As a person with a mother whose first language is Spanish, I feel ashamed that I can't speak the language myself.

I know how you feel too, me and my brother are the same way along with both of my cousins with both a Cuban dad and a Guatemalan mom.  Granted one of those cousins is the one who is deaf and can barely speak English in the first place because of it but the other speaks really bad Spanish.

I took Spanish in HS and Italian in college. Both are very very similar.

Yeah they really are, I really noticed it when I saw an Italian opera in San Luis Obispo on a choir trip.

One time, at Papa John's, we hired a Spanish speaking woman to talk to Spanish speaking customers. And a couple came in and were speaking Italian to each other. And she proceeded to try to talk to them in Spanish.

Well Italian is kind of similar to Spanish, quite a few words are pretty much the same in Spanish and Italian.  A friend of mine who took French said that Italian also looked similar to French to him but I wouldn't know since I can't really make heads or tails of French anyway. 

But yeah that doesn't suprise me since Italian and Spanish is sort of similar in a way.

Maybe, but I really can't think of a better general term to refer to people I don't know the exact nationality of.  And I certainly wouldn't do what my dad does and refer to every Spanish speaking person as Mexicans.

"Well if you want you can check out the location of the dinner tomorrow morning for any wheel chair accessible escape routes just in case." Bat-Sakura suggested.
