Title: Tomorrow is E3! RPM Discusses & Speculates

Another year, another pre-E3 gathering thread and all of it headed by myself. How's it been guys? Anxious to hear more about that sleek & sexy NGP Sony's been reluctant to show more of? Hyped for some Microsoft shenanigans including new Kinect experiences and potential entries in the Halo/Gears franchises? Or are you ready to get your Nintendo cappuccino on with a blowout on Project Cafe, the next in a long line of Nintendo systems? With hundreds of new developments primed to hit the net in the next few weeks time, a lot of unknowns and uncertainties to current rumors and teases and numerous 3rd party announcements ready to drop at any given moment, this is the best time to be a gamer and enjoy our hobby. That being said RPM, this is our place for all of the dreams, the news that breaks between now and June 5th and most importantly, to have fun with our hobby. Let's do this. 8)

Color me hyped. I can't see what Namco breaks out this year (hopefully). Will Legends 3 show? DO IT CAPCOM!! What's in store for that mysterious Sonic game that we were teased about? I'm all ears for that. How's about that Playstation Heroes Sony?

Will Skullgirls make it's E3 debut along with it's indie brother, Cave Story? Let's see what happens next.

Oh man, I was already collecting the sources for and linking to things, but having an allergy attack means that everything's going to get posted a bit later than usual. I think I'll just leave a post linking to this thread in all the big rumor collecting threads right now though.

At this point, why not just lock the Wii 2 topic and put the link to here in your last post. Like you said, might as well just use this topic.

SO, to get this started, with all the problems of PSN plus the soon-to-be impending lawsuits against Sony for this debacle, what do you guys and gals think is going to happen. One of my friends told me that the lawsuits coming are in the billions range, which could really hurt Sony considering that I don't think the PS3 made much of a profit for them. Plus with the NGP easily being in the $350-$400 range, I don't see that being very profitable either.

Man, I just can't imagine how massive this must be for Sony. What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall during the conferences they had discussing these past few weeks worth of online sabotages they've suffered.

This is EXACTLY why one should not be tying a Credit Card to a video gaming account, if you ask me.  It's convenient, when it works.  When it doesn't, this happens.  Unfortunately, Sony offers no choice in the matter.

As far as Square Enix goes, Versus is confirmed to be there.
FF13-2 will be released this winter so an appearance is very likely.
Type-0's release is drawing close as well, so I'm counting on content regarding that.

That's all the SE stuff I know of right now.

Honestly, most of my anticipation focuses on Nintendo.

So looks like the first bits of new E3 relevant info has hit the net tonight. First off, here's the floor plan for the venue. (http://www.mapyourshow.com/shows/index.cfm?Show_ID=E311) Notice how Sony & nintendo both have "Xbox hueg" convention spaces this year?

The next is more interesting for the here and now. Apparently, retailers will be getting briefed in advance on what to expect in preparation for pricing and reveals set to take place at E3 this year. (http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/05/10/retail_meetings/) All of these meetings for Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and Sega take place within the space of this week with Sega & Microsoft's happening simultaneously. What does this mean for us lay people? If there's any chance of a leak of massive proportions, it will come from retailers who attend these briefings before E3 and as such keeping an eye on them might be best if you can't save your hype for June. XD

Intresting Floor Plan, Nintendo on One Side, Sony on the other. Not like it really matters to normal people since its Invite only still (Is it? Not terribly sure.)

In the South Hall: Activision wastes more space with their dying cow, G4 strives to say "We're still relevant!", THQ continues with being completely irrelevant, and EA hogs a massive chunk of the opening area with more Annual Madden and NBA games with new added "Feature".

(I know I'm being harsh, but I honestly only really care bout what Ninty, Sony, Microsoft, Capcom, and Sega have in store for us, As I actually by games they make, well, except Microsoft but thats only because I lack a 360.)

I think the fact that Viper didn't notice goes a way as to saying WHY MMU was cancelled...  Really, how much buzz can a MM2 remake get when the last two sequels were already made in its image?

It's no far stretch; Cafe will probably be "marginally" more powerful than 360/PS3 in the same way that the Wii is more powerful than the Gamecube (translation: many games will look worse than 360/PS3 due to half-assed development, regardless of system capabilities).

I have to admit, though, I really question where the gaming industry is going in the next console generation.  I don't see a new generation sustaining itself if the demand is coming solely from developers and not from the players, which is what seems to be happening.  Nintendo has it a bit easier in terms of public perception (and harder with the 3rd parties, as usual) on account of their being behind weaker tech than their competitors (certainly nobody would say that the DS didn't need the power upgrade; they just need to get their ducks in a row with software).

The issue I see with future generations of consoles, is that they certainly wont be getting any cheaper. As the technology becomes more and more new, and more and the consoles cost more to make, their prices will go up. And up. And up.

Wouldnt surprise me if some day in the future we begin to get consoles with the same price ranges as new computers.

Honestly, this is why I actually applaud what Nintendo did with the Wii. They held off on the high end stuff for now because despite what a lot of nerds/techies might think, HD Flatscreens and such were not as common as people think when the Wii first came out. They made their Wii Fortune, brought in a whole new crowd, and now HDTV's are totally integrating their way into the homes, plus parts are most likely cheaper to make. So now, they can probably make a much more powerful system for much much less than the $600 original PS3 asking price!

The real trick will be seeing if they can not only draw back some of the crowd they lost as well as keep the crowd they gained. I think the latter will be harder than the former. Wii shall sii though.

I'm sure they plan more than we think.  As completely ludicrous as their ideas come off, they are a games-exclusive company, meaning they have less room for error than Sony and Microsoft.  Which really, I believe, is WHY they took to a different direction with the Wii.  If S&M were game-exclusive companies as well, I don't think they would have survived this console generation.  They saw some tremendous hardware issues in their early days; Sony with cost (which later took its toll on compatibility) and Microsoft with build quality.  And I think Nintendo was well aware of the fact that it was simply impossible for them to go along that same path.  If they had released a $600 Blu-Ray Wii HD in 2006, they'd have been toast.  Whether the third party devs want to admit it or not, it was the best thing Nintendo could do for their survival in the industry.

Oh, it's already happened, it's just that we're provided with alternatives.

Really, though, game systems are NEVER as powerful as PCs besides maybe the day they come out.  I think the fact that devs are using that as their benchmark for gauging the need for new gaming-specific hardware is going to get them into trouble.  Yes, we're at the "typical length" of a console life cycle.  Yes, the issues that make big-budget PC gaming such a hellhole for the devs haven't gone away.  But you know, consoles hit some pretty big budget concerns when last-gen kicked off, both hardware and development, and that's not going to go away either.

I'd say it's a good mixture of the two. A lot about this current gen speaks volumes towards that idea.

Actually, now that i remember, there have been costly consoles in the past which flopped due to price. One that comes to mind is the 3DO, with it's $699 price tag in Pctober 1993, which didnt go down until near it's death in March 94.

Let's not forget something I pointed out in the original Cafe thread...

If you adjust for inflation, the NES's launch price was the same as the PS3's.

Looking at it that way, the cost of consoles hasn't really gone up so much as the value of money has steadily gone down since the 1980s.

I know I'm usually the optimistic one, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that this concerns me. (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-05-03-project-cafe-has-8gb-storage-report)

If true, they had DAMN WELL BETTER program Cafe to stream off of storage expansions, as the 3DS does with its SD slot.  None of this "automated copying" crap that we got with the Wii.  I know Nintendo's big on durability and minimizing moving parts, but they need to do a better job of long-term storage expansions.  Period.  Recognizing a USB hard drive would be beautiful, though I doubt they'd actually do that.

Honestly, at this point if it's something new or a relatively little franchise I'll just assume NoA won't localize it until proven otherwise to save myself some disappointment. It's not just Last Story and Xenoblade (not even all their "big" franchises are safe right now, remember that FE3 remake? Yeah). Hell, the only reason I have any kind of faith for an NA release of Xenoblade right now is because it was pretty much announced at E3 as Monado originally.

I got some good news and some sucky news on Skullgirls, E3, and some other upcoming conventions. Autumn Games and Reverge Labs are planning to have a booth ready previewing the game at E3, sadly it's only open to the media and gaming industry personals only. But that's not to say the general public won't be able to get a preview of Skullgirls, because the guys and girls at Autumn Games and Reverge Labs are having a Skullgirls Summer Preview Tour all thought summer 2011 (http://skullgirls.com/news/2011/05/25/skullgirls-summer-preview-tour) (with tour dates and everything). They're still finalizing the tours and whatnot, but if anyone's planning on going to any of these conventions, you might have a chance get a sneak peak of the game's current progress. Now to figure out a plan on going to the East Coast Throwdown in Morristown...

After seeing Kojima announcing the HD package of Z.O.E. 1+2, all I can say is: LET THE END OF THE WORLD COMMENCE!! >w<
I really missed playing 2nd Runner back when I had a PS2, but now that I can play it again on my Xbox 360 and PS3 owners can relive the mecha-action beast that 2nd Runner is - in glorious HD no less - this is the best Z.O.E. news I've heard all day.

That and Despair for PS3. Not in any way shape or form highlights or E3 worthy news however. Show me the 3DS game. I'd even settle for the unknown Alucard game. Anything but Despair!

I feel despair knowing we wont get anything for Castlevania's 25th other than DLC and a port of that shitty game.
