Aw, but changes like those are part of what makes the overall Megaman mythos so interesting! ;_;

Or, that one guy happened to just have watched "the Nightmare Before Christmas".

They dont make it interesting. It makes it annoying and confusing. For example, I didnt know X5 was THAT badly translate where they changed thing around. (Comrade thing aside, but I simply thought that was a mistake due to vague Japanese writing) I want to know the story, not the localization team's own fanwank that they insert into the story.
The least you folks could do is fix up the TV Tropes articles for the Mega Man series. I mean, after all, only a few of the RMs's personalities have been mentioned there, and someone erroneously used Quint's data card info from the US RM&F, for instance.
or, we could instead, put the correct facts in the ever growing MMN wiki.
Hell, maybe even our own.

Okay, can I just ask, what exactly is so badly localized about the US MegaMan games?

Megaman and crew being robot like "Humanoids"/Cyborgs,

Megaman's early box art,

Wily being Light's assistant just prior to Megaman 1,

Megaman knowing about Protoman being his brother

Almost all of Megaman 7, Including the added "Die wily"

Zero's unification "prophesy" and blueprints,

I think Zan Hyper and or Marshy can illustrate more of the localization blunders better than I can.

But see, this is exactly what Im talking about. *points at PB*

Rather than bothering to preserve a continuity made from bad localization, we have to get the real facts to the fans. Because if we start with there being different continuities, it makes the story much more complicated than it has to be.

Theres very little to talk or speculate about given how little facts we've gotten.

If it was for ease of reference, then it is far easier to consider them all localization inconsistencies. Errors. BAD localization. Is it so hard to reference anyway? everyone knows how bady localized early Megaman was. The bigger issue is getting the correct facts to people, since that is much more difficult.

NAdM (thats the Brazilian comic right?) is it's own canon, much like Ariga and Iwamoto are. NAdM is just another canon.

Besides, doesn't PU have a Classic mode where there's no Time and Oil Man?

Key word is also Re-make. AKA they are making Megaman X1 and Megaman 1 over again, for the modern era. Anything that was not there before is only NEW information, meant to expand the existing story. EG: Day of Sigma and Boss Dialogue.

PU itself though, aside from the retroactive inclusion of Time and Oil man, does not change anything, instead, both the JP and US versions stick to the JP story. Which means, that since this is the new Megaman 1, Megaman 1 now has the correct backstory. With 2 more bosses thrown in by Inafune. And it only adds information that expands on Protoman. Nothing contradictory.

I dont understand why people want to PRESERVE a US continuity, when it is full of horible changes that even Capcom has been trying to forget, erase, and fix. (like, yknow, PU  being translated with the correct story.) Otherwise, PU would have been translated with the original story simply for the sake of "US continuity".

thats the thing, According to you, No matter what branch, Capcom is capcom, and US capcom has just as much of a say in the story and continuity as CoJ does. Well, if THEY are not preserving a US continuity, then by your logic, that should be the end of that, there is no US continuity because CoA doesnt want a "US continuity". So basically you are going against what you yourself said on CoA's power over Megaman. So even though they have the right to change and make a new continuity, if they dont want to preserve that continuity, then too bad, it is still the US continuity?

so its just pure fanwank then. CoJ doesnt care for a US continuity with the localization blunders, and CoA doesnt either. Only you, the fans are for some reason, intent on having two continuities.

You can document all the continuities you want, but if capcom is NOT preserving separate continuities, then there ARE NONE. Only one whole, like Zan said- with inconsistencies in the US translation. (and the German X1 booklet)

The Sonia Belmont deal is hardly relevant to this. her WHOLE GAME was considered not part of IGA's storyline. The game itself still stands alone however, as a Gaiden, a what if- its OWn storyline, where Alucard was Trevor's father.

Much how like Lords of Shadow is not part of IGA's storyline either, even though it takes place even before Lament of innocence. Its a standalone story.

Nobody jumped on you. You made a comment, we followed up on it. If 3 people jumped on the bandwagon against your point, thats not jumping on you. It means those 3 people did not agree with you. Its Neko-Err- Most Excellent Superbat's job to jump on people.

The fact is though, if you insist on continuities, then that means in the German Continuity, Zero is a female robot in X1 and somehow then became male later. Since the localizers made it such, its "canon". You cannot say that it does not count because they didnt preserve it in future games, because your "US Continuity"'s changes never "stuck". they changed for every game, and had no relevance to the last. its not like the "unification prophesy" ever amounted to anything, and Zero's "blueprints" from X2 were never heard of again. Hell, the wily assistant thing was never touched upon, and even the box art is inconsistent. the US changes are not consistent across the series, which is why it cannot be considered a seperate continuity. if it was, it would respect itself and it's changes.

Capcom US and Japan have made NO effort to preserve alternate continuities.

Your right, they were done, and that wont go away, but that does not mean that Capcom cannot try and "forget" them and bring the story back on track for the US audience. Which is what sourcebooks like Complete works can do, if even slightly. And PU. I think

because its just a crappy translation which Capcom has tried to rectify in recent outings and remakes. Not to mention making translations exactly that, accurate translations, ever since the PSX games. They have made absolutely NO effort to preserve a separate continuity. In fact, they have shown to be trying to do the opposite, bringing the US games on the same track as their original counterparts.

Otherwise, Complete works would have a section on its alternate continuities.

if CoJ doesnt aknowledge a US continuity, and CoA doesnt exactly embrace it either, then there isnt one.

the thing is more that no matter what changes the US localization makes, it will NEVER actually change the way the story goes.

I think the time travel example is best here.

very insightful. Also, theres another reason for why that IS the Varia suit. the very same design is in the scene where Samus takes out Mother brain in Super Metroid. And in that scene in the original, she HAD the varia suit.

It is not a continuity because it was not a specifically planned derivative version. there isnt even any sensical REASON. It was CoA's localizers deciding to take creative liberty with the game's story, and as they are the localizers, they have the rights to do what they want as long as its in english. CoA probably didnt even bother to check the original to see if it was consistent. after all, thats what the localization team is for! And if nobody is complaining, then all is well.

or, they just dont give a rats ass if the localization is accurate to the original as long as its in english.


 Lets use an example:

I work for a publisher, and it is my job to translate a book into another language for another country. But instead of simply translating like I should, I go and alter large portions of the work to suit my own tastes and what I think would "work better" or "sell better". I have the authority to do it, because IM the one in charge of localizing it, but Its not a derivative work, because I simply modified the original, and because my job was to translate, not re-write. I said I would translate it. Not change it. Therefore, it is a bad translation. maybe not mis-translation, because it was intentional on my part, but a bad translation, because in addition to translating, I changed the original work. If the publisher doesnt give a crap, that doesnt automatically make it an alternate version. It just means they didnt care and didnt check to see the original material, as long as I translated it for the public. The public doesnt know any better, and they dont have access to the original work, and even then cant read it, so they take what they get, and they like it. So nothing happens. I get to badly translate another day.

The way I see it, is that some folks just cant accept that what they've thought to be true is actually the US localization team [tornado fang]ing up. SO they insist that its the "U.S. Continuity" so that they can justify it. Even then, they still listen to the japanese one, and aknowledge that Wily was never Lights assistant and theres no prophesy about Zero's unification. So why do they try so hard to stick to the notion of a "US continuity", when they themselves subscribe to the japanese one? I dont get it.
