I think there's a trope for that and I think it refers to the Idiot Ball.
Echidna eggs tend to be small and leathery, and are transferred to a pouch on the underside of the female. Once the echidna hatches, called a puggle, it then spends much of its time in that pouch where it nurses, until it's mature enough to leave.
On that note... there were depictions of other baby echidnas, but to my knowledge, Knuckles is the only one who was shown to come from an egg, as echidnas should be born. I may be mistaken, but I've seen comic depictions of newly-born baby echidnas and no eggshell in sight.
Unless sonicverse echindas lay/process their eggs like Kiwis, in which it still would've been a painful process anyway.

Very stylish, creative way to reuse an old can. And it won't bust if it falls off the counter... unlike my stormtrooper coffee mug that I keep change in.
