save data).

If you play on a different system and connect to Wi-Fi, the game will reset your Friend Code, after a warning message.  However, if you previous DS is AT ALL workable (ie: busted screen, or something), you can transfer your Wi-Fi ID to a new system in order to preserve your codes.

'Bout [tornado fang]ing time.
The press at all times finding something to complain about (before specs: it's underpowered; after specs: battery life is too short; I can't be the only one who sees a conflict of interest there), I found it interesting that a few editors made negative remarks about the return of codes in any form, even in spite of the evolution to console-based.  They wanted the system to be account-based, identified by username, rather than console-based, identified by code.

And you know what?  I'm GLAD it isn't.  Identifying by username means that if anyone else in the entire freaking world took yours, you're out of luck without attaching some random string of numbers to the end anyway.  As a late PSP adopter I punched in about a dozen different Ultraman and Godzilla references into PSN before finally succumbing to that.

As far as replacing/upgrading units goes, Nintendo already had the foresight to include Wi-Fi ID transfers with the original DS, and they've already stated that there will be DSiWare transfers from DSi/XL to the 3DS.  So there should be no problem there.

Put down Monster Hunter Tri (Wii) long enough to dive full force into Rockman Complete Works (PSP).  Completed the gallery, and all that jazz.  I gotta say, besides the lack of Blues, it kicks the crap out of Powered Up.  Here's hoping they release the others.

Put the cursor on Navi Mode, hold the Select button and start that Mode.
Thank you!  I was wondering where the hell the arcade music was...

My list now includes my first PSN game EVER.

Mega Man.  On PSP, seeings how I lack a PS3.

At last, I have all the spiffy PS1 extras, complete with menus I cannot possibly read.  Oh well, many thanks to Vix for RPM's handy-dandy menu guide.

"Friend codes are now specific to each 3DS console, not each game. Exchanging friend codes will allow you to check your friend's list at any time to see who's online and what they're playing."

Congratulations, Nintendo, your network planners have grown brain stems.

eShop for 3DS, DSi, GB, and GBC games is as we all knew in the works, but will not be ready for launch.  Not surprising to us early Wii adopters. :|

Face toys, Mii software, and a couple of those augmented-reality cards from the earlier trailers will be included.

I knew the $300 tag was a load of crap.  So hooray for that.

Very, VERY disappointed that they can't even confirm Kid Icarus as arriving before E3.  What the crap, Nintendo?  Nevertheless, I highly anticipate the time-traveling Rabbids.

Ok, I'm not even interested in Dead or Alive but this is pretty awesome.

Man, that makes Brawl's Metroid levels look like a pile of puke.  I hadn't considered DoA before, but I may not be able to resist a game that has Ridley raking the walls with my enemy's face.

It's still highly speculative, though I will grant you that the general unfamiliarity with program life objects as of MM8 would likely prevent anything more definitive popping up.

That said, even if we were to definitively establish Evil Energy as having its own volition, that doesn't link it to the Sigma Virus.  Cyber Elves are linked to the Sigma Virus because they were loosely derived from it.  Same for the Nightmare.  We have no grounds for assuming the same of Evil Energy to Sigma Virus, and until that changes, I believe "narrative trend" remains an accurate description of any such similarities.

Rockman Series / Re: Was Dr. Light the real evil in the series?
« on: January 20, 2011, 03:18:03 AM »
This is kinda like saying "Bowser is not really evil, the deceiving bastard Mario is!". It started as a joke, really, but I guess some things are hard to tell on the internet (or some things get taken way too seriously), huh?
Peach is evil.  Mario just gets conned into doing her dirty work.

Anyways, on the topic of killing the villain, a lot of that likely has to do with the differing atmospheres of the series.  Nobody is really supposed to die in Classic (Inafune apologizes for SAR), and there is no human villain in X (Elf Wars is not part of the X-series).  Further, failure to kill Weil was more due to the already tremendous loss of life (literally more than half the world) in the Elf Wars than it was Weil being human; Omega is a Reploid and he wasn't killed either.

I doubt even Zero would have killed Weil if the situation hadn't demanded it.  His concern is to stop Weil's threat; that doesn't mean he wouldn't have merely detained him if there was a way to do so.  There simply wasn't.  In the Z4 scenario, X likely would have done the exact same thing, though he may have been a bit more bent out of shape over it.

All that matters is how progressively hot and curvy Tron is, for me.

Oh and playing the game of course.
I love this guy. 8)

Surprising how much more "complete" it looks with the shader applied, though according to the blog that probably won't be the shader they actually use in the game, but it should be a similar style.

Hey, works for me.

So now they're taking Reaverbot submissions.  That'll be a tough one, but I'll give it my all.

1511
A bit of wishful thinking there, I think.  Especially since we already got the "be careful what you wish for" lesson in localization with X6's Maverick names.  Not that I minded, but much bitching and eyebrow-raising went on with the rest of the internets.

I really wonder what you're referring to here.
I was referring to Superdee and Algin's comments about multiplayer.

OoT does seem to be a step beneath what the 3DS is really capable of.  I guess they wanted to stay close to the classic look.

Still buying it, though.  The (slightly) enhanced visuals and stuff will hopefully be a worthwhile exchange for the political correctness plaguing all the other later versions, to say nothing of the Stone Of Agony being useless on VC.

Star Fox indeed looks gorgeous.  I'll have to nab that one.

Rabbids may be the first time I favor the portable version over the console.  I just kinda feel like I have enough minigame compilations.

Sega, Capcom and Ubisoft also have three things in common: character brands.

As much crap as the band gets, Sonic still is a top performer for Sega. Capcom has the Street Fighter folks and Mega Man, never mind Resident Evil, and Ubisoft has found nice niches with The Rabbids.

Not to bury each devs other titles, but brand recognition is a very powerful force. It's why people buy Coca-Cola more than Royal Crown.
There's no denying that, for sure.  And I don't think there's anything wrong with brand name recognition, either.  That's not ALL they've been doing, though.

Rabbids were a new IP when the Wii launched (albeit attached to Rayman, but the public perception even in the early days was that the Rabbids one-upped him), so I think Ubi deserves props for that.  Sega, though they did not develop it, did publish The Conduit.  And even though Sonic is an established brand, they put considerably more weight behind him on the Wii than they did during the previous generation, presentation-wise.  As for Cappy, they may have struck out with Zack and Wiki, but they also created a crossover fighter so orgasmically awesome that nobody cared about their dance partner being some near-unknown-in-this-hemisphere anime company.  Then there's Monster Hunter, which isn't quite as established here as it was in Japan.  Besides the original (2004), Tri is the only other home-console entry to make it to the U.S. and Europe.

If you want to talk someone who made it on the brand recognition alone, I'd point you towards The Force Unleashed.  The Wii version is generally respected as a decent, even if maybe not must-have, 3rd party title.  Once I finally got to play it, I found the gameplay to be...tolerable, and the visuals are positively HIDEOUS, even by GCN launch standards, much less today.  When a gamer is fed that as an example of a brand-name 3rd party title, I sure as hell wouldn't blame them for sticking with Mario.  Or Sonic.

It's sad to think that my main game of the 3DS launch may be a VC purchase, assuming Nintendo doesn't drag their feet getting that out.  SF4 looks interesting and all, but I'm really not that into core fighters.  And I can only get so excited about a new one when Trigger and Zero are calling to me from my Wii.

So, between Kid Icarus and two N64 ports, Nintendo couldn't get any of them ready for launch?  Shameful.  I hope the U.S. looks better.  I'm afraid that if I buy Nintendogs, my wife will be playing the 3DS more than me.

And with the 3DS, highest 3D setting too.
The "depth" of the 3D effect is merely changing angles, so I doubt that would affect battery (as opposed to light or volume which actually consume more power for a stronger effect).  Whether switching it off entirely would save battery life or not, I suppose that would depend on how the screen works.  I doubt the system would just switch off half its top-screen pixels, though; I'm guessing the parallax barrier just moves to its "off" position and either you're looking at an 800x240 2D screen, or one of the sets of 400 is blocked entirely.  Again, just guessing.

I definitly remember that with the few times I've used Wi-Fi.  Doesn't the 3DS download things even when it's off too?
Doesn't mean the option to switch off wireless communications (as the DSi does) won't be there, for people who want to opt-out of such features.  The Wii has that "always connected" thing going too, and you can shut it off in the menu.  You can even opt into the WiiConnect24 service while still leaving the "standby connection" (download stuff while system isn't running) off, if you want.

actually shows a bit of KH3D and Mario Kart
...did I see a sidescrolling Rabbid at 1:22?

Or they could be, you know, giving the 3rd parties time to enjoy some of that launch popularity so they won't complain and use "no fair we can't compete with Nintendo!" as an excuse when their titles do bad financially?
If that's true then I don't want to hear a damn word out of those people after this.

Sega, Capcom, Ubisoft, and the like need to have a word with these people.  Most of the devs who can't compete, suck at competing for a good reason.  Just because the Nintendo audience doesn't buy shovelware or gratuitous gore shouldn't mean that the devs have nothing else to sell.

It's an utter lie to say that 3rd parties can't succeed on Nintendo.  But they look at the hardware sales numbers, expect an easy-street gold rush, and [sonic slicer] when they find out they have to actually put some effort into it.

To my knowledge no game at activation contracts you to purchase DLC before being allowed to clear the game, so using X who is UNAVOIDABLE as an example is, yeah, pretty irrelevant. :P

I kinda agree with Flame in that I don't think they ought to be charging for unlock codes.  It's just an excuse to advertise the game as being cheaper than it truly is, and it discourages the cheapskates from taking full advantage of the game's features and the development that went into them.

MMPU pissed me off only because of the bitchfest that came up when Roll's costumes were hacked (otherwise, it's free, who cares?).  That was positively shameful; if they were that important they should not have been written to the disc.  Game programming flags have been hacked, and doing so ruled in court to be legal, ever since the freaking NES.  Banning from Capcom's servers due to ToS violation is one thing, but the whole damn fanbase trying to censor the internet is quite another.

A new year brings new localization.  We went from Aero, to Sephira, back to Aero again.  Because, you know, Aero being the Japanese name and four letters long makes it superior.  Obviously.  >.>

I'd like to know where the hell these people were when Capcom came up with the term Megamerge.  *shudder*

Even though it doesn't technically use Friend Codes (THANK YOU, CAPCOM), I figured it'd be a good idea to add Monster Hunter Tri names/IDs.

Feel free to add your player name even if you don't have your ID handy.  You can search by player name, the ID just helps keep it more accurate.  You also might want to note game version (since it is sadly region-locked), and possibly if you have Wii Speak or a keyboard handy.

Well, Gonzo, as fun as character creation is (and I LOVE IT, believe me), it really doesn't work with a franchise that throughout its entire life has highlighted its playable characters.  The alternative is to throw every familiar character into the "NPC" category, which IMHO would have been a lot worse.  This way, people can pick their favorite, without half the group fighting over who gets to be Zero.

X / Re: What took them so long to destroy the Virus?

ALL things respond to their environments, Zan.  Heat, pressure, light, magnetism, the presence of a container, and contact with other materials.  Fuel wouldn't be fuel if it didn't react with anything (no reaction = no release of energy).  It's quite a stretch of logic to try and define based on speculation what a fantasy alien object should and should not react to.  In no way is it unheard of in fantasy storylines to find a nonliving object which responds to one's thoughts (Ghostbusters II comes to mind).  The fact that it responds to such passively suggests that Alien Energy lacks a will of its own.

"Homing in on Rock" is based solely on a visual effect, hardly definitive.  He shot down an Evil Energy powered craft, and the energy spread to him while he stood near it.  A damaged and crashed craft introduces too many variables for us to account for.

Evil Energy, on its own, never demonstrated any sense of volition.  If on its own, Evil Energy were infectious, Rock should not be capable of safely handling it, which he does throughout the first half of the game.  It doesn't respond to being handled by those of justice (Rock, Light, and Duo), suggesting a lack of any survival instinct.  And, as is central to Power Fighters' plot, Alien Energy on its own has no affinity to justice or evil, but rather adopts the traits of whichever it is exposed to.

All of this is passive behavior, and therefore cannot be taken as definitive evidence of life or programming.

Fire performs that activity, Zan.  It consumes, and it spreads with regard to what it is able to consume.

I don't recall seeing Alien Energy actively "seek" anything.  I haven't seen anything regarding Alien Energy that may definitively be called consciousness or instinct, as opposed to mere environmental reactions.

Got Wi-Fi and Wii Speak, if anyone's interested in hooking up with my noobish self.  Character name is Bowen.

It's the same depletion rate. It's just harder to refill it because of no tricks. You only have combo attacking enemies and White Wisp capsules to refill you.
All the more reason why, if playing DS Sonic, I'd best stick with Rush Adventure.  >.>
