I've played the japanese ISO already with the patch. I'm waiting for the english version, however. If Nomura's gonna ruin the franchise for me, at least I want him to do it right.

« on: August 23, 2010, 08:51:58 PM »
So, I'm finding myself unsure of where to jump back into DC. Their [parasitic bomb] is too convoluted at times.

I'm figuring read Blackest Night then get into Brightest Day. For Batman, maybe start at.. Battle for the Cowl or just jump into the new Batman & Robin? Also, what about Gotham City Sirens?
NONONONONONONONONO.

DC continuity as of the present, must be followed through in one of two ways:

1- The Geoff Johns story, which is what's being done for Green Lantern, Flash and other DC heroes, and it follows the general DC Universe, concerning Blackest Night and Brightest Day
2- The Grant Morrison story, which takes place in the Bat-books, starting with Batman & Son, going through Final Crisis, his "death" and return, and will end with the Batman Inc series that starts this year.

They're both good stories (there's also stuff like the Superman family New Krypton storyline, and the Booster Gold/JLI stuff if you want to get into more detail) and they're pretty much THE continuity in DC at the moment, and what you need to read if you want to follow DC right now.

Lemme give you pointers on how to follow them:

Geoff Johns continuity (Blackest Night, Brightest Day...)

- Green Lantern: Rebirth
- Green Lantern Corps: Recharge
- Regular current issues of Green Lantern (V4) and Green Lantern Corps, which will take you through the Sinestro Corps War storyline, and the Prelude to Blackest Night)
- Blackest Night (along with GL and GLC tie-ins which are 100% necessary)
- Brightest Day (along with tie-ins if necessary, no idea so far which are more important, but GL will most certainly be)

The Geoff Johns storyline and continuity forms a great story, epic and anime-like in scope at times, with shiny colorful powers, a great cast of characters, and a very likeable plot. Fun for everyone.
----

The Grant Morrison Continuity:

- Batman & Son
- Batman: The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul
- Batman: The Black Glove
- Batman: RIP
- Batman: Last Rites (generally included in RIP but part of Final Crisis)
- Final Crisis (just important for Batman's death but seriously, WORTH A READ. Best damn comic in awhile)
- Battle for the Cowl (not written by Morrison and not that good, but whatever, it's in-canon)
- Batman: Reborn (Issues 687-699 written by Tony Daniel. Not really that important, but fun in their own right)
- Batman & Robin (the continuity of all the previous titles was contained in the Batman book. This expands into its own comic. Currently ongoing)
- Batman #700 (not really completely in canon yet but awesome in its own right and seriously insane)
- The Return of Bruce Wayne (again, it's his own 6-issue miniseries)
- Batman: RIP The Missing Chapter (chronicles what happened between RIP and Final Crisis, the last moments of Batman's Life. Batman #701/702)
- The Return (separate series portraying Bruce's actual return and how it influences each of the characters around him
- Batman Inc

The Grant Morrison plot is absolutely brilliant, and pretty much the best Batman has EVER been in its entire existance. But it's not for everyone. The plot pays tribute to alot of old elements, it escapes from the broody and dark streetstyle to portray Batman as the amazing mind he truly is, and readers play detective as they read it and uncover tons of elements about Bruce's past, and the entire Batman mythos in an amazing way.

I can give you clear details of how to follow each and every single one of the plots. And download links by PM if you need.

tl,dr: Don't just follow storylines haphazardly. There's a beautiful, rich storyline behind it all, and it's amazing once you know all of the elements. And doesn't take that long to go through it, really.

A sticky with just a few posts and generally updated by me and my imaginary friend Steve alone wouldn't work well. =P

Nothing like that, I just ended up finding it funny(mainly because I didn't expect to read that in a description of a Medievel setting for RPGs in general).  Sorry if that was offending, I didn't mean it like that.
None taken. It's just that people sometimes use "blood and guts" in any kind of game to classify it as juvenile and brainless. While stellar games like Diablo and Dragon Age have TONS of gore, yet it's portrayed simply because you ARE hacking and slashing things into bits. Looks good stylishly, and it's not put there just to get the same reaction Mortal Kombat had all that time ago.

Yeah. Pretty much.

Heck. Phantom Hourglass was one of the easiest Zelda games ever and it's harder than TP.
The entire difficulty of that game stemmed from the control scheme and that damn Sea King temple.

Perhaps, but then its status as First-Person Adventure would be even more dubious than it already is.

Closest thing to a true FPS Metroid would be Prime Hunters on the DS.  Of course, the DS has no analogue, but the premise of touch-aiming is similar at least, and there is no lock.
Ease of control trumps "status recognition" easily. The original Metroids didn't have any lock-on capabilities to begin with. The adventuring is what makes it adventure, not the controls. Precise aiming and moving with the lightning-quick speed existant in the 2D games would not only be possible then, it would be perfected. And then, there would be no need for lock-on controls that don't always aim at the enemies you want to. Heck, the lock-on was the one thing that didn't click with the original games.

Go play the Wii version then.  You'll be happy to know Samus can strafe just fine in that one.
Which is far better, I agree, but it sacrifices the turning speed and movement finesse that an analog could offer.

I'm gonna go ahead and orgasm at Nimoy's voice, even though it doesn't really fit the character 100%, because he's always [tornado fang]ing awesome to hear.

Double-analog control with strafing/aiming would have made Metroid Prime a pure orgasm. No need for silly lock-on by having the game choosing the enemies I want to aim at. That, and instantly looking at things I want to look at, instead of having to stop and point my ARM at them. 8D

Yes, but it's amazing how very few forms of media have works of PURE LOVE being made. Stuff that's made in a traditional, balls-to-the-wall way.

Pretty good! I did get this annoying rash which made me skip a few days, but I still got some awesome stuff done. Plus, the Marina at night is AWESOME. Both for busy loud clubbing and for smooth quiet cool bars.

The dark world in Prime 2 did seem like going through nothingness over and over, and was dull. But it fit its purpose, and they grew out of it.

Not that he usually is, now...
Since all of his latest roles (and yes, even Kingdom Hearts) have pretty much contributed nothing whatsoever to any kind of more enriching personality or playful character, and this game actually aims to bring him back to his origins and make him TRULY good and unique again, making him silent is pretty much the very best thing they could have done.

Actually it's like 2 weeks later. Why not make it yourself?
...because honestly, it would most probably fall into obscurity unless called to proper attention or expanded this topic itself for all short downloadable console games.

...yeah, point taken.

Hahahahahaha 'gushing blood' how cute.
Don't follow. Are you refering to gushing blood as being something that only appeals to childish adolescents instead of actually appreciating it as a design choice to fit the function and theme of a game?

In the simplest sense, yes.

Though it should be noted I don't care for effeminate male characters all that much to be honest. In fact, I have a general disdain for the "bishie" as it were, especially the over inflation of them.

However, the longer version is necessary here.

Note you said what you said and then I counter with my TRAP CARD. You now get to listen to my lulz and lose 4000 LPs, you also lose the ability to summon level 5 monsters or hig--- ... oh right, the long version.

See... "Typical JRPG setting with effeminate characters and medieval-like setting with magic 'n [parasitic bomb]" is a cute comment because not just JRPGs do medieval-like settings with magic 'n [parasitic bomb]. INFACT, a perfect example (besides Baulder's Gate, DnD and other things I happen to like AND own) is Elder Scrolls. For the sake of modernism, I'll pick Oblivion, my personal favorite. Oblivion has... well, last I checked (approximately 55 minutes prior to this post, in fact.) is a very medieval-esque world with magic 'n [parasitic bomb]. But hey, let us get more descriptive.

I love the story of the Elder Scrolls universe. [parasitic bomb] like Daedric Lords and crazy ass lore that is both fantastic and mind boggling in it's own right. Such things are of my intrigue. So no... it isn't just the "typical JRPG setting" that I like. Yes, I DO like that, but that doesn't eliminate all other options. Elder Scrolls, Baulder's Gate, DnD and Warhammer are examples of things that intrigue me in the highest caliber.

But hey, for those of the tl;dr persuasion, we have this:

Western cliché of medieval is very different from the japanese cliché of medieval. Just because they share elements, I've actually never seen two of them with the same "theme". Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age and Baldur's Gate have a kind of Lord of the Rings-kind of setting, while I've pretty much never seen any kind of japanese RPG with down-and-dirty kind of look and style, with regular-looking weapons and big, brown and green worlds with gushing blood.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but is there any kind of topic like this for XBLA or PSN games? I got a huge library on XBLA myself, but only about 5 Wiiware/VC titles.
Bumping this request a week later.

Warren Spector KNOWS his old-school Mickey. And I like the fact that the voice remains the same, but without actually saying anything to make it annoying. Mickey's the one cartoon character I'd like to keep silent.

To all old-school Archie Sonic fans, if you start reading the titles from 200th onwards, you'll find that the story, art and overall plot and design has SIGNIFICANTLY improved, and it's a great entry for any kind of new fans. They've successfully turned the Sonic comic GOOD.

Man, I wasn't here this week for the comic releases. What did I miss from DC?

I got into 'vania through Aria of Sorrow. Which like Non Belmont games, are usually easier because aside from leveling up, you can actually change weapons to suit your tastes, and equip stronger ones as you go along.
Another good entry title.

Darn, I always miss the big arguments where I'd be able to cause more damage. =P

Anyway, being on holiday, and having a good chance to re-try it out, I find myself replaying through Metroid Prime, this time sober.

And I gotta say, I have a BIG newfond appreciation for it. I still have the same complaints about it as always, stuff like no strafing and having to stop to point still don't make much sense, and the overly big amount of scanning you have to do could have been reduced. But I can see that Retro Studios did a work of love in this game. Enough logs to seem like a Bioware game, a damn perfect translation of the Metroid gameplay into a first-person perspective, graphics that hold up with beauty even today, and damn, this shows Nintendo had the balls to do something amazingly new and excellent without being dicks and re-releasing Metroid with Metroid gameplay and Metroid design. It's pretty much the most perfect translation of a 2D franchise into 3D I've ever seen since Ocarina of Time.

The gameplay also feels like it should. Samus runs and jumps around naturally, the Morph Ball is a dream to move around, and everything fits so well I feel kinda guilty about not giving it the full appreciation it deserved earlier.

I'm hoping Team Ninja manage this big of a splash with Other M.

The fanbase bitches because of stupid reasons like story, characters or voice acting.

...the reason the games don't get any respect is because... well, they're bad. They're playable by people who force themselves to go through the awful gameplay or stage design, but I don't give a [tornado fang] how many conspiracies people dream up for hatred on Sonic games. The games are pure and simply not up to standards with any other decent-quality games in today's gaming world. Lots of games, like the Sonic Adventure titles, still hold up quite well, and yes, the Advance and Rush titles were very good. But almost the entire rest leaves something to wish for on every single title that deems them "bad".

Problem is that neither fans nor the company can make up their minds. But right now, they seem to be going on a good direction. Sega previously just ran away from every single gameplay combination they couldn't make work. They seem to be attempting to make Unleashed's gameplay finally WORK according to the damn levels, with design that fits the gameplay, colorful and playful settings, and an actual good quality game.
