Magikarp aren't in the TOP PERCENTAGE.

Also Jericho, yes I am serious.

My brother is in here LOLing like nuts over this. Deal. XD

EDIT: Where's/What's your FC?

702
With a trade really. I don't know, I'm just the lackey mooching off his cart and doing negotiations with RPM. XD

EDIT: What Harruhy said.

Name your conditions and we'll try to match it. Also, I wouldn't mind battling anyone here, not just Hypershell.

703
OK, anyone here want to help my bro out with a Cyndaquil? Also Hypershell, mind doing a battle with me? It's not my Pokemon or even my movesets, but hey, I want to see how I'll fare. XD

Tangent:

Now you see, I've never been particularly competitive with Pokemon and as a result, this might be a horribly out of date concept I have in my head, but I didn't think Typhlosion was bad with its potential movepool.

I remember cleaning house with a Ty that rocked Rollout, Flamethrower, Earthquake, and Dynamicpunch (easily the weakest link, only for its God awful accuracy). I always wanted to try and be more creative with my 'mons movesets, but I didn't really have the avenue to until this gen.

Dragonite has and always will be great. I can't have a finished team without one. <3

On a side note (and more related to the current topic) what's wrong with Fire/Water/Grass starters?

Sorry man, but seriously PB already addressed why Nintendo can't do those "awesome and new" things very clearly. Their moves have to be scrutinized more by themselves since all they do is make games. Any profit they make, be it a cent or eleventy billion dollars has to be maximized to the fullest since they don't have any other ventures to get disposable income from. (Being a conservative company, Nintendo has to make sure that they have enough money made on their own to ensure their operations can thrive for beyond the known future and then some.)

As such, they have to stick to the surefire winners 9 times out of 10 to make sure that they make a profit and that said profit is enough for their stash and (this is critical) enough to please their shareholders in the stock market.

Also, this might be more opinion than anything, but if NSMBWii didn't bring anything new to the table in terms of 2D platform design, then I really need to know more about the type of platformers you've been playing. The pieces individually (multi-man co-op, level set pieces & designs) might be nothing new, but the implementation made NSMBWii one of my favorite games of last year and a thorough blast to play.

Interesting notes on 3DS came up today. The most interesting being that the 3D screens can toggle the 3D effect for those who might not be able to view 3D images for a long time and the DRM/piracy measures on the system are going to supposedly be Nintendo's fiercest yet.

Nintendo 3DS to have tighter DRM, switch-off 3D screens

Nintendo 3DS games will be harder to copy

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said in an interview today that the 3DS will have tougher anti-copying measures than the existing DSi. The executive wouldn't say what it would involve, saying it would give "hints" to pirates, but told Forbes it was important to step up copy protection measures. Nintendo is concerned about a culture of free where "software is meaningless," Iwata said.

He added that the 3DS will still be usable by those who don't like or can't use 3D. The signature displays, likely made by Sharp, won't have to generate their effect at all times and can be switched back to 2D. His statements suggest that many if not all 3DS games will have a fallback to conventional graphics.

The 3DS may have the latest NVIDIA Tegra graphics, higher-resolution displays and even extras like analog sticks or vibration feedback.

THIS is why my Wii is still near empty after about two years. And I think some of this could apply to the DSi. Like how there is no DSi version of the Virtual Console.

And again, I point you to the two responses I've given to Flash. The answers are there. You also need to be a bit more broad with your tastes if you want to find great experiences on Wii. The big stuff is still coming and shows no signs of stopping up yet though, so if you're strictly looking for "the next big thing" I think you'll be pretty surprised soon.

"What is triple A (AAA)? Nothing but a miserable pile of labeling.. But enough talk, have at you!"

Just thought I'd point something out that I've noticed over the course of foruming, I wouldn't put all my eggs in a particular basket due to the amount of money pumped into it and its marketing (both of which seem to be characteristic of that AAA label I see used a lot). Doing so limits your view of what is a good game by making you think only blockbuster styled things are worth the time as well as makes you neglect smaller titles that might be of the same value or greater in terms of lasting game play and inventiveness.

(Funnily enough, during the time I was writing the last half of that sentence, Little King's Story was on my mind. XD)

As for the wanting bigger and newer experiences, well I'll admit that I feel the same way too. Hell, even Iwata feels the same as he has gone on record and mentioned that as a part of the shortcomings Nintendo had this gen, pioneering newer franchises and IPs was one of the big one. Thing is, as I mentioned before, those things take time and resources, both of which Nintendo is stretched thin of (fun fact: Nintendo only has about 3000 - 3500 workers worldwide. This encompasses everyone from their big name developers, to the guys in retail at Nintendo World). On top of that, this is all a very experimental phase where Nintendo has to produce things that resonate with an infinitely broader audience. If they make "Mega Epic: The Game" and can't make back their investment in making such a game because some elements turned off their fan base or the marketing for it didn't hit the right audience and as a result the game doesn't do as well as forecasted, it'll eat away at how they can move about and operate when doing things like that.

In the end, this part ties a lot more into business. They not only have to have an amazing concept, focus test the hell out of the game play to make it comfortable for their entire audience (not just the guys growing up who blew apart the older games and got used to them), and create a fitting scenario for said game play, they also have to have the right marketing, advertising, and timing for such a game to succeed according to the way they want it to.

Finally, I don't know about you but I have fun playing tried and true, tried and true with [tornado fang] awesome new spins and twists, and fresh out the oven brand new and awesome games all the same. I'd be more than saddened if I had to deal with Nintendo franchises changing for the sake of change rather than for game play that is fitting and relevant to the series' foundations.

I love Nintendo. Nintendo makes me happ-

...

God damn it...

I saw that earlier and was wondering what the hell it could be all about. It doesn't help that most people will jump in and use how terrible an experience they've had with WFC this gen as evidence that Nintendo will be the same way with their online capabilities next gen. Then you introduce this story and all hell breaks loose. XD

Personally though, I'm more partial to that second idea he had where everyone has free online, but you can pay optionally and get more exclusive content. It makes more sense from a business perspective if Nintendo still wants to go the route of "everything for everyone" and it gives the dedicated something extra to value.

Trying something out here. I split off the posts about the Nintendo issues from the Kirby thread which you can view here. Anything regarding our favorite pink puffball goes there. This new topic however is going to be an interesting gamble. We'll be discussing the Nintendo direction and seeing where the disconnect between gamers is. I'll also be trying to flex my weight and show off different view points for you all to consider.

Now a topic as scarily divisive as this is going to need some guidelines. As such here they are:

1.) Don't post if you don't have a clear point you can and/or will back up if asked for an opinion.
2.) Questions are accepted. Accusations and member trolling are laughed at and punished.
3.) No system trolling. No system trolling. No system trolling.
4.) Be civil. It's a discussion about video games, not metaphysics, politics, terrorism, or the existence of Baby Robo Raptor Jesus. XD
5.) I don't mind a joke or two, but if this thread goes nuts, it's getting shitcanned and you all lose some respect from me.

Edit - Vixy, show me how to take over opening posts sometime please? XD

Gaming / Re: The Double Edged Nintendo Fallacy

Wait, did this topic really become list wars?

I'm lambasting Nintendo because they've failed to see to the needs of the fans that have supported them for quite awhile, and are instead focusing on Mii-related games, such as Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and now Wii Party. Nothing wrong with making money. My only problem is that Nintendo has some of the most hardcore fans of the entire gaming industry. (not me BTW) That have stood by it through thick and thin. And the way they're repaying them, seems very unsuitable, by switching to another audience completely. I'm sayiung they're failing to see to the needs of the fans. I love Nintendo games when they're well made. I bought a Wii specifically for this. But it saddens me when it's just a dust-catcher lately. Aside from Sin & Punishment 2, I haven't played anything on it for awhile. I am not system-bashing. I just think that the potencial of the system hasn't been used at all. I bought the Wii Motion Plus, and so far, I've used it for TWO games. Ad I've had it for nearly a year, with no upcoming games on the horizon that require it. This isn't good.

And yeah, franchises need evolving. The DS is pretty well-stocked with Kirby Superstar, so why not gamble on a 3D platforming Kirby? See what comes out of there? It would be interesting to take the platforming Kirby games to new places.

OK, I'll put my two cents in.

Consider this, with every new entry into the console generations since the days of the NES, while Nintendo's quality and quantity of output has remained at a semi-constant, their audience (the dedicated fanbase you've mentioned) has been steadily dwindling. In the last generation, not only did they have the smallest sell through of console units (thus a more limited market to sell to), they now had to deal with a marring of their image thanks to gamer's perception of them (remember the Nintendo is kiddy lines?) and "the purple lunchkit". Nintendo saw this and through quite a bit of a thought process, they sought to move forward in a different way. Rather than go toe to toe with corporate juggernauts who had more than enough money from other venues to go the bigger better and more badass route, or deal specifically with the fickle needs of a easily flip-flopping bunch of gamers, they took a chance on a new market with the mindset of converting them into newer generation N fans and gaming fans in general.

Now I can talk business strategy and why this is such an amazing accomplishment all day, but as you said, it's all really about money in the end. Now strictly talking as gamers, Nintendo hasn't once done anything that shows an abandoning of the gamers who have been with them from the start. The Marios still get made (looks over at his shelf and sees New Super Mario Bros. Wii & Super Mario Galaxy near his Galaxy 2 preorder slip) and are out-Marioing most Mario games released in the past as well as most other games in the process (IMO), Zelda didn't become a secret to everybody with 4 games being released within the franchise alone this gen, 3 if you want to be extra specific. (Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks. Outlier - Crossbow Training.) Then there's also EAD who have basically gone on record to say that if they can't do something amazing with the next Wii Zelda, then they've complete failed. Hell, Metroid the dark horse of Nintendo got a direct series sequel in Prime 3, a compilation box set nearing Super Mario Allstars levels of good, and a new adventure with a different and more dynamic play style. Then we have tons of different smaller scale games, revivals of old franchises (Punch Out AND Sin & Punishment 2? In one gen? What act of God got us that? XD), and numerous (yes that's right) 3rd party games that don't get the glamour and glitz debuts of big shots on the other consoles, but offer their own brand of quality and surprise entertainment.

Now, while I did put out some bits to try and get you to see things differently, I will agree with you on two things, namely the underutlilization of Motion Plus and how Nintendo has not been giving their IPs an equal time to shine. The former issue has more to do with the fact that at this point, Nintendo seems to have had too many resources being used in different ventures to make content requiring M+ for the past few months/years. They have however gone on to mention that their biggest future project involving M+ would be Zelda Wii. On top of this, they have also had a hand in Red Steel 2 as they willingly sent over a good group of folks from Retro Studios to oversee the development. There is also the upcoming Flingsmash. Sure you look at this and think 3 games, big whoop, but remember this, these things take time, and when it seems like Nintendo themselves have to dip their toes into the water before any worthwhile movements start, it's going to take a while when they are stretched thin enough as is.

The latter issue is also a byproduct of the limited wiggle room Nintendo has thanks to all it's resources being used at full without breather time. Since all of these groups are focused on creating entries into the IP of choice they have to get out at a certain time, they are also forced to put others on the backburner. It's all about priorities in that regard.

I'd love to continue this train of thought, but I feel that as it stands I'm wildly off topic in a thread devoted to Kirby. XD

Sparky tells me that [parasitic bomb] almost everyday for the past month or so...

I'm saying it after re-evaluating a tease at the end of most recent Nintendo Power for "a first look" at a new game featuring a "recognizable hero". All of this was set to a starry backdrop and a large pink nebula blob was in view.

I didn't do well first time here, few years ago. I did about one or two topics, and everyone started flaming just because I said I liked FPS games.

Nothing against FPS gamers, just that tone with which you're lambasting Nintendo for poor output and "yet another minigame compliation". System trolling isn't cool.

EDIT - And now a quip about changing a franchise too?

That all said, let's start over. I hate seeing folks get worked up over something so silly.

How about FIRE/DRAGON.  I can't recall if we've had a FIRE/DRAGON type yet, which would kinda make sense!

I would agree with this if it weren't horribly broken for a starter. Basically, unless they introduce dragon types/moves into the game veeery early, you're looking at a Pokemon that is normal or highly resistant to everything not Dragon type. XD

And I'm with Harruhy. Seriously, I don't mind the mixtures or types, they just have to look kickass. Gen IV was surprisingly good with both though.

I believe you Sato, and funniest part is Huey is 100% like me in that regard. I also loved the last minute or so of that episode soooo much.

There was one moment in the episode that got me and pretty much everyone watching it -- the line about the black leader/white man. My entire family watching the moment at the same time in different rooms let out one hell of an "OH [parasitic bomb]" when that one came out.
