Versus won't show up. They have no interest in the US market. Bandai doesn't see a large profit from the US PSP fanbase. Which is why they're not bringing RM2 either.

The only thing that might prove the opposite, is because...there is the thing that a US copyright for Vs. (and I believe Graces, too?) has already been filed.

Couple that with the notion that this game, whether one wants to admit it or not, is one that's meant to directly contend with a certain other "crossover fighter" starring another RPG franchise, and there's at least SOME hope for a US release release. After all, if Dissidia hits it off well with US PSP owners, that may only serve more of a reason for Bamco to want to try and get in on the act, too.

No guarantees, of course, but we can only wait and see. But any "serious" Tales fan would be ready to import any way. You miss out on too much good stuff like Tales of Destiny Remake: Director's Cut and Tales of Heart, if you do!  8D

Differences in generations my friend. It's also the reason why games with shorter lengths, little to no emphasis on story or multiplayer, yet stellar gameplay (Mirror's Edge, MadWorld) are frowned upon. :(

I dunno though.

More and more, shorter games are starting to become much more acceptable again. Itoi wanted Mother 3 to be a reasonably shorter game. Vanillaware's new baby, Muramasa (CAN'T WAIT FOR IT TO GET HERE!), stands to be a shorter game than its predecessor. And so forth, and so on.

Developers realize that as gamers are growing up, they may not have the time to plop themselves into another 40+ epic. This is especially becoming more of a standard for Japanese audiences, where the overall gamer-base has decreased as the old guard has grown up, and the economy has made it so not as many children are being born to replace 'em.

A greater part of me is hoping that this type of climate would be conducive for beat 'em ups like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage, as well as other Arcade-styled genres to make their come-backs, much like Fighters have done so in the last year and some change. But we will have to wait and see...

I'll get VERSUS~ ^.^

Same. With 35 characters, they had OUGHTA make it so every game should have like 2-3 reps each. Obviously, for the sake of characters like Leon/Judas, they can just get costume changes.

I'm also looking forward to Graces, the more I hear about it.

Quote from: NeoGAF
http://tog.namco-ch.net
Releasing: This Winter
Genre: "Understand the Power to Protect RPG"
-Main character is Asbel Lhant. 18 Years old, from the Lhant territory of the Windol Country.
-Uses the Style Shift Linear Motion Battle System, which lets characters have more than one fighting style. You can set skills to the A and B button on the Wii remote.
-Sidestepping allows movement in a 360 degree angle around the enemy and other maneuvers.
-Compatible with the Classic Controller Pro.
-Animation scenes done by Production I.G. like always

Style changes? They really ARE trying to make sure they cover EVERY single fighting game system convention out there, aren't they? 8D

At this point, I'm almost "worried" that the Tales series will stand to exhaust all of them, before the FG devs can design more new ones.  :V

But then we'd get a Metroid Prime 6 in which the Space Pirates quote Shakespeare!   8)

For some reason, I could always imagine some one like Ridley donning a monacle, and quoting Shakespeare. Don't ask me why...  8D

Oh Ben.  Where's your blind optimism towards a game that you and I both know is going to be a TKO (Total Knockout Orgasm)?

I'm only reserved, because of the notion that, more and more, I can't let my "feelings betray me". That's what Palpatine...errr....companies like Sega, Capcom and Nintendo all prey on!

Quote
I know, right!

Finally, we'd get The Legend of Zelda: Quantum Eclipse, in which Link is summoned into the future by Cyber Zelda, Galactic Empress of the Moon Kingdom, to defend Lunar Hyrule by duel wielding the combined might of the Master Sword & the Quantum Saber and command the forces of Time & Space to stop the evil power of Anti-Matter Ganon.

Needs a Super Sentai(Power Rangers) like team of Space Sheikahs and Gerudo, for great justice.  :)

With the way Punch-Out Wii is looking, I don't really see that as a bad thing!   8)

While I'm liking PO Wii, too, I'm willing to wait until the product is in our hands, before being willing to give the team free license for other games.

But if they deliver, then hell, StarTropics, StarFox.......Murasame-jo? Any of them could be next in line for Next Level games...  ;)

Quote
Also, they need to make Metroid Prime 4: The Voyage Home, in which Samus has to travel back in time to save an extinct species of Humpback Metroids in order to satisfy the sick desires of an alien probe!  Abyss Ridley waits in the deep for YOU!  [eyebrow]

XD

R&D/EAD NEEDS some one like you on their team. We'd have so much more sexcellent games that way...

They need to focus more on StarTropic 3 anyway!   8D

Well, hey, that'd be on point....too bad the team that actually made such games doesn't technically "exist" any more.  -u-'

R&D3/IRD was the team that technically was responsible for both Punch Out and StarTropics. But now, they're primarily focused on the hardware aspect and design.

More than likely...if a ST3 is EVER going to be made, it'll be probably be from some outsider who hopefully will be up to the task, like with Punch-Out Wii.

Never mind Unleashed came and pretty much slapped everyone silly.

...In what way?

Granted, it was probably the first decent console Sonic in years, but how much was that to say, when we had everything ranging from Sonic Heroes, Shadow and 06 before hand, as "precedents"?

It, like Black Knight, still had the problem that they weren't THAT good of games. They were just "better", compared to what we had to deal with before-hand.

Quote
As for EAD, I think it's a bit worse that EAD won't even bother with the franchise than make a terrible game.

Well, keep in mind, the different EAD teams are all busy with their own functions, ranging from Aonuma's team keeping Zelda on lock, to Kimura focusing on DS development. Probably the only one who could stand to make a game of Star Fox 64-calibur (or better), is EAD Tokyo. And , realistically speaking, Tokyo is probably busy making a follow-up to Mario Galaxy, or something else, to probably be bothered with StarFox at the moment.

If I was wrong, and they were actually doing something SF related, and were ready to at least start the hype train by E3 this year, I'd be pleasantly surprised. But at the same time, I'm not expecting as such. Or at least, not for a good, long while.

Quote
Another franchise somewhat lacking here would be Kirby... at least on consoles. Where's that Kirby Wii, hm Nintendo?

To be fair, you need to holla at HAL, rather than just Nintendo. They're the ones who "quietly" canceled the original GC game, just as quietly moved it to the Wii, and have just been...well, quiet, regarding the game, entirely.

Obviously, they still have a mandate, as Super Star's remake delivered, and the fans responded in kind. They'd need only to just be more forth coming with information...

910
Who didn't see Sonic's final smash as Super Sonic? What else was he going to do? Run around and circles and cause a tornado to blow everyone away? Call in Tails to crash the Tornado into the field, causing a screen wide explosion?

The music could've changed to Sonic 1's Boss Music, and Dr. Eggman would have wrecked house with his Wrecking Ball formation.  8D

"Being"? No, no... they crossed that line and flew passed Sonic the second the decided Star Fox Command was going to be a gigantic furry fanfiction. Come on, you can't possibly think THIS:

...is any good. I mean, yeah, I smirked with Star Wolf and their antics ("Panther's taking you out on a hot date!" or "Hey! Missile! You Suck!") but when most of the story missions pretty much shot down any notion of a story just so two damn foxes would [tornado fang]/backstab each other, never mind the game was pretty garbage to begin with, they've far shot passed Modern-Day Sonic in terms of lack of quality.

Riddle me this, though, STM my friend:

Was Command at least fully PLAYABLE? As far as, no serious glitches or things of that nature? 8D

That's not even something that a number of modern-day Sonic games can truly claim, ESPECIALLY Sonic 06; speaking of which, that particular game's got just as bad of a storyline (if not arguably worse).

I'll agree that Command was a bad game, just like Sonic 06 was a bad game. But if it came down to it, I would give Command the edge in being a "less crappy" game than Sonic 06. If that means any thing in the least...  8D

Besides, I'm willing to give the Star Fox franchise more of a "benefit" as opposed to Sonic, because, well, for one, it has had fewer games, and furthermore, it's been changing hands between devs over the course of years, from game to game.

If the case were to happen that even EAD couldn't deliver on a Star Fox game, then I would think that Fox McCloud is in the same place as modern Sonic.

All the same, I can't help but be concerned when we haven't heard anything about another Star Fox game for a while, and knowing that Nintendo has gone through Rare, Namco, and now these guys trying to lend Star Fox to someone capable.

It's just a thing that happens a lot in this industry. Star Fox is certainly not the only Ninty franchise that has been traded off to different "hands", as it were.

Various Mario spin offs were handed off to the likes of Hudson (Mario Party) and Camelot (Golf). Even Zelda was handled by Capcom & Flagship, who did the Oracle and Minish Cap games.

I'd like to think that, eventually, Nintendo will either a) stop toying around, and just get EAD to do a game or b) if the case happens that Namco gets the go-ahead again, they'll do the DAMN THING this time around. Honestly, I was hoping more along the lines of "Ace Combat (with Furries this time)" when it came to Assault, instead I got what everyone else did with that game.  -u-'

So again...if Namco is the one, they had oughta bring their A-game. Quite honestly, I can't stress it enough...the StarFox brand is precariously close to being in modern-day Sonic's territory. Whatever could be in the pipeline HAS to change the course, if the legacy is to be restored to what it had from the original, and especially SF64's legacies.

Quote
And for Starfox Command, they force-fed the stylus control.

Possibly so, but as one who tried as such, let me tell ya. Even playing the game with something closer to "traditional controls" (using Action Replay Codes) does NOT improve the game that much. It's still a pretty lackluster game, as a StarFox title or otherwise.

It matters to the fans. That establishes right in it's ownsome as a viable discussion. *shrugs* I would hope you think so aswell.

But still, it shouldn't really matter. This is basically nothing more than the opinions of a guy talking out of his ass. As is noted above, he's not even responsible for what most herald as the crown jewel of the series (64). Hell, let it be said that the LAST game he was involved with, was Command, on the DS. Y'know, the rather crappy game that most people probably have reserved as the "black sheep" of the series.  8D

In short, this is little more than some thing on the level of a guy like Itagaki talking trash about Tekken/Virtua Fighter/DMC/etc. There's no real reason to care about what he's saying, much less get all butt-hurt over it.

Furthermore, just because HE'S not interested in making a Star Fox game, in no way means that the series is "doomed", much less that Nintendo can make a new game on their own (or get another party to make it for them). In fact, if Command was the last sample of what he can do with the product, then it's perhaps for the best that he's not involved. Really, the only questions should be are when it's going to come, how it's going to be done, and (most importantly, imo) WHO is making it.

Get EAD on a game, do more to take us back to where the series SHOULD be (awesome space battles in [tornado fang]-awesome space fighters), and it will just be a thing of beauty.

Also, something from GAF that deserved to be shared:

What we need is to bring bavck that gameplay balance that Sonic possessed in the nineties.

Not likely going to happen, unfortunately.

See, the thing that's probably MOST important to note is that, Sonic was as good as he was in the nineties, because he was made of the sum of great parts. Without those parts, he doesn't amount to much.

Naka and his original game code. Oshima and his character designs. Yasuhara and his level design. These are (arguably) the three main cornerstones that made Sonic what he was. All of the "Blast Processing" campaigning, the "hip" mascot character, marketing and all that? Wouldn't have meant a hill of beans if these three guys didn't have their hands involved in the project, and then came together to deliver something truly special.

Now-a-days, all 3 of those guys are off, doing their own thing, leaving Iizuka and the rest of modern Sonic Team to piddle along, and just churn out more Sonic games for kids to beg their parents to buy for Christmas.

It's basically the same thing for why Square Enix should probably NEVER do another Chrono game. Without the original people involved, it would likely end up being just something that would just sully the legacy of Chrono Trigger, and who wants that?

I don't know, I actually think Sonic Team could do really well with Tails' Adventure 2. They seem to like really cheesy storylines and extra characters; this might actually be a good way to have Tails and Marine/Cream/Wave/Big or maybe even some other lesser known characters work as a team and allow for co-op play.

No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't give them ideas!  8D

I was right. Wonder why she wasn't implemented in time.

Probably because "Scamco" (as the company is sometimes called on GAF 8D) had the foresight to know that they were going to do something with that character/concept any way, it was more of a thing of just a matter of time and how they were going to implement her.

917
I thought we might have been clashing on how the player "earns their speed," but I don't think we even disagree on that.

But even then, a beginner player should still be able to get a darn good time. In fact, it should be like Sonic CD; get unlockables via Time Attack (and not ranking, **** ranking).

Agreed.

Quote
And OH GOD, SONIC THE FIGHTERS.
In a collection called Sonic GEMS.
GEM?! Nuh uh! No!

Hah! Say what you will, but even the likes of denizens from SRK.com can agree that Sonic the Fighters had its merits. If AM2 was given the tap to make a sequel, I'd likely would get behind such a game. AM2 is one of the few "houses" within Sega that delivers consistently, even when it comes to "tie-in" games.  8D

Furthermore, the whole notion of the collection being called "Sonic Gems" is, of course, left up to the eye of the beholder.

CD? A definitive gem. The 3 Bare Knuckle/Streets of Rage games (in the JP version)? DEFINITELY gems, even if they're not the least bit related to Sonic.

However....Spinball GG? Tails Sky Patrol? Sonic Drift 2? Sonic R?  8D Yeah, no.

Quote
No, you know what I'd buy from Sonic Team?

Tails' Adventure 2. For the DS and/or PSP. That, I would buy.

Agreed, again. I would love it very much, if they made a sequel to the Metroid-like Sonic game they crafted. Plus, after so long of being reduced to Sonic's lil cheerleader all over again, maybe another solo role will up his street cred again.

However, without Aspect (the original developer of that game), I dunno how I would feel about such a game in other's hands.

I just don't know the reason  why would they make a SD Gundam G Gen game for the wii? -_-

Because....the last few SD Gundam games have been released on the GC/Wii?  8D

Yeah, they weren't Gen games, but they were SD Gundam still.

And furthermore, having a game like this available for the Wii will just do more to (ideally) move more units, as well as try and gauge if it would be probable to move this series to the Wii, when the PS2 FINALLY decides to perish.  -u-'

919
Agreed up until this point.

See, they're already making you, "earn your speed", and they're doing it through inane Gimmicks and those god-forsaken Boost Rings.

On top of that, enemies now have health bars. Sonic Unleashed did a little bit to alleviate this during the day stages, but that benefit was equally destroyed by the blur effect of the Dash Boost and the poor camera angle, not to mention floaty jump physics.

All in all, though, you're just doing more to elaborate on what I'm talking about.

Gimmicks. Married together to bad physics, bad camera AI and etc.

These are the things that are just proof to how modern ST does NOT get it. They rather just add on to the long-standing problems the series has, without adequately addressing that which should be fundamental things to make a solid Sonic game (or hell, just a solid game, period).

Quote
And as far as "earning your speed", yeah, okay, I will grant you that memorizing the stage layouts of the S3&K and Sonic CD stages is the reason why I (or any other gamer, for that matter) can get through stages in record times. I'll grant you that.
But at the same time, even the beginner players got to feel that speed by way of stage design, especially in Sonic 2 where Emerald Hill and Chemical Plant Zone had loop-de-loops that made your jaw drop, skill level regardless. In fact, there was more skill and reward in how you landed after those segments than in actually obtaining the speed.

What I'm trying to get at though, is that "earning" the speed came from being able to actually utilize the level, the solid physics engine, and Sonic's own momentum, all to your advantage.

That much was definitely present in the older games. As time has gone on, in this modern era, it either hasn't been so much of a part, or just utterly passed-over.

But hey, it is what it is, when it comes to modern Sonic. Won't be buying any more Sonic games, unless a) they get their act together, or b) AM2 makes a new "Sonic the Fighters".  8D

922
Sonic Adventure 1 was a good start for Sonic, although it'll be harder for it to make the transition to 3D simply because it is faster-paced. The good news is, though, that even the "fast" segments of the Genesis games were, in their own ways, "on rails" like Sonic Adventure would occasionally force the player into (see: Windy Valley). Look back at Chemical Plant, Stardust Speedway, Hydrocity, even Emerald Hill; you could go VERY fast, but you had relatively little control at that point. So what the 3D Sonic games need to do is still have that speed, but give up the control and make the settings eye-catch more. Then, put the control back in the player's hands for the platforming segments (save for its glitches, see: Final Egg).

Disagree a bit with this statement.

See, what's still essentially the problem with modern Sonic games, is that they try to focus all on speed, and think that's the "return to Sonic's roots" that we've been waiting for.

And...that's wrong. Simply put.

There was much more that made the "glory days" of Sonic's 16-bit era what they were. It was solid level design married to a tight physics engine, which all did more to play up to Sonic's "pinball-like" nature. In the old days, you had to "earn" the right to make Sonic go fast...by the time you did so, you felt proud of yourself that you were able to get to that fast.

As long as modern day Sonic Team does NOT get that, they'll never make a Sonic game that TRULY goes back to Sonic's roots, either 3D or 2D. That's why the tagline has been worthless since they started touting it around Sonic Heroes, and will continue to be so.
