I'll look into that one.

Does it do files en masse or one at a time?

well I'm guessing that DSi doesn't like MP3. use itunes.

No it doesn't, and SUPER is made of fail! It crashed my computer, I was lucky I had a restore point right before I installed it, otherwise I would've been screwed!

I did a review of the DSi, but it wasn't nearly as detailed as yours.

I would agree with the volume, but I didn't have a problem with it.

The whole "Not being able to watch YouTube" thing still irks me. Nintendo should fix that.

I'm infamous on several other sites for "Wall of Text" posts, so that's why I put a lot of details into stuff :P

I got the black one, but I don't think either of them have the "shiny gloss" that the DS Lite had. It's really rough on the outside, which is another "why did they do that" thing :\

Gaming / DSi release and first impressions
« on: April 06, 2009, 05:04:18 AM »
Ok, I don't see a thread for this, so here I go.

I got the DSi today (fairly empty in the store, so I must've missed the craziness XD), and so far, it's pretty cool. It's a decent music player, but it requires MP4's to work. It can also record sounds and stuff (up to 10 seconds), so that's kind of cool to record something, and you can also screw around with the speed and the depth, so you can go deep and fast, deep and slow, high and fast, or high and slow. It's kinda fun. Impractical, but fun. You can also close the DSi while earphones are plugged in, and actually listen to the music, which is nice. The quality IS pretty bad, but then again, it's also being based off of the speakers in the first place, and I doubt you can force theater-quality surround sound into something the size of two DS games stacked on top of each other and the length of 1 and a 1/4 of a credit card.

The Web browsers pretty nice. The two main problems (which aren't THAT big of a deal) are: the lack to download things (I know there's a lack of memory on the DSi, but they could AT LEAST let you try to download things onto your SD Card), and the ability to run flash programs (the very least they could have let it work on YouTube, even the Wii lets you watch videos on YouTube). These two things would make the PSP/Wii combo that would be just awesome (The PSP can't handle Flash well, while the Wii can't download things). There may be an update to this, but that may happen later (they also need to start ditching the "Block" system for freakin' actual sizes like MB, GB, and such).

The camera feature is pretty nice, nothing to really comment on because the closest thing to it is a phone camera. It is cool that you can manipulate stuff that you have though, so it's kinda cool to have a mini-photo shop on the thing.

My two biggest grips though, are the power button and the volume button. It's nothing major, but it's still a "why?" thing. The power button is below the D-Pad, and placed far enough down that you won't actually hit the button if your thumb slips (or at least, not actually press down on it), but the problem with it is that when you DO hit it, a simple press sends you back to the main menu. Granted this is kinda cool since if you want to go to the main menu while playing a game or something, you can press it and go back. The problem is, it's a double edged-sword. If something DOES tap it, you exit the game completely. Luckily it's solved already thanks to it's placement, so even though it's a problem, it's still not a glaring one. As for the volume button, it's located on the left side, right above the D-pad. The problem with it is that you have to press the buttons to control the volume. Whatever happened with the wheel or the sliding thing? I thought those worked pretty well, you could adjust it just enough to get the particular volume you want. Granted the buttons come close to those volumes, it still would've been nice because if you need to mute the game in a flash, you could easily push the sliding thing all the way in a second, rather than rapidly tap the button, and it works the other way as well, when you WANT the volume up, you have to rapidly push the button rather than just slide the thing in the same amount of time it takes to hit a button. Again, these problems aren't anything major, but it still just makes me wonder WHY they made it like that?

All in all, it's pretty cool. It's kinda like taking the Wii and the DS and molding the two together, which is a pretty good start for the next generation of hand helds, and the idea's are going to be piling up. If you have a DS or a DS Lite, some cash to blow, and no reason to use the second slot that was lost, go ahead and get it. If you don't have the extra 100+ dollars or you have a good use for the GBA slot, then don't bother, because the difference really isn't that great. I switched mine out because the touch screen was screwed up, and I already had a giant stack of games to trade in anyway (the actual amount of cash I paid was about 3 bucks), so I figured, "why not?" There are some DS games I do want to play, and it may be interesting to see just how Nintendo handles the DSi in the future since it can be upgraded.

God, I would have loved for this to be true. *cries* I mean it's not like I was a big fan of some of the X games, but still. It would have been nice for a possible "fill in the plot holes" story.

damn you april 1st, damn you.

Granted the sprite artwork was really well done, this year was honestly pretty weak.

What would have been better? "Tatsunoko VS Capcom Coming to the US!!!" Seriously, who would've shat their pants if that was it? All you really had to do was take existing pictures that weren't scans, and just translate them, and then shop it on there. Granted it would take some time to do to make it look official, someone could've pulled off what BBD did last year with MM9 and take a picture of it from aways to blur the image so that it looked more convincing.

I can't see the big deal with the competitive metagame. There's too much time potential being put into it for something that will only wind up requiring you to repeat the process, all over some values in the RAM. If it must come to that, I'd rather just hack my team to perfection. But, since I couldn't care less, I'll stick with my balanced team of legendaries and pokemon I like.

Which is why the game is a lot more fun when you don't have to worry about that crap. You just pick your favorites and see how good you are.

I miss those days (damn you serebii and smogon, damn you for showing me what EV's are and all that crap! *angry fist shake*)

???

......that's about all the reaction I muster to that one.

The original concept was to catch cool looking monsters and fight your way to be a champion, and the most competitive it got was simply going up against a friend. Now it's gone to creating the right type of team and looking at their strengths and weakness', what moves they should have, get the right nature, get the right ability, hopefully get the right IV's, breed the right moves onto it, fight the same damn things over and over and over until you get X amount of EV's, and then just sit around for someone to actually challenge you, then find out that there was some giant flaw in your planning and that may result in your team being screwed up.

Even in the competitive areas the game's changing up. If you don't pay attention to what the latest set-up is for a particular Pokemon, then you won't know how to counter it, and then you're just stuck. It's seriously becoming more of a game of fads and trends. One particular set may be popular now, then it'll fall out because someone found a good counter to it, then that counter grows, then the chain starts up again, until finally the original set ends up being the counter to the latest fad. For instance, a lot of people (from what I've gathered on FC) stopped using Roserade once it was bumped down to the UU. What if it turns out there's a use for it with a particular team or item, and it's thanks to those particular set-ups, that it finally breaks out of the UU and goes back into the OU? What if some move ends up being looked over heavily enough and all of a sudden, a powerful team comes out from it? Look at Gravity; it's secondary effects open up the possibility of an extremely powerful sweeping team. Look at Trick Room; with the right set-up, Trick Room teams are hard to stop.

It's all of these rapid changes that I've just stopped playing. Hence, the game's changed too much for me to really enjoy it. I know the formula hasn't changed in god knows how many years, but what HAS changed and what DOES change is the competitive area of the game.

Emulation / Re: I really have no clue on what to call this...

Ah, thanks.

I've been wondering for awhile because one thing that was different was another company was put into the beginning credits and it threw me off a bit. I guess they just handled the PC port then.

Emulation / I really have no clue on what to call this...
« on: April 04, 2009, 06:12:04 PM »
...so I left the title like it is. The reason is, I have no clue where to stick this exactly. I don't know if it's being emulated or pirated, and if so, just HOW it's been done.

A year or two ago, a friend of mine showed me a Guilty Gear game (GGXX#Reload) on the school's computer. It played like the PS2 version down to the point where it was referring to the button controls EXACTLY like the PS2 game. However, the buttons had to be set up with a config program that was in the same folder as the game, and program the buttons that way.

Now, I don't know if a PC version of GGXX#Reload exists, and if so, how it works. Can someone inform me just a bit about this? Is this a 'super-special emulated version', or was the PC version formed around the PS2 one, and was just a bit cheap in that all they effectively did was put in a config option to set the buttons up?

Any suggestions? (please and thank you)

I imagine the flash memory in the Wii has at least a decent read/write number before it begins to go bad (or else I'm convinced Nintendo's crack team of tech monkeys are retarded as hell.) You shouldn't worry too much... just know the potential risk of using the feature a lot.

Wait, what? what's this about the memory now?

More like "All aboard the Cole Train baby!"

Gaming / Re: CONFIRMED (?) - Downloadable GB/GBA games coming to DSi
« on: March 27, 2009, 05:15:57 AM »
come again? there's never been a delay for those. Virtual Console was even available at launch.

You sure about that? I remember a small delay between the launch and the first VC game. I think it was about a week or so. Plus, there's also the fact that it took them forever to get the News and Weather channel up and running, even though they were sitting on the main menu since launch.

Nothing like forcing out sequels to turn a series to [parasitic bomb].

Not like you'd care about it.

So, apparently, It's Japan only... for now.

Eh, considering how long it took for NoA to get the freakin' VC and WiiWare things going, I'm not too surprised. They're cautious, which can be a good thing, but they're always a bit TOO cautious, so they end up being later than they normally would be.

And how. Years of hatred of NoA's treatment of the series washed away with one sentence. Imagine the net rejoicing that'd ensue. XD

I can top it still, "We also have top secret information about Mother 4" or "We've also confirmed that Mother 1, 2, and 3 will be put onto the DS in one single package and will be translated for countries outside of Japan, also, we're BSing and Earthbound and Earthbound Zero will be on the Virtual Console".

How many fangasms would occur if all the above were combined? O_o

Anime & Manga / Re: Kiddy Girl-and...wtf?
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:59:20 AM »
I've given it some thought, and I've come to realize that I've never actually explained my reason for hating the change that's been known so far. Just looking at it as a change in art style IS rather childish, but my anger (on a smaller scale than what's probably been given off) stems from the IMPACT of the art and studio change. Gonzo's style allowed the story to unfold the way it did without looking odd or out of place. Blood was spilled, political battles were fought, and the characters themselves along with the abilities being fairly original for the most part (yeah, a couple of common ones showed up, but for the most part, it wasn't just common super-powers; Eclair was like Indiana Jones and the Hulk being combined into a hot chick that made a whip come from lipstick streaks and if her lip color was altered in anyway she'd gain super-human strength (I said lip color change because once or twice she actually bit her lip and smeared the blood to activate her power)). A lot of the other characters were the same, they all seemed to be impossible to compare to a stock anime character type, or even just drawn as regular art.

With the studio change, that can be drastically different, and I don't recall too many times that a project was handed over to a different company turn out to be about on par with the expectations in the first place. Instead of having two characters who's weapons were magic stones and a comb, we now have a much more generic look that doesn't seem like it goes well with the story, which is more than likely going to be altered to a fairly great amount. Can you imagine the type of character that the studio has gone and created with blood on their hands, or they turn out to be some crazy [sonic slicer] who's managed to combine herself with an entire space station and plans to kill an entire planet? If the character that's been changed so far ends up becoming a cliche or stock character, who's depth is about as deep as a kiddy pool, just imagine as to what the rest of the cast will be like. They'll have to make them similar in apparel, but what about the new characters that they'll end up bringing in? What if they give the characters that were left behind an entirely different image? As far as reputation goes, the people don't have a lot to say. Heck, it's confusing enough as it is as to who the heck is actually MAKING the changes. Is it the director of Shuffle! just working together with the artists of it? Is it someone else who works for the same company?

Only one of two things have to happen before I change my mind and admit I was horribly wrong about this: 1) it's the actual planned sequel that Gonzo teased the fans with, only with different looking characters, or 2) this is someones idea of a REALLY horribly executed April Fool's joke that decided to do a month early (it took me about a week or two to actually bother putting this up from the original place that I got this from).

My brother went and got Platinum today, which was kinda cool. Now I have my own little protege that I can teach my vast amount of knowledge to and know that when he's kicking every non-hacker's ass at his school, I was the one responsible XD Plus it's kinda fun to teach him all the stuff and actually have something in common while not being completely and overly abused (though, Banjo & Kazooie: Nuts 'n Bolts would've been the game he got if it weren't for the fact the box said the multiplayer was online :\ ).

You know what would help seal the deal? If they come out and say "Yes, this is true" and "we've been secretly translating Mother 3 and we're releasing it on the DSi shop to download".

Like it matters anyway, I'm getting a DSi thanks to busted DSlite (but they'll never know XD)
