Entertainment / George Michael Passes Away at 53
« on: December 26, 2016, 05:20:11 AM »
Quote from: CNN
British pop star George Michael, the musician who first shot to fame with the 1980s duo Wham!, has died, his family said in a statement. He was 53 years old.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," said the statement which was released by Britain's Thames Valley Police.
Wham! scored big with hits such as "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" and "Careless Whisper."
Michael went on to a successful solo career; his 1987 debut album "Faith" sold more than 10 million copies. Many of his hits with Wham! and as a solo artist, are still well-known decades later.

Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1609568567/code-hardcore-the-coolest-2d-mecha-battle-game

Late for the party since this game was just funded today and I just heard about this game a little while ago on Steam, but I'd like to share you guys and the mecha fans out there. Code: HARDCORE is an indie game that takes inspirations of run-and-gun games such as Contra and Metal Slug, the competitive gameplay of first-person shooters like Call of Duty (in their words), and the crazy and over-the-top cinematic action of Super Robot Wars. I know the devs mentioning Call of Duty being one of their inspirations behind this project might raise a few eyebrows, but going by the trailer, this game looks phenomenal. The combat looks very fluid, impactful, fun, and awesome to look at. You not only get to pilot mechas, you can eject and take the battle on foot; the game's single-player campaign mentions there will be stealth-based actions like hacking the enemies' mechas or sabotaging their base. There's not only an emphasis on competitive multiplayer modes, Code: HARDCORE will also feature a few single-player modes as well such as the aforementioned story campaign, an Arcade Mode, and a Survival Mode.

Although the game was funded, I'm hoping to see the Artbook, PlayStation 4 port (despite not having one myself), the extra mechas, maps, boss stages, the playable boss, and the Famous CV goals met while there are still 39 days left considering the overwhelming success their demo got.

I have a bunch of old game save data for Gameboy Advance games I was emulating with VisualBoyAdvance-M but I want to switch over to RetroArch's mGBA core since it has more features and improvements that VisualBoyAdvance-M doesn't have like adjusting sunlight with the solar sensor for Boktai. The save files from VisualBoyAdvance-M are *sav files and I was wondering if there's a way to convert them to *srm files for RetroArch to use.

Gaming / Them's Fightin' Herds - What Once was MLP: Fighting is Magic
« on: September 26, 2015, 09:19:44 AM »

- http://shoryuken.com/2015/09/21/from-ponies-to-something-more-mane6-talks-thems-fightin-herds-development-crowdfunding-and-more/

Some of you may have heard of this story: a group of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fans called Mane6 wanted to make a fighting game based the popular TV series with the Fighter Maker 2K engine (same engine that was used for Tomoaki Sugeno's Vanguard Princess), but like some of these fan-made games, due to trademark laws Hasbro filed a cease-and-desist order against the devs. Despite Mane6's effort to get special permission from Hasbro to continue development of the game, the game ultimately had to be abandoned. It didn't end in complete despair, however. Lauren Faust, famed animator (who also enjoyed Fighting is Magic) whose resume includes working on The Powerpuff Girls, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Wonder Over Yonder, the Super Best Friends Forever shorts, Cat's Don't Dance, The Iron Giant, and of course, Friendship is Magic, decided to help Mane6 in creating new original characters and story for them. Following this was Lab Zero Games, after having been laid off by Reverge Labs and looking into IndieGoGo to continue Skullgirls' development (which went pretty well), included a stretch goal that would allow Mane6 use the engine that they use for their Skullgirls, and said stretch goal was met by a generous $2,500 donation. So, here we are, Mane6 took the remnants of My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic and reformed it into Them's Fightin' Herds, a fighting game about magical four-legged critters duking it out.

The story of Them's Fightin' Herds goes something like this: set in the land of Fœnum, where sentient hoofed animals built societies and cultures indigenous to their habitat. The land wasn't always like this as it was once overrun by carnivorous beasts that were banished into another realm, bringing a new of a peace for the herbivores. However it seems that the beasts are breaking free from their imprisonment and plan to terrorize Fœnum once. Their answer to stop the beasts' invasion, each race sends in their bravest and willing member to face their leader and seal the gateway to Fœnum for good. However, there's only one enchanted key that can get the job done, so each contender must battle it out to decide who can become the Key Keeper. Yes, it sounds pretty much like every fighting game out there, and the kind that makes me ask "Why aren't they joining forces to kick ass?" but who knows if the follow-through will be better.

According to Shoryuken, the game will be along the lines Skullgirls (which is a given since it uses that game's engine), Super Smash Bros., BlazBlue, and Darkstalkers. Them's Fightin' Herds looks like it's going to be a 3-button fighter with a fourth button being used for Magic attacks, but judging from the gameplay footage, it looks like there can be some very tactile, intricate, yet simplistic combo system going for it. Although two characters are being shown in their early development phase (Arizona and Velvet) though it looks like more is on the way with this concept art of some of the other characters shown above and on the IndieGoGo campaign. Mane6 also mentioned they're putting a lot of effort into the game's lobby system, so online play sounds like a sure thing. But here's the interesting thing about their lobby system: unlike your typical fighting game online lobby, in Thems Fightin' Herds you can explore the world of Fœnum a la 16-bit RPG games where you can interact (and goof off) with other players. Here's an idea of the game's visual lobby system.

Of course, team at Mane6 needs a successful crowdfunding campaign for this happen. At the time of this post, the game is nearing 40% ($170, 095) of its funding goal. Other than getting the game funded for a Windows PC release, they also want to bring the game out to other operating systems and consoles, add other characters to the (so far a goat character is mentioned), more stages (both for the main game and the lobby), a full-fledged Story Mode, and much more. Details can be found in the IndieGoGo campaign page for Them's Fightin' Herds and on the Shoryuken article on it. Let's make this happen!

Gaming / Indivisible - A new Action RPG from the makers of Skullgirls
« on: July 12, 2015, 06:38:53 AM »

Since nobody mentioned this sooner, I may as well fill you all in. Indivisible is a brand-new Action RPG game from Lab Zero Games, the same team responsible for Skullgirls, that was announced about a week ago. The game focuses on a girl named Ajna (AHZH-na) who sets out to journey across the world in search for the answers about her mysterious powers. Along the way she'll meet other heroes, fight monsters, and gain abilities during her travels. According to the Lab Zero Games and the announcement trailer, the game is inspired by the likes of Super Metroid and Valkyrie Profile (Muramasa, anybody?), and the story takes inspiration from south-eastern Asian mythologies along with some others. The game of course will feature the developers' trademark hand-drawn artstyle while the music is being composed by Hiroki Kikuta of Secret of Mana fame. Other than that, Lab Zero Games is aiming to crowd-fund the game sometime in September, with a playable prototype being release around that time, with Skullgirls backers getting a first taste of the game.

Gaming / Transformers: Devastation - G1 Brawler from PlatinumGames

Not sure if this was mentioned in the E3 thread or in another thread (and I've tried searching for it and haven't found a similar post), but here goes. So among the games PlatinumGames are working on that was revealed during this year's E3, they also got another game in the works: a G1 Transformers beat 'em up. So far it is said about the game is that will feature five playable bots from the TV series (Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and Grimlock), five difficulty levels, an in-depth customization system, and of course over-the-top action. Furthermore, the actors from the TV series will be reprising their roles in the game. Kenji Saito, the director of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance who also worked The Legend of Korra game and Bayonetta 2, is also working on the game. The game will come out for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xboned, and PC this Fall.

Gaming / Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - The New Igavania
« on: May 11, 2015, 11:04:39 PM »

It's time to sit in our fancy thrones and smash glasses of blood wine as famed Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi unveils his new Kickstarter project, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, a successor the action-adventure Castlevania games (Aria of Sorrow, Symphony of the Night, Portrait of Ruin, et cetera). Igarashi has teamed up with Michiru Yamame to compose the music and Inti Creates in the game development department.

According to one of my twitter buddies, the project reached its main funding goal as little as two hours with 7,320+ backers (and counting), though I'm not too sure if that's entirely true or not. Nevertheless, the man behind some our favorite Metroidvania titles is gonna bring to some new-school into the old-school. Looking forward to play as the "new" Shanoa.

I'm surprised no body brought this up (unless I missed something). Now what is this, you may be asking? It is a spiritual successor to the Clock Tower series, a point-and-click survival horror game where you must avoid the killer (and the occasional death traps). In short, a slasher movie turned video game. The Clock Tower series did had some less-than-stellar sequels after the second game on the PS1 so NightCry is a return to form to point-and-click horror games. Hifumi Kono, director of the first two games, is on board and he has brought in some guests for the ride.

Now what is this Kickstarter for? Originally this was going to be a mobile game, but the developers wants to bring this to the big screen by putting it up on PC and other systems as well as adding more content to the game. As of now, there's 16 days left on the Kickstarter with almost $60k out of $300,000 funded. You can find the Kickstarter page and a trailer for the game below.

Gaming / Sequence (360, PC) - Playing DDR... for Your Life!
« on: January 09, 2012, 04:22:51 AM »

Xbox 360 trailer | Steam trailer

Anyone of heard of this game? It's an indie game by Iridium Studios for Xbox 360 and later released on Steam and it's a hybrid of a RPG game mixed with a rhythm game like DDR. I know it's a weird concept to grasp, but once I started playing the demo for the Xbox 360 version, I started to enjoy this game. It has a nice tutorial to help you learn the controls of the game and they do some interesting things that most RPGs doesn't do (like trading your experience points to synthesize items and equipment or learn new spells). The game features fully-voiced dialogue and can be funny and witty at times. I haven't heard dialogue this witty since The World Ends with You, but don't take my word for it. [link] If you don't like the idea of playing a rhythm game with controller, the developers were considerate enough to allow for compatibility with a dance mat or a guitar used for games like Guitar Hero or Rockband (so far to my knowledge with the Xbox 360 version and I have no idea how that can work for magic casting and whatnot).

You can get this game on Xbox 360 through the indie section of the Game Marketplace (download from your computer to your 360 here) or on Steam for PC, both for under $5. 8)

Gaming / Capcom partner up with Nyu Media to localize doujin PC games
« on: December 16, 2011, 12:07:34 AM »
Nyu Media, a new Japanese doujin/indie localization team, is working with Capcom to release some of these games into the Western market.

Quote from: Siliconeria
Late last month, Nyu Media Limited announced plans to bring doujin (indie) games out of Japan. The announcement included a volley of Japanese indie titles licensed by Nyu Media for overseas release, including relatively well-known doujin shoot-em-ups like Ether Vapor.

This morning, Nyu Media announced that they’re entering a publishing agreement with Capcom to bring these titles to the U.S., Europe and other territories as well.

“Our partnership with Nyu Media showcases the immense creativity that’s brewing within the Japanese independent game development community and at the same time expands our PC gaming initiatives,” said Christian Svensson, senior vice president of Capcom. “I’m thrilled that Capcom is able to play a role in bringing such diverse gameplay experiences to Western audiences.”

The first game to be released as part of this agreement will be arcade shooter, Satazius, developed by Astro Port (more info here). The game lets you use 13 different types of weapons, which you can upgrade during the course of the game. Satazius will be released on Steam, GamersGate, Direct-2-Drive, Impulse, and other major PC download services.

The game is slated for release on December 20th. It will cost $5.99. Seon King, founder of Nyu Media, says that the company will maintain “accessible” pricing across its titles.
Source: http://www.siliconera.com/2011/12/09/nyu-media-partner-with-capcom-to-publish-japanese-indie-games-on-pc/
- Edelweiss' Ether Vapor Remaster, an enhanced re-release of their first shoot 'em up, Ether Vapor.
- Edelweiss' Fairy Bloom Freesia (will be localized as "Fighting Fairy" which is lame for an already good-sounding title), the sequel to their brawler, Fairy Bloom.
-Tennen-Sozai's eXceed2nd-Vampire REX-, a remake of FLAT's Ikaruga clone, eXceed2nd-Vampire-.
- Tennen-Sozai's eXceed3rd-Jade Penetrate- BLACK PACKAGE, a CAVE-esque re-release of eXceed3rd-Jade Penetrate-.
- Astro Port's Satazius.
- And Cherry Tree High Comedy Club, an adventure game.
Good to see more doujin titles get localized so more people without the knowledge of Moonspeak, though I hope they can handle translation quality better than Trouble Witches NEO.

Gaming / Rockin' Android brings doujin gaming to Steam
« on: August 29, 2011, 11:04:06 PM »
Rockin' Android, the doujin localization company that brought over doujin games outside of Japan like Flying Red Barrel -Diary of a Little Aviator- and SUGURI Perfect Edition for PC, and Crescent Pale Mist and Acceleration of SUGURI X-Edition for PlayStation 3, is bringing more doujin gaming to Steam starting with Gundemonium Collection.

Trailer: http://store.steampowered.com/video/901734/80971

For those of you who don't know about Gundemonium Collection, it is a collection of three bullet hell shoot 'em up titles: Gundemonium Recollection, GundeadliGne, and Hitogata Happa. These games were originally released in Japan for Windows PC a long ago by Platine Dispositif (you might recognize them as the doujin circle behind the Metroidvania game, Bunny Must Die ~ Chelsea and the 7Devils), though Rockin' Android brought these three game in English on PC and much later on PlayStation 3. Although the Steam version of these games isn't just a port of their earlier releases of these games; some of the bells-and-whistles thrown into the Steam version will feature arranged music by DM Ashura and Woofie of the DDR, Beat Mania IIDX, and 02Jam fame, GundeadliGne will feature online co-op play, Steam leaderboards and such.

Doubt many people will pick up on these games (unless you're a shoot 'em up aficionado or a fan of doujin games, or both), but it's nice to see Rockin' Android bring over obscure and rare gems onto Steam, like Carpe Fulgar for bringing over Recettear and Chantelise. I'm hoping Rockin' Android brings more doujin games onto the service.

Gaming / Beat Hazard Ultra gets rejected by Microsoft
« on: May 28, 2011, 05:21:15 PM »
For those who don't know about this game, Beat Hazard is an indie-made twin-stick shooter by Cold Beam Games that's basically a twin-stick shooter at a rave party on crack and Red Bull. The game is powered through the various music you play on your hardware, and your music have it's own unique ebb and flow in the gameplay. The original game is out now on PC and Steam for $10 USD (Steam has iTunes support for an extra $1) and also Xbox 360 via Xbox Live Indie Games for 400 MS Points. Here's a sample of the gameplay...

The guys at Cold Beam Games are currently in development of Beat Hazard Ultra, which takes the original game to a whole new level with all the new features it's going to have.

Quote from: Cold Beam Games
Due out in Q2 2011, Beat Hazard Ultra will take Beat Hazard to the next level.
Features include:
- Online Play
- More Bosses
- More Enemies
- More Power Ups
- More Game Modes
- And of course more music driven eye bleeding action
- Available on PSN, PC and Mac, Q2 2011

Beat Hazard Ultra will be out on Steam and PC June 27th, 2011, while Mac and PS3 owners will get their share of the raving madness later. Sadly, Microsoft is being an arch douche about the game and not publishing Beat Hazard Ultra for XBLA (and what's more messed up is that they have the original on their service, an indie game that is doing very well compared to the 95% of indie games that they offer and they reject this one). o//////o But all hope is not lost for Xbox 360 owners; if anyone signs at Cold Beam Games' petition here at Facebook, these guys will try to get another publisher to get the game out on XBLA. And now to show everyone here what's in store for Ultra.

To Microsoft: if this game never this released on XBLA, I will hate you guys forever and punch you.

Okay, I'm done raving here...

Michael McWhertor — If you like your fighting games strictly on a two-dimensional plane and with just a single gender, you might want to start paying attention to Skullgirls, a new independently developed fighting game coming to "high-definition home consoles."

Skullgirls is the work of Reverge Labs, lead by ex-Pandemic developer and fighting game expert Mike "Mike Z" Zaimont. It's a combo-laden girl-versus-girl brawl, pitting girls with deadly hair and short skirts against each other in mortal combat. And now, after making a few appearances at fighting game tournaments and conventions, Skullgirls is coming to consoles.

The game's distinctive art style comes courtesy of artist Alex Ahad, whose work can be browsed on deviantART.

Skullgirls roster features characters like Valentine, a nurse ninja; the demon-haired Filia; a girl who wears hulking arms for a hat, Cerebella; and zombie cutie Squigly.

Expect Skullgirls to hit Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this summer, even if those consoles haven't been officially announced, with our first proper hands-on preview happening next month.

To see early video of Skullgirls in action, enjoy some pre-release footage.

Skullgirls will be published by Autumn Games.

« on: November 10, 2010, 12:51:38 AM »
Word of this cult-hit PC doujin title just got out that it has finally arrived for downloadable purchase exclusively for Playstation 3. Heh, just when I thought Rockin' Android was never going to get this game out.

Quote from: Playstation Blog
Hello, again, everyone! This is Enrique Galvez and Adam Milecki, returning to tell you about Rockin’ Android’s latest PlayStation Network release, Crescent Pale Mist for your PlayStation 3! Rockin’ Android has become known for its love of shoot-em’-up games, but our passion for video games runs deep and wide. That’s why we’re proud to present Crescent Pale Mist from independent Japanese developer, ClassiC Shikoukairo. It’s a hardcore 2.5D action/platformer that will scratch your nostalgia itch, just like the Gundemonium Collection did, but in a very different way. Crescent Pale Mist combines tense exploration platforming with rapid fighting and bullet-hell shoot-’em-up mechanics into one thrilling experience.

In Crescent Pale Mist, you are the sorceress Yunou, the only magician capable of wielding powerful and deadly magic known as Pale Mist in Gasyukal, a beautiful and explosive dimension between worlds, rife with monstrosities. Toxic Pale Mist is leaking from Gasyukal into the outside world, and Yunou is determined to stop those responsible, her former comrades. As Yunou, you’ll have to explore, but curiosity can kill you here. Take risks, leaps of faith, and battle the myriad of monsters that block your already uncertain path. When you find your way, clash blades and lethal spells with powerful magicians that you once called countrymen, and turn the dreadful flow of Pale Mist against itself. As Rockin’ Android’s own, Jody Mahler, sums it up, “It’s a rivalry between super powerful magicians that has gone too far, and as a result, puts an entire universe at risk for destruction. There are heroes you’ll admire and villains you’ll love.”

Sony Online Entertainment and Rockin’ Android have done their part to make ClassiC Shikoukairo’s hard work on Crescent Pale Mist shine even brighter. Working with the prolific Sony Online Entertainment has allowed us the luxury to enhance the PSN release in a few areas, this includes dynamic lightning, texture mapping, and additional artwork provided by the enormously talented Keiko Sakurai.

Crescent Pale Mist will be available for $5.99 this Tuesday, November 9th, exclusively on PlayStation Network.

Emulation / Issues with SSF and ePSXe with certain games
« on: September 26, 2010, 03:29:25 PM »
I was playing the Japanese Saturn version's Layer Section II (a.k.a. RayStorm on the US Playstation) on SFF and the game does not play the soundtrack properly; usually it plays no music, then when I get to the boss battle it plays the final boss music until it finally plays the proper boss music for the stage. I also noticed when I was playing Silhouette Mirage (English version) on the ePSXe, none of the music plays at all and the game takes forever to load while the Japanese Saturn version of Silhouette Mirage works like a dream, which sucks because I'm starting to like the music from the Saturn version. Also, when I download certain games like the Japanese Symphony of the Night for the Saturn (I won't disclose where I got them), it cannot play it even when its mounted to a virtual disc drive. Is there any way around this to get these games working properly?

Thanks.

A rather bizarre study carried out by German researchers suggests that staring at women's breasts is good for men's health and increases their life expectancy. According to Dr. Karen Weatherby, a gerontologist and author of the study, gawking at women’s breasts is a healthy practice, almost at par with an intense exercise regime, that prolongs the lifespan of a man by five years.

She added, "Just 10 minutes of staring at the charms of a well-endowed female, is roughly equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics work-out."

Crazy? Yes.

Gaming / RosenkreuzStilette ~Blades of the Rose Cross~ Thread
« on: March 13, 2010, 11:26:55 PM »
It's been a while since anyone here discussed anything relating to the world of [Rosenkreuzstilette. So I'll start filling you all in on what's happening recently:

-The Rosenkreuzstilette Fan Contest-

Started late January 2009, Schwer and Schwer Alike has started the Rosenkreuzstilete Fan Contest for those who wish to show their fandom of the series. Many judges will be judging the contestant's entry and decides the winner. The winner will receive a copy of Kiora's Rosenkreuzstilette doujinshi, Rosenkreuzstilette UnOfficial AfterStory which was release at Comiket 77. Rules and entry information can be found at provided links. All entries must be sent by April 1st, 2010

-Rosenkreuzstilette English Patch v1.06a-
With the release of version 1.06a, Darkside Translations is currently in the works of an English Patch for the latest version of Rosenkreuzstilette. Many of the issues found in the initial release will be address among other things. [link]

If you have anything you like to point out that Darkside Translations should see, please let these guys know here!

-The new and improved Rosenkreuzstilette -Freudenstachel- trial version out now!-
The C76 version of Rosenkreuzstilette -Freudenstachel- is available for download at [erka:es] website since August 2009. And this demo shows that there is a lot of promise in this upcoming sequel. Here's what's new in the C76 trial:

- The game's Prologue is playable and you get to face off with Eifer Skute!
- Liebea's stage is not playable in this version of the demo. However, you get a sneak peek of Sichte Meister's new stage instead and the weapon Freudia gets from her.
- Zorne and Grolla has newly designed stages to play.

-The long and overdue delays of Rosenkreuzstilette -Freudenstachel--
Yes, unfortunately Rosenkreuzstilette -Freudenstachel- has been delayed (possibly) to Summer Comiket 78 due to unfortunate circumstances and [erka:es] inability to show up at Winter Comiket 76 for those who hasn't heard of the news by now. So we'll have to wait even longer until the long awaited sequel becomes available. Sorry... :<

If you want to talk about anything Rosenkreuzstilette-related, this is thread to go~!
