Gaming / Iwata Asks: Wii Sports Resort (Hilarious Roundtable)
« on: July 08, 2009, 12:00:18 AM »
Well then, with Wii Sports Resort about to make it's huge splash in all territories, the Iwata Asks panel this time is going to be focused on the people in charge of making and programming the game as well as the hardware guys in charge of making the Wii MotionPlus add on. It's a great read in and of itself, however, the min reason I'm putting this up now is because of a few hilarious remarks about the history of the development as well as general Shiggy HAHA and Nintendo work ethics. XD

For example:

Quote from: Presentations of Wii Sports Resort to the Boss
Shimamura: What’s more, we had to give a presentation, a kind of progress report, once every few months…

Iwata: The dreaded progress report! (laughs)

Shimamura: “Dreaded” is exactly the right word! (laughs)

Yamashita: He (Miyamoto) makes each person stand for an hour.

Iwata: He makes you stand? (laughs)

All: (laughter)

Yamashita: In order to explain games currently in development in front of Miyamoto-san…

Iwata: He gets you to stand up to give these explanations.

Yamashita: Yes, he certainly does. (laughs) Each person has to go through about an hour with Miyamoto-san saying “That’s no good” and us saying “I see… I see…”

...

Shimamura: Anyway, as H-san was overseeing archery, he was incredibly good at it. Normally he would have no problem in hitting the bulls-eye time after time.

Yamashita: But during the progress report meeting, when he was demonstrating archery, he was shaking really badly.

Shimamura: If you looked at the screen, you could see that he wasn’t able to hold it steady at all. I’d never seen anyone shaking so bad before when playing the game so I said: “You’re shaking!” He replied: ”It’s nerves!” (laughs)

All: (laughter)

Yamashita: Then after having it pointed it out to him, the shaking got even worse.

Shimamura: The arrows were flying all over the place. I wonder if the Wii MotionPlus is the world's first device that's able to detect whether someone is nervous.

Iwata: (laughs) So did he get through that nerve-wracking presentation without Miyamoto-san giving him the thumbs down?

Shimamura: On that occasion…

Yamashita: As you might be able to guess, Miyamoto-san did indeed give him the thumbs down!

All: (laughter)

Yamashita: But following that, it improved greatly.

Or:

Quote from: President's Orders
Yamashita: Originally, there were 12 sports, each of which had several modes available.

Shimamura: We had thought that this was sufficient in terms of the game content on offer…

Yamashita: But then there was the suggestion to consider adding another mode.

Iwata: Who was it who made that suggestion?

Yamashita: Well, it’s not something that a member of the team would have said. Of course it was... (laughs)

All: (laughs)

Miyamoto: It was you who said it, Iwata-san: "Add another one!"

Iwata: What?

Miyamoto: I told everyone that the President had said there still wasn’t enough game content and asked them what we were going to do about it.

Iwata: Now I get it… (laughs)

Yamashita: Well, it was a direct order from the President, so we didn’t have any alternative.

Shimamura: You’ve got no choice but to do it.

All: (laughter)

Iwata: Irrespective of what I may or may not have actually said! (laughs) What new modes did you add?

Shimamura: We added skydiving.

You can read the rest here and discuss or (more than likely) have a good laugh at some of Miyamoto's sly ass ways. XD

Gaming / The Official Super Mario Galaxy 2 Discussion Thread
« on: June 15, 2009, 06:06:56 AM »
Making a new thread since no one mentioned this new tidbit of news and the E3 thread needs to be locked soonish anyways:

Miyamoto: "Why I Spiked the Story From Super Mario Galaxy 2"

Quote from: Choice Quotes
LOS ANGELES — Super Mario Galaxy 2 won’t have as deep a storyline as its predecessor, says Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto.

Super Mario Galaxy, the 2007 game that marked the iconic mascot character’s first adventure on Wii, was notable for the fact that its narrative was much deeper than the series’ usual paper-thin, save-the-princess plot. But Miyamoto, in an interview with Wired.com at E3 2009, says he’s not a fan of putting story into Mario titles, and therefore he’s keeping the plot of Galaxy 2 to a bare minimum.

“I’d like to go with as little story as possible,” he said. “I’ve always felt that the Mario games themselves aren’t particularly suited to having a very heavy story.”

“I just feel that the Mario games are something that should be a much more bright and active experience,” he said. “With the Mario games, you don’t need to have such a complicated setting where you have these particular characters with complicated backstories that can weigh down the bright and fun feel of the game.”

Somewhat complicating matters is the fact that the director of the Mario games, Yoshiaki Koizumi, disagrees with Miyamoto’s story-free philosophy.

“Mr. Koizumi is the type of person who, whenever we’re working on a new Mario game, he always wants to bring more story elements into it, as he did with Super Mario Galaxy. But in talking with him this time, he agrees and feels that with Galaxy 2, there won’t be a need for as deep of a story,” Miyamoto said.

But does he really agree with his boss, or has Koizumi just been overruled? In an interview with Wired.com in 2007, Koizumi said that he’s been trying to sneak bits of story into Mario and Zelda games for his entire career at Nintendo, even as Miyamoto has been trying to keep them out.

I told Miyamoto about what Koizumi had said, and he looked slightly taken aback.

“He said that?”

“Yes.”

“Well, I put a stop to that at the beginning, this time,” he said, and for emphasis punched the air with his fist.

The bold made me chuckle.

Also keep in mind that [Yoshiaki] Koizumi, the current head of EAD Tokyo, is also the guy responsible for the added story/scenarios in games like Link's Awakening, Super Mario Sunshine, The Windwaker, and now Super Mario Galaxy. So what say you all, yay or nay to this? Also, this is the general discussion thread so feel free to leave any other interesting notes on Galaxy 2 here.

I'm keeping this one short due to browsing with my Wii. There is plenty of coverage on some interesting games like KojiPro's newest entry in the Metal Gear series (starring Big Boss + Cyber Ninja Raiden) along with unexpectedly awesome No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle scans, gameplay info and art ([tornado fang] YEA DUAL WIELDING COMBO CRAZY TRAVIS).

Note From News Reporter Jelly

Welcome one, welcome all to the main event! I'll be your humble nerd host today as we take one last bit of time this weekend to get ready for what a lot of people have described to be the true return to form for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3 for short. In this short amount of time, news from all over the gaming spectrum will be shown off and much to the delight of many salivating gamers the majority of it will be coming in the form of new and previously unheard of developments. What sort of things do we have to look forward to you ask? Don't ask me that, just stick around and see for yourselves!

As is the now tradition of my RPM mega threads, I'll be continuously monitoring things and updating sections as news breaks out from the various facets. I will ask for member help (mods too) in terms of keeping things running smoothly in terms of the relay of info, because hey, I still have IRL things to deal with as well. Hopefully nothing will get in the way, but if I have to take a leave for a bit, I leave it all in your hands. (Viewtiful Ben, Taiyo, PB, & Vixy, since you guys are the ones that frequently get involved with these threads, that's your shout out.)

Final notes from me on this all: we all know that the info will be dissected many different times in the post E3 days or even during the announcements. I'd like it if anyone who feels like a separate thread is required, no mandatory for a specific announcement would please leave a link to said thread in here so I can create a link archive on this OP post. Thanks for your cooperation. The second bit of info is more of a general warning. Console and brand warriors, please do not take the opportunity to oust yourselves as such as there will be consequences and we will laugh at you. RPM has been incredible in regards to this though as I doubt I've ever seen fanboys/gals of the bad kind posting flame bait around these parts. Everyone gets along so well, still this must be said. Now then with that all said, it's time for RPM to do what it does best and sit back, crack jokes, relax, and enjoy yourselves. 8)

Gaming / Metroid Prime Trilogy Pack Coming Aug. 24th
« on: May 22, 2009, 09:48:55 PM »

Quote from: Kotaku
Surprise! The rumors that all three Metroid Prime games would receive a compilation release in the US with the "Wii-applied" control scheme were true.

This might come as a blow to Metroid fans who were really looking forward to a fourth game; however, Nintendo of America makes the point that not everybody who owns a Wii owned the GameCube. They consider this a chance for everybody to get on the same Metroid page at the cost of only one game as opposed to having to shell out for Corruption and the Wii-released Prime and Echoes. And before you start flinging cans of soda and empty chip bags at your computer screen, the control scheme is actually pretty fun.

Oh, and there's multiplayer, too.

What Is It?
Metroid Prime was released for the Wii in Japan this March, while Metroid Prime 2 will be out later this year, both with new Wii controls replacing the original GameCube ones. Rather than simply porting those titles, however, Nintendo has decided to do American audiences one better by combining the Wii-released games with Metroid Prime: Corruption for a compilation release.

What We Saw
I visited Nintendo's offices to play through the very beginning of Echoes just to see how the Wii controls stacked up and then dove into four-person deathmatch multiplayer.

How Far Along Is It?
Metroid Trilogy is due out August 24, so I'd say fairly final.

What Should Change?
Nothing New, Really: Don't get me wrong – the control scheme certainly makes Prime and Echoes feel different. But there isn't any new content added to any of the games, which could be a real bummer to people who already shelled out and played through all three games.

Not A Seamless Experience: When you load up Metroid Trilogy, you can access all three games from a hub individually. You don't have to beat Prime to unlock Echoes or finish Echoes to play Corruption and what you do in one game doesn't have an impact in what you do in other games. You could even play like 20% of Echoes and then double back to Prime whenever you got bored. It's convenient, I suppose, but I think it makes the plot feel disjointed. Or, you know, unimportant since they're not trying to preserve continuity.

What Should Say The Same?
The Wii Controls: They feel good, they play well and they cut back on some of the menu selection and scan point operation tedium. For example, to select the scanner, all you have to do is hold down the minus button to pull up a heads-up display. From there, you just point at the item you want to select it and then point that item at whatever you want to scan – very painless and very quick, which is going to make it easier to absorb what story there is through scan points.

The Multiplayer: The multiplayer from Echoes is back and immediately accessible from the hub with no gameplay prerequisites. It's a little sad that it's local-only four-way-split-screen, but there is something to be said for having four people flailing around with Wii Remotes trying to shoot each other or drop bombs and bounce to safety while in ball form. Also, you can totally screen-watch to see who just picked up invincibility and thereby avoid making a tactical error in attacking them.

Myriad Tweaks: Trilogy supports 16:9 widescreen. They've added bloom lighting to all three games. Doors open faster. Loading times are faster. Samus can now do that ball-form jump where she drops a bomb and – with a well-timed Wii Remote flick – get extra air when it goes off in all three games. It might not seem like any one of these things really matters, but altogether, the tweaks go a long way toward making the games feel good and play well.

Tweaked, But Not Too Much: Nintendo says the tweaks to the control scheme don't compromise the difficulty in the game and that they've preserved the puzzle element in all the games. I believe them, because Samus' ball-form jump from Corruption could in theory wreck some jumping puzzles from Prime and Echoes. But during my hands-on time with Echoes, I didn't feel like anything had gotten easier. It just got prettier; and while that made it a little less frustrating in difficult jumping sections, it wasn't less challenging.

Collectibles Give Old Hands Stuff To Do: Throughout all three games, you can pick up different colored badges to buy collectibles like a Mii bobble head for Samus' dashboard in her ship or unlock the game's original soundtrack.

Final Thoughts
I'm pleased with Metroid Trilogy. I like multiplayer and I like getting three games for the price of one. I wish that Nintendo were using this time to make a sequel instead of remake some classics. But at least they're doing them well. And if nothing else, I can easily delude myself into thinking that Trilogy is just a way for Nintendo to clear its throat braving a Metroid Prime 4.

Discuss. Also, I'll bite only if an art book is mentioned... Oh who the hell am I kidding, I'm probably gonna wind up selling the individual games I already have and buy this when it releases. XD

Gaming / The "Create an Awesome Game Trailer" Thread
« on: May 20, 2009, 07:33:36 AM »
Inspired by a thread over at GAF, I thought this would make for a fun thread. The premise is to create a game trailer with text that would, in your opinion, result in mass happiness for gamers everywhere. You can create them for sequels to your favorite games or even as how you would do current games that might deserve a trailer. Also cult favorites and mainstream megahits all get a chance to shine under the sun here. So with that all said, let's have at it!

And just so you get an idea of the thread, here's a fairly lengthy one I did for Jet Set 3:

Quote
Alternate teaser idea from my first one:

A television set turns on and the programming seems to be the norm, nothing unusual. Suddenly, the "show" you were currently "watching" goes to a commercial break, where you are greeted to a rather eccentric figure with dreads smirking towards the audience. He flips a switch on the control panel in front of him.

You now see a scene of a normal moment in cel-shaded New York City (Times Square, Bedford-Stuyvesant), Paris (The Eiffel Tower), Venice (Italy), Amsterdam, Tokyo (Shibuya & Akibara; Japan), Sydney (Australia), Johannesburg (South Africa), Mumbai (India), Hong Kong (China), Kingston (Jamaica), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Central Area (Singapore), and Quezon City (Philippines). The universal sounds of hustle and bustle about a city are your only background sounds for most of this quick montage.

The screen then transitions back to our eccentric host. He asks the audience a question:

"Tell me all mah underground brahs and sistahs, what do all of these places have in common?"

The screen does another quick transition where we see all of those places again, but now the camera is picking out some younger looking individuals, 1 male and 1 female per locale, all of whom are noticeably getting into position. For what? We aren't sure yet.

On the screen transition to the Japanese side of things, we see two people wearing distinct sets of roller blades on the top of a building with music faintly playing in the background. The screen transitions to them tying their laces without showing their faces. One dons a yellow shirt and the other dons a green hoodie.

We go back to our eccentric host only to be greeted with a very sly and confident grin.

"Find out soon when Jet Set goes live..."

Suddenly, we get a group shot of the different characters, each from their own different world, culture and with their own unique characterizations and appearances collectively put one foot forward revealing similar blades to what our Japanese duo were wearing.

Screen goes to black. You hear Professor K scratch out "Jet Set Studios" and see the logo appear. Wii + Compatible with Motionplus + WiFi Connection/360 + Live/PS3 + PSN Online logos appear under the game logo.

Cue awesome Naganuma opening clip. Cue our Japanese duo grabbing some nearby paint cans jumping off the side of the building.

*COMING SPRING 2010*

*Commercial ends*

We now return you to your regularly scheduled presentation.

Trade Used Games at Walmart

Does it sounds so strange? Not really when you think about it, this is Wal-Mart after all. Most people are unaware at the moment, but Wal-Mart is now accepting used games to trade for credit.

Just a few hours ago, I went to the one near my house and was quite surprised at what I saw. Apparently they had a installed a new vending machine less than a day ago which allows you to trade in your used PS2, PS3, X-Box, 360 and Wii games.

The machine looks extremely similiar to the Redbox DVD rental machines. When I went to use the machine, however, it still had more than a few bugs that need fixing. The first issue occurs right after you login. When logging in, you are asked to scan your games. However once you do so, there is a glitch that logs you out immidiately entering your information. After you log back in, the issue seems to repeats itself.

An additional issue is that it seems that the machine is unable to scan games. I took a few of my games to test it out. Final Fantasy 12, Godfather 2, Mirror's Edge, Ractchet and Clank, Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando and Burnout 3: Takedown. However one game, Mirror's Edge, did indeed get scanned but i got a pop-up message which stated that game was not in its database.

In the end, all the bugs and glitches prevented me from trading in any of my games and customer service was closed at the time so I was out on my own. But still, if there is one business out there to give Gamespot some competition, it's the giant Wal-Mart. We'll be writing further on the issue about why we think Wal-Mart has the power to steal Gamestop's limelight in the used game market.

Gaming / The Moving Memo Pad Thread
« on: May 15, 2009, 08:50:53 PM »
System: Nintendo DSi
Developer: Nintendo EAD Tokyo
Available: Now in JP; TBA in US/EU

What is the Moving Memo Pad you ask? It's a small app created for the DSi that allows you to create custom animations, drawings, video recordings, a mixture of all three and other things and share them with one another through the DSi WiFi connection. You can also export these small (or large depending on user) animations through the internet or export them to SD memory cards as your standard gif files. Things like this are perfect for people who might wanna dabble in their own user created content or just need a little distraction on top of their gaming. Every now and then, you can send your animations in to Nintendo and the best ones get featured.

Watch a Tatsunoko animator using the app here.

I think this thread would be a great place to share either your own (once NoA gets to releasing it here of course -u-') or awesome ones you've seen on the net like these:

- Dedede's Hungry
- Falcon Punch!
- Peach Likes 'em Big

SEGA SAMMY CONSUMER HARDWARE ROADMAP (WORLD EXCLUSIVE REPORT PART 1)

- 05/11/09

Today we would like to present to you part 1 of our world exclusive report in which we shed light on SEGA SAMMY's plan for a HD casual system in development since 2007 and scheduled for worldwide release for the holiday season of 2010.

History

At the end of 1999 SEGA held a press conference where they laid out their hardware ambitions and talked extensively about broadband and a whole host of future technologies. Shoichiro Irimajiri was stated here as saying that SEGA would strike back with a vengeance in the next millenium. By Spring 2000 Irimajiri-san was already tasked with heading the development of SEGA's next console, Irimajiri was stated as saying that it would be a joint venture with numerous companies because the future box would do more than just play videogames thus they had to partner with cable companies, telecommuncation companies and Hollywood conglomerates. The aim for the design was a single chip solution measuring in at 250 million transistors ready for a Q4 2004 worldwide release. What is not known by the mainstream is that SEGA at this time was also in early stages of development for a 3D handheld which was to be based on the chip that went on to be known as the MBX developed by Imagination Technologies PowerVR division. The PowerVR MBX hit silicon in 2002 about the time SEGA had initially planned on launching a new Game Gear. This device would have beaten the PSP to market by 2 years. All of these plans where scrapped however by Isao Okawa who foresaw a software future for the company, the rest of the company however where vehemently against the idea of software only.

Fast forward a few years to early 2003 when Hideki Sato and the rest of SEGA's high level executives were desperately in search for either a merger or even a sale of the company. The discussions where being held with Sammy, Namco, EA and Microsoft. Again what is not known to the general public is that the reason for SEGA's desperation was that at this very moment SEGA had yet another system in development which had a worldwide target ship date of Q4 2005. This system would have competed against what went on to be known as the XBOX360 and Sony's PS3. The system was designed around a PowerVR Series 5 GPU and an unknown CPU, using standard DVD it was to be a cost/performance solution targeting a $300 launch price tag whilst simultaneously incorporating equal 3D throughput as the higher priced offerings by the competition. SEGA and Imagination Technologies on the 18th of March 2004 released a press release regarding the development of the chip for arcade use. Come Jamma 2005 when the world was expecting SEGA to unveil it's PowerVR based arcade board everyone was shocked to learn of the LINDBERGH which was basically a PC tower with an nVidia 6800GT and a Intel Pentium 4 3GHz Prescott. Whatever happened to the PowerVR based integrated silicon arcade board? Simple, the console that was to be based on the arcade board was scrapped by the newly formed SEGA SAMMY. With no console counterpart for the arcade board it wasn't financially feasible to spend tens and indeed hundreds of millions of dollars on integrated silicon thus SEGA quietly without telling anyone just took a mother board and slotted in components from a mid range PC from 2004 and called it "LINDBERGH". The PowerVR Series 5 whose development SEGA funded lived on however as the PowerVR SGX series of mobile GPU's. The Series 5 architecture was designed to be highly scaleable, low end parts for mobile phones and high end parts for arcade boards and consoles, unfortunately the world never got to see the performance of the higher end variants.

So to recap -

There was a next gen system in development in 2000 which was scrapped by owner Isao Okawa and there was a next gen system in development in 2003/2004 which was scrapped by Isao Okawa's friend and new owner Hajime Satomi.

Present and Future

With the Nintendo Wii hitting retail and gaining worldwide superstardom of the likes never witnessed SEGA SAMMY once again immediately got to work on another system with orders from the boss himself Satomi-san. This system shall be a HD casual console and is designed to compete with the successor to the Wii. The design of the system FGN can officially confirm was finalised in late 2008, it's arcade variant goes by the name "RINGEDGE" the specifications of the system are as follows.

The chosen CPU is the Intel Pentium E2160 Allendale 1.8GHz Dual-Core Processor, the GPU of choice is the Shader Model 4.0 compliant 9600GSO with 384 MB GDDR3 RAM, System memory measuring 1GB DDR2-800. Other features include an onboard HD audio DSP, 32GB SSD, standard DVD, and WiFi connectivity. SEGA SAMMY plans on shipping the system with two controllers, a motion sensing remote and one which looks similar to the Saturn 3D controller. One for casual gaming the other for non-casual. To top this off SEGA SAMMY shall be using a stripped down version of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Standard 2009 for ease of development. This particular version differs from the standard version where only the DirectX functionality is included, the standard edition costs $90 per shipping device. As SEGA SAMMY's version doesn't include the non gaming features SEGA SAMMY has managed to get a hold of the OS for less than half of that cost.

SEGA SAMMY plans on launching the system in time for the holiday season of 2010 for no less than $200 and no more than $250. The company doesn't plan on publically acknowledging the project this year, thus an official announcement won't take place until 1H 2010.

Stay tuned for part 2 of our world exclusive where we shed light on SEGA SAMMY's consumer plans for the "RINGWIDE"

I. WANT. TO. BELIEVE. *Mind asplode*

Also, Jet Set Radio 3 on launch day or bust. XD

EDIT - Woah, I forgot the source and notes on this one as well. XD

I guess the hype was blinding. Anyways, the stuff before the supposed new console specs actually shed some light on some very interesting developments. And of course, here is your source. I'm kinda skeptical since I haven't heard about these guys before, but dammit I want to believe. XD

SEGA faithful, we weren't looking at 9/9/09, but 10/10/10. It makes sense, it's the logical progression! XD

Apparently, there is a huge Pokemon video game announcement coming on May 10th during the Japanese variety show, "Pokemon Sunday". It's believed to be so by the fandom due to the large party balls colored gold and silver respectively on the ceiling of the show's set. More info to support this rumor being more than just that include CoroCoro and Nintendo Dream magazines having a big title to disclose right around that same time frame.

Credit for this information goes to GAF for bringing it to my attention and Bulbagarden for breaking the story.

So then RPM? What say you? 8)

Article Here

So then, looks like a bit of info has just been leaked from Nintendo. What I found most interesting in this article (besides a possible English Wii no ma coming around soon) is the idea that all of Nintendo's planned developments and releases for the first half of 2009 were all held onto for additional development.

So then what does RPM think, PR to cover their collective ass or genuine truth, especially with the advent of MotionPlus coming ever faster? And then there's Wii-no-ma itself which looks crazy inventive yet weird coming from Nintendo of all people. With all of this said, it's discussion time.

Gaming / The PSP is "Go?"
« on: April 29, 2009, 03:55:24 AM »
Quote
Details of Sony's oft-rumored revision to its PlayStation Portable may have been leaked a little earlier than the company was expecting, as chatter of the PSP Go! appears to have leaked a few days early.

According to the initially uploaded most recent episode of the "at1UP" podcast, Sony will soon be announcing the PSP Go!, with some of the web site's staff having already seen the device. The podcast describes the new hardware iteration as having "slide out" or "flip out" controls—presumably in the style of —as well as a larger screen.

The biggest point of contention among 1UP staffers appeared to be the name of the new hardware, lightly derided as "PSP Go exclamation point."

That episode has since been edited to remove mention of the PSP Go!.

If true, the description of the new hardware appears to jibe with previous rumored mentions of the "PSP-4000" which is allegedly planning to drop the system's UMD drive in favor of internal storage. With more and more PSP games going digital download only—and additional loose talk of in-store kiosks that would allow gamers to rip UMD games to a storage device—that particular rumor is starting to look more feasible.

Sony itself surveyed PlayStation fans on what features they'd like to see in a new PSP earlier this year, hinting at the possibility of built-in storage, a touchscreen interface and built-in keyboard.

The arrival of the new PSP hardware is expected to hit before the holidays, according to reports.

"We haven't announced any new PSP hardware and can't comment on rumors or speculation," an SCEA rep told Kotaku when reached for clarification.

Thanks to PJ and Mr. Wednesday for the heads up.

Update: 1UP has published its story on the new PSP, indicating that the new, UMD-less hardware will ship this Fall in Japan and North America, with Sony bringing 100 PSP titles to the PlayStation Store. The site also has an artists' rendition of what the new PSP Go! may look like.

Gaming / How To Quit Your Job Game Developer Style (Seizure Warning!)
« on: April 28, 2009, 07:11:25 PM »
Go here, play the game, laugh your ass off. XD

And for the love of everything, if you are seizure prone, do not play the game.

69
Now then, I don't know why it has to come to this, but I'm really not feeling like keeping low key with it anymore. Over the past few months that I've been here, I've come to love the individuals of RPM almost like a second family. Everyone here knows how much I value the site and what it primarily stands for, namely a good time and many laughs. Lately however, (and I'm really stretching things with the use of the word "lately" here) it would seem as though many a member seem to be demonizing one another, not even in the "Haha, this is kinda funny" way either. I'm noticing a certain trail of negativity, harsh words and general malice in the air. You might think it can't be detected, but it's very easy for me to see it.

This is your one and only warning. Stop it immediately. While I am not in any place really to make ban threats, trust me when I say that if you start stepping on the meek who won't speak up or can't and I see it, I will light a fire under your ass until you shape up or ship out. I am obligated to do this not even because of my RPM Moderator status but as a friend who sees another friend or friends doing truly questionable to downright dumb [parasitic bomb] and wanting to show them that their means and methods aren't doing anyone any favors.

Now then what does this all entail you ask? Since a golden few of you probably don't know [Martin Lawrence]"What the problem is"[/ Martin Lawrence], I'll break it down according to the top 3 things that have been sitting on me wrongly in current time:

1. Stop [tornado fang]ing bothering the RPM artists because you either can't comprehend that they (damn thankfully) do not have the same wavelengths, backgrounds, life experience, interests, or whatever else you do and as a result draw or sprite what they like and consider relevant. Fully clothed, fully nude, comics, ecchi, architecture, certain posters, certain characters, cheese... It does not matter what the hell their subject matter is so long as their posted works are not in conflict with RPM rules and regulations, and I will not tolerate the actions of the few of you who are attacking talented artists and perfectly normal human beings based on what they wish to draw. There's also this marvelous piece of advice I'd like to give the overly sensitive ones right now. Ready for it?

Ignore their thread. Believe it or not folks, when you click that thread after seeing something that you don't agree with, goes against your creeds or personal beliefs, or whatever else, there's a good chance that you won't like it again. In this situation, the courteous thing to do would be to say something along the lines of "While I dislike/disagree with what your subject matter deals with, I see that you have skill and respect that." The ninja smart thing to do would be to enter the thread, look, and if you don't like, leave without a word. Simple, no?

What I absolutely will not tolerate is:

Going into someone's thread and tell them to stop drawing what they want.

That's the most disgusting thing I think I've seen on this site so far. Would you like it if I came by one day, and for the sake of this argument, I saw you drawing "the same bloody thing for the thousandth time" and rather than respect that it's what you do and that you have proficiency with it, I took it upon myself to say stop drawing this nonsense?

I don't think so. Nuh-uh.

Ending this thought now, variety is the spice of life folks, and I'd much rather have:

- An Akira who's powers with the colored pencil are amazing regardless of humorous at most boob to belly ratios & subject materials
- An Asena who excels in conveying personality and vibrancy even when she claims she has none of her own
- A Sub Tank whose ability to draw with his [ray splasher] is unmatched on top of being a genuinely great artist
- An Acid who is unsure of his ability yet flawless in his own execution
- A Quickie who's comic animation style could be described as transcendent at least
- A Sky Child whose "cutesy animu crap", Notissimo works, Youtube videos, & etc. (which I admittedly need to catch up on) show that she has numerous raw talents that need to be further explored
- A Sparky who is constantly, CONSTANTLY showing his immense imagination through his works
- A Tsuyoshi who can make you smile... WITH SCIENCE!
- A Rad who likes big butts and cannot lie
- A Borockman who's just chill and draws what he likes, is on his mind, or otherwise and wants to improve

And the numerous other artists of RPM, doing what they do best which is creating an awesome spectrum spanning diversity instead of a uniform, bland and sterile site with artists who can't draw what they would like to for fear of an internet lynch mob coming for them.

Moving on now:

2. When you ask an artist for a request, do not [tornado fang]ing think it's a Drive-Thru. This is not McDonalds. Holy [tornado fang]. If an artist doesn't get to your request on time, it's not because they don't want to unless explicitly stated. They have lives just like us, problems just like us (and in this day and age I think everyone can relate to having problems of all kinds to deal with), and are not hired & legally bound to give you what you ask of them in spades at moment (X) or your money back.

Again, it's just common courtesy. If you leave a request with them and feel as though they may have forgotten (hey it's natural, no shame here) due to long periods of time passing by, just send them a tap on the back whenever they say that they're all ears or have extra time on their hands for art. Again, note what I said, "a tap on the back", not "Where the [tornado fang] is mah [parasitic bomb]?" Also, excessive pestering is one of the main ways to never get a request done ever. I sure as [tornado fang] know that when I put my future art up on display for you all that I'm never granting a request to anyone who can't understand that my time for accomplishing any given thing is variable and therefore not yours to make me do [parasitic bomb].

Finally we have:

3. Artist styles and habits. This is slightly related to 1 and yet not so much so. Example time!

- Artist A wants to do a greyscale picture of Subject A.
- Artist A does so and puts the image up for viewing as a standalone piece
- Random RPM art critic comes by and critiques a greyscale picture negatively or incorrectly for not being a color pic stating that "color pictures are the true judge of an artist's ability". (WAT)

What's wrong here folks? Continuing with this example, let's try something different (points ruler back at the blackboard):

- Artist A wants to do a piece on Subject A
- Artist A's work comes out well to them, they're proud of it but they dunno, they just wanna post it and see what people think, you know maybe get a review from another artist or a decent feedback from a "non-artist"
- Random RPM critic #2 comes by and goes, "Hey look, it's that person who gets drawn 10 hundred millionty times!" leaving no other worthwhile or halfway decent comments on Artist A's ability, style, or technique.

See a problem? I do. I hope enough of you do too.

Finally, although this one is purely a situational matter:

- Artist B draws a lot of their stuff similarly
- Artist B has never mentioned wanting to get better, needing tips on how to differentiate, etc. but maybe wants that information.
- RPM Art Critic 1 says "Sameface is same." (Admittedly, with our collective wit and cynicism at times, we might mean well but agree with how this is stated.)
- Artist B wishes to get better and is now hopeful for a decent criticism
- RPM Art Critic 2 comes by and says, "Hey, Artists A & C have the same style... I wonder who's tutorial they've been using."
- Artist B (unknowingly to the critics) is crushed

This one is more of a what if minus the paraphrased critic dialogue. Still I hope you all can see what kind of issue I'm trying to enlighten you to.

In conclusion, I really don't know why I felt so ruffled at this recent turn of events or why I had to say something. In most cases, I'd be content to just chill, be quiet and watch how things play out. I'd have my own opinions, my own observations, but I'd mostly be chill. I guess I just didn't think that it would be of service to anyone here as a friend to let these gloomy trends continue.

I hope you all see what it is I'm trying to do for you and maybe, just maybe, try to act even a little bit differently, maybe more considerately and respectful to one another. If we all can't be open minded and accept each others differences, can we at least agree to respect them?

If not, then I guess I'll just have to go with my original plan. :/

This is Jelly. Signing out.

Gaming / The Lost Arc of SEGA - An IGN Retro Look

Well since I didn't see this topic here earlier and I thought it was a really interesting read, I thought I'd share it with the RPM community.

Article

You know what I thought was a bit of a mind blowing revelation coming all these years later? As it would so turn out, Nintendo & SEGA actually helped to give birth to the monster that was Sony Playstation line:

Quote
"We got together with [Sony] and defined what we'd like to see in our next hardware. We had this great idea that it should be a joint SEGA-Sony hardware system. If we had to take a loss on the hardware (which was the norm then), we'd split the loss on the hardware, but we wouldn't split software, so any software they did, they'd get 100% of the profits, and any software we did, we'd get 100% of the profits. It seemed like a fair deal since we were eons ahead of them in terms of software development."

"So we go to Japan, and Sony management liked the idea. Then we went to SEGA, and Nakayama hated the idea. [laughs] So that was the end of that, and the rest is history once again. Those were the specs that became the PlayStation." -- Tom Kalinske

Just a simple topic really. What are some of your favorite self contained parts of games that make you giddy in the nerd part of yourself to play/replay?

I have a few, but since I'm typing this offa my Wii right now, I want to keep it simple.

The Center of The Universe & Melty Molten Galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy are distilled essence of amazing for me.

With the month until E3 mark just around the corner, I thought it'd be quite an interesting idea to start this thread.

ITT: We discuss, rabidly speculate, leave information, and just have a general good time thinking about what we could expect from this year's "Return to Form" E3. After the last two "meh"-a-ton E3s (minus the amazing FFXIII 360 announcement & execution of said announcement 8D) and the unlimited spring of hype and hush (glares at Nintendo) around this year's event, you could say that one wants to be cautiously optimistic, but in my case, since "I'M 200% [chameleon sting]ing OPTIMISM" (Patent Pending), I expect great things from this, no matter what they may be! XD

As is the custom for my manic info threads, I'll update & organize this OP with more fanciful & tasteful means when I get the chance to do so. Feels free to contribute any news articles circa this year from 1-1-2009 until the current day that could help us out with what to expect from E3. In the meantime, feel free to get down with your fellow gamers ("casuals" & "hardcorez" 8D), fanboys & fangals and join us on the road to madness E3 2009! 8)
