It's because there are 2 types of Wi-Fi and DS games for some reason don't work on one of them. Wii games don't have that problem however.

Oh god I remember these. Except for Shizuku in the fandub all the voice actors are terrible, and it doesn't help that script in this scene doesn't seem that good at all either. I know about the rest of the game but judging by that scene the script must be terrible.
