Images here only really cared about width, due to scripts.
That said, I've been trying to figure out how to have a super-huge avatar within width for so long now, and he manages to do it by accident
I think the tip for this is having large images scaled down by the script. Which figures, since I have always cropped and resized avatars to the required dimensions.

@RMZX: As far as I know, there's no way to correct FMVs in Dosbox without scalers.
But, I just pulled my disc out and installed it, and the game plays pretty well.
Also, check the settings in your dosbox.conf as there are a few things that can make it run better:
[sdl] -> fullresolution, output
[render] -> scaler
If you set fullresolution to your native res, it will actually letterbox it for you if needed. Use in conjunction with your preferred scaler, for when you go fullscreen.
My output is set to opengl; you could change it to ddraw maybe, but opengl works for me. Just... something other than surface.
