Oh daaaarling, I've been here, I've been there, I've been everywhere.

Anyway, planning on getting a 3DS, not at launch, seeing as the lineup doesn't interest me in the slight bit, but I'm getting the earliest model possible, to facilitate Homebrew. I can't wait to see how it works. 3D Homebrew? God damn the thought makes me moist.

You know what's delicious?

I know what's delicious.

The fact that Nintendo of Japan, for many, many, maaaaaany years, never once cared about making a truly wonderful and deep story for the Metroid series, with a good plot and details, with personalities and integral functions for every single character to have motivations, expectations of everyone around them and a coherent narrative, with all that comes around it.

And recently, seeing the success that the Prime series had with its incredibly well-crafted lore and environments, they decided to give it a try and finally create the world that so many fans had wanted for awhile, and to finally flesh out the characters and way things run through the universe of Metroid. They were finally doing what fans wanted them to do all along. To care about canon. To give characters personality. To make it so Metroid FINALLY HAS A TRUE NARRATIVE, and unlike Zelda, Mario and others, for it to be made coherent, and make things that happen in the games truly matter.

...and when they do it, they go full-on Twilight on the mofo. And the creator casually reveals... that he never actually thought about Samus' personality before this game. So basically... not just throwing the canon of the beloved Prime games out of the window, arguably one of the gaming trilogies to have a better sense of environment and ambiance ever made. But replacing it with a story that reveals that everyone's most cared-for childhood icon, a woman who is in EVERY. SINGLE. TOP. TEN. GAMING. HEROINE. LIST, simply because she is said to be the true feminist symbol of gaming, a woman who can do everything by herself, who is badass and amazing... was just wishful thinking on the part of gamers. All of it. Wishful thinking.

Because at the end of the day, your life's credits roll in. And M. Night Shyamalan appears. And he says:

"The twist at the end... is that you NEVER LIKED SAMUS IN THE FIRST PLACE! WHAT A TWEEST!" 8D

Had alot of fun with the first one waaaaay back then. Nostalgia only goes so far, guys, but I'm betting this'll be a good game to play around friends and have some fun. I'm kinda losing interest in MvsC3 for now.

« on: March 12, 2011, 01:19:33 AM »
Don't throw it all away yet. Facebook games get a crapload of flack, but it's honestly a terrific way to play quick good games along the day without having to worry about meaningless crap. I'm looking forward to what comes out of this.

1131
Was able to play around a bit with it the other day at a local event. Analog feels a bit weird at first, but you get used to it. Graphics look smooth. 3D effect feels honestly like a gimmick, I'll be playing it without it. I'm looking forward to see what they do with the graphics engine, really.

1132
I'd like to add that so far, Capcom really has done right with their outsourcing. Bionic Commando Rearmed was a fantastic game, and the sequel appears to not dissapoint. (And for the record, under all the crap, there was a really good game in Bionic Commando, under the awful level design and shitty story, there was solid gameplay and quite an innovative use of controls, unfortunately with a very steep learning curve and hard to get used to. It was a puzzle with good pieces built in the wrong order.) Blue Castle Games also seems to be doing a very good job with Dead Rising 2 (Case Zero was very, very good), so no problem there. As far as Ninja Theory, I honestly don't know. We've only watched one single cutscene so far, and obviously Capcom knows more about this than us, so even though the horribleness that's happening to the DMC franchise is painfully obvious, we should wait and see what else they can bring us. Who knows, we might be surprised. And obviously they know about the fans' rants, so maybe this was their goal. (since with the first trailer of DMC4, it also showed Dante slaughtering people all over, and that turned out to be a twist).

...so Capcom is less to blame for this than we think. Obviously they're still guilty for related stuff, but let's not get into that. I do feel that Mikami is right in the way that companies really need to create new experiences and new ways to play a game. (not in terms of controllers or hardware, but in terms of actual GAMES).

1133
The problem with the "western appeal" thing is that they're pretty much doing it wrong when they try to stick western influences in a game that's already doing well.

Look at the MGS saga. Kojima sticks quite enough western appeal in it, moreso in each new game, and it works. They don't need western developers to make western games, they just need GOOD developers to make GOOD games. Do some research on western culture, maybe bring some western people into japanese teams to help (God knows there are too many unemployed dudes in the industry) and it all works. No need for Capcom to do this kind of a mess, specially trusting development teams which are honestly in a lower quality level than they are.

I will say the Japanese gaming industry needs to evolve BEYOND their damn sequelitis, and game genres that never change. It is the age of the Indie, and alot of new companies are progressing with whole new ways to play and new experiences. Look at team ICO. Now that's an awesome way to create whole new games that connect to one another, yet are completely different experiences. The problem is, many japanese companies are way too focused on making the same games for the same people over and over again. They gotta try and think a bit like Nintendo, and try to access that "extra audience", having new themes, new gameplay experiences, new games which revolutionize the ways of thinking.

1134
Not talking about the XL. Talking about the DSi itself. We haven't even got some of those downloadable games which were promised down the line back when it was announced. Some people bought it specifically to get those games, what is the 3DS comes out before they do? Will they be left looking dumb, knowing that they bought an extra Nintendo console when they really didn't have to?

1135

Which did not have much of a lifespan or popularity.

...it didn't have much relevance either, might I say. It was more of an extra collector's piece than anything, since the SP was still considered the best way to play GBA games.

Honestly, as much as I'd love for them to revive a classic Sega franchise, I do think it would be best for them to carve their own history, and bring forth their own ideas into the table.

They should bring back a classic Sega franchise, only if they truly want to, as fans themselves (as they proved to be with all the references in Bayonetta). But new games and new experiences from the creative minds and developers at Platinum Games would be truly everything I want from them.

So, yes. Sega's given them carte blanche so far. Let's hope it continues to stay that way.

Well, he said that he was currently working away on "something wonderful" on his twitter. So who knows? 8D

Any way, wouldn't mind more 2D love some sort, either. But my thing is, there's only one genre left that I really wish Kamiya and P* would tackle next. A Vs. Fighting game.

There were talks about an "Umbra Fighter" on his blogs last year. That just gets my thoughts racing about what kinds of things Kamiya could introduce to my fave genre, if he was allowed to cut loose and give the game style the shot in the arm it's needed for over a decade (or at least, since the likes of Bushido Blade came out). Whether that ends up being "Umbra Fighter" or a brand new IP, is all up to whatever Kamiya and crew could choose. But I just think magical things would no doubt happen if P* and AM2 (Virtua Fighter people) were allowed to actually work together on something.

Well, as should be known by now, Kamiya says a lot of things. He'd love to go back to Viewtiful Joe, and even "whored out chicks" like DMC and Okami some day, too, for that matter. But the likelihood of all of that happening is, of course, very slim.
What's more, imagine what would happen is Kamiya, after his successes, was finally given free reign of whatever he wanted of old Sega franchises.

Can you imagine stuff like Streets of Rage or old AM2 titles being re-legitimized as good games by Platinum, with free reign on whatever twists and turns he wants to give to the gameplay, title and presentation?

Kamiya has made it known that he has NO problem with making sequels. He's even professed recently that he wouldn't mind going back to Bayonetta, or even the likes of Viewtiful Joe, if given the chance.

Besides, we more than likely can expect a Bayo successor in the future. A game that sold, at last count, more than a million WW? That was probably the main instigator for Sega keeping P* around more than anything else. And I, for one, have no problem with that.

(click to show/hide)

Just pointing out the irony that Platinum has offered us fresh new experiences so far, and that's what made them great in the first place. =P Got nothing against sequels, I'm just much more interested in seeing what amazing thing they can pull out of their hat next.

Three things.

1. So Goldeneye & Perfect Dark aren't proper FPS games all of a sudden? I'm mostly basing this on your off hand comment about proper FPS games on consoles. If they weren't proper, then what the hell were they? Put simply, they were incredible given the advance in design and potential for these games to exist on a console, and they were designed for the consoles that they were made for at the time. Technical evolution be damned, without them trying to do something, there wouldn't be console FPS, plain and simple. And hell, if anyone here wants my God's honest advise on playing FPS games, the [tornado fang] are you doing with a dual analog controller? Keyboard and mouse all day, distant runner up Wiimote & Nunchuk. XD

TL:DR version of this is simply this. People need to stop seeing in [tornado fang]ing reverse and realize that things stack up one on top of the other.

2. Everyone in here should know or already knows that with the next installment of the DASH games, there will be change to accommodate for the 10 year progression in input design and technology that we've gone through since DASH2. What I don't seem to understand is why you feel as though the game will be fundamentally broken for using a "step up" evolution from the controls of 2000. Not everything requires a dramatic earth moving shift in order to accommodate everyone. May I direct your attention for a bit to the 3D Zelda series that still uses a similar control and input method as it did in 1998 and still manages to be accessible, interesting, and show change all at the same time?

TL;DR version - Most people here aren't saying they would hate change, they are saying that the game should be fun in the same way that the first two entries were. Stop. Drawing. Conclusions.

3. Confession time - We've been on pretty good terms honestly, especially since there's never been a person on RPM like you to give an interesting 100% "on the other side of things" opinion about a lot of things game wise, HOWEVER... That will all change and very rapidly if I have to come in guns ablaze and defend the "poor Neanderthal, 'drools on their own [parasitic bomb]' weeaboo" members one more time. How come I can direct a reply at anyone without coming to such an abrasive conclusion and you can't seem to based on your response above? Lighten up, it's the net after all. :P

TL:DR version - Say that again, SAY THAT AGAIN, I dare you...

Let's see... I'll try not to repeat myself here, because I'm getting tired of this.

1- They're really good games, they were awesome for the time, and they still manage to be pretty good today. But their controls are atrocious for today's standards, and there is NO FPS nowadays that offers button camera controls as an alternative to analog controls, no matter what the game is. Analog controls are STILL the best console-wise, because as good as the Wiimote is at aiming, it's awful at turning and overall camera control, making the FPS games that use it much more sluggish. MY trouble is with people saying that the current games should have the old controls. Which doesn't make any [tornado fang]ing sense, just as putting Killzone 2 with button camera controls wouldn't. Yes, keyboard+mouse still reigns, but it's hard to pull off in a non-PC environment. Analogs bring the experience as close as it can be.

2- The only step-up evolution there would be is this. The fact that both sticks would be used for movement and turning/camera control. But I also think the game would change too, because back then, it was limited by the technology of the time, and it came out a bunch of repetitive mazes with samey textures. A new game would be FAR different from that. It would provide more obstacles, less straight pathways to follow, and of course, the controls would have to allow the kind of movement through those sections. Yes, the controls would be QUITE evolved, the kind that would pretty much change most stuff from the old games. So my point stands.

3- My insult was directed at people who didn't read what I read in the first place and made me repeat myself constantly, making the same points that had already been made.

Hm... well, I still have some deep love for a few Silver Age stories. It's a different style, not as serious or realistic of a narrative as we have now, but they still maintain their merit, and they're pretty damn good.

Heck, the Spider-Man newspaper strip is pretty much a Silver Age comic. And it's awesome.

Okay, at work and at a computer. Now where was I...

And again, bullshit. Who's seeing this bang of an announcement, besides the people who are constantly being updated on the net like this? Also, WHERE are they seeing this bang of an announcement? If your answer is the internet, you've just went on to show that kids don't always have access to the internet, or get updated as much as we do. So guess what? THEY. DON'T. MAT-TER. BECAUSE ANY BIG BANG ATTACK ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THIS GAME IS GOING TO COME ON THE INTERNET, THE VERY SAME INTERNET YOU CLAIM THIS OTHER MARKET DOESN'T HAVE. They will eventually find out that Spider-Man is in the game anyway, whether be it word of mouth, magazine, or perhaps a mention on X-Play. But I really have no idea where you think Capcom could market this game or announce it with a bang that the kids you seemingly want this marketed to are going to see it.

LoL, and no I don't think comic ads reach a big crowd. But you're saying the crowd that Capcom should also be trying marketing to, other than the people who are constantly getting updated the same way we are, don't get updated like us or have access to the internet. So I was bringing up a possible example of where else this "audience" of yours is possibly going to find out that Spider-Man is in the game in the first place.
The MvsC3 announcement reached far more places than the net, boyo. There were ads all over the place. And places like game stores and malls everywhere usually run the latest game trailers in their screens. I guarantee you that showing Spidey there back when the game first came up would have done wonders for its marketing.

Gaming / Re: Castlevania

Well, to play devil's advocate, he and his team knew that they were going to have quite the uphill battle to wage. You got the IGA fanboys who are ready to nitpick at any given turn, you got the old-school CV fans like myself, who want to believe, but had to get past the initial and obvious GoW-image and you got the mainstream market, who basically was waiting for a reason for why they should care for this game.

So far, everything is pulling together for THIS game to be the kind of CV game we should have gotten over decade ago, but hell, better late than never. Even Japanese fans who pretty much gave up the series entirely under IGA's "reign of terror" are looking forward to this game, thanks to the serious pedigree behind it via Kojima and a number of favorite voice actors.

And can you believe this game comes out in like, two weeks? October 3-5, depending on where you live in NA/Europe, with Japan a month or so later! I'm ready!  owob
Honestly, they should give the middle finger to the fans and let the game turn out to be the best they can make.

That way, everyone who MATTERS is happy.

1146
It's means you are bat crazy for taking it this serious.

The controls for the Legends game worked and it worked fine for those games (sans Lock-On perhaps. Improvements for Lock-On is welcome), and it didn't seem to stop people from enjoying the games either. MML doesn't need its controls "redone" for this generation, in my opinion. As someone said, you don't fix was wasn't broken.
Again, it's like saying black and white soundless movies should be made to be played in our HDMI TVs.

...the old controls were made for the old style of the game which was hampered by the technology of the time. A New Legends game, if not retro, would have to adopt a completely different control system.

In other words, the old controls were made because there were no analog sticks at the time, and most of the game took place in repetitive mazes. If there were, and the technology allowed for more variety, the game would have been very different.

...but I'm repeating myself, because honestly, many of the people I'm trying to explain my point here are [tornado fang]ing dumbasses who refuse to play any game with that kind of gameplay to begin with, so end up having NO idea how accurate controls work in the first place. AGAIN, like I said, it would be like when Goldeneye and Perfect Dark put the camera directions in buttons. It was in buttons because there was no second analog. When controllers started having a second analog, THEN we started having proper FPS games in consoles.

But of course, people will continue to not read my comments, and people will continue to say the same thing, that they liked the old controls and that the new game should have the old console, while banging their heads in the desks to make fire and drooling in their food to keep it warm. Thus is the ignorant weeaboo caveman life.

I'm [tornado fang]ing done.

Nomura already confirmed that Kingdom Hearts III is just the end of the 'Xehanort Saga' and afterwards there will be a new main character alongside Sora, but Sora will still be the central character.

This is old new guys :v

Oooooh, no. Alot of fans go "SILVER AGE BULLSHIT", but seriously, look at DC's storylines. They are NOT going back to the Silver Age, far from it. They are, of course, bringing back some elements that were used in both the Golden and Silver age, but they are definetly moving the narrative in a more sophisticated direction, making comics tell more epic storylines suited to them instead of being stuck in the 90's rut.

DC just realised something with Morrison. "Instead of creating new characters all the time, why don't we go and look for the old concepts we created so many years ago? There are many of them which would make such awesome villains!" So they did. And that proved to be good. It's not a comeback of the old ages, but rather using old elements in new concepts and new narratives and new storylines.
