You know, you did a wonderful job of actually proving my point!  8D

Like I said, Pokemon hasn't evolved yet because it doesn't need too. It's not stubbornness, it's just simple business. Why change something that works so well already? It still sells millions based on the essentially the same, primary formula from Red & Blue with a few tweaks here and there, and it has ZERO, repeat, ZERO competition. I mean, if I were to properly define the genre of game it is, it's essentially an Adorable Battle Collection RPG (an ABCRPG if you will), and there's no other game like it that's out or even comes close to dethroning it. It has what we in the board game industry call a Monopoly on its genre and audience, as well as has a marketing campaign second only to YuGiOh in sheer brilliance. (second because you spend a fuckton more on YuGiOh cards than you do Pokemon). But Pokemon is not like Metroid, Zelda,, Final Fantasy, WoW, or any other game franchise because it has nothing to stop it or really take that much money away from it.

Honestly, I'm glad a Pokemon MMO hasn't come out yet, cause as proven by their lack of online functionality for their systems, it wouldn't do well. However, what I hope is with their next system, it will have the capability & dedicated servers (and I can't [tornado fang]ing stress enough how a Pokemon MMO will need it's own dedicated servers) to fully support a Pokemon MMO. If and when they do though, it will make them billions, cause again, it'll have no competition. But this is why it can last forever. Because they haven't even tapped the franchise's full potential yet.
Nintendo has been in a very "safety mode" state for awhile. They refuse to do anything with their software that isn't based on past franchises, or that hasn't got mass overall appeal. They're a company, sure, but I kinda miss it when they took risks in the past. And seeing it as they have the comfort to take risks, I wish they did, with one or two franchise titles. It's honestly losing all of the magic people say Nintendo has. Kinda like a retread of Disney.

And that comfortable position is exactly why almost none of their franchises evolve into something exciting, nor do they attempt to create a new one. It's gotten into Total Boredom Territory for me. I wish there was a reason for Pokémon to evolve. A worthy competitor, something that would actually give it a run for its money in a way that would scare Nintendo. The company really needs stable competition these days, or they'll just get more and more like Apple. Which is all about just giving us the destination instead of throwing us on an awesome trip to get there. Nintendo needs trouble. They need something absolutely horrible happening to them.

Not sure if Im getting you right, but its because 3Dvanias seem to always either fail hard, or just be unimpressive at best. For the longest time, Castlevania always had issues with 3D.
I have no idea why. I mean... want 3D Metroidvania done right? It's called Batman: Arkham Asylum. Heck, even the first Devil May Cry felt like an evolution of the concept.

Crash Team Racing and Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing are both the superior MASTER RACE KARTERS. =P

SOLD~!
...Nice singing O_oa People want me to try WRPGs but idk. As long as I don't have creepy fake people in my face all the time.
Which WRPGs are you talking about with the "fake people"? Oblivion? Graphics really aren't that bad. Do you just play games with stylized people, no realistic-looking faces at all?

Okay, understood.
I'll try to get Burnout for either PC or PSP one of these days. Seems like a fun game. : D
I'll also pick up KOTOR1 when I have the time (and money).

Thanks.
I'll PM you a good link.

Well mostly I don´t like any RPG that has random encounters and the battles are really just the classic turn based battles...The only appeal is their story and characters...but if the gameplay is boring and repetive it happens that I forget playing it.
Also I can´t stand games where I have to use a guide.
Oh, as I said, I like horror games...as long as I am not playing them, alone, with the lights turned off...I´ve played Clocktower once...for 10 minutes...paranoia for a week.
MMOs always seemed to me like timewaster with no real payoff.
RTS...I´m not that great of a strategist..especially not videogame strategy so I would end up getting my sorry butt kicked.

Also simulators and dating games...you have no chance of convincing me playing those.
I'm repeating myself alot in terms of recomendations, but why don't you try out a western RPG? The battles are more strategic in nature and ALOT more immediate, no boring turn-based repetitive animations, the characters just do the immediate moves, and although turn-based systems still work, the battles themselves look seamless.

As for horror, there are plenty of horror-entry games. You just gotta find where in the scale you locate.
Play Resident Evil 4, which is an action game with a few scares and horror elements. Then play something like Dead Space, a direct evolution of that concept into scarier territory.

It really depends on the MMO too. I hate the tedious grind, but when it comes to something like Phantasy Star Online, where you directly control your character and it feels more like a linear level progression with co-op buddies and rad bosses, I love it. You can also play the Spiral Knights beta, which is basically old-style Zelda on PC.

While RTS? Try Pharaoh. Not only it makes you feel incredibly good, but it's one hell of a game. You start out with two dingy sheds in the desert, then when you notice, you got a badass civlization.

And "simulation" has alot of definitions. You probably played a few already. What kinds of simulation are you talking about? Because you're not giving them a chance.

Actually I have the MGS series, but I haven't had the time to play it yet.
None of them? Well, what time like the present? MGS1 is the best-aged game there is. Still handles brilliantly.

Just throw something at me.
First, tell us your non-tastes and games you haven't given a chance to yet.

Burnout, huh? It depends, are there any parts of the series for PC/PSP?

Western RPG, huh? I actually wanted to buy Mass Effect (1 and 2) once, but when I found out that the first one is not available anymore anywhere, I gave up.
I might try to pick it up someday though.

Oh, and I played a bit of KOTOR 2... if that counts.
Play KOTOR 1 for PC. KOTOR 2 is a bit unrelated.

And Burnout, depends on the kind of PC you got. If it's a good one, get Burnout Paradise. If not, get Burnout Legends or Burnout Dominator for the PSP.

To you maybe, I enjoyed it.
Tastes can't be discussed. Level design and gameplay quality, however, can.

Quote
I never have had a problem with the Disappearing blocks, I've never really had trouble with Unleashed's controls either, what level are you talking about anyway?
That Greece thing, level 2, the one with the rails. But most levels just had a horrible, horrible design anyway. Pitfalls out of nowhere, completely nonintuitive designs, a game based on running with parts where it was forced trial and error over and over.

Quote
If I had the money maybe. but I don't.

Oh, and despite how everybody (even SEGA themselves) has advised against it, I want to play Sonic 06 just to see how bad it is.

I guess I like inflicting pain unto myself.
It is very bad. Very, very bad. Bad as in stopping mid-loop and being stuck in the middle. Bad as in whenever you have a teammate with you, the framerate and game stutters as if it was chug chugging. Bad as in PS1 textures in certain buildings and no effects on anything. Bad as in using the Havok engine for physics and just sticking a ton of models in there without even checking if the gameplay works. Bad as in 90% of the times you jump off a wall with Knuckles, it doesn't work, and you get a glitch which sticks you to the wall unless you're hit by something.

Very, very, very, veeeeeery bad. Which sucks, because they honestly had a chance to pull out SA3 here. The game style was right, but then everything turned out the most horrible thing of all time.

You know what's sad? The reason why I haven't seriously tried any WRPGs is because I hate the animation. And sometimes the art. I'm not as badly Animuuuuuuuuuuu as I seem but when the uncanny valley kicks in I get uncomfortable.
Get your hand into some WRPGs if you haven't. They can be absolutely amazing games. You actually feel like you're taking part in a story, and that your choices matter.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFz_NbEIZrg[/youtube]

Should be reason enough.

You should try Super Robot Wars (at least the obtainable ones), it's system's basic enough to get ya goin' in the SRPG department, if you like giant robots piloted by crazy ladies~

Basically, most games don't bug me unless it's a gambling sim. I don't know why but I just don't.. Must be because I am not much of a gambler or something, same with dating games, I'll try my luck IRL, thanks. I'm content as long as the game doesn't throw me into the water at 250mph in-game speed in platformers too.
Try DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball. =P

Thing is, Sonic 06 wasn't a game. It was a pile of bugs that couldn't even be called an alpha version. Comparable only to Big Rigs in my mind.

Sonic Unleashed wasn't a bad game.
Yes it was.

Quote
Granted a little cheap at times, but not bad.
Megaman 9's disappearing blocks are cheap. Unleashed's levels are comparable to a bad romhack. Falling right in the beginning of a level if you don't push the jump buttom one second after the level begins... what the hell?

Quote
Then again, I LIKE the werehog segments.
Yeah, I get it. Play some of the games those sections were inspired in, like God of War. It'll be revealing.

TvC was MUCH worse than Brawl, service-wise.  You don't have to be a tournament-level fighter to realize that lag and Shoryuken command inputs don't mix.  Plus it's a LOT harder to excuse in one-on-one connections.  In my experience Brawl usually holds up well until the fourth person enters.

And I don't have a problem with lacking identity in karts, I'm content to simply be that random Yoshi/Daisy player with an obscure Saturday Night Live name reference.  I have a problem with the grand item farking, which is not a complaint one would expect an all-Bob-omb Brawler to make, but in kart every damn time you turn around someone hit a POW block/Blooper/Lightning/any of the two-dozen ways to make you drop your items.  There's a ludicrously excessive amount of "hit everyone" and "disarm" going on, which I sincerely hope they cut down on for Kart 3DS.
Thing is, TvsC was essencially attempting to be a serious fighter, while Brawl is a fun party game that people [sonic slicer] about not being able to play seriously. I'm fine with fighter game lag on Brawl. All fighting games have online lag. But the game itself was coded online SO BADLY, it was probably one of the very worst online modes I have ever seen in any game whatsoever.

And in terms of Mario Kart, you and other people may not know this, but it was the first Wii game that got to the point of having... well, a mediocre online system which every single XBox/360/PS3 game had so far. The normal required options, the modes, and the necessary speed to play. At this time, anyone else used to regular online gameplay wasn't pleasantly surprised. I just went "Really? Oh, that's cool, I guess". Identities are really important in online games these days. Having a profile, having an actual way to see what kind of games you play, to be able to play with that person again...

I hate the fact that Nintendo's multiplayer is basically ChatRoulette.

Seriously? Why do people find Dark Super Sonic so goddarn special? I just see the form as just another variant of the "Dark Soul" thing that started waay back in stories. It's not that special. Did we give a [parasitic bomb] about chris? Yes, we bitched about him taking most of the spotlight in the Adventure 2 arc, but there are those that glorified FoxxPlant romance and lol dark form. What was the point of ending the main adventure at episode 52 and continue to add the post-game scenario later on? I find it pointless. I also hate Cosmo. I can't see why Sonic fantards praise this thing.. >.>

This is me bitching about the potential that was Sonic X, an anime with an already wasted potential. We had a kickass OVA, why couldn't the anime follow that formula? Idunno.. but it's one of those things why the western cartoon trilogy (Sonic SATAM, AoSTH, and Underground) seems to surpass this one in my POV..
Hm...

AoStH: [tornado fang] YEAH LOONEY TUNES SLAPSTICK
SatAM: Villains were [tornado fang] year. Heroes, not so much.
Underground: No. Just no. No, no, no.
OVA: BEST ALL YEARS EVERY YEAR
X: First ep was pretty darn cool. The rest was SO DAMN BAD. BUT JUST SO DAMN BAD. And it pains me, because I remember being so excited about this show, back in the SA2 days.

Then the whole franchise went down the shitter until the recent Colors. Instead of following through with the Adventure canon and making more awesome games like that, with the "Seven Chaos Are The Servers" plot, and the whole thing where the new look and green eyes actually made sense.

In that case, then you might like it. It is fairly action packed, but it DOES have some nice platforming. Unlike GoW, it is not just a hack'nslash. It has platforming elements to it. For ever large GoW style fight, there is a few platformer parts.
And there is definitely more of a story to the game than GoW. Especially towards the middle -> end. (in fact, thats where the game as a whole seems to pick up the pace... weird...)
I'll definetly try it out, then. The game itself looks quite interesting.

964
Yeah, too bad brawlers had one of the worst online services I've EVER seen in a game, and karters, although having the basis of a decent online, without identities, made most of it irrelevant.

965
I think you misunderstood me, because in most ways I will tell you that Nintendo's online tactics are shot to hell.  What I meant is that they're good about keeping it worldwide, as in, not region-locked (the one area where Capcom faltered in Monster Hunter Tri).  I'd have been very surprised if Japanese, EU, and US 3DS Miis were unable to mingle with each other.
Ah, my bad then. And they probably will, since the Wii's Mingle option had no region lock either.

Well I mostly like RPGs, Sims like Animal Crossing, a few puzzle games here or there, and platformers though I suck at them.

Hmm you know I've never played a game that was made by a random person like I want to be the Guy and Cave Story or Dojin games like Touhou before though I think I might get seriously murdered by the games if I do.  I also think I've never played a WRPG either.
You know, for anyone who's never played a WRPG before, I'd definetly recomend Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. It really doesn't matter if you're not into SW, the game is absolutely amazing and it has a fantastic story and overall experience. It's something everyone should experience at least once. It's seriously a game where you're your own character.

God of War is a pretty good game. I've grown tired of it personally because the gameplay remained the same throughout the whole titles, but it's still amazing on its own. And quite fun.

And I guess my game'll be Goldeneye 007. It's the one "historic" game I haven't tried. I'll be stuck to the Wii remake, though.

Gaming / Re: The "Open Your Mind" Gaming Challenge!

Hmm...this is gonna be tricky, it's perhaps gonna go down to more w/ games I didn't felt like trying than simply genre-wise.

Let's see.

I have played a fair share of JRPGs and little of WRPGs, although what I played I enjoyed alot (except maybe Paladin's Quest for the SNES), and there are some I haven't finished (one guilty admittance is Planescape:Torment).  Same case w/ smhups, few shooters, fighters, action, adventure, etc etc.

Hmm...actually w/ FPSes, I always prefered the campaign focused ones (the bit that I played of Bioshock for example, or Halo) or the few that more along the way of teamwork (such as Left4Dead); but never had a big interest on multiplayer focus (such as the CoD series).

Hmm...

Okay games I didn't have an interest nor much care to try would have to be at the top of my head:

-Any Call of Duty
-God of War series
-Sims
-games like Roller Coaster Tycoon
-The older Peter Molyneux games before Fable (Black and White, and this carpet-ish game)
-the more abstract RTSes outside of Starcraft, Warcraft.
-MMOs in general
-Dino Crisis, Alone in the Dark series.
-I guess the Odyssey series would go here...had an interest but never put the effort to try them out.

Hmm...I guess this works for now.

Great suggestions. Rollercoaster Tycoon is an amazing game, and you should try some of the best RTS series out there, like Total War. Molyneux's games were also really great. I'd recomend Theme Hospital and Syndicate, although they might be kind of old. For now, why not try out a recent title? Call of Duty 4 or God of War should both be really easy to get.

I also need to stick in here my own thing. Let's see...

I like pretty much any sort of game, and give every single thing I see a try. But I have to say, I am kind of dismissive of most japanese RPGs, the kind that feature heavy grinding and the usual plots.
I kind of dismiss series like Dynasty Warriors, because most of which I played just seem the exact same.
Might seem amazing, but I have NEVER played Goldeneye 007. Ever.
I am not very fond of dating sims/visual novels either, but there might be some good ones I haven't played yet.
I have never played much of a Harvest Moon game, past the first few days. I might try one out.
I have never given much of a chance to any Professor Layton game. Might try one out as well.

Any recomendations?

Yep. Pokemon hasn't evolved yet because Pokemon doesn't need to evolve yet. The core 2 games still are extremely high sellers, despite essentially being the same game repackaged, just with a different battle system, newer Pokemon, and slightly newer graphics. The primary story is still the same. The primary goal is still the same. Since Red & Blue, not much has changed, and alot of the gaming generation that has grown up with it still play it, and are now passing it on to their children, their nephews & nieces, and so on, because they know first hand it's a game that they'll enjoy and can play. Hell, they've even literally made remakes of Red & Blue and recently Gold & Silver, and people bought it like crazy. The remakes sell more than most games do nowadays.

Plus, unlike Final Fantasy, Pokemon is not based around the story. Final Fantasy now has competition when it comes to its "grand story telling" genre with companies like Rockstar, Bioware, and so on. Plus the gameplay is overall different, so you can find one you like better. Pokemon has literally ZERO competition when it comes what the game offers overall. And whereas Final Fantasy and games of the like eventually end, Pokemon continues on. You can level up your favorites to 100. You can constantly battle with friends, building so many new team combinations. And the main thing is, you can continue to transfer your data, your Pokemon, over to the next game, in order to continue the trademarked process of catching them all.

Also, the anime doesn't need to evolve, cause it has only ONE purpose: to sell the franchise, both in terms of the game, the plushies, the figures, the card game, etc. It's no different than the Transformers or G.I. Joe cartoons from back in the day, except it's lasted much much longer, and continuously pumps out season after season, movie after movie, and is kiddish enough to never get taken off the air due to "extreme violence" or other such BS. It also has a trading card game which, despite the strength of both Magic & YuGiOh, is still played to this day. In fact, at PAX I saw they are putting their trading card game online now.

There's still so much more they can do with the brand too. They can make more console based Pokemon games like the 2 on the GameCube. They can put out a new Pokemon Stadium game on the Wii and watch that fly off the shelf. The 3rd gen will probably have a 3DS remake on the way sooner or later. ShinyRuby & SparklingEmerald, or something like that, and it will make millions. Hell, all Nintendo would have to do if they want to break the bank wide open is make a Pokemon MMO. It'd make billions. All without really having to change the basic, million dollar making formula.

Pokemon will last as long as Mario because it offers the key main ingredient Mario does: it appeals to all ages. Your basic Mario game is easy to learn and is a great starting point for the younger gamer getting into an adventure type game. Not to mention all the fun sports games, Mario Party games, Mario Kart, and other such genres & games with the plumbers' beloved face on it. Plus, like with New Super Mario Bros Wii & the other genres I mentioned, it is a game that can be played with all members of the family, from the youngins getting into it to the parents & adults who have grown up with it and still play it. Pokemon, in that regard, is no different. The older generation of Pokefans are now breeding as well, or have nieces and nephews, and their younger generation can easily jump into the Pokemon world, especially with the Saturday Morning Cartoon telling them they've gotta catch em' all constantly, with their school friends playing it, their aunts & uncles, and even possibly their parents. And unlike when the original GB games came out, there is now better online communities you can go to, to meet new trainers, to talk with people about your favorites, to battle them, and so on. Pokemon is built not just around the core 2 games that come out, but around the community that plays it. It's clearly built upon meeting with other trainers and playing them. I've seen it at every PAX I've been too. I see it on RPM. And I see zero signs of it ever stopping.
All franchises sooner or later, have to evolve. I can't see Pokémon keeping the same appeal forever. Transformers and GI Joe have both evolved ALOT by keeping up with the tastes of the people, while Mario has evolved in his own way, setting up trends. Pokémon is a game which has got to evolve, but Nintendo are being very stubborn about it. But a franchise might stop dead in its tracks at any moment. It's doing very well now, but it's pretty much keeping up its number one spot in the "only RPG everyone plays" place. Get a franchise more interesting than it, for all ages, and Pokémon is done for. Currently, it's in a WoW-like position, enjoying its victory. It has the promise of always giving us the same thing over and over and over again, because it simply makes money from that. But all big things can fall.

I'm not gonna lie. I'm honestly hoping something absolutely horrible and terrible happens to the franchise. Because that's when generally shake-ups and changes happen. And change = good. Heck, Nintendo aren't making a Pokémon MMO, purely because of the same old tired restrictions they put on every single game, with the "everyone is a pedophile" logic. If they actually made a good Pokémon MMO, and marketed it in the right way, with an amazing online setup and stable servers, it would have an oportunity unlike any other before: It could dethrone WoW. Maybe a change in the anime. New cast, more interesting plot, make it so everyone's talking about it once more and not "oh, that's the thing I quit watching when I was ten". Kids are always going to watch it, and adults would be interested in it once more.

Something horrible needs to happen. Not for anyone's sake. But for the sake of keeping things interesting.

Flash, I recommend watching some playthroughs. I dont know where the demo stops, so id say somewhere after that.

or hell, considering you pirate it, just pirate it, and if you dont like it, well, no money lost. :P
I honestly don't know. See, what I don't like in God of War, is that the game keeps throwing nonstop action at me, but the combos and gameplay never really change. Honestly? I just want some interesting enemies to fight, a decent amount of cutscenes to keep me occupied with a halfassed story, decent enough gameplay to be responsive, and characters that don't make me slap my face in fury.

Gaming / Re: The "Open Your Mind" Gaming Challenge!

Alright, finally back! Let's get this thing started!

I'll just post the genres I don't like:
-MMO
-RPG (not included Mario RPG and Action RPG and Metroidvanias)
-Strategy
-Horror (I enjoy watching LPs but playing them myself?...)
-Tycoon games
-Simulators
I'd like to take part on this little "Experiment", though honestly I don't feel like choosing the game on my own so I'd ask you to give me a good tip.
Well, it entirely depends on what game and genre you'd like to pick yourself. For example, when you say "RPG", do you mean western, or japanese RPGs? They're very different. And in terms of horror games, there are plenty of amazing ones to ease you into the genre, and end up making you love it. As for MMOs, all it takes is one great experience. Heck, I'll lead you through Phantasy Star Online myself if you want. Choose what kind of game you want first. Then, ask for suggestions.

@Blackhook: MMOs are totally fun if you're playing with a lot of friends. With voice chat. =D

@Flash: I don't run around trying out all kinds of RTS games but I'm talking about the war-based type I guess. I screw up on them easily and they frustrate me so~ :<!

I actually almost started liking Fire Emblem. Until I got stuck.

I'm just not good with strategy.

Oh yeah, I also like sandbox games 8D I guess the best way to describe how I like my gaming is that I do it for the 'experience'. It needs to be engaging enough so I don't feel like I'm just a spectator but it has to be relaxing and intuitive enough so I don't feel like I'm working @_@
And not boring/repetitive enough to hurt my fingers/thumbs
Aha! But there are plenty others you can try out. Fire Emblem's really not an entry game into strategy RPGs. Heck, you could start with a really easy one, like Rhapsody. Every battle is quite easy, and all cutscenes are musicals. Disgaea has alot of eye-candy in moves. And a game like Valkyria Chronicles is AMAZING, no matter what your taste is.

As for RTS games, you could try playing some Age of Empires 2. You start out by building a civilization, and facing other civilizations. It's a great entry game into the genre, and although there's RTS wars, there's also plenty of city-building to do, gathering resources and such. I'll try and think of some more.

Okay... so...

I don't really like dem strategy gaems, unless it's a SRPG, and even then not all of them. In fact, almost none of them. So far I only enjoyed Disgaea and Soul Nomad. Couldn't get into FFT, for some reason. Always quittiing after the tutorial or during it. I considered getting FFT WAR OF THE KITTIES(LIONS) but I dunno.

I don't really like dem shootan gaems. I mean, I did enjoy Half-Life a bit, but overall never really played them that much. Last shootan gaem I enjoyed and bought is Transformers - War for Cybertron.

I don't really like that much turn based jrpgs, I prefer them more action like Tales series. I never beat any Final Fantasy game because of that, though the ones out of all i played and which I liked the most was FF6 and FF9. Also, Squall is a [Top Spin]. Oh, and Earhbound... I really liked Earthbound.

I don't like sports games... in fact, I abhore very thought of  playing any of them. So please, don't even tell or suggest me to play them. I'm warning you. I know what this challenge is about but... no, just no.

I don't like riding games, with exception of Mario Kart, Crash WHATEVER Kart and maybe some others. Otherwise, no.

I on the other hand like dem platformers. With favorite series being MEGAMAN (obviously), RAYMAN, and SANYK. I don't enjoy all the games from these series, considering some of them aren't platformers at all, or just simply suck balls... but yeah. You get the point.
OH and MARIO too.

I like dem Action JRPGS like the Tales of series. But I already mentioned that earlier. : >

I like adventure games, as in point n'click, bonus points if it's a humorous game, like Sam & Max. : D
Additional bonus points if it's well voice acted too. LIKE SAM & MAX! : DD

I like... whatever genre LoK games are. I dig this kind of thing.

I kinda like SHMUPS, though I rarely play them... almost none at all. Because usually, I have no one to play with me... because it's more fun that way.

And I think that's it...
So am I supposed to choose a game from a genre I don't like myself, or will someone actually suggest me something?
Hm... I'm sooner or later going to recomend a sports game to you. =P Mostly because you have that much of a problem with them. XD Don't worry, I honestly think you have the wrong idea about them. You have little experience, just don't base your opinion on stereotypes.

You say you like games like Mario Kart, but not actual racing games. So I'm going to recomend to you a Burnout game. Dunno if you've ever played them, but I'm actually kinda certain you'll like them. Unrealistic controls, focus on constant speed and boosts, bonus points for aggressive action and combos... it's arcade all the way, simplified controls but fast high-speed action. Play any from 3 onward. Start with 3 if you can. Do you have any way to play any of them?

I'd also recomend a western RPG. If you haven't played that sort of thing. They're quite fun.

The only type of games I really don't like are ones with long, unskippable cutscenes. Otherwise, I think I've given every gaming genre a try for the most part.
Wanna try out Xenosaga, or the MGS series? =P

Game genres are questionable, and so are games themselves in terms of classification. That's why I mentioned games AND genres. If there's a CERTAIN game you really don't like but haven't really given a chance, this is your chance to judge that game fairly. That's kinda the point of the topic. New experiences and stuff.

Your choices are interesting. Can you tell me what kinds of actual experiences you've had with the games you don't enjoy? Stuff like RTS games has alot of different genres. You got stuff like Starcraft, which is entirely war-based, and you got other stuff like Age of Empires, which is focused on building a civilization and stuff. Then you have games like Pharaoh and Rollercoaster Tycoon, which are RTS but focused on management and the like. Schmups are a tough genre to find an entry-level game to get you to experience them, but RTS have quite a way to be great, on many different styles and formats.

As for turn-based strategy, I'll think of something, and I'll ask other people around here, participants or not, to try and think of good games as well. We want good, introductory games, not just your favorites!

Hack and slashers are also something which can get deeper within certain genres, and some can even be mixed with platforming and the like. I'm going to have lunch now, but I'm gonna be back with more suggestions and my own entry!

Gaming / The "Open Your Mind" Gaming Challenge!
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:07:19 PM »
Alright, people. Let's do this.

This is a challenge for anyone interested, and I hope alot of people accept.

Everyone has games, or genres, which they have no fondness for. Which they aren't interested in, don't have time for, and somehow, those genres and games get alot of attention and are widely respected in gaming culture. Classic gamers aren't very interested in more modern experiences, and vice versa. People who go through big story-based games aren't interested in the yearly sports game, and vice-versa. People who like JRPGs, don't like WRPGs, and vice versa. We all know the stereotypes, and we all have a little bit of gaming prejudice in our closets, which comes out when we want to scoff at the people who like games that are inferior to our MASTER RACE GENRE.

What I'm proposing, is this. You apply for the challenge, give a quick description of your favoured genres. What you like, and what you don't like. And here's the kicker... you have to be TRUTHFUL about this: You're not gonna play a game you assumedly don't like because of your own experience. So you're gonna play a game which you admittedly haven't given a real chance. (EVERYONE has games like these. Yes, EVERYONE) Then when you play it, you'll take a few screenshots or pictures, or whatever's at hand, and relay your experience with the game to the people. The important thing is to relay the experience as you go, while you enjoy the game yourself. We're not trying to make Let's Plays here, just what's your whole experience is being like, and what you're up to in the game.

There are a few rules we have to set up here, though. To make this a fun experience (apologies for the overuse of this word).

1- Whatever game you choose, it'll have to be a game that you haven't really given a real chance to. No playing a game you actually experienced enough to the point of disliking it outright.
2- No picking games which are widely considered to be weak examples of the genre. Whatever you pick, no matter how many underground fans a crappy thing has, it has to be widely regarded as a good game.
3- You don't have to finish the game. But you do have to at least experience it as much as you can, suck in alot of the genre magic, alot of what makes the game fun. If you play it for hours and still have yet to have any fun at all, you're welcome to finish your experience.
4- NO QUITTERS. And I do mean that in the sense of "tutorial's not being fun. Can I go now?" Play the game at your own pace, take breaks of how much time you want, but at least make the effort to play it.
5- No multiplayer stuff, at least if you can help it. We'll be focusing on campaign-only games (single player for youse peoples) for now. If a game is multiplayer-only, or the experience is made much better in multiplayer, whether it's versus or co-op, play with good friends and not random net griefers. And play with someone who knows the game, so they can try and make you have a good experience.
6- Don't go hating. Give the game a chance. Comment on other people's experience as well. Don't spoil. Help others enjoy their own experience. Just... the obvious things that don't need saying.
7- I don't want people to waste a fortune in a game they might not end up enjoying. But I don't want a plethora of "emulateable classics only" here either. Both old and new experiences, please. But try to choose games which are either cheap, or can be illegally obtained without alot of guilt on the way. If you need any game yourself, approach me by PM and I'll see what I can do about anything you choose.

I dunno if this'll be successful, but I hope it is. The main point of all of this, is to get you to try out entirely new experiences, and put simply, to have fun with them. To try out completely new experiences you haven't really given a shot, and to make it so there's less scoffing between genres and games.

I'll enter this myself, but I want to see how much attention this gets, and how many takers. I'll edit the post later so I can put in a list of whoever is doing this. Hope to see plenty of open minds here!

Pokemon will last as long as Mario.
Nope. See, Pokémon is a franchise that lasts upon that popularity of the two games released every three-five years or so, and then it grows an immediate structure. The anime that follows the same world of the game with the old characters that will never ever evolve, a few spinoff games, the community...

Now, I can't see the community giving up on their thing. Heck, I couldn't see this community disappear from the map if there were no Megaman games for ten years because you guys are just too damn stubborn.

But it is not a franchise that can evolve and bend as much as Mario. Pokémon are probably the one franchise that Nintendo just doesn't evolve at all (no, new features and 3D environments don't count, talking about the main game) and sooner or later, it'll reach a point where it either evolves, is whored out beyond belief, or people get tired of it to go to the next new thing. You know, kinda like what's happening to Final Fantasy right now. Still popular, but it's slowly descending.

While Mario? I don't doubt that there might be hiatuses in the future, probably when Miyamoto dies and the character goes into the Mickey Mouse territory of irrelevance-but-still-symbolic, but I certainly don't doubt that Nintendo will keep pumping out great Mario games for a looooong time, and through different kinds of interests and likings.
