I finally get to go to the store and pick them up today.

I had no doubt that Batman #1 was going to be awesome, cause Snyder is easily one of the best things DC has going for it right now. I was hoping Wonder Woman would be good, cause I love yelling out WONDER WOMAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN like the old TV show song!
What I love the most about the new Batman, is that Snyder isn't being his usual crime dude thing man. In Detective Comics, he did Detective Stories. In here, he actually does BATMAN. Doing what Batman does best.

The Beyond Universe is currently being given quite alot of attention, and alot of love with that recent comic series, the one-shot stories, the integration of a separate Beyond-like continuity in the normal DC Universe with Damian mentoring Terry McGinnis...

We're gonna see more of it, guaranteed.

Also, Bats #1 and Wondy #1 ruled. Wondy specially is the best thing I've ever seen her be the main character of. If it keeps on being as good, it'll be the best Wonder Woman run there is, and we'll finally have amazing Wondy books to speak of.

To be honest, I can't imagine a Marvel x KH crossover working out.

But that Spider-man and Disney comparison that Mirby made has me intrigued. It definitely could fit well.
Yep. Disney's much, much more than just movies. As stuff opens in the way of more fan-loved and reasonably unknown (at the time) stuff like Tron, and more recent stuff like Chicken Little (not to mention already having stuff from a direct-to-video sequel), it could definetly fit in properties like Duck Tales and Gargoyles. And things happen in ridiculous, mysterious ways. If Disney sees the amount of success and moolah that Capcom is making with the MvsC franchise, why not allow a few more crossovers? For money's sake, since Marvel can go child-friendly when it wants to.

... Nomura also won't allow Marvel in. Trust me, there's no way in hell that Marvel is gonna make it into KH; it was founded on using strictly Disney's original properties, and that's not gonna change anytime soon. You can dream all you want, but it won't happen in a million years.
Why wouldn't he? Japanese people love Marvel. And what is an "original property"? Disney has thousands upon thousands of original properties, some quite unknown, and some not directly Disney. Like Nightmare Before Christmas, which was released under the Touchstone Pictures banner, only recently switching back to Disney. Heck, Kill Bill is an original Disney property, the company certainly created it.

So Nomura notwithstanding, since he's the head honcho of the series but the big heads in the company have the final word, in a time when the Marvel movies are coming out in quite alot of popularity, and a time when a rival company game has quite a bit of success with a Marvel crossover, what's stopping Square from requesting to use Marvel in KH? Even better, what's stopping Disney from saying they can use the Avengers movie properties, making the game yet another very successful tie-in? Money talks. And Disney does stuff for money nowadays.

Mega Man is in the unfortunate position of being among the lowest regarded by Capcom in terms of new games, but at the same time ranking in among their strongest not only in merchandise, but in back catalog.  Even setting aside the usual Japanese/corporate control pride that would likely forbid the idea anyway, they will not sell him off, even if they can't be assed to do anything with him.

How many other third-party re-releases could dethrone Link's Awakening DX?

Saber's Sonic analogy hit a bit closer to home than I'd like to admit.

The "rights" are not going anywhere, for sure.  What Capcom needs to do, I think, is to collaborate with another developer to dampen the risk to themselves.  If nobody within the company can throw adequate weight behind Mega Man, then a business partner such as CyberConnect2 would be the way to go.

That, and we need to bang Nintendo's door down to get Mega Man into the next Smash Bros.  Smash brought Fire Emblem to the west, and it revived Kid Icarus.  It could go a long ways towards helping Mega Man.
They're basically living off the rights and merchandise, which is a typical strategy for them. Doubt they'll do anything with the property itself soon, but maybe someone within the company will grow a backbone. Maybe after Cyber Connect 2 wraps up Asura's Wrath, they'll ask if they can do something with Legends 3, and they'll work something out.

The Sonic analogy isn't really working IMO, because although Sega didn't know what to do with him for years, they certainly kept trying for new ways to do something. Ten bad years of games also adds to ten years of trying something new, trying new control schemes, main characters, art style, team redefinitions, staff, gameplay, level design... they recently settled on the Unleashed/Colors/Generations scheme, probably because they've sunk in enough cash into the Hedgehog Engine. Let's hope that doesn't lower the bar anytime soon. Sega KNOWS Sonic is a very important franchise for them, and they want to sink in enough money to make it work, not just as something that sells to the fans anyway because they know they'll buy it. But they don't want to be shown as a company that stops caring. Their PR is quite good, and they've shown they listen to fans with stuff like the Yakuza translation thing which went badly with 3 and was fixed with 4.  Yakuza might be their main franchise in Japan, but Sonic's their main franchise in the world, and they do care about it. They want to make it relevant to everyone again.

Or maybe a replacement for the Gold Mushroom? But Coin jackpot does make the most sense.

Also, am I the only one who thinks a story mode in this game, or any Mario Kart game, would be interesting? Just a little fun, wacky plotline with a one-on-one race with Bowser at the end (or a really hard 8-player 150cc race?)

Story, event mode, challenge mode, story quest with field (like in CTR), anything. Just as long as they make the single player mode worth it.

I got a hold of Green Lantern Corps 1, and Supergirl 1. Place was out of GL 1 though.

I really like the new Super Girl Suit. I really like it. The haircut is cool too. Reminds me of Power Girl.

Say, with the New 52 and all that, does that mean previous things like the Batman Beyond comics are canceled? And I assume we wont be seeing a Superman Beyond #1.

On another note, I also bought Batman Beyond #1 and Superman Beyond #0. (I read SB, but I liked it, so I figured id buy it)
GL books act as if nothing about the reboot happened. I like that.

Also, Beyond Universe stays where it is, but I think the Beyond comic is cancelled for now. Thank God though, they put Adam Beechen in charge, and he was kinda ruining it.

« on: September 22, 2011, 12:29:16 AM »
With The Witcher 2, one of the most glorious RPGs ever made, coming to the 360 soon, I thought of opening a thread on the series.

Here's a screenshot of the leaked 360 version.

Doesn't look as good as the glorious PC version, but for a game that has currently the best graphics on the market, it looks REALLY good. Anybody played this series? The first one's a bit aged, but still quite awesome. The second one is just ultimately brilliant. They've concocted a town AI behavior of the likes of which I've only seen in Shenmue and a few others, every single thing in the game looks amazing, the enemies are smart and will kill you if you're not extra careful, you can set up traps and the monsters move vividly and fantastically like real wild things, and the plot of the game is quite good, with quality dialogue and tons of stuff in it, including getting drunk and waking up in the next morning with all the villagers recognizing you as someone who tried to cross the river mounting a prostitute.

Here are a few screenshots.

It is. You wouldn't want Mickey to appear in the latest issue of X-Men, would you?
I would. Specially in the direction the latest issue of X-Men took.

Same goes for Spidey appearing in a short starring Donald and Daisy.
YES, I would. So very much. He'd actually fit in.

Just examples here.

Also, Disney has also said the properties won't be mixed.
Only until it's useful in a money-making point of view. Trust me, the moment is does become useful, you're gonna be seeing a crossover.

That'd be pretty cool. Hmmmm, but what would do that as a Mario Item? Maybe a pipe!
Pipes, Piantas throwing your kart forward into either shortcuts or the water, that boot thing, launch stars, skateable koopa shells like in Mario 64... It could even be Mario using the fire flower as a fire propelling way to move the kart forward if you use the item backwards.

Not only that, why not have actual Koopa Troopas walk around the stage and if you run into them, you kick their shells forward like an item? Or hell, have item blocks around too, instead of just items. Imagine drifting close to a row of them could earn you a few coins/items.

Maybe Capcom doesn't think it would be spiteful enough. Why wash your hands of something when you can bury it entirely and ensure no one else can use it?

...seriously, I dunno why. If they ever sell the rights, and Comcept can't afford them, then I at least hope the new company will be one that'll listen to Mr. Inafune.
Thing is, Capcom isn't just a gigantic rage machine that throws away a lucrative thing out of spite. They probably keep it in order to SOME DAY use it again. Problem is, they're in no condition to be using it for quite some time, and aside from that, they could easily make quite some money by selling it to anyone who gives a crap.

I've always heard so many artists say that Copic markers are mostly a marketing scheme by other artists. I'm not an expert and haven't painted a decent thing in my whole life, but they felt like regular markers the one time I used them. Plus, there's more than enough knockoffs around.

Only thing that could make this better would be Super Circuit Red Shells.  You know, the ones that act like stationary homing missiles when you toss them backward?  8D
Why'd they remove that? That was brilliant.

Also, am I the only one who'd love to see some kinda vehicle-stealing mechanic mid-track? To steal some poor NPC's wheels or propelling item, of course, and then let go when it runs out in a few seconds.

Game franchises do not carry the same level of redundancy as movie franchises.  A movie exists solely to tell a story, all other aspects a means to that end.  You finish a story, all is finished unless led to believe otherwise.  Not so with games.  Games are about interaction, and interaction, unlike story-telling, inherently begs the question of what can be done better.  Further, a franchise does not necessarily dictate the type of interaction.  Games like Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Kirby: Mass Attack are sequels, but as games, they are anything but unoriginal.

It's not as if Nintendo doesn't work with new franchises, either.  Between the DS and Wii, they've published Endless Ocean, Disaster: Day of Crisis, Pandora's Tower, Another Code, Hotel Dusk, Nintendogs, Brain Age, The Last Story, Xenoblade, A Kappa's Trail, Wii Sports, and Steel Diver.  But in terms of public perception, all of that is going up against arguably the most powerful and memorable back catalog in the industry.
It honestly isn't like that. A movie doesn't solely exist to tell a single story. Nowadays, characters have become franchises, and everything, from 80s shows, board games and old movies are getting remade into new Hollywood. Now, things have become about special effects, about showing off acting, about beautiful sceneries, about so much more than simply "tell a story". A cinematographic narrative isn't something straight and to the point, it's so much more complex than you're making it out to be. But games nowadays have BECOME an industry like Hollywood. With sequels being the only things on the shelf, and new things being far and few in between. Engines and different types of gameplay were rampant in the past, with everyone experimenting to see how they could become the next big thing. Nowadays, people just FOLLOW the big thing, trying to sell it. And yes, while I recognize that new kinds of gameplay are experimented with in the same old franchises, they just aren't willing to create something new for the people. And that's what scares me. They're willing to publish things, but not to make something themselves, as if their imagination has just stagnated.

Quote
Back to topic, Protodude's Rockman Corner posted some more recent comments from Inafune about Legends 3.

It's mostly confirming what we could have guessed: That Inafune was literally fighting against Capcom to get the game started, that he knows the development staff was passionate, that he was hoping they could keep fighting without him, but that he's not sure that anyone has the nerve to stand up and be the point-man."

Basically the "father of MegaMan (guy who made the pre-existing NES sprites into character art)" is saying that the franchise needs a new figurehead.  Here's hoping.
Kinda begs the question as to why Megaman isn't just SOLD OFF, while he's still relevant. Capcom obviously doesn't want it. Why not do it like Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, and sell it to someone else in exchange for some other franchise? They have no idea what to do with Megaman, and although they can still make money off merchandise, every year without new games is a year in which the franchise becomes more and more irrelevant to non-fans. Not only that, the franchise could have amazing results in the hands of any other company.

...I keep thinking there is ONE GUY at Nintendo of America who thinks Kirby must be sold as a badass action hero, and nothing else. This can't all just be a funny coincidence. Heck, maybe they're carrying it on as a joke.

Although Kirby IS a Lovecraftian beast who subjugates smaller nonharmful races to its enormous appetite and brings angryfaced monarchs back into their thrones, so he's probably got something there.

Well, Riku's status had been unknown to Sora for a long time, whilst Kairi was safe at home (for the most part); I could see why Sora would've been more worried about Riku.
He knew nothing about either of them, and him and Riku were fighting awhile ago, while he had feelings for Kairi. Meeting her in KH2 was all a bit "Hey... what's up?" while he shoulda manned up and make her see what being a love interest is all about.

Is it just me, or do most japanese game protagonists don't know how to give their love interests some sugar?

Add on the fact that they've been friends probably since birth (I mean, Kairi didn't come to the islands until later; Sora and Riku have lived there for their entire lives)...

Posted on: September 21, 2011, 06:07:49 AM
About the story
  • Nomura drew the illustration featured at the TGS booth in a hurry. He drew the Dream Eaters that would be your companions.
  • Nomura drew the new outfits according to how the Osaka team wished. They’re like their older outfits with minor changes.
  • They are versions between KH1 and KH2, which become the outfits for this title.
  • Riku’s hair grew during the time he was away to show the passage of time, now his hair is cut immediately after that.
  • The “World Submerged in Sleep” is a complex story, but there were worlds other than those that Sora restored in KH1, some that were not submerged in darkness. Like the worlds of the princesses and Dumbo’s, etc. In the end of KH1 it was established that some of those worlds were restored, but not all of them. Those that were neither in light nor in darkness, but those that were submerged in sleep.
  • Since those worlds are essential asleep, the dreams of those worlds become the setting.
  • Sora and Riku will travel to those worlds to awaken them from their sleep.
  • When a world is awoken from it’s sleep, it will be restored to it’s original form.
  • This title involves taking an exam in order to qualify for the Mark of Mastery, so it’ll also be concerned with events that took place in BBS.
  • All the Disney worlds appearing wil be new, and there will be new areas in existing worlds.
  • Temporarily taking on their KH1 forms, they’ll enter into the worlds of sleep . Additionally, Yen Sid says that in order to become a Master, the self taught way that they use the Keyblade will be reset and that it is necessary they learn how to use the Keyblade appropriately from the beginning. When they request to take the exam, Sora says he doesn’t need it, but since Riku has been overwhelmed by darkness before he doesn’t have the self-confidence. Also, Sora and Riku will be taking it together.
  • The opening of this title will be in Xehanort’s point of view. Additionally, there will be a surprise unlike anything seen before in the last scene.
About Dream Eaters
  • The Dream Eaters do not approach anyone and consume dreams in the World of Sleep where there are no Heartless. If Sora/Riku don’t use the power of the Dream Eaters, they can’t go to the other worlds.
  • Their abilities too are related to the Dream Eaters.
  • The Dream Eaters were designed not to be traditionally cute, but to have charm that couldn’t be disliked.  Wonder Cat was drawn to share that idea.
  • The mark of the Dream Eaters started with a heart as the base and the image of tremors. Nightmares have that sort of bad feeling.
  • The mark above your own Dream Eaters shows your ownership, it’s also displayed on the map. The boss fights are elaborated in a different direction, where you’ll have to use the map’s characteristics to your advantage. For instance, the floor will break out from under you and the field area will expand. Using the map, you’ll be able to identify your location quickly in that sort of situation.
  • The color scheme is new this time; it’s more pastel unlike what we’ve done before. However, you’ll be able to change the colors of your companion Dream Eaters.
  • The leveling up of the Dream Eaters is directly related to the growth of Sora and Riku. So far we’ve only seen 2 at a time in battle, but if you give it your all you’ll be able collect all the types.
  • Nomura isn’t quite sure off the top of his head, but there are dozens of Dream Eater types.
About Neku
  • Neku’s appearance in Traverse Town was by special means that have to do with his reason for being there. He’ll show up in District 1, etc.
  • Beginning in Traverse Town as usual you’ll meet your party member, but since I wanted to put in a fresh character, we put in Neku from The World Ends With You.
  • This time Traverse Town is constructed around the reason that Neku and co. have come. He has been separated from his original partner Shiki.
  • We’ll go into more detail about Shiki and the others in a follow up report.
  • Concerning a sequel to The World Ends With You, there may be something going on.
Reality Shift Ability
  • The Reality Shift ability in Traverse Town has Sora sink to the bottom screen where he can aim at the enemies. It’s different in each world, and Riku’s ability is different too. In Riku’s Reality Shift you can touch the bottom screen to connect enemies and objects in a line creating chain that Riku will attack following along on the upper screen.
  • The way Sora and Riku interact with their companion Dream Eaters is different. Sora can ride atop the Dream Eaters and be thrown off, while they serve as power ups to Riku.
  • Like shown in the TGS demo, Sora can have two companions at the same time and use them both to do the Dual Link ability where the two Dream Eaters combine into one big Wonder Cat. Filling up the gauge, you’ll be able to use the Reality Shift and Dual Link abilities successively.
  • Since the concept of the game was bold action, this title really makes use of the Free Flow Action ability. Though you have a lot of battle options, with this alone you can do many actions like spinning around and jump kicking depending on the terrain.

Source
Naice. Nice party replacements, and certainly much more controllable than Donald and Goofy were. And I'm loving the way the story actively HAPPENS, and isn't just a dream. They go into worlds, save the hell outta them, and earn their marks of mastery. Sounds simple enough. And not just that, NEW worlds. No overused Agrabah, but [tornado fang] yeah Notre Dame. I'm hoping to see some Toy Story or maybe even Marvel there.
