Gaming / RPM Minecraft Server
« on: April 21, 2016, 06:54:56 AM »
Alice and I were talking about last week how it would be cool to have a RPM community Minecraft server. I personally really enjoy modded Minecraft, so I think it should be a modded server. That's not set in stone. If people enough people prefer vanilla Minecraft, we could do that. We could, but I don't think that's going to happen.

I can make the modpack. I'm okay at it. I can put mods together. I can also make the server. When it comes to hosting it and polish, that's where I need help. If anyone knows how to get free hosting or they're willing to host it, let me know. Also, if you know anything about mods and how to work MineTweaker and CoFH, I could use your help.

In terms of which mods and which version of Minecraft, I would suggest 1.7.10 because it has the most mods right now. 1.8.9 doesn't have a lot of support, but I honestly can't wait for it take off.

Here's my list of suggested mods:
Inventory Tweaks
Journey Map
Mekanism
Mouse Tweaks
Nether Ores
Not Enough Items
OpenBlocks
OptiFine
ProjectE
Thermal Expansion
Waila

Maybe list of mods:
Buildcraft
Extra Utilities
Iron Backpacks
Iron Chests
Magical Crops
Tinker's Construct

Keep in mind that we don't want this to be a modpack with a billion mods because those packs run like garbage. We want a lite modpack that most people can run with as few problems as possible.

Also, if no one wants this, that's fine. I just thought it would be neato, that's all.

Gaming / MMORPGs
« on: April 11, 2016, 12:06:35 AM »
Does anyone still play any MMOs? If yes, which ones? You can post your usernames here if you want. Personally, I play a few games and I'm interested in playing them with people.

I play The Old Republic. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I love BioWare. This is perhaps the only MMO I ever really got into because I really enjoyed the story aspect of the game. I really want to get into Final Fantasy XIV, but I don't have anyone to play with. :(

Also, I tried to find a pre-existing thread, but I couldn't.

Off The Wall / Tabletop Gaming
« on: December 13, 2015, 05:02:41 AM »
I've come out of lurking because I've been wondering something lately. A few years ago I discovered Dungeons & Dragons. It kinda changed my life. Before long, I was DMing my own games, creating my own monsters, classes, races, and whatever. I'm wondering if this is a symptom of getting older, but I enjoy having a lot of creative control in my games. I find it a bit frustrating when I can't have the same control over RPG video games.

So, getting to the topic: does anyone else play another tabletop games? If so, what games do you enjoy playing? I prefer Pathfinder.

This is a thread for posting your Skype username in a place that's easy to find for all RPM members, since Skype isn't available in our profiles. If you don't want your username known by the entire community, just don't post it. Easy! :D

My username is psychoyuffie. Obviously.

Entertainment / Girl Meets World, the Sequel to Boy Meets World
« on: November 27, 2012, 07:56:47 PM »
That's right. Disney is making a sequel series of the 90s hit series Boy Meets World called Girl Meets World. It starts the daughter of Cory and Topanga Matthews, Riley. Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel will be reprising their roles. It is still unknown if the show will happen or not, but they are casting and currently looking for a girl to play Riley.

I don't know if I'll watch it. I'm a bit old to be watching anything on the Disney Channel. :P I used to love Boy Meets World, though. I never missed an episode. That ol' ABC TGIF lineup... So nostalgic. :3

Rockman Series / Mega Man Archie Comics
« on: August 20, 2011, 11:15:24 PM »
I'm actually fairly surprised no one already posted about this. If someone has, I apologize, but I couldn't find a thread anywhere. In May 2011, Archie Comics began publishing Mega Man, just a few months before the Mega Man franchise was killed by Capcom. Strange move by Capcom, but as long as the comics keep coming, I won't complain.

But what kind of quality is the comic? Is it reminiscent of the old Ruby Spears cartoon or does it only pay attention to the Japanese source material? Well, the answer may surprise you: it's a little off both. It primarily focuses on the Japanese source material, when paying homage to the Ruby Spears cartoon in specific characterizations and scenes. Cut Man is definitely the most obvious nod to the cartoon series. Okay, we get it: you're Cut Man!

The general story though follows the most common accepted storyline of the first game: Dr. Light builds his robots for good, but Dr. Wily wants to use them for military applications. This leads to a falling out of the two scientists as Dr. Wily steals the six Robot Masters to suit his own devices. Also, it isn't above taking a few jokes at its own source material, where translation errors--both on the Japanese and American ends.

As you can see from the images, the art direction is definitely heavily based off of the Japanese official art--thank god. You can tell that the lead artist, Patrick "Spaz" Spaziante, did his research into the style prior to this comic. You may known Spaz from his earlier work in creating many of the awesome covers for the Sonic the Hedgehog comics, also published by Archie Comics. He more than proved to be amazing enough to be a lead artist with those covers, but this comics prove how versatile he is as well. Also, Mega Man actually changes color when he equips a new weapon!

Issue #4 harks the end of the first storyline of the comic: "Let the Games Begin." Hah! Get it? Because it's a comic based on a game and it's based off the first game in the...yeah... Anyway, the first storyline was very accurate to the storyline of the game, but I'm not sure if that's going to continue to be the case. Time Man and Oil Man were introduced at the end of Issue #4 as a cliffhanger just when everyone thinks that Dr. Wily's schemes are over. I believe that this is a fairly solid start to a good series. That is, of course, if you ignore the logic trappings of the original story: Dr. Light making robots to help people, but making them in such a way that they can be easily converted over to military purposes, so they become walking weapons of mass destruction. Incidentally, it looks like Archie Comics opted out of Oil Man's racist look by covering up his overly large lips with his bandana. Don't blame them.

Gaming / Portal 2: Time to have fun with science.
« on: May 03, 2011, 12:49:56 AM »
For those of you who, unfortunately, may not know, Portal was a game released by Valve in 2008. While it is technically a FPS, there is only one "gun" in the game, and that's a Portal Gun. The game is purely puzzle in nature. The star of the game is a woman named Chell, who has the misfortune of being a human lab rat for a company called Aperature Science. Still, for a science company, one has to wonder where all the scientists are... Well, you'll just have to play the game to discover that for yourself. If you haven't yet played Portal, it's only $10 on Steam. It's more than worth it.

Portal 2 takes place many years after the first. Chell wakes up in a Long-term Relaxation Chamber to find that the complex has become invaded by nature. The complex still manages to barely function as intended. GLADOS is also once again awake and she is not happy to see you at all. The puzzles are bigger and harder than ever before. The game is full of bonuses and Easter Eggs just waiting to be found. It also has a full-lengthed co-op campaign with its own story, starring two quirky robots.

Off The Wall / US iPhone Users: Sick of AT&T?
« on: July 30, 2010, 06:43:59 PM »
If you own an iPhone and you're sick of AT&T's horrible plans and even worse service, and you live in the United States, there's some good news for you. The Library of Congress' Copyright Office has ruled that is not illegal to jailbreak your iPhone to bypass its security for use on other cellphone service providers. Not only is this not illegal, but it does not void the warranty of the phone. This also will allow you to install and run applications not officially supported by Apple.

This flies in the face of Apple's original claim that people who buy an iPhone are just licensing the right to use that property and were not owners of that technology. As such, the modification or destruction of said property would render the customer in legal trouble. Many Apple users, not just for the iPhone, were disgusted by this new policy. And, honestly, if you're paying more than double the money for a piece of technology just because it has the Apple logo on it, you should be angry. The Copyright Office went on to say that any OS on any smart phone with independently developed applications falls under fair use, so Apple didn't have a case. It's a concept that is foreign to Apple.

So those of you out there who love the iPhone and have been waiting for the chance to switch to another service, here's it is. Apple can no longer force its customers to use AT&T.

Entertainment / Futurama Returns!
« on: March 18, 2010, 04:06:49 AM »
No, I'm not talking about another movie. I'm talking about actual episodes on TV. For the first time since 2003, brand new episodes will air starting June 24, 2010, on Comedy Central. Fans of the show have been begging for this for years, which is what spawned the movies. It was a bittersweet compromise, but the fans were happy to have something. Now, their prayers have been answered.

Personally, I loved this show and I was very upset when it was canceled. Family Guy returned before Futurama--twice! Futurama was a much better show than Family guy too. Oh, well. It's back now and I hope that everyone actually watches it, so it stays on the air. Yeah, I'm looking at YOU.

Gaming / Mass Effect 2 Review
« on: March 11, 2010, 08:04:44 PM »
Now that I've beaten Mass Effect 2, I'm going to give my thoughts on it. Everyone here should already know that it's getting high scores, but does it deserve them? Does it live up to the hype? Should you even bother playing it? Hopefully I'll answer those questions.

I've heard that some people think that the combat system remained untouched from the first game. I disagree. While it bears similarities, it does have some striking differences: cover actually means something now and some of the RPG elements have been turned down. The enemies have gotten a lot more HP or you do less damage than in the first installment, which means that battles last a lot longer. I believe the difficulty got cranked up because I did not die once playing the original, but I've died at least two or three times in Mass Effect 2.

My first play-through was with a Soldier that I imported from Mass Effect 1. Now, I'm playing through again as an Adept and the play styles are vastly different. Playing as an Adept feels a lot more rewarding than in the first game. It makes the game a lot easier. Isn't that a flaw, though? It seems like the game punishes you for being a Soldier. It evens out, though, if you use your team's abilities right. That's another difference. In the first Mass Effect, I didn't really feel compelled to use my teammates. They were there to fix the Mako, to hack, and do their own thing in battle. They were fine without my interference. It's nearly the same in Mass Effect 2, they will fight by themselves, but the AI can be stupid. They'll run in front of you--and I mean right in front exactly--as you're shooting your weapon. They're also less likely than in the first game to use their powers on their own. Now and then you have to say, "Stop shooting your weak pistol at the Heavy Mech and use Overload already!" Unlike the first game, which gave you access to a large amount of abilities, Mass Effect 2 is more streamlined by giving you a few powers to focus on.

Doing side missions is also a lot better than in the first game. In the first game, you landed on the planet, looked for resources and completed any side missions. It felt very impersonal sometimes and too gamey. In Mass Effect 2, you scan for resources. This is probably the only boring part of the game for me. You need these resources, though, to purchase Research to unlock enhancements. While in orbit over a planet, you will be told if an anomaly is detected, which means you'll be able to land on it. When you land, you art thrown into a barren wasteland, like in the first game, but you land into a side mission. This makes the game feel more cinematic and you feel like you're accomplishing something.

The general atmosphere of Mass Effect 2 is also different from the last game. It feels darker and a lot more desperate. The music enhances this feeling. It has some of the old, synthesized music score from the previous game, but not as much. It makes you think back on the first games as a more innocent time when things were less complicated. This fits really well with the story because Paragon Shepard will feel stuck between a rock and a hard place, trying to help people but working for Cerberus. This leads me to my next point: the alignment system.

It's a lot more sensitive than the first game. It pays attention to everything you choose and do. I tried my best to play through completely Paragon and I still earned Renegade points. Some people have told me that it's just simply impossible to get through either way as 100% Paragon or Renegade. I'm not so sure. Others say it's more realistic that Shepard wouldn't come out of working for Cerberus not scarred mentally. While that's true logically, we're not really talking about the same things. I'm talking about a game mechanic, not about philosophy. Maybe I need to think about buying a guide, so I can find out what mistakes I was making.

Now, let's get down to what most of you role-playing gamers are worried about: story. I have to tell you that the story is better than the first game. It's more compelling, has better characters, and the strangeness of the ending will leave you wanting more. The twist at the end was amazing. I personally didn't see it coming--that's just me. The ending is very weird, but I think most people will like it. I won't spoil anything, but essentially what Shepard is doing in this game is investigating sudden disappearances of humans on remote colonies. They appear as if they disappeared without leaving a trace. No matter how you ended the last game, the Citadel Council refuses to investigate because it's purely a human problem. Even the Alliance won't investigate because they believe it's simply slavers, pirates, and other criminals. Also, the galaxy has become convinced that the Reapers don't really exist and that Shepard was simply becoming delusional.
That won't be the case anymore in Mass Effect 3.
Unlike Mass Effect 1, the sequel feels a lot more high-paced, while delivering the same play time. The combat is more challenging, feels more fluid, and your orders actually matter now. How you receive side missions feels a lot more natural, but planet scanning still sucks. It's better than combing a boring wasteland for over an hour, though. The alignment system seems to be more advanced and pays closer attention to your actions and not just your choices. The atmosphere reflects the mood of the story very well. And the story is a lot less generic than the first game. I would recommend that you play this game, even if you aren't a role-playing fan.

Final Verdict: 5/5

Gaming / 360 Black Bars
« on: March 10, 2010, 11:16:44 PM »
A few of my 360 games have black bars on the bottom and top of the screen. Also, the text tends to be tiny too. This isn't the case for all the games, just a few. It's almost as if the games are trying to play in a 16:9 resolution on my 4:3 TV. Is there a way I can disable this?

Off The Wall / Graphic Card Hierarchy/Buying Guide
« on: January 12, 2010, 08:53:20 PM »
This is a chart of the current graphic cards that are out as of January 11, 2010. Only recent cards will be listed. I hope this helps some people who are considering a new computer or an upgrade.

Shared rankings are cards that are nearly identical in performance. The best one, though, will be listed first.

Dual-core GPUs will be marked with a *.

1. Radeon HD 5970* ($650-700)
2. GTX 295* ($520-770), Radeon HD 4870 X2* ($400)
3. Radeon HD 5870 ($405)
4. Radeon HD 4850 X2* ($220), Radeon HD 5850 ($300-360)
5. GTX 285 ($380-400)
6. GTX 275 ($250-370), Radeon HD 4890 ($196-210)
7. GTX 260 - Core 216 ($215-225), Radeon HD 4870 ($175)
8. GTX 260 ($185-210)
9. GTS 250 ($127-160), Radeon HD 4850 ($100-130)

There are others, of course. Older models and cheaper cards, but the ones listed are the ones worth buying.

Recommendation: Based on my research, the Radeon HD 4850 X2 is the best value of any other graphic card out there right now. It provides awesome performance at an affordable price. If you're like most people and can't afford to spend $400-700 on a single graphic card, it's your best bet.

Off The Wall / Cop pulls out gun on a snowball fight
« on: December 22, 2009, 05:26:31 PM »
Using Twitter and Facebook, a man orchestrated a friendly snowball fight in Washington DC. During the fun, some people driving buy would provoke some of the participants and receive what they were asking for: a snowball. Some targeted gas-guzzlers. A certain hummer stopped in traffic and was hit with a snowball. A man then got out, brandishing a gun. It turned out that this man was a detective for the local police force.

He approached the crowd and began yelling at them to leave or he'll have them all arrested. Another cop arrived on scene, this one uniformed and on-duty. He also had his gun out, but only because someone reported an armed man in the area. He holstered his weapon when he found out the man in question was also a cop. The detective was then hit with a snowball and people began chanting, "Don't bring a gun to a snowball fight!"

After being hit with the snowball, the detective charged at the one responsible. He grabbed him and brought him over to his Hummer, where he slammed the man against the hood. The man was let go and soon after, police forced everyone to leave. The detective has been forced into desk duty until the incident has been investigated.

Off The Wall / The Holiday Loot Thread
« on: December 21, 2009, 03:58:00 AM »
What did you get for your holiday? I don't really care what you celebrate. Hell, I've known Atheists who celebrate the non-religious side of Christmas. Anyway, what gifts did you get? Some of you may not have gotten your gifts yet. Just post them when you do.

Today we had a Family Christmas. It's where my extended family all gets together to have a big dinner and exchange some gifts. After coming back, my immediate family also exchanged gifts because my brother has to work on Christmas. I got a $20 gift card to Best Buy from him. One of my friends showed up to mooch off some food and also gave me a gift: Halo 2 for PC. My mom also got my a gift for Christmas; as such, it's still under the tree. I know what it is, though, because I was there when she got it. I even carried it around the store: an Xbox 360 Elite Holiday Bundle. It's a 360 Elite (obviously) that comes with two games. Now, before you start thinking I'm incredibly spoiled, my mom is only paying $100 of the price. I have to pay her back $200. On top of that, I bought a gift to myself: Fable II, Limited Edition (to go with my new 360).

Off The Wall / Allergies
« on: November 17, 2009, 06:21:43 PM »
In the last few years, I've been developing a lot of allergies. I didn't used to have any allergies, really. Now, I can barely take a step outside without going into a fit of sneezes. I'm even getting food allergies I've never had before. I can't begin to know why this is happening...

Just last night, I broke into hives. Why? I think it's because I started substituting milk with lactose-free milk--due to my lactose intolerance. I started using it in cereal a few months ago and I didn't have any problems. About two weeks ago, I started drinking it during meals occasionally. A week ago, I started drinking it regularly. I noticed some itchy bumps appearing, but I thought they were just bug bites. A week passed and these few itchy bumps had multiplied. Finally, last night, there was a massive break-out of these bumps and they became about 100 times more itchy than they ever had been before. These weren't bug bites, they were hives. I'm taking a break from the lactose-free milk for a few days to see if the hives go away. If they do, I think I have my culprit. I might be fine having it in my cereal, but no more than that. Could my lactose intolerance have transformed into a milk allergy? Not sure.

Fan Creations / Mobile Armor Rockman
« on: September 13, 2009, 07:55:25 AM »

In the year 2086 CE, the world had achieve the unthinkable: the creation of a safe, affordable means of leaving and entering Earth's atmosphere. This new invention came from the fruits of labor of two technicians: Dr. Light and Dr. Wily. Their prototype model of what they called Mobile Armor was called Blues. Its pilot was named First Light, Dr. Light's own son.

His test mission was simple: escape Earth's gravity, go to the moon, and return. His second was a little more complex: go to Mars and return. Each time, the distance got greater, to see how well equipped Mobile Armors were for deep space voyages and mining on asteroids.

Upon the huge success of Blues, Mobile Armors went into mass production. The significance of Blues's journey through deep space was marked by starting a new age: After Space Voyage (ASV). Commercial models were able to do everything Blues could, but they were unarmed. Space travel became so easy that anyone could do it. The space colonies were founded due to the ease of going from Earth to space.

The GUC (Global United Confederacy) wanted to begin mass production of their own military-grade Mobile Armors. Dr. Light refused. While Blues had been equipped with an arm cannon that Dr. Light called a Buster, it was only designed to protect Blues from debris in space. Secretly, Dr. Wily had already begun developing designs for military Mobile Armors, but not for the GUC, for himself.

Due to Dr. Light's progress on colony design, the colonies became self-sufficient and no longer required imports from Earth. The colonies mimicked the look of Earth, with imperfections in land and simulated weather. Dr. Light was shocked when the colonies used their new design as reasoning to secede from the GUC and form their own, independent government: Flotilla. Flotilla could gather resources from mining asteroids and make their own food due to their use of terraformed soil. They believed that cooperation with GUC slowed down decisions of great priority. Naturally, the GUC didn't react to the creation of Flotilla happily.

The most shocking part was revealed then. The one who seeded these beliefs in the people of the colonies and whose idea it was to create Flotilla showed himself: Dr. Wily. Not only that, but the pilot of Blues, Dr. Light's own son, confessed his sympathy for Flotilla's cause.

Off The Wall / Humans vs. Super Humans
« on: September 12, 2009, 10:52:53 PM »
Cloning, enhanced immunities, enhanced brain activity, enhanced, variable metabolism...

Everyone knows that they cloned a sheep. But did you know they've also cloned dogs, cats, monkeys, and other animals? One day, we may never have to worry about infectious diseases again. Also, the ability to think way beyond your current biological limits and be able to eat whatever you want without gaining any fat. All of these things seem like science fiction or something that's very far off, but in reality: it's the present. They can already clone humans if they want to and enhance our bodies beyond what they can currently do. Even clone our own organs for easy organ transplants. They've created hormones that can exponentially increase our thinking capacities or the speed of our processing. They've also created a hormone that can make our metabolisms automatically adjust to our calorie intake. Why aren't these things being used? Because they're illegal.

Regardless if they're legal or not, people are going to do use these things. In fact, since people are so keen to reject these things as unnatural, scientists are warning that it could cause a war in the near future. If officials don't wise up and realize that the time to start preparing to negotiate with these enhanced individuals could be sooner than they think, it could already be too late. A war between enhanced, super humans and the humans who oppose such enhancements... It definitely does sound like the premise of fantasy, but it's already knocking on our door.

Off The Wall / Falsely Accused
« on: September 09, 2009, 02:45:44 AM »
Today while I was at school, my parents got a call from our telephone company saying that we were illegally file sharing Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. We were ordered to cease this immediately. Problem is that I've never downloaded or shared this book or movie. If they were talking about the book, I own it, so why would I download it illegally? If they were talking about the movie, while I thought about buying it, I've never thought about downloading it. Harry Potter, to me personally, is one of those sacred things that I won't smudge with illegal downloading. I guess this is why I feel so insulted about it.

Entertainment / Beavis and Butthead Sequel
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:43:50 PM »
Mike Judge enticed his audience by releasing a video of Beavis and Butthead promoting his new film Extract. After which, he shared ideas of a new movie that would possibly feature the duo as older men--probably still haven't scored. With King of the Hill over, could we be looking at Mike Judge returning to his roots and bring Beavis and Butthead to a new generation?

Yeah, this game is already a few years old, but surprisingly I still find it fun. I thought that it would be interesting to start a leaderboard here on RPM. If you want your score put on the leaderboard, please take a picture of the final screen displaying your distance. If you don't have a screenshot, your score will not be added.

EXE / Getting Passed the Third Game
« on: August 25, 2009, 08:48:18 PM »
For some reason, every time I try to play through this series I putter out about halfway through the third game. I just can't get passed it. The first and second games were pretty good, but I can't help but finding the third boring. Am I alone here?

Off The Wall / Operating System

What are the most common operating systems that you use? These can include the ones that you use at school and at work, not just at home.

At the moment, I use Windows 7 at home and also Windows XP. At school, I use Windows Vista and Mac OS X Leopard.

Gaming / Current Generation Consoles

I'm curious about what consoles people own here. Myself, I only own a Nintendo DS. I only have it because it was given to me by one of my friends because he didn't play it anymore. It allowed me to play Pokémon Pearl, so I didn't mind it.

Gaming / The Old Republic

Am I the only getting totally excited over this MMO? Am I? It almost seems like it. I'm a big fan of the KOTOR games and since TOR has almost the same kind of system as it, I've become pretty excited. I'm hoping that some kind of beta comes out, so I can try it out a bit.
