Yeah the mic volume is way too high -o- Basically, when recording, the computer can only detect sounds up until a certain volume (0dB), until it can't process any more. Most people aim to sound around -6dB for a good recording.
If the volume of the recording is over 0dB, the computer freaks out and it can't record the rest of the sound wave, so the top and bottom of the sound wave get cut off completely flat. This makes the recorded sound distorted and unnatural.
It's also the same 'distortion' on distorted guitars but that's done on purpose with filters.
Basically, if you see the sound waves hitting the top and/or bottom, you need to turn it down =\

Distorted audio is unsalvagable, whilst soft audio can always be made louder. Background noise in the sound is also pretty impossible to take out -o- That's why singers use unidirectional condenser mics and record in studios.

Oh yeah, gain is just another word for volume. Sorta.

oh well, my lappie is old so there will always be fan sound on the background (plus some siren sound too) 

and mic gain down? I've already halved the mic volume, it's still not enough apparently, or is that whole different thing? I'm so new at this.
