Off The Wall / Re: What's the best Graphics Tablet to get?
« on: April 27, 2013, 06:18:28 AM »
For the longest time, I was using a small Wacom Graphire 4 that I got off eBay for $60.  A few months ago, because I had the cash to do so, I bought a Wacom Intuos Touch.  I've also used a first-run Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet, small.  All of the tablets I've used had small active areas (4x5 and 5x6 that my Intuos has).  They all felt pretty much the same, too, though I like the surface texture of the Bamboo Fun and the Intuos Touch much more.  It's somewhat rough, like paper.

The only issue I've had with my Intuos Touch is the "touch" part.  When I'm using the pen, I need to disable the touch pad function, so that the cursor isn't fighting between the pen nib and the heel of my hand.  I've also had the driver crash a couple times.

As for using the tablet...  Do you have to look at the mouse when you're using it?  Do you go back and forth between the mouse and the screen while using it?  Using a tablet is the same as using a mouse.  Look at the cursor, not where you're positioned on the tablet itself.

Keep in mind:  The equipment does not make the artist.  Meaning, just because you use expensive, top-dollar materials, the quality of your work will not suddenly jump to match it.  Instead of worrying about buying this expensive thing or that expensive thing, I think you need to concentrate on learning to use what you already have.  Do you have the tablet drivers installed properly?  If so, then the active area should translate to the monitor resolution.  Meaning, if your pen crosses the border of the tablet's active area, then your cursor will be stuck on the edge of the screen.

I don't know why you have to keep looking at your tablet.  Use it like a mouse.  If you learn to use what you have properly, you wouldn't need to waste money on something else.  Just because it's bigger and more expensive doesn't mean your work will suddenly get better.  Like I've said, I used a Graphire 4 for eight years and the work I produced with that tablet still turned out better than some people do with their Cintiq.

It's not the product, it's the user.

Back in Saffron City...

Mewtwo finally opened his eyes and gave them a level gaze since they stopped petting him.  He snorted, rolled over, and curled up, resting his head on his folded hands and closing his eyes for a nap.  Quickie reached down and gave him a good scratch.  "Big bad Mewtwo just wants some love..."

"Hush," Mewtwo twitched his tail.

Quickie stood.  "Well... there's a decent nightlife around here, a club or two, some taverns...  Usually, I'm working on projects in the evening, while Mewtwo goes off and does whatever.  When PB gets back... if he can pry himself away from Karen, he could tell you about some of his haunts around here."  Quickie shrugged and sighed.  "Unfortunately, I don't really have that much of a social life.  And honestly, I'm fine with it."

Meanwhile, in Veridian City...

Giovanni sat there in his Spartan office, arms folded across his broad chest.  His security system had been reset, and a number of the part-time staff have been put on paid leave until new background checks could be completed.  His advisors and higher-ranked agents were reorganized and assigned to different duties in order to better secure his gym.  All business outside of his normal Gym Leader duties were routed through numerous agents, and depending on security level, were either transmitted to his underground office on a secured line, or sent to his home through a protected server.  Only his elite agents even had his home phone number, and it was one of his agents who urged him to return to the compound that evening, after the fiasco that caused Giovanni to reset his security system, rethink his protocol, and to retreat to the liquor cabinet at home.

The agent, a blonde-haired woman with top-secret clearance, tucked a strand of her curly hair behind an ear before she straightened, clicked her heels, and spoke in hushed tones.  "We are still awaiting results of the other tests, but we had run a sample of the litter through the mass-spectrometer, and determined its composition.  After that, we cross-referenced a database of litters available on the market and traced this particular sample back to a manufacturer and distributor in Saffron City."

"Saffron City?"  Giovanni was surprised and puzzled.  "Is that litter available in this town?"

"No, sir," the woman shook her head.  "It is a brand manufactured and sold only in Saffron City.  Hypoallergenic, low-dust, clay-free, paper-based formula, with carbon and baking soda odor control."

"And the litter my Persian uses?"

"Low-dust clay-based charcoal formula with baking soda odor control, Pretty Skitty brand."

"So, let me get this straight..."  Giovanni cupped his chin in his hand.  "I turn my back and used Persian litter from Saffron City appears on my desk."

"That much we are able to gather, sir."

"FIND OUT WHO OR WHAT PUT IT THERE!"  Giovanni slapped both palms on his desk as he stood.  "Here, I will narrow it down for you.  It appeared on my desk.  Out of thin air.  There are only certain types of creatures that can do that!"

The woman nodded quickly. "I'll inform you as soon as I'm able."  She turned and left the room quickly.

Giovanni sat down again and heaved a groan.  He leaned back in his chair and took a swallow of his coffee--which was cold and stale.  The half-and-half he had mixed in also left a skin on the surface.  He shook his head, and then jabbed the button on his intercom.  "Agents 006 and 004, have you made any progress on locating our intruder?"

"Not yet, sir," a voice crackled over the line. "We've been conducting perimeter checks every fifteen minutes.  A few trainers stopped by, but they were sent away."

"Have you checked with our away teams?  The intruder said something about Pallet Town.  Contact the away team there and find out what you can!"

"Right away, sir!"  The connection closed with a click.

Giovanni sat back in his chair and pulled his flask from his pocket.  He unscrewed the cap and knocked back a swig.

(So, Wily is involved with Project Mewtwo?  Perhaps I could use this little bit to my advantage...)

Perhaps I should start getting to bed while it's still dark out.  Now that it's warm, the neighbor ties their yappy little dog out back and it barks incessantly under my bedroom window.

The dog is too sweet and cute to blame, though.

Mewtwo finished summoning his storm and rolled over on his back, purring.

"Be careful...  You know how Persians get those catgasms and bite you when they get all excited?"  Quickie warned.  "Yeah, Mewtwo can inflict a nasty nip."

"The Jolteon is reserved for special occasions," Quickie said, looking out the window at the developing storm.  "Looking good.  If they cause blackouts, people will just blame it on the weather."

(I'll wait a bit before I decide to give Mewtwo more cat-like habits... such as rubbing his face against corners.)

Fett merely crossed his arms in front of him and gave Bossk a level gaze.  "If you want to go charging in, be my guest.  One less means a larger bounty to go around."

Zuckuss watched the banter between Fett and Bossk with nervous apprehension.  He had seen exchanges such as these before.  With other creatures, it often ended in death.  And he knew from experience that Fett was most likely to be the one who would cause that death.  Memories of the Circumtore job came flooding back.  "Perhaps... perhaps Fett does have a point.  They could be waiting for us."

"There are whole star systems whose gross domestic product is less than the cost of a single Imperial Destroyer. There are whole nations which, throughout their entire history, do not use as much energy as an Imperial expends to make a single hyperspace jump."

My TCW Aurra Sing figure has a ball-jointed neck and waist.  While I was working on my kit-bash, I pulled Aurra Sing apart so I could study the joint construction, and I sculpted a ball joint for D'harhan's tail that way.

Only, I wasn't using very good material for it.  The more pliable, the better.  D'harhan's five-jointed tail lost four joints due to breakage.

Quickie looked over.  "Hm... good point.  That would be pretty bad.  The cops don't necessarily like the rolling blackout battles."  She looked to Mewtwo.  "Mind giving them some cloud cover?"

Mewtwo didn't even open his eyes.  He raised his hand and worked on summoning a small storm, all the while still curled nose-to-tail on the floor.
