Gaming / Re: Castlevania

I'm surprised at the amount of people suggesting the first Castlevania games for a non-Castlevania player. Isn't the whole meaning of introducing someone to a series to be to ease them in instead of surrounding with crushing difficulty for the sake of watching either evolving gameplay or (chuckles)... story.

The way I got into the franchise, was through Symphony of the Night. It's pretty much the perfect entry title for the series, with a decent difficulty, and gets the Metroidvania style quite well.

In terms of Lords of Shadow, I'm kinda wondering how the Kojima influence will show.

Zelda games simply need to be a bit tougher, that's all. No need for crushing difficulties, just don't make it Twilight Princess easy where pretty much every single boss is given to you on a platter.

I don't care about the story, theme and/or feel of various things NOW, is a better explanation. My apologies. What is the rule as opposed to the exception (read: What I said about Nazis and Space Nazis) is something that I'm not exactly happy with.

But that is irrelevant. Yes, you are correct, I am more often worried about the story, theme and/or feel of things these days as opposed to gameplay. Gameplay doesn't make or break a game for me; I guess that is ironic. Gameplay is more like the frosting on my much more delicious chocolate cake. The crust holding my myriad of pizza toppings.

Etc.
So you DO care about story and aseeing, but as long as it's the asian cliché as opposed to the western cliché (Typical JRPG setting with effeminate characters and medieval-like setting with magic 'n [parasitic bomb]), you don't really care about it, and gameplay is the least you care about, correct?

And now you've found the missing puzzle. That is the main factor with me. 9 to 10, I just don't care for the theme, story and/or feel of various things.
...uh... do you or do you not? So far, you said you liked classic things, I told you this game was anything but classic in gameplay. You told me that the story, theme and feel was what you were worried about. I said you were worried about that rather than the gameplay. And now you say "I just don't care for the theme, story and/or feel of various things."

...which one is it? Was that last one a typo?

No, I meant what I said. The RGG series started as a video game series. The movie adaptation by Miike came afterward.
"Video game version of a Yakuza-themed Miike film" kinda means the contrary to me, seeing as you mean the game's a "version" of a film. Unless you meant the film when you said RGG. Which, being the name of the saga, gets confusing.

Ironic that the only excellent and amazing videogame movie so far is the one nobody knows exists.

Playing the Mafia 2 demo, I have come to an amazing conclusion.

Nolan North has managed to infiltrate himself in so many games, he's become part of the world of gaming itself. All of his personalities, everywhere, all of him is spread all around us in games.

Nolan North is everyone and everyone is Nolan North.

Nolan North is life and death. Nolan North is you, me, them, everybody, everybody.

Nolan North has taken posession of the Anti-Life Equation and has become the new dark God of all there is. The all-conscience.

Uncharted wasn't a bad game, honestly. It didn't even feel like a shooter. More like Tomb Raider for real men with chest hair than anything else.

And it still LOOKS, SOUNDS and FEELS like an RPG. The visual representation is very RPG-esque. It still looks like it'll have a dynamic story that I actually give a [parasitic bomb] about. One that doesn't involve a buncha "wanna-be" hard ass soldiers with guns...

Or space guys that want to be hardass soldiers with guns. Killing aliens this time instead Nazis or Nazi ripoffs.

That said, I don't really have an arguement here thus far. You underestimate my flexibility, Flashikins. As well as my love for innovative ideas and flipping the board a bit.
Uncharted, for all the amazing acclaim it had, and all the success, would honestly be hard to call a bad game. As well as Gears and all of the great games in the genre.

So basically, your problem is with the story and theme rather than with the gameplay.

« on: August 11, 2010, 05:41:22 PM »
Wherever you go on the internet, you'll hear one of two things:

1- HIPSTER BULLSHIT BURN ALL OF IT DOWN
2- OH GOD I LOVE IT IT'S THE REBIRTH OF COMIC BOOKS

Truth is, Scott Pilgrim's a funny little comic. I, myself, didn't enjoy it IMMENSELY as at first everyone did. It's a love story with No More Heroes-styled ranking battles. Gaming references are the blatantly obvious kinds (the kind that's like "pass me the mushrooms" "OH IS THAT LIKE IN MARIO?" Seriously, it's that bad), and the story is pretty enjoyable. I love certain characters, think many can be very cool, and rest assured that both the movie and the game are AWESOME (far better than the comic even). My main problem with it, is that both the main characters are immensely unlikeable. Scott and Ramona are supposed to be rooted for, but you end up loving the rest of the cast (who actually does something other than whine about their lives and act cool) that you'll end up having a bit of hatred for those two. But Scott eventually turns into that friend of yours who's an [dark hold], the story turns into something you've invested in and you deserve to know more, and you know what? It's one of those things which, if not for a ton of blatant [tornado fang]ing publicity and "BEST THING EVER" shoved in our faces, it would have been that one cool little comic we would have found out and thought: "Wow, this is pretty cool and fun". But as it stands?

Well, Scott Pilgrim is something that would have worked better as a webcomic. It's a comic about a guy that almost seems autobiographical and "coolified" in order to give it some kinda pizazz. I didn't like the first volume, then warmed up to it, then pretty much ended up liking, but not loving it. I do expect to love the movie, and currently am totally addicted to the game, mostly because those two are made by reputable and excellent directors/developers.

My advice? Download and read all of it. It's of webcomic standards, but it's pretty good, I guess. Not for everyone. I kinda like it.

Nomura wishes he could design like that.
Yeah. Lotsa beltandzipper, but if this was Nomura's game, it'd have more leather, more colors, characters with bigger eyes and more feminine, and overall less of a cool design.

I'm seemingly reminded time and time again why I picked the Wii over those two would-be behemoths. That said, this is shaping up to be one hell of a game. While it is incredibly innovative, at least visually (in all a good way), it still keeps the feel, look and sound of a JRPG. This is good, very good. While I will always love and prefer good ol' fashion Turn-Based RPGs, it isn't bad when something like this comes up.

This looks and sounds like a genuinely wonderful RPG. It gives me a bit of hope that the genre isn't going to be swallowed up whole by all the BS out there today and the "arms race" for "new ideas" when frankly, new blood pantheons don't have to erase anything or completely make everything blotted out.

There is still room for classics, defossilization and thankfully, Nintendo and several of their tailwinds, hasn't forgotten that.
Considering this game seems to have pretty much the gameplay of current cover-based third person shooters like Uncharted and Gears, this is an extremely ironic statement. 8D

In the end, RGG does a great job of being a video game version of a Yakuza-themed Miike film.
Other way around?

And speaking of Frank Quitely, while I like his art, his people always look like they have pursed lips.  Half-lidded eyes, pursed lips, like they're either smug as hell and needing a slap across the face, or they see something that disgusts them.  He seemed to favour that pose and composition for a while, from what I remember.  I haven't seen his recent stuff, though.  He may have ditched that.
He hasn't. But I still loooooooove him. 8D

The best thing about this is that from what I've read, all it explains is the marriage. It doesn't explain why Harry is back, what happen to Peter's "Other" Spider-powers, etc.
For a man who mutilated half a comic book instead of making his own and then added crap like "bad guy falling takes out Spidey" or "bird frees villain", I'm surprised you're surprised on such a quality story. =P

No I meant... in terms of paying and fees. Unless GS2 has a revolutionairy payment system that won't charge for anything.
I dunno what GS is, but if you meant Guild Wars...

...you do know that Guild Wars is pretty much the ONE high profile MMO that never charged any fees from the start, right? =P

Funny, cause I've always loved Morrison, at least his DC work. I never read his X-Men comics.
Read them awhile ago. They're as Morrison-like as they can be.

Do read them. You won't even feel like you're reading Marvel. Plus, Frank Quitely art. And awesome multidimensionally colorful storylines like Morrison does best.

...just don't look up who Xorn is or you'll be spoiled. Comics-wise, it's pretty much as known as the "Aerith dies"  spoiler or the "Atlas is Fontaine" one.

Up until now, I think I've only disliked one Morrison comic. "How I Killed My Boyfriend". It's kinda bullshit, but I guess it's alright in an indie sort of way. The rest of his stuff, like Doom Patrol, Animal Man, The Filth, The Invisibles, We3 ande everything else is amazingly awesome.
