Wait what? Video games... a form of art?

Well, according to an upcoming exhibit at the Smithsonian dedicated to 40 years of video games as just that, that would be the case. Suck it, Ebert.  And the best part?  You get to decide what video games are showcased!

Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, Ikaruga, Skies of Arcadia, Bioshock, Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros. 3, and Many... MANY more are contenders in 80 different categories.  So, sign up with just an email address, and vote for what I tell you to your favorites!

Off The Wall / Looks like I ain't a Capricorn anymore.

Someone added a 13th Zodiac sign, so that reshuffled the dates around.  The dates are as follows:

Quote
Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16
Aquarius: Feb. 16 - March 11
Pisces: March 11- April 18
Aries: April 18 - May 13
Taurus: May 13 - June 21
Gemini: June 21 - July 20
Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10
Leo: Aug. 10 - Sept. 16
Virgo: Sept. 16 - Oct. 30
Libra: Oct. 30 - Nov. 23
Scorpio: Nov. 23 - Nov. 29
Ophiuchus: Nov. 29 - Dec. 17
Sagittarius: Dec. 17 - Jan. 20

Assuming that this isn't total bs, I'm a Sagittarius now.

At first I thought I'd introduce the concept of the topic... but then I figured "why, when I can just get to the work?"

Pixel Art/Sprites
Most of these will be in the GBA Fire Emblem style

Fire Emblem series
Portraits ordered in chronological appearance... to the best of my memory.

Gaiden (warning: outdated)

Genealogy/FE4Advance

Only the ones I did myself/most of the work on.  Any portrait worked on by more than two people will very likely turn into a fustercluck.
Had some help from Asvel on Noish's hair.
Briggid is old an outdated compared to my older work.  May redo.

Path of Radiance

Radiant Dawn

Shadow Dragon

Skies of Arcadia

Baten Kaitos

Lyude is waaaaay outdated now.  Probably gonna redo that one if I ever feel like doing something about it.

Pokemon

Soul Calibur

Misc. Nintendo characters

Old Mii is oooooooold...

Misc. other characters

Some are recognizable, but I've got a few obscure ones here.

Sephiroth was a cleanup of one of flyingace24's portraits.  Don't expect much more squeenix from me than that.
Saki is in need of work, I'm aware.  The dude didn't have a lot of (good) references.
Jason's design is mostly how I'd imagine him looking today, since the last time he was in a game was in 2000.  Hair shading was referenced from one of Asvel's FE2Advance portraits.

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

Misc. projects

From left to right, Dayan, Eagler, and (a really really halfassed) Elbert.  I've cleaned up a few others for this, but I'll only post the stuff I worked on in full for this.
Battle stills
I've got waaaaay to many old stills lying around, so I'll just pick and choose the ones I like the most.

Ah, the times when simple edits for resemblance instantly made you a "master" spriter...

Drawn with vine charcoal

A mixed media piece.  I used India ink, acrylic, pastel, and magazine clippings for my materials.  My tools for this one were a brush, an inkwell pen, and a sponge.

Experimenting with Sun ink using different strokes and tools.

A couple pieces from a 3D animation class I had a few semesters ago.

And a couple pieces from my most recent 3D class.  Had to make a character reference for modeling.  And no, I'm not good with proportions.  Yes, I understand the basic human proportions, but applying them is tricky.  Yes, I plan on doing something about that.

Done for my first semester of 3D.  The better of my two 3D finals.

Out of Place

Done for the second semester, where we actually focused on making a character.  Yes, I'm aware that the voice may be a bit hard to hear; I was pressed for time and I'm not an audio technician.

TAT TV Bumper

This was for a motion graphics class; I had to make a channel bumper for the campus film dept's TV channel.  I like how it turned out.
And that's what I've got onhand.  I usually update my blog with most of my new work (save for sprites and fanart; that goes in the Photobucket), and the accompanying Youtube channel, which I think you can find easily enough.

Gaming / Fire Emblem discussion
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:39:39 PM »
For anyone who's unaware, today marks the 20th anniversary of Nintendo and Intelligent System's medieval strategy RPG series, Fire Emblem.  The game has seen eleven titles in these years (twelve if you count the Broadcast Satellite FE title), and I think a general Fire Emblem series discussion thread is a good way to celebrate.

Lets start with speculation; could it be possible that Ninty and IS would announce a new installment or classic remake at this year's E3 to commemorate this event?

I personally would be ecstatic to see one announced in any shape or form (localised imports on the VC, perhaps?), but have my doubts.  Nintendo's got a lot of new entries in their big franchises (Mario, Metroid, Zelda, Pokemon) to talk about this year, so any Fire Emblem announcement might be met with underwhelming reception, short of a FE6 remake for the Roy fans.

Thoughts?

Gaming / Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon
« on: November 08, 2008, 07:36:54 AM »
It's out in Japan, and due out in Europe in less than a month's time.  North America will have to wait a while longer, as there's no solidly-established release date yet (speculated to be in the first half of 2009).

That being said, the game is a remake of the very first Fire Emblem, released on the Nintendo Entertainment System.  This means that after a long wait, gamers outside of Japan finally have a chance to witness Marth's story in action.

Some new features appear in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon that haven't appeared in any previous Fire Emblem titles.  These include Save Points (creates a permanent save one time in a chapter so you don't have to restart from the beginning in case someone dies) and Class Change (change a characters class to another, such as turning Cavaliers into Myrmidons).  The game also features an online mode where players can purchase items from a special shop, or compete with each other in a two person pvp match with small groups from their in-game teams.

As usual, however, the die-hard Fire Emblem crowd has come to dislike a lot of the name changes in this title, based on how long they've gone with the fanslations.  An example of one of these name changes includes Sheeda/Shiida becoming Caeda (probably pronounced Ceeda, if you're up to date on your latin).  I personally don't get what the big deal is over these, as I've been looking forward to the official US names for some time now.
