So, a nice-looking volume called "The Legends of Rockman" was released in Thailand in 2012, providing an overview of the classic series. Of note is the fact that it arranges the games in chronological order, including every title except the DOS games, Strategy, and Gold Empire. If this is a licensed product, that would lend the timeline some level of legitimacy. However, I'm afraid I can't read Thai, so I don't know if it was licensed by Capcom or if it was simply an independent work. The publisher appears to be Green Panyayan Publishing, under their "GPP Gaming Book" brand. Anyone have clarification?

It does happen between 8 and 9. The story acknowledged it. It's probably something that was changed from the conceptual phase, or a general reflection of their stance on side-stories as with Power Fighters.

So that ninth "surrender" screen Rockman shows is supposed to be from RM&F? I honestly couldn't tell because of the switch to NES-style graphics.

Another weird reference I've seen around the 'Net is that R&F is considered parallel to RM9. I... don't understand why that would ever be the case, but they all say that Inafune said it, despite not providing a source.

It's not a remix. It's the original track from the original game.

Really? That's weird. Every other game they've released music from has either gotten a complete release or enough pieces to qualify as a standard market soundtrack. But this is the only track we've ever gotten from Wily Wars.

This isn't related to the Capcom Music Collection, but I figured one topic for my inane soundtrack questions was enough. I have a few inquiries about the Rockman Rockman/Irregular Hunter X soundtrack bundled with the double-pack released in Japan. I've found track listings online, but some of the names are vague enough that they could mean multiple tracks. I'm confused about the following:

1.) Track 26 is labeled as "Wily Stage". Is this the track for the first two stages or the last two?
2.) Track 27 is "Wily Boss Battle". Is this the one for the first three boss battles or one of the two used in the confrontation with Wily himself?
3.) Track 29 is "Construction". This is obviously music for the level builder, but the game has two different mixes: the lengthy one for the editor and the shorter one for actually playing custom stages. The length of the track on the CD is smack in the middle of the two.

Any help is much appreciated!

Hmm... so it's only the US ports that remove the themes? Sorry, I should have made my question more clear: do any of the Japanese versions not include the themes? Basically, I'm gathering up a Mega Man music collection, but I'm only including tracks that are actually in the games because I'm OCD like that. I'm also excluding arranged music because I'm a dumb purist. And yes, I know that I'm cheating myself out of the ZX series' music by doing that (not to mention Zero 4 and Star Force 3).

I read that Rockman ZX's theme, "Asayake", isn't even in the game itself. Is this true of any of the other games with vocal themes?

It's not so much that they exist in a separate timeline. Power Fighters is still 6 months after Rockman 8, as stated. It's just that the game itself has several details that are at odds with the mainstream games. Leaving those in, the games we were presented exist parallel to some imaginary version of the same story in which these inconsistencies do not exist.

Ah, I see. But the games as presented are technically out of continuity, correct? Are there any other games where developer/creator/someone-with-authority statements have cast doubt on the events of the game? I know there's a statement regarding X Command Mission that can be interpreted as such, but that was pretty ambiguous.

X / A question about the different X3 soundtracks...
« on: August 15, 2011, 04:38:37 AM »
I noticed something odd as I was looking through the X1-6 soundtrack: there's an arranged version of the cast roll music for X3. But at the point where that music would play, the PS1/Saturn version either has "I'm a Believer" or the "Ending Theme", depending on where the game is from. Was the music composed for the game, but never used, and they just decided to throw it in the soundtrack? Or is it somewhere else in the game?

So... Mega Man was so damn good at soccer that it caused the arena to spontaneously self-destruct? What could have possibly triggered that explosion?

Original / Soundtrack-Related Questions...
« on: August 13, 2011, 10:06:15 PM »
This may seem like an oddly specific question, but I wasn't sure whether or not the track present on the album was the original or a remix/arrangement/what-have-you. I was wondering simply because it seems bizarre for that one track to be on there when no track from Wily Wars has ever been on an official album.

I never knew there were statements placing the arcade games in a separate timeline. Are there any such statements for other side-games, or were those the only ones?

Hmm... three questions:

1.) Do they have a redhead model?
2.) Are they anatomically correct?
3.) How easy would it be to hide one from my parents?

I'm afraid I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't asking if any of the side games were part of the timeline. I think they all are (even the crappy PC games). What I meant was: were there any other side games that were given internumerical titles at any point in their production? Also, as a side question, was ZXA ever actually referred to as ZX2?

Rockman Series / Re: Ever had a RockMan-related dream?
« on: March 09, 2010, 05:55:20 AM »
Incidentally, why is the green biker dude so popular?

I'm not sure. I think it had something to do with the fact that he and X were apparently the only two Hunters that HQ thought necessary to bring down an entire base full of Mavericks, so you'd think he'd be a badass on par with X. Then, in the intro stage, he gets punked in about two seconds while X proceeds to murder the entire bulding by himself. I guess the disparity was funny enough to create a meme. If there were two biker dudes who got killed, it probably wouldn't have been as funny.

Totally unrelated, but in my dreams, there's apparently Fire Emblem shaving gel.

Dude, if I could get my face as baby-smooth as Marth's, I'd [tornado fang]ing buy it. I NEVER get a close shave, no matter how much I try.

Rockman Series / Ever had a RockMan-related dream?
« on: March 09, 2010, 04:21:00 AM »
I was down with a terrible fever a couple weeks ago and had some pretty trippy dreams. One of them was RockMan-related, as well as head-explodingly awesome. It basically had Rock, X, Zero, Grey, and Trigger facing down a legion of enemies (I couldn't see what they were, it was just the usual black mass of objects used in anime to convey an army). Then the theme from the first Power Rangers series fades in, and Rock gives the command to "Rock on!" in the same manner as "It's morphin' time!". Then they go through some ill-defined Sailor Moon-esque henshin sequence in which Rock merges with Rush into the Super Adapter form, X gains the Ultimate Armor, Zero gets the black armor, Grey uses the Model A biometal, and Trigger puts on a helmet and equips the Shining Laser. And then, once they were all transformed, they did a traditional cheesy martial arts pose while multi-colored explosions went off in the background.

Then my dream shifted to something else. I had just finished watching a bunch of Rockman-related Let's Plays, so it sort of fits that I'd dream about it, but I haven't watched Power Rangers in years. Either way, I'd kill to see a sequence like that in real life, even if it's just a flash animation.

« on: March 09, 2010, 03:42:40 AM »
I read about the name Rockman 8.5 being found in RM&F's code, and wondered if there were any other side games given the honor of being shoe-horned into the numerical sequence. I know there was .EXE 4.5 (which never got an American release), but were there any others? Come to think of it, was ZXA ever actually referred to as ZX2?

General / So... are there any plans to continue the Retrospective?
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:20:39 PM »
I'm a huge fan of GameTrailers video game retrospectives, and was disappointed to see that they haven't done a Rockman retrospective yet. Then I saw that RPM was doing one of their own, but it just sorta stopped. Are there plans to finish up all the side games and continue to the other series?

Beat is in RMS? Where do I find him? I never saw him, but then again, I sucked at the game, so...

So, after you defeat him, does he join your cause, or just beat feet?

Also, Zan, what is your reasoning for Strategy being after TPF? I'm also interested in your thinking behind the placing of RockBoard and Soccer.

Well, Zan is obviously the real expert here, but until he comes up with his own timeline, here's mine. Note that I have no access to the various Japanese books (and if I did, I could only stare at the pretty pictures), so if any published guide contradicts this, inform me and I will revise it.

Rockman
Mega Man (PC)
Rockman 2
Rockman World
Mega Man III (PC)
Rockman 3
Wily Tower
Rockman World 2
Rockman 4
Rockman World 3
Wily & Right's RockBoard: That's Paradise
Rockman 5
Rockman's Soccer
Rockman World 4
Mega Man (GG)
Rockman World 5
Super Adventure Rockman
Rockman 6
Rockman 7

Okay, here's where it gets hairy. There's two different story arcs that go through the games past RM7: Forte's loyalty to Wily and Duo's presence on Earth. With the games that have been released so far, it is impossible to make these two arcs jive with each other without assuming events between games. I'm providing two examples from here on out, each focusing on one of the arcs. First an example of a Duo-centric timeline:

Rockman: The Power Battle
Rockman 8
Rockman Strategy
Rockman: Battle & Chase
Rockman: Gold Empire
Rockman 2: The Power Fighters
Rockman & Forte
Rockman & Forte: Challenger from the Future
Rockman 9

Duo arrives, meets Rockman, then leaves in RM8. He is seen fleeing to Earth in Strategy, is present without explanation in B&C and GE, and finally leaves in the end of TPF. The RM&F duology must take place after this because the museum from RM&F is the supposedly the same one Napalm Man built in the end of B&C. Throughout all this, though, Forte is switching to and from Wily's side several times. Now, here's an example of a Forte-centric timeline:

Rockman 8
Rockman Strategy
Rockman: Battle & Chase
Rockman & Forte
Rockman & Forte: Challenger from the Future
Rockman: The Power Battle
Rockman: Gold Empire
Rockman: The Power Fighters
Rockman 9

Forte is working for Wily in both Strategy and B&C (but disobeys him in the ending sequence of B&C), is unaware that he is fighting against Wily in RM&F (where he once again disobeys him), is working for Wily in CftF (in the end he decides to follow his own path), then goes completely rogue in the ending of TPB, apparently taking a copy of Wily's energy-producing plans with him so he can hand them over in GE.

He looked just as dead after RW2 (moreso, actually, since he basically fell from  orbit), so the concept of him being dead before RM4 still holds.

Original / Mega Man Chronology Discussion
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:04:44 PM »
Well, one was about to pop up, anyway, so I figure I could post it. This is basically a list of what we know about the placement of the spin-off games in the classic series (I wish they'd publish a definitive timeline, since this is the only series where the timeline hasn't been spelled out clearly for us). Any corrections or additions would be appreciated.

Mega Man (PC): Probably takes place before Rockman 3 (Rush is absent)
Rockman World: Takes place after Rockman 2 (RM2 Robot Masters are present)
Rockman World 2: Takes place after Rockman 3 (RM3 Robot Masters and Rush are both present)
Mega Man III (PC): Probably takes place before Rockman 3 (Rush is absent)
Rockman World 3: Takes place after Rockman 4 (RM4 Robot Masters and New Rock Buster are both present)
Wily & Right's RockBoard: That's Paradise!!: Takes place after Rockman 4 (Dr. Cossack and Kalinka are both present)
Rockman World 4: Takes place after Rockman 5 (RM5 Robot Masters, Beat, and Super Rock Buster are all present)
Rockman's Soccer: Takes place after Rockman 5 (Beat is present)
Mega Man (GG): Takes place after Rockman 5 (RM5 Robot Masters are present)
Rockman World 5: Takes place after Rockman 5 (Stated to take place after RW4)
Wily Tower: Takes place after Rockman 3 (Weapons from RM3 Robot Masters are available)
Rockman: The Power Battle: Takes place after Rockman 7 (RM7 Robot Masters, Auto, and Forte are all present)
Rockman 2: The Power Fighters: Takes place after Rockman 8 (Duo is present)
Rockman: Battle & Chase: Takes place after Rockman 8 (Duo is present)
Rockman & Forte: Takes place after Rockman 8 (RM8 Robot Masters are present)
Super Adventure Rockman: Takes place after Rockman 5 (Beat is present)
Rockman: Gold Empire: Takes place after Rockman 8 (Duo is present)
Rockman & Forte: Challenger from the Future: Takes place after Rockman 8 (Forte Buster is used as in RM&F)
Rockman Strategy: Takes place after Rockman 8 (Duo is present)

I'm not going to attempt to place all of them in a coherent timeline just yet, but here's the info if you want to do it yourself.
