Title: 3DS Pricedrop. Early Adopters gets free NES+GBA VC games
Post by: MaJoR on July 28, 2011, 12:21:50 PM
The Nintendo 3DS is dropping in price from $250 to $170 on August 12th in the US. Those that already have a 3DS will get 20 free games (10 NES, 10 GBA, some exclusive) in compensation.

Wow, that is one of the biggest pricedrops in video game history! Cutting a third off the price is a huge change. Sure sales were sluggish, but they weren't THAT bad. I would guess that it's probably a combination of trying to boost sales and making sure they can take down the PS Vita next year. Those compensation gifts are a little uh, not that great, but it's a wise move by nintendo. By releasing old games digitally, it costs them next to nothing. And users get free stuff and great games. It may not work, but it's a smart play.

The good news is, the 3DS's price was an experiment. The wii sold so much it was flying off the shelves faster then they could put them back on, which annoyed nintendo cause that meant they could have been making $50 more per wii and get a little less sales but more profit. So for the 3DS they increased it's price by a great deal. By lowering the price this early, they are admitting that the price experiment was a failure, and that they should have gone lower. This means that the Wii U will likely follow a similiar pricing scheme as the wii, but maybe a hair higher. I guess $300.

Is Europe affected by the drop too?

Then I would buy one immediatly.

Nintendo has only listed the price and change dates for the US and Japan so far. Sorry. But they said that Europe will get the cut, and it will be "about a third", but they haven't gotten into specifics.

Nintendo confirmed for pussies and [Top Spin]s. Especially Reggie and how he was boasting after E3 about how they will not lower the 3DS price and that Vita was not a competitor.

Never mind that fact that it has far  better everything for the exact same price, actual third party developers, all of it's games suck ass, companies are all canceling their 3DS games, and that the only games worth playing on 3DS are just N64 rehashes.

Also GBA VC pretty much announced. XD

I'm not sure about that, they've already said that the GBA games they are using during the promotion aren't really compatible with 3DS (no manual, stops wifi/streetpass, and won't be updated to do so) so to me that says they don't really have plans to do GBA.  Or at least not anytime soon.

And even if they did, I find it weird that they'd never sell the ones they are going to use in the promotion

Can I exchange those 20 games for two free 3DS games of my choosing? Because that'd be MUCH better.

Still, $170, great price compared to the original price.

I never got Mario Vs. Donkey Kong, and the small-name franchises are nice too.  So is any reason to carry less handhelds in my pockets.  And half the selection hasn't been revealed yet.

Plus, you really can't own Yoshi's Island in too many formats.

Nintendo confirmed for pussies and [Top Spin]s. Especially Reggie and how he was boasting after E3 about how they will not lower the 3DS price and that Vita was not a competitor.
As if Nintendo is the only console manufacturer to blow hot air.  That's a pretty common affair in the gaming industry.

Quick update.

Quote
Earlier this week, Nintendo announced that they were dropping the price of their 3DS from $250 to $170. To make it up to all of those early adopters of the portable gaming system, Nintendo also kicked off the ambassador program.

The program entitles members to 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop, half of them NES games and half Game Boy Advance titles.

But it's not automatic.

You need to sign on to the eShop with your 3DS before the Aug. 12 price drop kicks in. No Internet? Sorry, you may be out of luck. Once you do, or if you already have, then your system is signed up for the program. I say your system, because the program is tied to the device, not the user. If you were, for instance, to have registered the 3DS and then sold it, you've also essentially sold those 20 free games to whoever buys that system from you.

It remains unclear, even with the clarification help, whether you'll be able to somehow retain those games if your system breaks or if down the line you decide to buy a new 3DS, say one with a different color.

I'm sure most major retailers will be made aware of the promotion.  Such a drastic mark-down with such a specific "effective date", and all.

Of course, there are WiFi spots at McDonald's across Japan (and other locations), so worse case scenario, those in Japanese without internet might be forced to leave their houses for free games. Horrible, I know.

No word how Nintendo of America is handling internet-less 3DS owners.
IIRC both McDonalds and Best Buy have DS-compatible Wifi hotspots here.

The Kirby GBA one is right tho (at least Nintendo mentioned that in an update a day ago).

The SMA4 one might just be a typo, or a last minute change.
We were supposed to get SMA3: Yoshi's Island.

And where's "Mario vs. Donkey Kong"? D:

It will be the last one, mostly 1st party games, but also some games from their 2nd party divisions (Game Freak, HAL Laboratory, etc)

I really hope they will add Drill Dozer / Screw Breaker in the list. It's so underrated and needs A LOT of attention! <3

So I was trying out this form (http://www.nintendo.co.jp/3ds/ambassador/form/index.html) on Nintendo of Japan's site, writing down the serial number from the back of my 3DS just to see if I get the 20 free games, and it looks like I'm in~ <3

Do you mean news on the eshop itself? I did the system update yesterday, but I don't think I went onto the eshop after that. Did I just screw myself out of this?

If so, it's no big deal. Everything they've revealed I either already have or just don't really care about.

Okay, I got a bit confused. I was under the impression you had to access the eshop after getting the latest system update in order to be eligible, but it seems like I'm okay because I have used the eshop long before yesterday. The only criteria are either you access the eshop before yesterday or do the system update. So I'm safe on both grounds. The message thingy was what got me scared. I didn't see the message because it's apparently gone for everyone now. I would like to check that I am indeed an ambassador, though. Nintendo ain't helping with that just yet.

^I hope so, because I'm up to date with my system AND I log in on August 10th and 11th to be sure on the eShop. Only thing related to the Ambassador program was in the News section just telling about what it is.

I really like to know if I'm eligible or not.

Take it with a grain of salt, but look at this list of NES and GBA games. (http://nintendo3dsblog.com/nintendo-confirms-all-nes-and-gba-games-for-ambassador-program-along-with-release-dates)

GBA games will be available on December 4th. ( Sunday? That doesn't sound right. ^^; )
NES games will be sold to the public on the eshop in October 15th. ( Saturday? Really? XD )

And it looks like some GBA games will be sold on the eshop after all. (if it's true, but an announcement a while ago said they won't be public... hm)
Mario Kart: Super Circuit, WarioWare Twisted (!?) and Pokemon Emerald (!?) are set for a public release in 2012.

NES
~ Super Mario Bros.
~ Donkey Kong Jr.
~ Balloon Fight
~ Ice Climber
~ The Legend of Zelda
~ Metroid
~ Super Mario Bros. 2
~ Kid Icarus
~ Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
~ Kirby’s Adventure

GBA
~ Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3
~ Mario Kart: Super Circuit
~ Metroid Fusion
~ WarioWare, Inc.: Minigame Mania
~ Mario vs. Donkey Kong
~ Pokemon Emerald
~ The Legend Of Zelda: The Minish Cap
~ Kirby And The Amazing Mirror
~ Super Mario Ball

Yes please to Kid Icarus, Zelda II and Minish Cap~ :3

Wasn't that someone confusing Super Mario Advance 3 for Super Mario Bros. 3?

If that list is true, I'm a tiny bit more interested in these games now. I skipped a lot of those GBA games for whatever reason.

I only played Yoshi's Island, Super Mario Bros. I & II,  The Legend of Zelda, and Kirby's Adventure (or was that Kirby's Dream Land?). So if these are true I'll be able to play some of these classic I never got the chance to play before! That's awesome in my book, but we'll wait and see if this is truly correct.

PS: By the way I'm going on vacation for Universal Studios in Florida so you'll won't see me around, or lurking around, for a while now. I'll miss some of RPM's witty comments... and yes I'll miss, you too, Acid even if you did hijack my artwork topic a while back. :P

I have a confession to make: I never played Minish Cap.  If that list is true, that'll certainly keep me busy for a while.

Some little gremlin in the back of my head is still telling me that Nintendo won't be releasing main-series Pokemon games on Virtual Console, though.  At least, not unless there is a transfer solution with the current-gen games.  Otherwise, what's the point?

I wonder if they have a time limit before the opportunity expires.

As in, not redeeming the NES games in a month means you can't get them or some [parasitic bomb] like that.
Title: Re: (Rumor) Complete list of free NES and GBA games on 3DS
Post by: Hypershell on August 14, 2011, 05:01:52 PM
Dunno.  But as far as the NES games go, Ambassadors are getting early builds of the emulator and will be able to re-download the public versions for free when they're available for the rest of the world to pay for.  I would think that status should be preserved whether you download early versions or not.  GBA games are a different story.

And it looks like some GBA games will be sold on the eshop after all. (if it's true, but an announcement a while ago said they won't be public... hm)
I've always taken that announcement with a grain of salt.  I find it exceptionally difficult to believe that Nintendo would leave Yoshi's Island unavailable to the public.  Now maybe, just maybe, they intend to publicly release the SNES version and leave the GBA version exclusive to us.  But, I find it more likely that "no plans" for a public release means nothing more than "we haven't set a release date yet".

Aaaand I was right~

Quote
Nintendo 3DS customers who performed the latest system update or connected to the Nintendo eShop before 11:59pm Eastern time on August 11, 2011 were automatically registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program.

During the week of August 15th Nintendo will launch a website that will allow customers to enter their Nintendo 3DS serial number to check their Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program eligibility. Once the website is live, you will receive a message with the link.

Starting September 1st, 2011, Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES"TM" games at no charge from the Nintendo eShop. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will also provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. To download these games, Ambassadors will need to connect* to the Nintendo eShop. We will be announcing more information and instructions for how to download them soon.

*Wireless broadband internet access required.

I don't think it matters if the last digit in the box is in there or not.

It worked for me both times and said I was an ambassador both times, at least I don't have to worry about them checking for hardware that was sold at the 170 price earlier and stopping people who bought it at the reduced price from getting free ambassador games..

(EDITS: Darn Vixy's ninja-posting)

Looks like the rumor mill got 2 out of 5 (Metroid and Zelda II; lucky guesses I'd say).

Can't really argue with listening to Yoshi Star music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_RkXKJSCo0) wherever I want. 8)

Cool, the games are available on the shop now. What a weird way to download them, though.

I'm not so sure about that.

I can see them in my Account Activity (Along with the Ambassador certificate) but I can't download them.

EDIT: Never Mind, didn't know I had to go to My Downloads to download them.

Alrighty, time to give my opinion.

Very noticeable that this is a beta release for the NES games, there's hardly a manual (Not like you'd need it for most of these games) and no Restore Point Function (If they are planning on including one anyway).

On the other hand, I like how the VC Menu is Red and Grey as opposed to the Green and Grey of the GB Games.

I don't quite get the 2-player option in Super Mario Bros. How exactly is that supposed to work?

You change controllers by pressing L+R then hitting Y (Sorta like how you change the color of the Game Boy screen from Grey to Retro Green in the GB VC Games.)

It works for games with alternating controls like that, but I think wrecking crew (And probably Yoshi and Ice Climber, as well) is Two Simultaneous Players so I'm pretty sure that would be difficult as [tornado fang].

2nd Controller also works in Zelda so you can save the game without having to get killed.

So far the only games I've played are Zelda 1, SMB, and Wrecking Crew so I can't comment on the others.

If anyone still can't access their games through "Account Activity", pick the one right under it: "Your Downloads".

The download buttons for each game will show up there. XD

I will put my games here soon. (http://vgdb.rockmanpm.com/nintendo3ds/)

Fun fact: The Zelda rom on there is the original engrish-intro version and not the updated Wii VC game.

That golf game any good?
"Good" in the context of golf games during that era, yes.  I never tried a golf game before the N64, though, so I'm pretty spoiled.

I'm sure they will, since the GB has it.  Nintendo's already stated that these games will be updated before they go public.

There seems to be some SLIGHT scaling going on.  The NES's vertical resolution is 256 while the 3DS's is 240.  I hope the final games have an option for an unscaled display as with GB/DS games.  I'd appreciate the sharper image, and 8 pixels off top and bottom would be pretty comparable to a box TV's overscan anyway.

Tried playing the golf game, and holy [parasitic bomb] do I suck.

Everything else is fine and dandy, Yoshi is a little confusing but I think I understand how to play it now.

God, i haven't even played Metroid for 10 minutes before it started to lag. Not game breaking, but there was a good deal of buffer. How do you screw up emulation like that?

There seems to be some SLIGHT scaling going on.

Just a tiny bit (1 or 2 pixels at the most). Mario looks fine tho, but you see it clearly in Wrecking Crew, Metroid and Zelda.

But the scaling is horizontal, not vertical. Here's why...

The NES's vertical resolution is 256 while the 3DS's is 240.

One of these statements are wrong. Can you guess which one? Let's compare some NES screens.

Oops~ Wrong game! 8D

Let's try that again.

You see what's going on here? Clearly, every pixel is there for your mouth-watering eye-sparkling enjoyment. But how is that possible?! D:

Because the Famicom/NES is capable of displaying games in two specific resolutions based on video modes. :3

256x224 and 256x240. The most common video mode is the one at 224px, but if you want to display more things on the screen that you normally don't see, 240px is more preferred.

Let's try that again~

Had my NES numbers backwards, sorry.

Guess they're trying to replicate the TV screen stretching.  Kinda messes with me on a handheld after playing/adjusting to so many GBC/GBA Mario ports, though.

Tried playing the golf game, and holy [parasitic bomb] do I suck.
Same.  The meter returns for accuracy faster than it leaves for power, so it's very, very easy to send your ball flying into the woods. :|

So I was playing Zelda, and I got to thinking...

"Wait, doesn't the 3DS have a Microphone?"

I remembered the thing about the Pols Voice and being able to kill them with the Microphone on the Famicom's 2nd Controller.

Of course the NES never had that, and seeing as this is the english rom I'm pretty sure they removed that.

Tried it to see if it could possibly work (By switching the controller).

Nothing.

Missed opportunity to be best port of the game ever. Oh well.

The thing is, it has to be the authentic Famicom Disk System version (with the extra sound channel music and other things) for it to work. And they have to actually program so that the 3DS mic is reacting to the Famicom 2nd controller.

Lately, in Japan, Nintendo decides to just use the "updated" cartridge version in their ports, so many of the old features don't work anymore. ^^;

Oh, that makes sense then.

Thanks for clearing that up.  :)
