We'll give him a Magmar, which Giovanni steals, so him not having a Magmar at the time makes sense because Giovanni took it after Mewtwo defeated it.

It's entirely possible.  Mewtwo does vaguely mention his memories later on, though nothing specific.  The fourth and fifth episodes basically recount the start of the movie, with some slight variation and other scenes are extended, such as one of the battles against some nameless trainer's Magmar.  Magmar gets in a good hit, Mewtwo uses Recover and curb-stomps it, and then Giovanni steals it and orders Mewtwo to chase the trainer out of the gym using Swift.

I may give that nameless trainer Gary's voice, since I can approximate it pretty well.

Here, I'll type up an excerpt of Mewtwo's first few moments of life.  I haven't revised this from the initial adaptation, nor formatted it.

SFX: Glass cracks and shatters.  Liquid splashes (large volume), computer alarm klaxon.

FUJI: "Psychic powers, [BEAT] binding powers, [BEAT] telekinesis... [BEAT] There are many Pokemon that have these powers, [BEAT] but the psychic waves emitted by Mewtwo are so strong beyond range."

SFX: Glass crunch, computer alarm klaxon, lab ambiance, water drips.

MEWTWO: "What is this? [BEAT] What am I?!"

SFX: Psychic attack, alarm blares.

SCIENTIST: "This can't be! [BEAT] Mewtwo is rapidly developing!" (tweak?)

SFX: Alarm klaxon.

COMPUTER: "Danger. [BEAT] Initiating automatic security system. [BEAT] Targeting. [BEAT] Target locked."

SFX: Whir, ka-chunk.  Gun cocked.

MEWTWO: "Hm?"

COMPUTER: "Engaging."

FUJI: "No!"

SFX: Gun blast.  Bodily impact (gun shot), Mewtwo grunts and hits floor with a thud.  Flatline.

COMPUTER: "Mewtwo's life signs have stopped."

FUJI: "What have you done?!"

SCIENTIST: "Sir, wait! [BEAT] Wait, Mewtwo is..."

SFX: Flatline stops.  Some glittery sound.  Heart monitor beep, slow.

FUJI: "What?"

COMPUTER: "Mewtwo's life signs have returned. [BEAT] Mewtwo has regenerated itself."

FUJI: "Regeneration? [BEAT] Splendid!"

I still need to localize the move to Recover, but I'll get to that when I type it up.  The line will need tweaked so it doesn't sound so odd.

But, yes, Mewtwo had RETURNED FROM THE DEAD.

CRAZY AND EXPLOSIONS

We get explosions immediately after he breaks out of the tank, too.  No time for talking, Mewtwo is already full-on crazy.  The lab's security system has to take him down, which just pisses Mewtwo off and he destroys that, and then FINALLY Fuji calms him down just enough to talk to him.

Then, after that, it's right back to crazy.

“Someone is talking about me. [BEAT] What is he saying?”

SFX: Bubbles, lab ambiance fades out as hollow drone fades in. Energy “zeeeooom” coalesce sound, 40% right.

AMBER:
[Chamber reverb]
“Those are words. [BEAT] Human words.”

MEWTWO:
[Chamber reverb]
“Huh? [BEAT] Who are you? [BEAT] What are you?”

NOTE: Mewtwo and Amber's dialogue have the chamber reverb until otherwise noted.

AMBER:
“I'm right beside you. [BEAT] I'm a human, [BEAT] born just like you.”

MEWTWO:
“A human? [BEAT] Then, I must be human, too!”

AMBER:
“Well, you can talk, [BEAT] so, maybe you are human. [BEAT] Or I'm a Pokemon.”

MEWTWO:
“Human? [BEAT] Pokemon? [BEAT] What are those? [BEAT] Which one am I?”

AMBER:
“Maybe it matters to you if you're a Pokemon or a human, [BEAT] but not to me. [BEAT] All of us here were born in the same way.”

MEWTWO:
“All of us?”

AMBER:
“Can you hear them? [BEAT] Can you tell who they are?”

SQUIRTLETWO:
[Fade in, hollow]

Some dialogue from the third episode.  Fuji shows Mewtwo to Giovanni for the first time.

MEWTWO:
[Hollow reverb]
“Where am I? [BEAT] Who am I?  [BEAT] Why am I here?”

SFX: Fade in laboratory ambiance, contained and muffled to start.  Bubbles and scuba regulator breaths.  Fade out bubbles and scuba gear and fade to clear lab ambiance.  Two sets of footsteps (stagger steps) walk slowly from 80% left to 60% left.

FUJI:
“We've successfully created Mewtwo, [BEAT] from the analysis of Mew's genetic material.”

SFX: Fuji's footsteps stop.  Giovanni's footsteps continue to 40% right.  Three hollow taps on glass.

GIOVANNI:
“Is this really a clone of Mew?”

FUJI:
“The looks and figure may be slightly different--”

GIOVANNI:
[Interrupting]
“Slightly?!”

FUJI:
“We've done everything we can! [BEAT] Maybe this 'Mewtwo' is even stronger than Mew. [BEAT] Though, it hasn't yet gained consciousness.”
