I'm not upset, I got so much out of that post.

Anyway, got it hooked up, this update is taking a lifetime to download.

Unplug it.

PS: Don't unplug it, only stupid people unplug things during a firmware update.

Like I would be dumb enough to brick my console by doing that.

Your laptop should be fine. The only thing affected by turning off the Laptop during Windows Update would be the Hard Drive and the files on it.

5 GB mandatory Firmware update at-launch.  Which cannot be interrupted whatsoever, or you'll have to restart the entire download.

I repeat: 5 GB mandatory Firmware update at launch.  Which cannot be interrupted whatsoever.  Or you'll have to restart the entire download.

Do you know what it does?  I'll tell you what it does.  It enables the web browser, Nintendo Land, and other online features.  Oh, and let you play games.  Probably.

So, to reiterate: Mandatory 5GB firmware update to enable the most basic of functions.

Way to go, Nintendo.  Way to go.

I heard its actually more like 1.5 GB.

Anyway, LOVE the Transfer process.

So... Pack-in Nintendo Land doesn't come with a Club Nintendo code.

Great logic nintendo, people put that on their 'Intend to buy' list and now its going to just [tornado fang]ing sit there.

Wasn't the "5GB" Number just a remark by some guy on twitter that some news blogs decided to quote or even repeat?

Also, normally the firmware for a released system can be months old. By doing this they can insure that they can keep developing the firmware up until the actual release day. It's not a complicated process. You tell it to start, and you go eat something. Watch some TV or some internet videos. Play Monopoly or Chess. You should be glad it's not as complicated as installing Windows. With that you have to press "Next" or "OK" every once in a while. I would hate to see the dismay if Nintendo required that.

I heard its actually more like 1.5 GB.

How does that even work? Are there two different programs that run on both systems? I wanna say it uses WiFi, but then why is the SD card needed? I guess this is a bonus for people who didn't trade in their Wii to get the Wii U and instead just bought the Wii U.

About the Intend to Buy thing, email or call Nintendo. They make mistakes sometimes, but if you take the time to call or email them and be polite about it, they are usually happy to help you to a solution.

Better than the alternative: staring at a repetitive loading screen.

And we all know what that does, it makes people unplug their console for some reason.

PS:

"
Hello,
Thank you for writing. I can certainly understand your concerns. I can confirm that Wii U has an "Auto Power-Down" feature, which automatically powers down the system after a set amount of time. However, the amount of time can be adjusted (or even completely disabled) in the system settings of the Wii U console. For more information about this feature, be sure to check the following page on our website:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/system_settings.jsp?menu=auto_power_down&submenu=wup-settings-ht-auto-power
If you have any further questions or concerns, feel free to write back.
Sincerely,
Alex Schuster

Mine got an error so I had to unplug it because the power button on the front wasn't doing [parasitic bomb] during the transfer.

[tornado fang]ing Sin and Punishment, and even after all that still can't put all my VC games in the Wii Menu.

Posted on: November 21, 2012, 13:32:55
Okay, now I got a second hang-up. Power Button was also useless this time too.

Though this time it was the typical "Hang up and Screech". Happened during Nintendo Land while playing the Octopus game.

You can play WiiU games without it.  It's mandatory for Wii, and basically all online stuff.

I've got a [tornado fang]ing headache now.

Another crash, by the way, fittingly enough in 'Donkey Kong's Crash Course'.

Guess the game deliberately [tornado fang]ing me over wasn't enough.

That's... still pretty significant, since a lot of people want all that.  But I guess Nintendo's target audience probably won't care.  It's just a shiny new game system to them, not a media platform or social networking site or cellular communication service or yadda yadda yadda...  I do wonder if the box for the system declares it's "backwards compatible" though.  I guess they'd need a little asterisk following that statement, now.

that update is closer to 1GB.

here's the thing: the basic model, which would also need this, only has about 3GB of usable space.

why would the update be BIGGER than the usable space on the basic? that is impossible.

OH [parasitic bomb] IM USING LINK AND I ACCIDENTALLY FINAL SMASHED A CUCCO OH GOD HELP
Just enjoy yourself, don't complain about everything

No. And it does not play Gamecube discs.

Well, me and a few friends decided to mess around with NSMBU and we had a blast playing through the entire game (Jesus, all of the dick moves we did to each other was priceless to say the least)

Anyways, I might go pick up some games while mine's on the way in the Mail. Anyone got suggestions for games? (I'm avoiding ZombiU by the way because I really don't like that game, more L4D2 over that game by all means.)

It's because they never had to test anything during the old, simple days of the NES. Because of this, they neglect to factor in what the current console systems are capable of in today's hardware.

Also, they don't give a **** because all they care about is $$$ and competition beating everyone else.

Admittedly the WiiU does seem a bit more prone to random lockups.  I got two on launch day and another one or two since then.

Maybe that "background stability" line Nintendo uses for every homebrew/piracy-blocking update they release could actually mean something next time around?

In all fairness, I got that with my Wii as well, but only after it'd aged a bit.  Dust, scratches, noiser fans, heating up due to the standby connection, and such.
