Agreeing above on graphics.

If it was all Legends PSX quality in it's entirety, as much as a cop out that is, It would still look good.

The reason the prototype didn't particularly look good is not because any one part of the game was lacking in individual quality, so much as it was inconsistency between the assets. The character models were well made with a nice high poly look, very contrasted with the buildings with had a down right minimalistic look. That contrast is what creates the bad look. Though you can't deny other 3DS games already looked better, consistency aside. I believe this is merely due to it being a prototype version.

In America he is now a post-op tranny. In japan, he is still pre-op and just tucks away his business. Straight from the producer's mouth.

If that still bothers you on either side of the fence, I'm sure they'll include a Roxy alternate color. Roxy is all woman, so you're safe.

None of us have put money into development of the game

Time is money, and we put a lot of time into it as a fan base. You know, dev room and all.

Random thought;

Remember the story of Dead Rising? It initially got rejected, and the dev team started working on it in secret in their own time. Breaking the rules so to speak. Eventually resubmit it for approval, and hope for the best. Think that could happen here?

I know I'm grasping at straws, but there really aren't many other options...

I'm hoping you actually saved those, instead of linking to files we all know were going to disappear once found?

You know, cause they're gone now.

Even if your project is not for profit, you can be sued for use of copyrighted material. They have every legal right to stop you from using their copyrighted material in your fan works. The only thing you're protected from is legally passing it off as a parody. Typically you're going to get a C&D before a lawsuit, since it's easier for them, but they can legally just toss the lawsuit at you right away.

Case in point: every DBZ fan game worth 2 cents has been shut down by Funimation, who holds an iron grip and a stone heart when it comes to this. Ever notice that the DBZ official games even, have [parasitic bomb] like "Goku TM" and [parasitic bomb]? They're super Nazis when it comes to their copyrighted material, especially DBZ.

Another classic example of this is the Star Trek series. Paramount went out of their way to send out cease and desist letters to FAN SITES. They crusaded against their own fan base with zero tolerance, shutting down countless Star Trek sites. How did the fans get around this? The parody loophole. Ever wonder why the majority of Star Trek sites have been parodies of Star Trek? Now you know. I think since then they've relaxed things a little, but I'm not sure.

Capcom and Konami have a history of encouraging fan creations, and fan sites. Capcom even has (or had at one point) fan site starter kits. I can't recall a C&D from Konami or Capcom ever. Feel free to inform me though if it has happened. With Capcom's ever changing and degrading management perhaps that will change, but I see no history of it.

I'd take the game over nothing any day. It as it was, was pretty good looking. Visually rough, but the gameplay looked nice. It looked like a smoother Legends 2 with improvements and new abilities. That in itself is great.

Also, it's a prototype people. Of course it's going to look rough. Not demo, not beta, not 'episode one', a PROTOTYPE. You guys do know what prototype means, right?

PB pretty much said it all, but yeah. I am profusely disgusted. I have never felt such disappointment toward a gaming company ever. This is far too big a spit in the face to all Legends fans to ever live down.

So far looks like you're off to a great start. I don't see why you won't be including X and Zero at once though. It looked cool there in your video, and I always liked that about the newer titles.

Any ideas why? I never had this with BlazBlueCS's PC dump.

This is the second time too. First was Dawn, where he was also scrapped as a playable character but still has hidden dialogue. maybe 3rd time is the charm?

Yes, exactly. I was hoping for some long lost unreleased DoS sprite sheet to be used for HD. It would have been great.

612
Does anyone else find the game's controls to be really stiff? It feels like 2001 all over again. It's getting really annoying.

I really hate what HD represents, but it may be the only way to play as more Shanoa, so maybe...

I am disappointed they didn't follow through with their plans to add Hammer. I was so excited when I found out he was planned by ripping the game files apart. A previously never been playable character would have sold me. Such an unconventional gameplay he would have had too.

It's a long shot but maybe the PS3 version will eventually have him? The PS3 also has the advantage of a good dpad, which I didn't like about the 360.

Depends on how they coded it. The way my current 2D engine is coming out, just about every file completely removable. Just don't reference anything you removed and you're fine. That said, as a hobby dev I have more time to do these things. When you're in a rush you tend to cut lots of corners.

So while it seems everyone was upset over nothing, I still think it was for the best as a matter of principle.

THIS

How are people missing this point? I know the internet is full of mindless idiots but this is so slap you in the face obvious it's shameful anyone can't get this already.

Original / Re: SNES and PS graphics
« on: July 01, 2011, 06:52:52 PM »
The SNES has a 16 palette limit. 8 for sprites, 8 for backgrounds. The PS1 has a substantially greater amount.

The SNES has a far more limited VRAM. Not as many sprite or background tiles can be loaded at once, giving duller and less detailed scroll patterns. I can go into greater detail here, in how Rockman & Forte's player sprites are handled in a completely different way than Megaman 8.

The SNES was limited to 4 background scrolls (layers). PS1 games do not have that limitation for the most part. Layers are 'logical' and not 'physical'. They coded the game to display textures in a grid pattern, thus creating 'layers' but the hardware itself does not have 'layers' natively. Most 2D games have to do this, since current hardware typically doesn't support actual layers or have crippled and or limited use.

Case in point: The DS actually has layers, but none of the Castlevania games use them, and I don't believe ZX and ZXA do either. The reason is, you can get far better effects by simulating layers instead. The DS doesn't offer a full range of effects that you can get using the 3D render routines instead.

Similar example: Computer harddrives. You can section a physical single harddrive into many partitions. Windows will treat these partitions as if they were each a separate drive. Partitions are 'logical' drives, but they all exist on the same 'physical' drive.

In conclusion, while there are obvious hardware limitations that do effect things in this instance, there is also some due responsibility of the developers to make the most of what they have. Some portions of Rockman & Forte did well, and others did not. It's not a bad game, but you do wonder when you look at games such as Seiken Densetsu 3, or Tales of Phantasia, how much better it could have been visually.

I hope that clears things up a little. I can give more detailed info on any of the sections if you are curious or confused.

I stopped doing the buying imports thing for games that don't have a very good reason for being held back on a world wide release.

They won't publish it here, so they don't expect my money. That's cool, cause they WON'T be getting it.

619
Well now, that's some pretty good news. Hope I wont be tired of it, playing the PC dump, by then.

It has two internal (not in-game) slots for saving. One of them is for back-up if you accidentally pull out the cartridge too early. If you are not able to save a game properly, it will load a session from your last game play.

Gah! A valid feature any other day, but in this ONE case I curse it's inclusion!

Wow. This is a crazy example of removing staple user control out of a digital media. This is terrible. It serves no purpose other than to restrict the user. I will be boycotting this game.

(I wonder if it would clear the save data to pop the cart during saving or forever corrupted save data.)

X4 and X6 had a single mug shot though, of just the head and shoulders (not even shoulders for X6). MHX had many poses. It's like bitching that X6's cut scenes don't have the armor showing.

I think the problem here is you must be some neck beard room hermit who never leaves home. It's a portable gaming machine. It can be anywhere. On a trip, on a flight, in the car, at your friends house, on the beach, in the park, etc etc etc. It's meant for a little bit here, a little bit there, and switch to this right now. As exemplified by the pause anywhere features all modern handhelds have had.

Plans change unexpectedly, things happen suddenly. When plans change, and I'm either waiting or bored I might just want to pull out that portable gaming machine. However today I'm in the mood for Megaman X, so I'd like to play that, but it's on a previous system. I'm pretty sure I wont be, or have the time to go, driving back home, exchanging systems, and driving back every time.

If Nintendo can get it right, Sony is surely capable of it too.

624
Anyone else have the feeling they're going to be sinking all this capital and resources into this project, and it'll just remain a hidden gem ignored by the majority, never make any money, and the company goes belly up?

It's a day one for me, but it honestly doesn't look like something the majority would buy or even pay any mind to. It also doesn't have any precedence or big title to back it up, like Street Fighter.
