« on: March 19, 2011, 12:46:55 PM »
My three favorite Split Screen memories all come from Perfect Dark...

1. During one of our many, MANY multiplayer matches, my friend Crazy Dave & I are in the middle of a shoot out between two rooms in the desert level. He comments on how this is a good fight, and I respond in this way:

PB - "Yeah, it's a great fight. But of course, like every great fight we have, it'll be ruined by Lou coming behind one of us and shooting us in the back. HERE, allow me to demonstrate!"

I turn around and just start shooting INSTANTLY as Lou somehow comes around the corner into the room. No screen looking was involved.

2. Another match involving myself, Crazy Dave, and Ninja Lou. This time we were on the level with the elevator & glass floor. As with every match, we had License to Kill mode on (one shot kills). Lou was above me and fired a grenade literally at my feet. My screen went from Orange to Red back to Orange again, and I didn't die. I literally walked right out of the fire. As Lou was struggling to make sense of it all:

PB - "Yeah Lou, I'm gonna have to let you kill me. I have no idea how the [tornado fang] I'm still alive."

This was both a gesture of honor on my part, as well as a reassurance that Lou wouldn't smash his controller.

3. This last one was just between me & Lou. I had left a Dragon gun Proxy Mine on Felicity level (the one from Goldeneye) door between the lab & bathroom. Lou was holding the K7 Avenger, the one with the threat detector, and I was literally watching his screen as he looked DIRECTLY at the point where I put the Proxy Mine, with the threat detector not detecting the threat. So, as he opens the door, KABLOOEY! My response:

PB - *laughing* "I was looking RIGHT at your screen. It DIDN'T detect the threat. That was awesome!"

And there we have it!
There is ALWAYS screen-watching. Even if you don't notice it, you're subconsciously watching it. That's the delicious factor of splitscreen. =P

Magic. And the fact that the games themselves are compatible with HD resolutions. The Wii, however, isn't.

Here's an example. Linked rather than posted because of size.

Tell ya what. Downloading Sonic Heroes. I'll post some screenshots tomorrow.

Yeah, Flash, you did use that exact video in this exact argument before.

Did someone start a New Game+ on the forum or something?
Not exactly an argument, he just asked what horribleness to expect. I showed it to him. =P

Also, I finally got the Dolphin emu working on my PC! Wonderfully, in fact. Does anyone want HD 1080p high-resolution screenshots of any Wii/Gamecube games? I'm gonna start using some of these as wallpapers.

Bitching about a game not being what it's not even trying to be is not something that makes a lot of sense to me.  Same applies to offline Brawl discussions.
See, I wasn't clear on what you meant by "identity".  The whole game-specific-code-crap, not knowing what your friends are playing, and all?  There's a club for complaining about that.  It's called Everybody, they meet at the bar.  The 3DS is taking steps to rectify that, though IMHO there is absolutely no reason they shouldn't have had their act together with the Wii.

Communication ain't Nintendo's forte, either.  I've been as frustrated by that as anyone else and I haven't even played an X-Box Live game.  You don't have to run XBL comparisons to see the problem, by any means.  The simple feeling of being cut off from your fellow players when online versus sitting down for a good local multiplayer session is pretty self-evident.  But those are complaints against basically the entire Nintendo WFC service, not of any particular game.  In that sense, Brawl is superior to Kart in that you at least get some personality in your customizable taunts.  But it is just that, customization, not communication.
Crash, I haven't played.  Sonic is fun, though the courses seem somewhat less interesting and less well-marked.  But the balance is better, gotta give it that.
Yep, most of the reasons I hate "tournament players", is because every single game has to be perfectly balanced and amazingly competitive. Jesus Christ, Melee was accidentally competitive. Just let it go, guys.

And I know. But you know me, I like to complain. And the 3DS isn't taking [parasitic bomb]. Making only one code required instead of one per game isn't taking steps, it's just streamlining and making easier a feature which should have never been there in the first place. Nintendo only does this out of children safety, but what they don't understand is that all companies deal with this crap, and they wouldn't lose their family-friendly image by allowing something which would vastly increase their product quality. Then again, they're Nintendo. If they're making money, they don't give a [parasitic bomb] about raising the bar. And taunting is nothing, since Mario Kart essencially provides you with Leaderboards and other options that are common in games nowadays. The game essencially marked an attempt by Nintendo to do things right. Thing is, when you're painting with poop, there's not much else to go but brown.

Also, about Crash, you should really try it sometime, it's (don't kill me, crazy people) superior to MK64, in alot of ways. On All-Star Racing, I actually like the tracks better, because of the big airs you can pull, and how drifting is actually an in-game mechanic, easy to pull out and constantly used, instead of just the spark thing people overuse for snaking.

Oh poo, Lets just ignore most of my comments except for the Warhawk and Mordern Warfare 2.
's cool. I honestly loved those games too, but let's not deviate into a "multiplayer general" thing.

By the way, which recent games provide with split screen? Recent as in 2010 and beyond. I know about Wii's Goldeneye, which I'm playing at the moment. Also, Killzone 3.

There was that one time I went to a Gameworks with a bud and blasted through Time Crisis 4, goshdarn was that third boss hard.
My more recent memories would be playing Modern Warfare 2 and Warhawk, very enjoyable, especially the Spec Ops missions.
The greatest memories would be of fighting games, Marvel VS. Capcom 2, Melty Blood, Street Fighter, Smash Brothers, Fate/Unlimited Codes, and Naruto, to which I'm a bit ashamed of playing-but it was good mindless fun!
Split. Screen. Means no game where you can see both players in the same screen. Or else this would be a "local multiplayer memories" topic.

Anyway, does anyone remember that the old DBZ games always had split screen when you went too far? It happened in the Mega Drive title, The Legend for Saturn and Final Bout for PS1. I always thought that was funny.

Everybody knows that splitscreen isn't as common in games as it used to be. It's usually considered a thing of the past, replaced for online. But we all have fond memories of our home multiplayer sessions with our friends, kicking ass. So let's share some of them, shall we?

Myself, my fondest Splitscreen memory is probably from playing Tony Hawk's pro Skater 2 with my friends. We'd pick Spider-Man and black suit Spider-Man, and we'd just play all day, trying to one-up each other with our combos. At a certain point, we got what was the funniest fall we'd ever seen in the game, lotsa hurt, but we all started laughing. From there on, we'd start making falls happen, trying to be hilarious as possible, making each other laugh. It was great.

I also remember the Sonic 3 races back in the Mega Drive. Multiplayer back then was basic, but it was so damn good. The levels were short and simplistic, but we still managed to make it competitive and really fast. Must've been my first splitscreen game. This one time, this kid I was playing with at a birthday party slapped me because he lost. I just went "You just angry cause you looooost!" and he cried all day. My first trolling. ;___;

Anyway, share your memories. Just don't make it 100% Mario Kart.

Gaming / Re: Castlevania
« on: March 18, 2011, 04:41:45 PM »
Lol, I know. or even the Metroid Primes. Consiering they share the same aspect of huge elaborate maps.

And yet, we still have things like Castlevania 64... And after it's failure, (Symphony was merely a side game to 64's "main current gen castlevania") they decided to go with what works, and gave IGA full reign over the series. after which we got all metroivanias.

then eventually, they tried to tackle 3D again, and came out with Lament. I guess it did alright enough to warrant Curse of Darkness, but they were both rather unimpressive. Fun, but unimpressive and meh.

And so once again, the aversion to 3D came back. And Cox comes in, and proves that you CAN make an amazing 3Dvania.
Problem is, every 3D well-made Metroidvania was made by a really good developer. I'm afraid Konami needs better talent when making their 3Dvanias.

I think I've used it before. I'm a big Sonic fan, but I'm very disappointed with how the games have been handling in the past ten years. I honestly think they're the worst popular games in the market. Colors changed that somehow, so let's hope for more good stuff.

Also, aside from Zelda, is there any good Wii game coming out this year?

Speaking of which, a reminder. This topic isn't just for the purpose of suggesting games, you're supposed to tell and photograph (if you can) your experience with the game as you play it.

Now, I need to confirm who really is in it, how the availability of these games is for you, which games you REALLY want to play, and when will you start.

Krystal: Super Robot Wars (I'm not familiar with this franchise, but there's a DS title released in the US, I think.)
Kharaxel: Burnout Legends/Dominator or Paradise
Carlos Santana: God of War
Me: Goldeneye 007 (will eventually do Layton)
Blackhook: Resi 3's not really a good game to get started in horror, but it's still a great game. I would recomend the REmake or 2 before, though.
Protoman Blues: MGS1, then?

EDIT: For the lack of confirmations and current boredom, I am beginning my own playthrough of Goldeneye.

Alright, let's see, I gotta create a new save file. Oooooh, Gamecube controller useable. Thank God. I like the wiimote for aiming, but it's a mess when it comes to turning. We'll see how the c-stick handles camera.
Intro movie's pretty cool. Anyway, starting game now.

That is true. For the most part I did enjoy the game, Level design was good at first but later just got cheap (Empire City was fine, it was Adabat day that ripped me to shreds. And don't get me started on Eggmanland.)

Oh yeah, that stage, forgot about it.
Yeah, Trial and Error was big in the later levels (ADABAT).
My main issue was the Hot Dog missions, and to be more specific, the Eggmanland ones. The time limit isn't the issue (75-65 minutes? I can get it done in 48, WHILE taking my time.) Its not dying, and in my case not dying to to PS3-version framerate hiccups. And all for a lousy hotdog that doesn't help me any (I have every stat maxed out.)

Ah, that sounds horrible.
Can't wait!  8D
Thing is, games can be made hard, but not bad. Unleashed level design had all the professionalism of a 12-year old who makes romhacks. The whole game is pretty much a guide on "how not to make a game" in terms of design.

And for a taste on Sonic 09, how about a few clips?

Wait.

Hang on a second.

Flash, did I honestly see you say you wanted a "3DS Lite" on the last page?  The thing's already smaller than every other DS that's ever been made.
I used it as a euphemism for "next model after the standard 3DS".

I just want a god damn dual analog stick DS.

This is one of the reasons why I'll be playing it with the 3D off.

Lol, good sir, new gen games aren't a possibility for me.
Also there is a psychological reason I don't play RPGs that often. While playing a RPG I can swear that I hear inside my head some nerd yelling "YOU ARE DOING IT WROOOONG!". No really.
Oh, I know that the games I mentioned aren't real horror games. After all I've mentioned that I can't play those longer than a few minutes :D
Also..I had my fair share with RTS. I've played others too but as I said, it's not really my type of games.
...Spiral knights isn't even out yet...
Why aren't they a possibility for you?

And everyone plays RPGs in their own way. That's why they're called Role-Playing Games.

And if you're scared of every little thing, play Luigi's Mansion. The closest to Baby's First Horror Game there is, and IMO, one of the best Cube titles.

Spiral Knighta has just gone into beta. Apply.

Well..to be honest I've never found WRPGs that appealing. Played Fallout and Elder Scroll I believe and I quit after one hour or so.
Most Horror games I've played were FPS(Half life, Doom, Unreal, Return to castle Wolfenstein). Clocktower was so frightening for me because you can't fight back.

Age of Empires 1 and 2,Soldiers of anarchy. I had fun with these games but each of them had thing that kept me from playing them more often.
AoE - the campaigns...yeah I never played them. Nobody I knew played them. Everyone played and enjoyed the free mode where you just build your own city and wait till you get to the highest age. Once you had it all built, everything evolved to the max and the enemy defeated there wasn't really much else to do... I replayed it a few times but then I lost interest. As I said the campaigns weren't as fun so those lost my interest really fast.
Soldier of anarchy - I bet if I was a RTS fan I would love this game. It's surely an underrated gem, and that is saying something from someone who doesn't play RTS. Not sure if anyone here knows this game but it's set in a post-apocalyptic world. An army group was cut off from civilization and only after years decided to check out what happened to the rest of the world.
You don't control an army of nameless mooks. Each character has it's own name and story and you get to meet more people that will join you. The story is pretty good...I wish I was able to get further.
This game is HARD! You have to carefully plan each and every move. I needed more than 3 hours to beat the first mission. I strongly recommend it for RTS fans though.

Simulators- I mostly mean those like flight simulator/train simulator/truck simulator. Where you drive a vehicle like in real life. Video games are escapism to me, I don't want to be reminded of real life!
My dad loves these games though.
I've played Sims and Sims 2. I've enjoyed it but the fun didn't last long. I stopped played it when I realised that I'm playing a simulation of everyday life...

EDIT: It looks like that besides MMOs I've played a game from each genre I don't like...
There are very different kinds of WRPGs. Try playing a Bioware one, like KOTOR or Mass Effect. Jade Empire is amazing for beginners. Those are more story-focused, and less focused on big worlds full of nothing.

Every single FPS you have mentioned is NOT a horror game. At all. Horror games are stuff like Silent Hill, Project Zero or Amnesia.

And there are lots more RTS-type games. Warcraft 3 is great for beginners.

In terms of simulators, none of those really remind you of real life. Mostly because simulators are means to simulate situations where you'd never be in real life, in absolutely amazing environments and in great situations. Want to relax? Try a virtual sailing game. Want to feel a bit of freedom? Try a flight simulator. Those can be absolutely amazing, you feel incredibly free and relaxed trying out a game with no strict objectives, just trying out stuff in an awesome way.

And if you want to try MMOs, here:

A Zelda-like RPG that runs on pretty much any computer.
