Hot off the trails of another popular kickstarter, the cool guys and gals at WayForward have started their own in the hopes of funding a brand new adventure for the whimsical, shimmying genie from Seaquin Land.

The current funding amount asked is $400K, but as always everyone who's interested should always "aim big". Those stretch goals look fantastic. So do the right thing guys, support belly dancing, Metroidvanias and WayForward today!

Hot off the heels of the immensely successful #PS4noDRM campaign spearheaded at NeoGAF and referenced directly by high ranking SCE officials, a new campaign has started after the confirmation that Microsoft's Xbox One would now be coming to all regions with no regional locks. The target? Nintendo. As it stands, Nintendo is now the only console maker that still mandates this old practice whether by precedent or by willful choice. As such, gamers have already begun to make their voices heard much like the aforementioned anti-DRM campaign asking for Nintendo to comply with this one request -- the removal of region locks and regional locked content on their eShops, Wii U console and 3DS handheld console.

With that being said, I've decided to spread the word because this is yet another good thing and worth the exposure. Participation in this is simple as always. For those of you with a Twitter account, use the hash tags #EndRegionLocking and #NintendoRegionFree, and follow @EndRegionLock.

Tweet at:
@Nintendo
@NintendoAmerica
@NintendoEurope
@NintendoUK
@NintendoES

With a short (respectful and well written) message supporting your stance on a region-free Nintendo software market (or just the two previously mentioned hash tags). For those of you who want another additional method to raise awareness and are in possession of a Wii U, take to Miiverse now and use your eloquence or your artistic ability to present the "End Region Locking" message to your fellows on Miiverse. I suggest using high traffic places like the Smash 4 Miiverse page or the Nintendo e3 Miiverse thread. There you will find many other messages in this vein and can "Yeah!" them for maximum visibility.

For the driven here, you can feel free to repost this in other net communities or forums you frequent and drum up the interest in this from whoever wants to participate. There is NO such thing as a bad turnout here, only cold feet which is the bane of these things. Simply tweeting it out or Miiversing it up is already enough to show that you are in strong support of this. Let's do this RPM.

I hope no one minds me sticking this.

So, after reading this:

Of course I'd like to work together with Nintendo to make original games going forward. But as far as Nintendo franchises, the reality is that these are big franchises that have lots of fans and lots of history and it'd be really hard in my position to say 'Oh, let me make one of these games.' But tomorrow, if suddenly somebody came to me and said "We want you to make Star Fox," of course I would be pleased. So Star Fox is one, another series, Murasame Jō. I grew up on Nintendo games so there's a whole lot of respect for those.

Source

And hearing of the multiple times over the past few years where Hideki Kamiya (of Devil May Cry 1, Viewtiful Joe 1, Okami, and Bayonetta fame) has name dropped these two franchises as ones he would love to work with Nintendo on, I had a bit of a funny idea come to mind. I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking this idea is interesting, so why not gently nudge @Nintendo on twitter with a show of interest from the fans?

Keep in mind, this is not a "OMG LETS GO BATSHIT BECAUSE ITS HAPPENING" deal. This is just a small  attempt at showing Nintendo that the interest is there.

Participation is simple. For those of you with a Twitter account, simply click "Retweet" on this particular tweet and you're on your way. If you would like to go above and beyond the call, try to get friends who are similarly interested in something like this happening to retweet the original message and spread the word!

Feel free to discuss either the article or my silly little attempt at a Twitter Campaign here.

And games that will make you say "Whoa"
There'll be some disappointment
And people who will vent how

Foreword

Another revolution around the sun later and we find ourselves on the cusp of what could be one of the premier E3 events for the new decade. As the current set of consoles begin to enter their twilight, many have begun to wonder what their successors are shaping up to become. With that in mind, the hottest topic for most folks is easily Nintendo's foray into that brave new era of home consoles with the Wii U. As its introduction last year left a lot more questions than answers in the gaming populace's mind, this year, which also happens to be it launch year, has promised to deliver many new revelaitions both big and small as to what makes it tick and why it is worth the attention. Of course with that all being said, there are still two other behemoths with intentions that have yet to be revealed but continue to move forward with haste. Will Microsoft and Sony have a next gen hint or two to drop this year? And what of the current crop of gaming devices and their releases? What new things will there be for us to see? Come and find out with us live.

Finally, we know that for whatever reason, there can be some instances where folks let this season of awesome over hype themselves. This can also lead to really bad calls in judgement. I will only ask that before you think about doing something stupid or potentially stupid, heed this rule:

No flaming, no trolling, no psuedo trolling, no fanboy agendas, and no riling up folks. It'd be best if you all just kept whatever thoughts you had along those lines to yourself.

With that all said, kick back, relax and have fun with the rest of RPM!

What's up fellow RPM members? It's been a while I know, but with less than a month to go before every gamer's favorite time of the year, I think it's about time that this thread make its annual comeback. At the same time though, what a strangely quiet year its been in gaming. As always, this thread is meant to talk about the steady trickle of information that happens between now and the main event because everyone loves a leak or juicy rumor or two. ;)

News Reel:

Nintendo

Microsoft

Sony

Other Parties (Sega, Capcom, Square-Enix, SNK, etc.)

Also, since there might be a few of you wondering what the times will be like for the E3 pressers this year, here's a lovely schedule courtesy of NeoGAF:

With that all said, come on in and share the news with everyone if you find anything you think it's worth it! :)

In my infinite attempts at playing junior/novice game developer, I've been entertaining a concept for a new Megaman series for a while now and thought of making this tread both to hear from you what you think of it as well as what kind of ideas you all might have for something new. I figured this place could use a good shot of optimism or just a new conversational piece and from there the idea for this thread was born. (Also, I recently started watching the 2003 Astro Boy anime, so that might also be a catalyst for this idea. XD)

Concept: It's basically Megaman/Rockman Generations but as an alternate or "Ultimate" universe (for all the comic book fans out there). Instead of containing elements of the franchise in different "portions" as per the hook of the recent franchise history celebration that was Sonic Generations, everything is integrated into one world similar to how Rockman Online handles blending elements of the Classic and X series together or how the EXE series took references and homages both direct and indirect from the same two series. This is done to an even higher degree for this idea though, making it so that the world explicitly revolves around Dr. Light and Dr. Wily specifically (although other prominent Doctors will get screen time as well). Characters prominent in all the various Megaman games get new roles and a new Ariga like look that comes closer to looking like the classic characters do in his style, see the Megamixes.

Gameplay: 3D Platformer with the "linear" design seen in the Super Mario Galaxy games. This is done to replicate the feel of the level flow from all the Megaman games that have existed thus far (that aren't Zero1 or the ZX series). There's a heavy emphasis on kooky Robot Master weapons that is one part Ratchet & Clank (takes inspiration from the different applications of its zany weaponry and weapons combat) and one part Vanquish (elements of high speed robotics and high emphasis on maneuverability; third person shooting controls it pointer controls can't be the norm). The levels are sprawling multitiered affairs taking place in a grand 20XX metropolis similar to the main city in the Astro Boy 2003 anime. At times, the levels will shift into highly dynamic 2D sections (further inspired by Super Mario Galaxy) where things go straight jump 'n shoot man status. Of course, these contained elements have the most challenging twitch platforming attributes to themselves.

Stages have multiple paths, a mini boss that's either a straight up mini boss creation or battle with a quirky miniboss or two, and many different things to do/smaller challenges you can come back to and try after completing them. Also, taking from Megaman X (the first game), doing certain stages first alters things that happen in the remaining stages.

Intro stage -> 8 Robot Masters (selectable from the jump) -> 2 Event Stages at the end of each set of 4 Masters defeated -> Wily Fortress Stages 1 - 5

Megaman in this concept has X's maneuverability/flexibility (everything minus flight & air dashes, this is done via Rush Jet for awesome Sin & Punishment 2 like sections or high altitude levels) but without armors. This is done to play up the lighter side of things, character design included. Not to mention, I'm a hopeless fan of Classic Rock'd design when Ariga's design is involved. :P

Scenario: The game takes place in a contained continuity that takes the aspects of every Megaman series (characters mostly) and blends them into a world that is one part Astro Boy one part Rockman Megamix.  The light hearted nature of the Classic series sets the tone of the game with Dr. Light and Dr. Wily being the big two roboticists of the 20XX world. Their rivalry angle still gets played up as it did in the classic series. All of the Robot Masters we've come to know and then some haven't come into major production [or perhaps this is a restart of sorts going from the first Rockman game in a different way to more original elements], although they will show up in hints for future installments. Wily, fed up with being in Light's shadow, decides to start up a "Robot War" with 8 new "Master" grade robots. Megaman is dispatched and you know how this part goes, so let's talk about how things are different below. In this scenario also, the robots (especially of the Master variety) are much closer to what reploids are in the main series as per X - Zero - ZX - Legends in that they think, feel, make decisions and grow on their own.

Art Direction/Character Design: Everything about this is much more subdued compared to the designs that happened from X onward. The idea is to hit a balance between cool and whimsical designs. Play up that the robots are robotic but at the same time, give the special ones room for flexibility with humanoid appearances and the like. On a more specific level, the art style has to look "modern Osamu Tezuka", something I feel has only been seen in the old school Legends artwork and of course the Rockman Megamixes, hence my constant love for Ariga's work on their designs. I see rivets and grooves everywhere, light armoring but overall robotic forms versus "human in disguise", and any number of wacky proportions for the different non humanoid Robot Masters. Cities look one part organic and one part Sanctuary Fortress (Metroid Prime 2). Humans have a similarly Ariga look but are much more casual in attire, as per depictions in the Classic series.

Music: Keep to the same style of bit tunes, no change to compositions, except add a lot more flair to them a la the Chiptune Rockman soundtrack.

Character Notes: Perhaps one of the biggest things about this idea from me, is the idea that I want to make one world/continuity where every Megaman character exists. It'd be a neat homage and the ideas I have play it up in a bit of a silly or whimsy like manner. The characters of the classic series, Megaman, Roll, Protoman, Bass, and their numerous robotic allies like Rush, Beat, Tango, Reggae, Treble, Eddie/Fliptop, would be the most prominent of the cast with roles true to themselves from the classic games. But then you'd have cool homages or alternate takes of other characters from the series after the classics.

For example, you'd have characters like the Guardians from the Zero series receiving a new softer Classic series look as they become a set of goofy sibling Robot Masters Light made (precedent is already here with Tornado Man & Splash Woman) after studying Rock for so long as Rock, Roll & Blues' younger bros and sister. In this idea, they'd generally be part of the "main" Light family and portrayed as much younger siblings to the first DLNs. Then you'd have a character like Zero who is portrayed massively different from his current canon incarnation. Basically, Wily builds awesome [tornado fang]ing robots, but something is always wrong with them, usually in regards to their personality. In Bass' case, he's overly rebellious and competitive. In this Zero's case, he's either a timid guy with a berserk button or someone with a defining tic. (Don't ask me why when I did this, I thought of someone who was campily serious about "justice" referring to it as if it were some manly creed or something like that). Bass is always seen halfway between concerned for his "special" younger brother, and amazed at his "stupidity". As a full circle homage though, he finds himself being a bro/cool with Megaman (but of course the Robot Master Guardians are kinda wary of him). Characters like the navigators would be in public works as robots keeping things organized and running well. Signas would be like the Police Chief or something, Dr. Cain would be a lesser but valued member of the scientific community for designing robots that aren't on Light or Wily's level but still manage to contribute well to their society. Dr. Doppler would be famous for being the first robot member of this community and backed by his associate Gate.

Branching a little bit into fanon but just for the sake of keeping up this "what if", you could also introduce later characters like Axl in a different way too. The idea I was rolling with was that sometime down the road in this continuity, a third doctor had risen to prominence, Dr. Cossack (derp). He brings Axl, the Giga City Reploids turned Robot Masters in this idea (Marino, Cinnamon, Massimo & Spider) as well as his own numbers to the fray with Axl proclaiming himself in childish fashion to be Megaman's rival as Cossack's personal masterpiece much to Light's accomplishment with Rock. Further taking things full circle, maybe there's an instance where Megaman, Zero, and Axl of this continuity become good friends or assist in a pinch situation. Also in this "fanon" section would be a robot that comes before Zero but after Bass in the Wily family named Rhythm. She'd be the foil to Roll where Light initially created her to compliment their household and she came up nice (although with a strange fascination for street fighting/fighters) and willing to help around it, Wily explicitly created her to organize the place, to which she always objects and finds herself sneaking off. Basically, Roll was cool with it even though Light never gave her a designated "task" as a robot, while Wily's all "I need a housework bot" and Rhythm's all like "[sonic slicer], please." XD

Going towards ZX, or thinking of human characters from the series, they could be seen in this community as different famous people. One idea I had was that the different Masters of both Wily and Light decent enjoy living life and have different hobbies, the biggest of which is watching TV and of course, on TV are different shows, like Tokubetsu/Kamen Rider likes starring the ZX protagonists. Girouette is a director who is responsible for most of these programs and the like. He's also responsible for pioneering a "new" kind of show in that vein which oddly resembles the StarForce series.

Speaking of the EXE style of things, don't think they went under appreciated. I was thinking that the human characters from that would be prominent as well, though I haven't thought up much regarding that. Same for the Legends cast.

Extra Notes: Above all else, this series is all about humor. So, imagine things like in-jokes, gags involving dramatic robot explosions only for them to do a "talking head" routine Ruby Spears cartoon style, Wily as a bumbling villain who creates godlike stuff but not without their own particular "hitches", interactions between characters that make snarky jokes to events that happened in the "main" or current canon, and the like. There's also stuff in their society that would be references to Capcom as a whole, like hearing about how Megaman enjoys classic cartoons like "Captain Commando", "Breath of Fire" and "Power Stone" Bass enjoys the "Devil May Cry" comic series, Roll wants to go see the "World Warriors" spar sometime, and Halloween reruns include Darkstalkers: [insert subtitle which is actually the Japanese title here]  movies.

Another one off funny situation I thought of was Zero meeting an Iris of this world and, being as awkward as he is, winds up doing various stupid things because he's crazy for her. This climaxes with her getting kinda wrecked during a Wily incident. She even gives him a "talking head" moment while her arm (totally detatched from herself) is rapping her fingers against the ground giving him a stern look for this one moment of stupid. She gets better though and hangs around the Wily side often, making everyone wonder why the hell she's there from time to time (because as the one nice robot among Wily's Numbers, something's definitely going to look out of place).

Of course, this isn't at all everything that could be, but it was a fun little side thought that I entertained and put some thought into. I'd love to see what you all would do for your own pet series if you had the chance, even if it might not be as elaborate as mine. So what say you RPM? What would your ideal series look like? Would it work into the current methods established with the Robot and Programming universes, be something like mine as a "in-between reboot"? Or would you do something else entirely? What genre would it be? Any hooks you'd want to push? Come on in and share your ideas!

The PlayStation 3 and Vita versions of Street Fighter X Tekken gain two more exclusive characters today - both Namco and Capcom lend their mascots to the battle, but in ways you might not expect... Yes, Pac-Man and Mega Man are indeed tossing their heads/helmets in the ring. These two join Cole (from inFamous) and the Kuro/Toro cats for a total of five Sony-exclusive characters on that platform. However, both 'Men arrive in altered forms, making their appearances in SFxT totally unique to this game.

If you're like me, you may be wondering, "w... why that version of Mega Man?" Well, in the spirit of crossover fun, the dev team wanted both Capcom and Namco's mascots to join the fray in a slightly silly, goofy way. Pac-Man riding Mokujin is about as weird as it can get, so the best equivalent for Mega Man would have to be the so-bad-it's-good-but-still-kinda-bad box art from Mega Man 1 in the US.

Make no mistake though, classic Blue Bomber Mega Man still has a future, and we have Top Men (not Top Man) on the case. December also marks the 25th anniversary of Mega Man, and we'll have more news in the future about our plans for the milestone.

OK, so this is going to be a strange thread if only because I was inspired to make it after deciding on a secret art project for Megaman's 25th I hope I'll get done as well as looking back on a terribly ancient fan fiction idea I had. (Yeah I know. XD)

It involves one of the more fascinating concepts left in limbo post conclusion of the Zero series in my opinion. I was thinking about the Ten Shining Weapons/The Shining Arms and wondering what kind of implications something like that would have on both the X series/story line from the era of the X games as well as the Zero series' lightly touched on prehistory. For those of you who don't know what this is, the reference here is to the weapons possessed by 10 heroes who were said to help end the fighting of the latter Maverick Wars/Elf Wars and thus the legacies of their owners. Of the ten, six were confirmed in the Perfect Works between good ol' Blue (X) & Red (Zero) along with the Guardians. If we stick to the canon presented though, the Guardians weren't present for the Elf Wars and gained the distinction for service to Neo Arcadia, whether it be from fighting as the city's defenders or for their help in revitalizing the world before reassembling in Neo Arcadia to serve as Guardians of Copy X and eventually the city itself.

Now of course this all lead to speculation at the time that Axl was going to get his dues retrospectively through this canon designation, after all with all the concessions and decisions made to accomodate the X series story lines post X6 and Axl's own rise to prominence as a hunter of similar rank to X & Zero as well as a reploid/robot of equally unique design, it would seem like this was a no-brainer for an entry. Between the decisive manner in which ZX's universe starts curtailing things and making its furthest direct reference point Zero 4 alone (Model Ws and Ragnarok) and ZX: Advent's complete denial of the Model A character sharing any lineage with Axl however, we're still left to wonder. (ZXA almost went as far as to suggest this character didn't exist previously with the powerful emphasis on Model A being intrinsically Albert's.)

Gotta admit, a part of me was hoping that ZX was going to be used as a proxy to play more with varied types of Rockmen/Megamen based on schematics of these particular figures and still earlier was a honestly "fantarded" wish that this meant the three surviving Resistance members from the Command Mission/Giga City incident (Marino, Massimo, Cinnamon) would come into play even more strongly in the X universe. They fit the molds for unique characters that could have also been adopted into Hunter ranks after their performance with the big 3 of the X series, it could work, right? XD

With that said, I'm kinda starting this thread to get an idea from the few remaining MMZ heads here on what kind of stuff you think should have made the cut for this series and why. X series fans are also welcome because there were so many strong links to various X series happenings, theories on how they connect are all just as interesting as things designated for the Zero series alone. Also, while this thread is started with the premise of talking about the story/plot line, there is also room for discussion on how the MMZ gameplay mold could have been added to or changed overall.

I'm one of the few people who feels like the series could have gone on longer with all the material they had to work with on both ends (though Zero 4 as a conclusion story would have taken place waaaay later), but I'm still satisfied with how things turned out.

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2011/12/miyamoto-interview/

Quote
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — The creator of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda will step down from his current position at Nintendo but remain with the company to work on smaller, more personal projects, Wired.com has learned.

In an exclusive interview with Wired.com on Wednesday, the 59-year-old head of Nintendo’s game design department said that he will move away from supervising the development of massive games like this year’s Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land, passing the torch to the younger designers in the company and working on projects that won’t take as long to complete.

“Inside our office, I’ve been recently declaring, ‘I’m going to retire, I’m going to retire,’” Miyamoto said through his interpreter. “I’m not saying that I’m going to retire from game development altogether. What I mean by retiring is, retiring from my current position.”

“What I really want to do is be in the forefront of game development once again myself,” Miyamoto said. “Probably working on a smaller project with even younger developers. Or I might be interested in making something that I can make myself, by myself. Something really small.”

Miyamoto said that he’s hoping to start work on a project in 2012, and hopefully show the game off publicly within the year.

“In other words, I’m not intending to start from things that require a five-year development time,” he said.

Miyamoto, whose creations propelled Nintendo to worldwide prominence beginning with 1981′s arcade game Donkey Kong and who is generally recognized as the world’s most influential and creative game designer, said he felt comfortable stepping away from supervising the Mario and Zelda games because his staff has done such a good job with this year’s critically acclaimed entries in both series.

“I’m saying this because I have a solid reaction from the existing teams,” he said. “I was able to nurture the developers inside Nintendo who were able to create something like this or something like that,” he said, gesturing to banners in the interview room in Nintendo’s office that showed the logos of Skyward Sword and Mario 3D Land.

The reason Miyamoto keeps telling the younger developers that he’s going to retire is to send the message that he won’t always be around for them to work with.

“The reason why I’m stressing that is that unless I say that I’m retiring, I cannot nurture the young developers,” he said. “After all, if I’m there in my position as it is, then there’s always kind of a relationship. And the young guys are always kind of in a situation where they have to listen to my ideas. But I need some people who are growing up much more than today.”

As for himself, Miyamoto seemed eager to get to work on his new ideas with a smaller, younger staff.

“Anyway, I’m interested in doing a variety of many other things,” he said with his usual cryptic smile.

Wired.com’s full interview with Miyamoto, including his thoughts on Skyward Sword, making Mario Kart 7 with a Western development team, 3-D gaming, cell phones and more on the future of games, will be published next week.

Crazy ass times we're living in when Miyamoto steps down from the second biggest "icon" to just another dev in Nintendo's stables once again, but this isn't entirely unexpected with Miyamoto close to retirement age and expressing a desire to relive his golden years as "just another developer." I'm excited as [tornado fang] to see what kind of change this brings about in Nintendo. What say you RPM?

Also, taking bets now, who says Tezuka takes the reigns from Miyamoto as big number 2 due to his longevity and equal amount of seniority in Nintendo?

Gaming / EVO 2011 Thread: World Warriors, Assemble! || July 29 - 31
« on: July 28, 2011, 07:52:46 PM »
Gonna try this as a bit of an experimental thread. I'm sure that for most of you, you all enjoy watching a good fighting game match or two. Now, I'm gonna extend an invitation to stream monster watch the best of the best go at it live in games including Third Strike: Street Fighter III, Super Street Fighter IV: Acrade Edition, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Blazblue: Continuum Shift II, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken 6.

Also of note are the many different panels endorsed by the big wigs of the fighting game community including two from Capcom showing off why Third Strike Online is aiming to be the gold standard for online fighting games and more on the hotly anticipated Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 with a live demo for the participants currently entered in the MVC3 events, Skullgirls' director and "Patron Saint of Combo Videos" Mike Z showing up to show how Skullgirls appreciates the past while embracing the new in a full featured modern package, Yoshinori "Poison" Ono shows up and details more on Street Fighter X Tekken, Capcom lets "Neo G", a guy whose resume spans the original Street Fighter II through the current fighting games SSFIV:AE/MvC3, out of the dungeon to speak with the community on designing fighting games (a must for anyone with a mechanics interest ;) ), and much much more.

For a more indepth listing of the event and venues to follow all the action, here's a NeoGAF Link done by regular USD.

For a brief writeup on what EVO is and why we're so hype for it this year, check out this thread also from GAF detailing a long list of the events both hilarious and hype that led up to this most anticipated finale.

So kick back, relax and let's get ready for the fights. :)

Hot on the heels of the unceremonious cancellation of the Megaman Legends 3 Project for the Nintendo 3DS, the internet is all abuzz with numerous instances of reports from Comic Con goers today stating that Megaman for all intents and purposes is a taboo subject around the Capcom booth. What initially started as a dubious 4chan post/reply has seemingly been corroborated by members of Capcom Unity forums with some people coming around and stating that they or people close to the main event have been asked to leave the area. In one such case, a person was asked by security to leave for donning a MM9 T-Shirt, in another situation a person was asked to leave over simple discussion of Tron's inclusion in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as trailers blared around the area, and in the one that started everything, a Tron cosplayer was asked to straight up not come anywhere around the booth.

This thread is meant for further discussion/fact checking on the matter. I had initially brushed everything off as internet nerd rage going haywire, but with many people stepping up to give this further credence, it would be stupid not to keep the fandom, and fans of gaming in general up to date on what is happening.

There'll be some gamers gloating
And minds will be floating

Yet Another Note From News Reporter Jelly

So RPM, I heard you liked video games. I heard you like hearing about the latest and greatest things coming from all sides of the globe in a giant audio visual cacophony the likes of which can only happen once per year. I heard you like to get hype, go crazy and most importantly have fun as all the big guys from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sega, Square, Capcom, Activision, EA, Konami, Atlus and countless others debut their wares and give us a glimpse into the future of this "little" hobby of ours. Well guys, with literally less than a day left until the beginning of this event, I think it's safe to say that E3 @ RPM is go. Welcome to the discussion thread and lounge for what may be the most interesting Electronic Entertainment Expo we've had in years. With two massive hardware launches in the wings, it's safe to say that there will be tons of material to talk about and speculate upon so for this incarnation of the lounge thread, I'd like to ask for help from both the members and mods of RPM to help fill in the massive amount of info that will be coming in from all sides while I try and keep this post up to date and organized for those of us who might have obligations that keep them from being constantly updated.

Finally, we know that for whatever reason, there can be some instances where folks let this season of awesome over hype themselves. This can also lead to really bad calls in judgement. I will only ask that before you think about doing something stupid or potentially stupid, heed these rules:

No flaming, no trolling, no psuedo trolling, no fanboy agendas, and no riling up folks. It'd be best if you all just kept whatever thoughts you had along those lines to yourself.

With that all said, kick back, relax and have fun with the rest of RPM!

Gaming / Tomorrow is E3! RPM Discusses & Speculates
« on: May 07, 2011, 10:39:49 PM »
Another year, another pre-E3 gathering thread and all of it headed by myself. How's it been guys? Anxious to hear more about that sleek & sexy NGP Sony's been reluctant to show more of? Hyped for some Microsoft shenanigans including new Kinect experiences and potential entries in the Halo/Gears franchises? Or are you ready to get your Nintendo cappuccino on with a blowout on Project Cafe, the next in a long line of Nintendo systems? With hundreds of new developments primed to hit the net in the next few weeks time, a lot of unknowns and uncertainties to current rumors and teases and numerous 3rd party announcements ready to drop at any given moment, this is the best time to be a gamer and enjoy our hobby. That being said RPM, this is our place for all of the dreams, the news that breaks between now and June 5th and most importantly, to have fun with our hobby. Let's do this. 8)

Inspired by a bit of dabbling in fighters I've done over the past few weeks, I figured since I haven't seen this topic around, it'd make for a fun discussion. What characters do you play or see played that make you really go "this is [tornado fang]ing cool" or just appreciate for how they work among a set cast?

Everyone here probably knows a lot about how much I like Marth in Smash Bros. Melee & Brawl and the reason is pretty simple. I love characters that have a straightforward design with maneuverability. The former allows me to understand what my option is to finish the job, while the latter gives me a sandbox to get to that end. In more traditional fighters, Makoto from Third Strike easily embodies everything I love about fighters in general. She's a no nonsense, "improvise, get in, rip [parasitic bomb] apart character" that isn't heavy on execution as she is on understanding positioning. Plus it looks so [tornado fang]ing cool when a Mak player really gets into it. XD

So RPM, now I pass the thought train on to you, who are your favorites and why? Also, the topic title is more of a suggestion than a guideline, although I'd really love to hear what you love most about the characters you pick in terms of how they play.

Shigeru Miyamoto has described the upcoming Super Mario 3DS as a cross between Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 64, and said that the eagerly anticipated title will be out this year.

Speaking in London today, Miyamoto told us: “It’s a combination of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario on N64. It won’t convey the message if I talk to you today, but if you play it at E3 that will give you more understanding of what I’m talking about.”

Most important of all was Miyamoto’s promise that the game is “completely original, and coming this year.”

“The tail you mentioned on the logo – it’s what you think it is,” Miyamoto said. “You probably know what’s going to happen using that character.”

Anime & Manga / OHMYF**ING GOD, NEW RUROUNI KENSHIN ANIME!
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:41:54 PM »
IMFUCKINGDROWNINGINTHEAWESOME:

Quote
The June issue of Shueisha's Jump Square magazine is announcing on Thursday that production on a new Rurouni Kenshin anime project has been green-lit. More information will be provided in future issues of Jump Square.

The magazine also noted that the Blu-ray Disc versions of the two Rurouni Kenshin original video anime (OVA) projects and the Rurouni Kenshin: Ishin Shishi no Chinkonka [Requiem] film will ship between August 24 and October 26. A compilation CD will ship on July 27. Rurouni Kenshin, Meiji Kenkaku Romantan Saisen, a new game for the Sony PSP system, already shipped last month.

Nobuhiro Watsuki's original 1994-1999 samurai manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump inspired a television anime series that is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. Viz Media published the manga in North America, and Media Blasters' AnimeWorks label released the television anime. ADV Films released the two OVA projects and the film under the licenser's prescribed title Samurai X.

Since he ended the Rurouni Kenshin manga, Watsuki drew Gun Blaze West and Buso Renkin. His current title, Embalming - The Another Tale of Frankenstein, has been running in Jump Square since the magazine's inaugural issue in 2007.

The initial series is my favoritest (yes, favoritest) anime ever and one of my top 2 mangas I've ever read. Hearing this is like a childhood dream come true, especially after finding out that the last animated arc was a completely original set of things. Dear God, the 13 year old in me has the stupidest and biggest grin on my face right now. [tornado fang] yeah, 2011. 8)

In short, to summarize every feeling I have currently in graphics:

Just as the title says honestly. I'm starting up a bit of an endeavor after putting it off for waaay too long now. I'm making a blog dedicated to housing some game design concepts and my musings in general. While there's nothing too lofty about the things I have going right now, I'd like to be able to present them in a manner that could lead to bigger things when I start putting things in motion. That all said, anyone here familiar with putting together a good web design or frequently works on setting up and maintaining a blog? I'd love to hear your thoughts. Actually, I'd love to hear what everyone thinks works best when it comes to websites in general. So RPM, think you can help Jelly out with this? :)

A pair of intriguing pages on VGMdb have been brought to light recently thanks to Cosake's rummaging detailing the existence of two Megaman/Rockman X albums, with both being backed by some serious talent. The first link details the existence of Mega Man XA and features the following guest composers:

- Yoko Shimomura (Street Fighter II, Front Mission, Super Mario RPG: Legend of The Seven Stars, Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana, Kingdom Hearts series, Mario & Luigi series, Xenoblade)
- Yoshino Aoki (Composer & Performer of Roll's Theme, working with Tetsuya Shibata of Darkstalkers, Power Stone, Resident Evil & DMC fame)
- Hitoshi Sakimoto (Tactics Ogre series, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII, GrimGrimoire, Odin Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon Blade, Valkryia Chronicles series)
- Manabu Namiki (Bleach: Heat The Soul series, Mushihimesama Futari, Odin Sphere, Trauma Center: Under the Knife, Gradius, Contra & CastleVania "Rebirths")
- Saori Kobayashi (NightS Into DreamS & Panzer Dragoon series)
- Masahiro Ando
- Noriyuki Iwadare (Grandia series, Lunar series, Megaman X7, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations, Radiata Stories)
- Koji Kondo (If I have to tell you what games, you haven't been gaming long enough to care about this album XD)
- Masashi Hamauzu (Front Mission: Gun Hazard, SaGa series, Final Fantasy XIII)
- Tsuneo Imahori (Trigun, Gungrave, Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bebop & Hajime No Ippo anime series)
- Masato Kouda (Wild Arms, Marvel vs Capcom)
- Masaharu Iwata (Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre series, Final Fantasy Tactics, Final Fantasy XII, Soul Calibur IV, GrimGrimoire, Odin Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon Blade)
- Yoko Kanno (WAAAAY too much to note, but specifically Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and cotributions to Wolf's Rain, Record of Lodoss War, Escaflowne series and Porco Rosso)
- Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Shadow Hearts, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Xenogears, Xenosaga Episode I, Xenoblade, Mario Party, Inazuma Eleven)
- Miki Higashino (Sudioken I & II; Gradius III, Contra III: The Alien Wars, Moon: Remix RPG Adventure, Vandal Hearts)
- Noriko Matsueda (Front Mission series, Chrono Trigger, Bahamut Lagoon, Tobal No. 1, The Bouncer, Final Fantasy X-2)
- Mari Yamaguchi (Mega Man, Breath of Fire, Ghosts n Ghouls series)

I don't know about you all but that's a godly amount of talent right there. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a separate listing for another album - Mega Man X Metal Arrange with the following contributors listed:

- Setsuo Yamamoto (Street Fighter Alpha, Mega Man series, Final Fight series)
- Makoto Tomozawa (Mega Man/X/Zero/Legends credits, Dino Crisis series, Resident Evil series, P.N.03)
- Yuki Iwai (Street Fighter Alpha series & III series, Ghosts 'n Ghouls series, Musashi: Samurai Legend under the Wavelink Zeal name with Takayuki)
- Yuko Takehara (Mega Man series, Final Fight series, Aladdin, Street Fighter Alpha, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Breath of Fire series)
- Toshihiko Horiyama (Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, Demon's Crest, Megaman series, Onimusha 2)

So what is this mysterious set of albums about and why is the guest list so impressive? Discuss and froth at the possibilities of what this soundtrack could become. 8)

[spoiler=The Story So Far...]After braving all of the individual perils, mishaps and trials of the Book of Eibon, Team Spartoi finally comes face to face with the final and most potent adversary, the warlock Noah, responsible for the kidnap of Death the Kid[/spoiler]

Well, chapter 80's out and I just figured I'd kick start a discussion on the other monthly shonen you should be reading. (The first was Fullmetal Alchemist, but it finished its run admirably earlier this year.) With Team Spartoi's finest up against my favorite mage and holder of the Master Ball Book of Eibon, things are starting to get a bit crazy in a way that would make the multiple climaxes of the Baba Yaga Arc proud. With that said, discuss.

NYTimes' Article: Japanese Playing a New Video Game: Catch-Up

Quote
“I look around Tokyo Games Show, and everyone’s making awful games; Japan is at least five years behind,” said Keiji Inafune, 45, head of global research and development at Capcom and one of Japan’s most prominent game designers.

“Capcom is barely keeping up,” he said in an interview at the show, which ended Sunday. “I want to study how Westerners live, and make games that appeal to them.”

Another year, another choice Inafune quote on how the east is sucking at making video games and glorious west is the only hope. Honestly, I just don't know what to say that I haven't said or made clear about how I feel in regards to this train of thought already, so I'm gonna save up some good discussion pieces and come back with a hell of a lot of good stuff to talk about tomorrow. Now RPM, I'd like to know what you think on the matter. Does it matter to you who is doing what better than the other? Is there a particular draw you have towards one type of game or the other? What helps or hurts that draw you may have to one side or the other?

For those of us who play on hard mode/are very invested in gaming and the game industry:

What is it about appealing to the west for an extra buck that has Capcom changing itself to such an extent and in the process trying to shed its amazing legacy all for the sake of appealing to this "ideal" market that may or may not pay off in the end? Why does Capcom feel as though incorporating more western philosophies into their game design means rejecting the quirks or personality given to them by being Japanese developers? Finally, how hard is it to create universal games instead of ones that pander to one side of the world's ideas of fun or the other's?

Bonus round: How come every time this silly "east is failing" vs "west is best" thing gets mentioned, Nintendo is never counted as a Japanese developer, but rather their own seperate entity? 8D
