AGS-101 with original cart works just as well.

Had Nintendo thrown in the game's Super Gameboy border (which I can get on my DS using GoomBA Color), that might have been worth a few bucks.

Seeings how they still plan on releasing 3D movies in the future, I'd imagine there is a 3DS-specific format.  At least in the works.  But for now, for their 2D movies, yeah, they may just be sending a low-quality stream and leaving it at that.

Update.

The first 3DS download I actually paid for is......Tennis.  What can I say, the music is catchy.

Damn you, Capcom, I wanted the L3 Prototype to be my first! O:<

Can't argue with free crap.

I wonder if it will be online or not?  At the very least, I can hook up a second player between my DSi and 3DS, if I can coax my wife or brother into it.

Mercenaries takes one baby-step beyond just high scores in that it does have unlockable stuff.  Though, there are plenty of games, even those that allow clearing story progress, that neglect to allow you to wipe such extras.

The questionable part isn't the effect, it's the intent.  The problem with dismissing it as trivial (which, to the game itself, it is), is that it furthers the question of why Capcom thought it was worth creating an internal backup.  It's conceivable that Capcom put out Mercenaries as a "test" to see what would happen.

Even if for the sake of argument that amounts to nothing, that Mercs was one big accident, the potential is still nipped in the bud.

As I've said in my previous posts, I don't think "no harm, no foul" technically applies here.  Yes, Mercenaries is a high-score game that Gamestop is deciding to sell used anyway, but according to Capcom that wasn't their point in the first place.

Here's the thing, though.  As easy as it was for gamers to read this out of context, it'd be just as easy for other developers to.  Establishing a precedent of the maker enforcing upon you what is and isn't acceptable use after purchasing a product is rather dangerous, I believe.  Not something that I feel the industry should be accepting.  So while it seems everyone was upset over nothing, I still think it was for the best as a matter of principle.  Capcom noticed, and they know not to try it again.

And man, Necky, I missed your wake-up calls...

Growing ever-frustrated with Nintendo's refusal to translate Fire Emblem 12, I decided to track down the GBA games (Path of Radiance was my first).  Now starting The Sacred Stones.  Blazing Sword is in the mail.

Next up is Legends 2. I've waited years to get my hands on it and now that I have...*laughs evilly*

I'd gladly accept that marketing scheme if they had the frikkin' Prototype Version out already.  As it stands the first downloadable 3DS game that I pay for is probably going to be Tennis.

The vocal fans can often find themselves in the minority when it comes to cash.  Can be either fortunate or unfortunate depending on the situation.

I'd like to get all 14 Emeralds but the Super Emeralds are just so aggravating to obtain.
That, good sir, is why we have post-game stage select with respawning giant rings.  You don't have to do it all in one run.

Gah! A valid feature any other day, but in this ONE case I curse it's inclusion!
Eh, I was afraid of that...  I know Pokemon does the same thing.

Honestly I'm sure it'd be easier with an Action Replay or something if those even exist for the 3DS yet.
Firmware updates create a bit of an issue as there's a very real chance that unlicensed hardware will be rendered useless in the future.  Wii went through that, which is why soft-mods pretty much dominate the scene there.

Never thought I'd see the day when the U.S. had this much incentive to import PAL games.  Thank God for Gecko OS, is all I can say.

NOA confirmed that, despite "Rainfall," they're not making any plans to release this, Last Story, or Pandora's Tower.

I'm not even an RPG fan and I'm still pretty ticked, just because it's a kick in the teeth to Wii's experienced gamers.  We're basically being told that we have Zelda and Fortune Street until Wii-U, which has no flagship title even announced, much less hopeful for launch.

In OoT, got all Gold Skulltulas and all but one Heart Piece guideless.

The Heart Piece I missed?  The frikkin' Goron jar. O:<
It's been so long that I forget what "secrets" are important and what ones are just free rupees; I tossed one bomb in, saw rupees fly out, and moved along...

Anyways, my obsessively completionist nature demands that get that damn fourth bottle (Shadow's Chaos Emerald has nothing on this) before tackling Master Quest.

Capcom claims that's not the reason, but it's hard to imagine what else it could be.

The point's been brought up that one could, in theory, force the game to restart by killing power in the middle of a save.  But you really shouldn't have to "break" your game to restart it.

Perhaps I'm missing something here, but what's the issue?
I'll admit, I'm not familiar with Resident Evil Mercenaries.  But, the practical impact aside, this is hard to read as anything but a dick move.  Sometimes people like to start stuff over, even if it's a simple matter of wiping high scores, and they shouldn't have to purposefully corrupt their files to make that happen.  Assume for the sake of argument that there are no "points of no return" in the game, everything can be revisited, and all user-entry is forever able to be edited.  So what?  The same is true of Super Mario World, that doesn't mean nobody ever restarts it.  It could be as simple as one day wanting to "earn" everything over again.  As a matter of progression, structure, and satisfaction.  People do that.  And I know Mercenaries 3D does have skills and abilities to be unlocked, if nothing else.

The real question, though, is not "What was lost?"  It's, "What was gained?"  What is the purpose, either to the player or to Capcom, of a single permanent save, with no alternate slots and an inability to clear?

Capcom, in doing this, is asking for a leap of faith that their game will accommodate all possible desires of restarting without the need to actually do so.  That is an extremely lofty promise given that we're talking about what often amounts to personal preference.  I restart many supposedly replayable games, Punch-Out!! and a variety of Mario titles among them.  So, why, Capcom?  What's the tradeoff?  To us?  To you?  To the game balance?  If they cannot answer that, then they are asking for a risk, even if it amounts to only a minor annoyance, with nothing to be gained.  That is senseless, and it's no wonder they'll catch [parasitic bomb] for it.

I don't much care because I don't follow Resident Evil.  But it strikes me as a supplier trying to exercise undue control over how a consumer uses their product after they've purchased it.  Generally not something they have any business doing, so I can sympathize.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Game will keep you busy a LONG, LONG time.

Monster Hunter Tri
Another one that will dominate your life, this game is without a doubt Wii's best online experience.  I highly recommend picking up a keyboard with it (it supports Wii Speak, but few players have it).

Zelda, Twilight Princess
It's 20 damn bucks, no excuses.  Epona's at her peak, and Midna is the best "guide" character the series has seen.

Excite Truck
The textbook definition of "high adrenaline racing", you'll catch insane air across landscapes that morph in the middle of the race.  It has custom music through your SD card's MP3's, no hacking required.  Bots doesn't allow that, so I recommend this one over it.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade
Feudal-Japan-themed, side-scrolling, hack-and-slash.  Gorgeous 2D visuals and the music is orgasmic.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii
If the words "local multiplayer" mean anything at all to you, this game is absolutely vital.  Yes, even more so than Brawl.  And even if you're playing solo, it's still a solid oldschool experience.  It's also right up there with Brawl in terms of its hacking community, if that means anything to you.

Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom
As fighting games go, the controls are surprisingly approachable.  Zero, Trigger, and classic Roll in the same game, can't beat that.

Metroid Other M
Did you not mind Fusion being a tad more linear?  Are you not bothered by knowing what insecurities Samus regularly buries within (even if one in particular hits her off-guard)?  Then play this game.  It's some of Wii's best visuals, and for a remote-only game, controls amazingly well.

Ghostbusters
Solid use of the license and another great local co-op game.

Godzilla Unleashed
If you are any fan of kaiju then you will not be forgiven if you don't play this (and no, the PS2 game of the same name doesn't count).  Otherwise, you can safely pass.  Giant monsters aren't exactly a universal appeal, but for fans, this is the best since Monster Of Monsters back on the NES.

Sonic And The Black Knight
A sorely underrated game that you should be able to find for dirt-cheap.  It generally controls and progresses in abilities better than Secret Rings, amounting to a far more addictive title than its predecessor (although to its credit, Secret Rings has more varied and interesting boss fights).  Just don't make the mistake of assuming you have to stop for every enemy, because you don't, and you'll do fine.

X / Re: Why is wall dashing so hard in Maverick Hunter X?
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:41:13 PM »
Yes, but X6 had 4 possible armors.  MHX has one.

For cutscenes taking place out of the gameplay stages, it is conceivable that X may disengage his armor.  When you plainly see the armored polygon model in the background, no amount of "what if"s will cover you.

That's kinda my thought on both PSP games; if you want the blue bomber, you're better off playing the originals.  The PSP games are mainly awesome for their new characters, but lousy as remakes.

In the case of MHX, my main issue is their nerfing the buster upgrade.  If I want a game with a crapass arm capsule, I'll play X3.  And no, the Z-Buster is no redemption; its strength is the exact same as the spiral's cumulative power (it just does better on bosses due to being a single shot).  The Super NES shot was 1.5-2 times as powerful, depending on range, and it could tag enemies around/behind you.

Yoshikawa's unfortunate habit of refusing to draw armor for in-game mugshots doesn't help any.  Much as I love X6's gameplay, if its presentation is out-performing your own, there's a problem.

Pretty clear that Sony's abandoning UMDs on the grounds of battery life, so it's really a question of whether or not they're willing to set up a decent digital conversion, or just have you rebuy whatever is currently on the PSN store.

There is no blanket rule of pain tolerance between genders.  Women assume such because they give birth and don't have nads.  The types of pain that are actually common across the both of us, you'd be simply ignorant to say that one gender complains about more than the other.

I have a considerably higher pain tolerance than my wife, yet my mother is the toughest SOB I know.

Huh, and here I thought it was just me.

Doesn't seem nearly as difficult in the original X1, which also required timing rather than hold.  I just chalked it up to the PSP's buttons needing some getting used to (I dash with L, an old MMZ habit).

Water Temple is very easy to get lost if you're not paying attention, but it's by no means impossible.  I think it's a confidence issue more than anything else, what with constantly returning to the central "hub" with limited access at any given time.  Quite a few Zelda dungeons feature a fair amount of backtracking, but I guess it's just how many doors/floors are connected to that one room that freaks people out.

Oh yes, repeated suicide being a necessary step in a "perfect" run in X5...

Expanding the power-ups was a great idea, but the execution could not possibly have been more wrong.  One more reason I like X6 and Xtreme2.  X5 is perhaps the game that most badly needs to be save-hacked/have New Game Plus.  The availability of the items (and even the Gaea Armor) is simply shot to hell.  Whose bright idea it was to even tie Power-Up Parts to Life/Energy Ups is a good question on its own, but WHY IN GOD'S NAME would you tie Zero's parts to Weapon Energy?!

New Game Plus is truly underappreciated... -AC
