Yeah.... it was bad. But hey, this is the What Are You Thinking Now? thread...
Yep. And I'm sorry to LMGTFY you, but I think asking on a thread for a news headline expected to be seen on several websites is one of those cases in which is necessary. =P

Flash: One of those is an over the top deliberate inversion; the others are still attractive in their own merit on multiple levels, even if they contain themselves compared to say, Team Ninja's regular work. And that's just the thing, any character design will still be made in a way that is pleasing to the viewer. This applies to women AND men alike. We just need to accept a certain level of idealization and sexualization characteristic of visual media. We should be able to judge a character beyond looks. That is after all also what we have to do in reality; you don't choose to look the way you do.
You said sexualized and idealized. None of these are either. There's a difference between someone that looks sexual and someone that looks "okay" to viewers. None of them are idealized, and they all commit several mistakes along their way. They all struggle through things and act in a completely human way. Which one is even the over the top deliberate inversion?

I'm thinking you have no idea what the hell you're even saying.

I hate FPS games. I hate not being bale to see my character walking about, falling off that cliff I didn't see behind me, etc. I don't really take too well to extreme realism either.

Despite this I lept out of my element and purchased a generic American war shooter; Bad Company 2

Despite my reservations, the gameplay was pretty tight. It took a little getting use to, but once I did, I was really in the zone. I felt like a soldier in a war. Creeping around corners, sneaking up on people, having fire fights, all while trying not to get shot up.

A game I thought I would completely hate, or be frustrated/bored with, I ended up liking a great deal. Go figure.

Sorry, no real in depth review, photos, or whatever but there ya go.
Hey, I used to hate FPS games too. The controls, the way the camera was positioned, the way the guns worked...

Then one day I got one, and loved it. Now you just need to get some more. Heck, Bad Company 2 isn't even a really great game as FPSes come.

You're just getting the same kind of experience I mean for people to get in here, and open their horizons to games they hate without having even played.

I think there's two problems with the premise of a good, strong, independent, non-sexualized heroines, and even heroes. First, all (main) characters are fiction are idealized and sexualized. Secondly, too much strength and independence ultimately leads to one-dimensionality. Characters aren't supposed to be perfect with only strength and no weakness, nor are they supposed to be so independent they have no social and emotional interaction whatsoever. Samus was that kind of one-dimensional character, until they flipped her around a little too far to the other side. Now is the time to find balance between both depictions.

Sexualized, huh? Idealized, huh?

To be honest, I can't really remember a good, strong, independent and non-sexualized game heroine made in Japan. Aside from the usual weeaboo RPG thingers which are usually horrible written.

3DS supports some level of stats on your friends including what game they're playing, IIRC.

Do you have any idea of how far online gaming has evolved when it comes to consoles? Heck, even with platforms like Steam. We have real-time chat, no matter what game we're playing. We can send each other messages which can be seen anytime, not just through the main menus. We know which games have been finished and which ones haven't, out of all our contacts. You wanna play with someone? Give'em your gamertag, or PSN ID. Contact people with similar interests as you, and choose different difficulty areas. Have heavily involved matchmaking and complex multiplayer lobbies. Launch another completely different game while you're playing something else, by simply accepting another person's multiplayer invite. And this is just the cherry on top of the hundred-layer cake that online multiplayer is, both on XBox Live or PSN.

Quote
And as a latecomer to PSN I must disagree with the notion that identifying one's account via random code is without merit.  Because see, if you identify by username, it means that if ANYONE ELSE IN THE WHOLE FREAKING WORLD had the same idea as you, ever, you have to either pick something else or attach random [parasitic bomb] to the end.  I hate that.  I'd rather the system identify me by a random number and my name appear to players as whatever the hell I want, regardless of originality.
Hahahahaha! So, for the sake of keeping your favoured identity because you can't think of something original, you forego easy access to everyone and choose to let other players you know reach you through one of the worst net identity ideas I've ever seen, as if you're keeping some kind of long phone number you can be contacted with.

"Oh man, you play Halo? Awesome! My Gamertag is DrGamma, look for me there."

"Oh man, you play Mario Kart? Great! We should... play online sometime. I'll just... give you my e-mail, so we can log in and trade numbers, because I don't carry mine with me. But we'll meet up! Sometime..."

Gamertags and PSN IDs make it so trading identities is like trading e-mails. You're foregoing pretty much everything just for the sake of still having your own name to be identified by in matches. Matches with people you know, because obviously people you don't know will see a code or some [parasitic bomb].

Quote
One man's paint is another's [parasitic bomb], it seems.  Because to me, leaderboards, mean nothing.  I see no value to them whatsoever and I in no way believe that Mario Kart, Mega Man, or any other such game is better for them.  The taunts provide some manner of personality.  Leaderboards just show who has the most time to kill.  To me, the earlier is a far superior aspect of "identity" than the latter.
Nintendo's got a lot about their online setup that they could stand to fix, but stat-tracking some anonymous weirdos on the internet isn't one that interests me personally.  It never did.  If I want to know how awesome my friends are, I'll ask.  And if I don't know who they are, then I don't really give a damn.  And even if for the sake of argument I did, that's why we have YouTube.

That reminds me of that Aesop. Fox and the Grapes.

You don't like a feature. That's cool. What the [tornado fang] does that have to do with our present argument? Nothing whatsoever. Nintendo's online setup is still [parasitic bomb]. And Leaderboards and social options are worshipped by alot of online players.

There's no snaking in Wii.  That's why we have, and despise, bikes. -_-
Because snaking makes the game SO MUCH FUN.

Strangers Wrath is the one that definitely appeals the most to me, honestly. But I figure if I'm gonna do that, I may as well play them in some sort of order, right?
Stranger's Wrath is a completely different story within the Oddworld. Different gameplay, too. Just play that one, trust me.

And I'm saying the end result was nowhere near as bad as you make it out to be. It's something you're supposed to overlook for gameplay reasons alone.
Because we're supposed to overlook horrible [parasitic bomb] in games, right?

Quote
And by building up what the preceding Metroids introduced, and Fusion demands it lead to, the many plot points you complained about in Other M came into existence. If it didn't, it'd be even less classic Metroid than it already is.
And it came out as one of the worst stories I've ever seen in an AAA game. Gears of War has a deeper and more touching story than this.

Quote
The very fact that Samus is touched on a deeper level by its desire to protect its mother, despite her being the one that slaughtered the baby's true family, the other Metroids. Again, you're dealing with the very premises set by the older Metroid titles, the reason why she spared it at the end of Metroid II.
We have no [tornado fang]ing idea why she spared it in Metroid 2. Nor do we have any kind of connection with her feelings in the other Metroids. I'm saying this game is awful, and the story is absolutely damn horrible, making no sense at all from any kind of standpoint.

The japanese man whose name I cannot remember who wrote this imagined Samus as a woman who lost her entire badass nature and independence when confronted with an incompetent "superior" whose worth is banged over our heads. [parasitic bomb]'s awful.

So what's the problem then? All they'd have to do would be to make certain Miis unuseable in certain games.

...instead of making Miis unuseable in their own home console.

Swap Magic IS the best way to go with PS2 games. In terms of PS1 games, I actually think a modded PS1 is pretty easy to find and buy. I bought mine for 30 bucks.

Samus let herself go through it, she didn't whine about it. And with save stations all around, neither should you. Meanwhile, Adam made perfectly clear he didn't want her exploring the area beyond her current equipment, including Varia Suit. As in, you were not supposed to stay in the heat zone for any prolonged period of time. Which is why he authorized it only when there was no way back.
It is [tornado fang]ing stupid in story terms, and you know it. Varia Suits never hurt anyone, and a protective armor should be allowed at all times. It makes perfect sense from a gameplay stucture standpoint, but it makes absolutely no sense within the story.

Quote
You're admitting here that Other M was ultimately limited to the very clichés its predecessors set; you're complaining about all of Metroid. Which just comes to show why you're also moaning about the very premises set by Metroid II and III.
The first Metroids didn't hit you over the head with the story. That's my very point. Other than a basic reason to complete a mission, you have no story in the other Metroids. In this one, however, you do, and the game's central thing is its story, going as far as to have the option to watch the cutscenes after you played the game.

Quote
I was not aware Anthony considered Samus his mother.
The [tornado fang] does that have to do with it? That is the stupidest reasoning I've ever seen. It was sacrificing one's life to save Samus'. The fact that an irrational creature thought of her as close for a few hours should not matter at all.

Sorry to say this, but doesn't this belong in the emulation section? Would somebody please move it?

Well, except grindfests. So, anything from Disgaea.

Hmmm. Should give those 2 (Halo CE and NBA Jam) a try. I'm not going to count Burnout 3 'cause if it's anything like the other burnouts...I'm just going to love it. On of the few real life/realictic (and I use that term lightly) racing games I like. Crashing and causing mayhem is fun.

So, Halo CE, what are the minimum requirements to play it? And do you have more suggestions for games of my least favorite genres to check out?
Burnout is the least realistic racing game there is. =P And yes, counting F-Zero and Wipeout. XD

Anyway, as long as your PC isn't more than 8 to 10 years old, you should be able to play it.

Quote
# Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows XP.
# Computer/Processor: 733 megahertz (MHz) processor.
# DirectX: DirectX® 9.0 or later. (DirectX 9.0b is installed by Halo.)
# Memory: 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM.
# Hard Disk: 1.2 gigabytes (GB) of free hard disk space.
# Video card: 32 MB with 3D Transform and Lighting capable.
# CD: 8X.
# Sound: Sound card, speakers, or headphones with multiplayer play.

It's seriously peanuts. Anyway, let's see...

For simulators, the Ace Combat games are fun. Hard to get into, but fun. Ace Combat Zero was the best, in my opinion, although it's certainly not an entry-level game. Gran Turismo 4 is a very cool, very fun racing game with tons of detail, but it's more for the sheer amount of cars you can unlock and the different ways they handle. The Microsoft Flight Simulator series is also pretty damn awesome.

For FPS games, there are a TON of them. Timesplitters is the best PS2 series. And one of the greatest FPS games of all time, with really smooth controls and graphics that still look great today. Black is also a great example, although it's more for prettiness than gameplay. Most FPSes in that generation were on the XBox, so there's not alot to pick. I'm having one hell of an experience with Wii's Goldeneye, so I'd recomend that one as well.

For sports games, there are quite a few amazing ones that are loved by even the most hardcore of games. Virtua Tennis, for example, is an arcade sensation and a fantastic game. The Tiger Woods games are also pretty good, if you're into golf.

I think for me, a top 10 list would be easier(#1 is favorite genre):

#1 RPGs
#2 Platformers
#3 Fighting (also includes Beat em'up)
#4 Shooters (Light Gun is favorite sub-genre, though I haven't really explored many shmups)
#5 Survival-Horror
#6 Puzzle
#7 Strategy
#8 Racing (or any vehicle simulation)
#9 Music
#10 Sports

I don't recall playing any light novel games before.
I see Music as one of the least-liked genres there. Meaning, I'm gonna suggest Gitaroo Man, Vib Ribbon or Audiosurf.

It might also depend on your graphic card, since Dolphin puts much into it, from what i've read.
Hmmm... so it seems I'm in a better situation than you, since I can run wii games such as SONIC COLORS, Tales of Graces and few others I tried.
The problem always starts though when I try to make dat [parasitic bomb] HD.
Oh well, I can live without it.

Laptops aren't too good for those kinds of emulation, that's why I never wanted a laptop, no matter how much my father wanted to persuade me when my old pc died.
Though he's overall bad at choosing technology for himself. I mean, it took like, 6 or 5 cellphones for him to get one that finally satifies him. : /
I can run them all beautifully. They're just kinda slow. Heck, I've played a whole zone of Colors today.

I honestly chose a laptop because I need to work here too, and I don't really have a single desk job.

EDIT: Aparently, I can run Colors full speed as well. Just not 1080p, but it's pretty cool on 720p.

Is it too late for me to join the experiment?

Games I enjoy:

-Platformers [Such as Mario, Kirby, Mega Man. Ghost & Goblings (just played the SNES and Genesis games), Klonoa (didn't like the GBA games much though) and Sonic (?) (I'll admit I am not that fond of the first game, I've tried to like it, many times. But I just can't seem to like the game). Other Platformers I had or played were I-Ninja, and some early Spyro games]

-JRPGs [I'll admit I have a love/hate relationship with JRPGs, the ones I really like are the Breath of Fire series, Dragon Quest (just played VIII, IX, IV DS in that order, one or two Final Fantasy games...though I'll admit I haven't really finished any of them. Always stopped playing them in the end dungeon. Can't forget about Chrono Trigger. Also the Mario RPGs and I recently got back to playing Pokemon.]

-Action JRPGs [Tales of Symphonia, only 'Tales of' game I've ever played though. Kingdom Hearts (though I got bored of the serious after Re Chain of Memories) Vanilla ware's games, aka. Odin Sphere and Muramasa, love to get my hands on Princess...something-or-other.]

-Action [Devil May Cry 1 and 3, God of War 1 (Though I did find some of the fights a bit repetitive, good game though), Gunstar Heroes (both the original and the admittedly inferior GBA remake/sequel, Viewtiful Joe games, Ratchet and Clank (Only played the first game though, and it was lent to me by a friend), Ape Escape (just played 1 and 3), Mad World and No More Heroes]

-Action Adventure [TLoZ franchise, Beyond Good and Evil, Okami]

-Music based games [DDR, Gitaroo Man]

-Fighting [Street Fighter series, Samurai Showdown, Super Smash Bros., vs Capcom games, Soul Caliber]

-SRPGs [Fire Emblem, Disgaea and the like]

-Games whose Genre I can't quite assign [Pikmin, Drill Dozer, Punch Out games, Dragon Quest Swords, Custom Robo games, One Piece Mansion (not related in any way to the manga/anime about the wacky pirate gang whom I adore).]

Games I'm not that intrested in/weary of playing:

-Simulators [Much like the ones Flash mentioned. Sims was fun for a while but it got boring for me.]

-Sports game [Shocker, ain't it. Though I have to say, the times I did get my hands on one of these types of games, whether it was through the PS demo CD or playing multiplayer at a friends house, I was kinda enjoy it. But I was never really that interested enough to go out and buy one for myself.]

-RTS [more weary than not interested]

-FPS [same reason as sports. Or course I felt a bit bored when I played Halo 2 in one of my relatives homes. Not so much the case with CoD 4, though I was only able to play the tutorial, a bit of the first level. Most of the time was spent playing in split screen mutliplayer. Only FPS game I had bought would be Red Steel 2, which I rather enjoyed actually.]

Consoles I Have:

-Wii
-PS2
-DS
-PC [Can only play roms, and some downloadable games. Haven't really tried playing a retail PC game, though I doubt my comp will be able to play a current gen game. And I don't have the money to upgrade...heck I barely even have enough money for new games.]
Never too late to join the experiment. I actually typed up a huge reply here explaining every great game in detail, but accidentally closed the window. So now I'm just gonna list them.

- Halo CE (great game, runs on old PCs and it has an amazing campaign)
- Burnout 3 (probably the popular choice, but it's a cheap PS2 game and it provides you with hours of fun. Think of it as Mario Kart, but ten times faster and more destructive)
- NBA Jam (game focused on fun, fun fun! Arcadey with tons of cheap memes which people here would repeat endlessly if they played it =P)

One small suggestion for everyone in the topic. The Tony Hawk's pro Skater series (from 1 to 4) has amazing gameplay which consists of racking up combos with amazing neverending tricks, pretty much exactly to the point that many fighting games and japanese action games turn out to be. I widely recomend it. It can be absolutely amazing. You can create your own character with a ton of options, even build your own levels and you have tons of levelling up options as well as fantastic gameplay.

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bh1FiDQPD7o[/youtube]

It's like a platformer where you combo into things. It's brutally awesome.

Hey, Flash! Do you have a quad or core2duo?
Because I have core2duo and some of the [tornado fang]ing games lag like hell when I put them through "HD" treatment.
FFFFF...
In fact, most of them... even when I'm not HD'ing them.
Also,
3GB RAM and 2.93 processor, and as mentioned, core2duo. HALP!
Intel® Core™ i5-450M Processor. I think it's dual. It's a laptop, I got it awhile ago on sale.

Wii games, just forget it, aside from stuff like Kirby Epic Yarn.

Gamecube games, a few run well. I've been able to run Wind Waker and Mario Sunshine at full speed, as long as I keep a small window.

I honestly think it's more of an emulator issue than PC issue.

Icons and textures look terrible. that I can tell from just playing on the Wii.

You know the title screen? Sonic and Friends have horrible Color banding issues.

Oh, and Jaggies everywhere. Don't see how Jagged Polygons and next gen graphics are always together. (Granted Sonic Heroes is last gen, but I mean in games nowadays too.) Why doesn't anybody [tornado fang]ing Smooth that [parasitic bomb] out?
Hey, the game itself has always looked bad. I mean, it's post-Sega-console Sonic. I've had stuff like Sunshine and Wind Waker run on Dolphin, and they look awesome. I'll take some screenshots of them right now.

EDIT: Here's Wind Waker.

Well, I've tried playing Sonic Heroes, and out of all of the games I've tried, this one gives me incredibly awful texture errors.

Still, I found a pic of it running on Dolphin.

Pretty good, but icons and stuff are predictably awful-looking.

Looks like my EMulator can't play Resi 3 for some reason..oh well. Atleast I had a back up plan:
Star Wars-Knights of the old republic
Well, my first WRPG in years...I can compare it to the JRPG entry I'm doing at the same time: Persona 2 Innocent sin.
And let us pick our main character...wow. They really tried their best to make the choices as bland as possible. Well, I chose the female fighter class. Well then so far the graphics remind me on the Jedi knights games...remind me to play those after I'm done with this.
Everything's controlable with the mouse?..gotta get used to it just as I have to get used to the battles.
You walk and can have keyboard controls. The mouse is easier to select attacks and such. If you find the battles too hard, set it in an easier setting, the game itself is all about the choices and story.

Anyway, played the first two missions of Goldeneye 007. So far? Absolutely brilliant. An awesome setup that makes you feel like a professional, it's cinematic enough to feel absolutely awesome, but gives you total control otherwise. I'll have to check sometime if the original game was this cinematic. The enemies seem smart enough, although I do have to complain about the hitboxes, they're too forgiving at times, and too strict at other times. But the level design is amazing, nothing feels linear to the point of feeling like a videogame level. If this is the first well-made console FPS, I'll have to say, well done, Rare.
