No, no hassle at all. You will get right into the action very quickly. ^^b
You do get hints on where you're supposed to go next, how to upgrade your Special Attacks (with AP) and things like that.
Oh and I recommend that you talk to every NPC that has a ! over their heads. They give you Quests, so accept them and the quests will be in your logs to keep track of what you do in the game. And you don't even have to return to the NPC to finish the quest. Just do the thing it tells you and you will earn the money for completing them, no matter where in the game you are. C:

Um well, as you saw at the very end of the video, it does have Fast Travel from the Map in your menu.
You access the menu with the - button and then select the Map icon (Save/Load is on the right side of the menu).
This is more or less how the game is, I'm afraid, but it's still a beautiful game. ^^

I don't know anything about the criticism or opinions the game gets from people...
I like the game, I don't see anything wrong with it (yet). ^^;
You are the one that decides if you want to do the "Walking Game: The Walkening", or fight enemies.
If you don't press Z to target enemies, you can run around in the open field and be amazed at the beauty of the game.
There's also a arrow icon at the very top of the screen that shows you where to go next.
A number will go lower and lower the closer you get to your next destination. ^^;
When you fight, you can pick between the spells and attack moves you have with the D-pad and use with the A button.
They will recharge for a bit after you use them, so in the meantime, you can do regular attacks with A button. Jump with B button. xD

Yes, you can walk freely around the different colonies in the game, until you press Z button to "target" nearby enemies.
Then you press A close to it to start fighting. ^^
