Feel free to talk about the Megami Tensei series, character, demons, media, etc. here.

I'll start. Any tips on Devil Survivor for a Megami Tensei newbie like me?

Right now, I got an illness that will not go away. Because the only cure is SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI 4. Not Persona. Not even Devil Summoner (much as I love it).

Make it happen, already, Atlus. My PS3 hungers for that mysterious listing that got onto Amazon.jp a month ago! 8D

Import Strange Journey?

Nah, I can wait for that.

Still! I really want a proper SMT 4. Persona just doesn't stroke it for me quite like the "proper" SMT games.  8D

If you're a newbie, you may want to focus on upgrading your Main Character's physical strength on levelling up until it hits maybe 18 or 19, and then focus on Magic and Health (with the occasional Agility boost), because otherwise Day 3's boss fight might prove tricky. Also, any Demon you can obtain with either Evil or (I think) Chaos Wave as an ability will be your friend, because you can snipe enemies from two or three panels away, and they can only retaliate if they have a demon with the same ability on their team. As far as passive abilities for your Main Character, Hustle and Tailwind are useful if your MC is lacking in physical strength or agility.
Cracking the Elemental Dances (especially Holy Dance) is also useful, particularly against enemy squads that only contain one member, as they'll take all the hits. I'd also recommend cracking Pierce onto one of your characters, so if there's an enemy squad leader that you CAN kill flanked by two that might be more tricky, you can deal full damage to the squad leader instead of the reduced damage normally dealt.

S'not much, but I hope that helps :)

great series, i'm one of those who got into it by never having a chance to play Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, but then got the chance much later when Digital Devil Saga came out~  Great game~

I'm taking my sweet time w/ Devil Summoner Kuzunoha Raidou 1 at the moment since I have a bad habit of starting 2-4 games in intervals then do chunks each at a time lol.

I appreciate the help. Though its kinda funny that you bring up the Day 3 boss because I'm at Day on Devil Survivor as we speak at this moment. But right now I'm focusing on raising demons to fuse to get super-powerful ones, like this Pendragon that I fused; it has 28 in Str. Right now my MC's stats are all around 10, I was trying to make my MC well-rounded but focused on Agl, Str, and Mgc. f^_^;

Hey does anyone remember the "Miss" Yasogami Pageant on Persona 4? XD

Pendragon's not bad, and your MC's stat spread is decent. My only concern with it involving the boss is that with the generic mooks that accompany it, it might be healing damage faster than you can deal it.

Also, Teddie as Alice was hilarious.

Right now I'm actually trying to chain-fuse some demons to create a Basilisk for my team since its stronger then the Toubyou Str and Mgc wise.

I agree partially. Leveling up the MC's STR is a good thing up until about 15 or so (if you can score any attack increasing spells or so, do nothing but have your demons use them in the battle with the boss in question), but there's too many moments in D.Survivor where you have to rescue someone, so Genma or Avian or Wilder demons are a must, so grab the latest ones and fuse'em, you'll need the movement space (I don't know if Avian's abilities and Wilder's abilities stack, so it might be better to just have two characters to have a Wilder at the start and the other to have an avian, and then when you get the 4th member, give'em another Avian). Chaos Wave and Evil Wave are not helpful when you need to cross the whole field to get to someone.

The problem with the Dances is that they tend to only hit twice, not three or four times. Pierce is another good ability, but the major problem with that is by the time you have access to it, most of the enemies will repel attacks instead of null, resist, or absorb, so having an Almighty attack works better. Speaking of which, GET DRAIN ASAP. In other SMT games, Drain isn't that useful of a spell, but here, with the right members, you can drain the entire enemy party of their MP and spent none whatsoever yourself in the end.

As far as ending's go, you can try Noya's (or whatever the cousin's name is) path first, since the beginning chick leads to a bad end and bad NG+ (won't spoil anything, but as far as rewards go, her's sucks since she doesn't do much, while every other path gives you +1 to move). While it doesn't really matter what path you go down, Noya is a damn good spellcaster and can REALLY make up for what you lose on his path. Seriously, he's more potent than the MC (mostly), it just sucks that certain spells require other stats to be high as well.

*headdesk* How the hell did I forget Drain? Ah well, it seems my playstyle's a little different to yours. I actually took Yuzu's route first to remove the EXP cap when trying the other stories. Mostly because of the final bosses.

If you have Ice Dance, you can hit him hard. Other than that, you'll just have to bum rush him with a ton of different people. Put a Wilder on the person who's stuck on the other side so they can get to the main party to help assault the guy. Having Evil/Chaos wave here does help out a lot since you can have that person snipe Belial while everyone else pummels him.

The problem with Yuzu's route is that you don't get the extra move, and it's extremely helpful since you're able to cross more space in less time, which helps ease the missions in which you have to save someone.

Nah. As a friend of mine put it, it may be even more proper to say it's "SMT3 proper", since it basically does more to be what SMT3 could have been, if it was made on the SNES/PSX generation. 8D

With that being said, I never delved in to the new generation SMT games as much. Tried Persona 3 and dropped it like a rock as I'm admittedly not a fan of that style of gameplay, and the new tone really put me off. (Yeah, I'm one of those fans... go ahead and sue me)

Strange Journey is looking to be a nice breath of fresh air for me as I've been latching on to the snes games and the first two Persona games for so long.

SMT IV came out in the US today.

If you're planning on buying it Physical is the far better value with all the goodies it comes with.

And like I mentioned before, buy and register both SMT IV and Fire Emblem Awakening (Physical or Digital) and you'll get a $30 eShop credit that you can use for either the 3DS or Wii U.

Post by: Phi on July 17, 2013, 12:36:32 AM
Yeah... that $50 price tag is a turn-off for me though, mainly because of the sprites. I mean, SMT Nocturne is a PS2 game and used 3D polygons for battles and everything. I don't get why IV suddenly went back to the 90s.

That being said, I just want to try a demo to even consider buying it. Just like with the Etrian Odyssey IV demo, which made me preorder the game in a heartbeat. goddamit I still haven't finished that game

Are you seriously saying graphics are something driving you away from the game

I'd rather it be more 90s esque in battles and cutscenes anyway since sprites look so much better for that kind of stuff than models do, that and the 3DS has limited strength/game size capacity compared to the PS2 so that could be a reason too.

And regarding demos there might be one on the eShop. I still have to get EO IV, so lazy on following that up.

Not always. It depends on the developer.

You'd have a much easier time making a detailed sprite in comparison to making a detailed model, yes. But that's about it; good, detailed models would be harder to produce. Doesn't mean it's impossible.

Models can look amazing with time and patience.

that and the 3DS has limited strength/game size capacity compared to the PS2 so that could be a reason too.

No.

3DS is stronger than the PS2. It's also higher than GameCube, but slightly below Wii, with more advanced shaders and lighting capabilities. Revelations is proof of that. The textures and bump-mapping are fairly advanced too; Nano Assault, as well as Revelations (again) is proof of that.

(click to show/hide)

Currently, the highest known size capacity for the 3DS is 8GB. PS2's memory only holds 32MB.

Are you seriously saying graphics are something driving you away from the game

Not my point.

I'm fine with sprites, being an old-school gamer and all.

What I mean is the mix between the 3D overworld and 2D battles doesn't sit well with me. Either make the game completely 3D, or completely 2D. Looking at the dark, fiery 3D environments with sprites in middle looks silly to me.

Now, I just want to try a demo to see if it's as bad as I fear. Playing it enough times, I may get used to it, and perhaps even like it.

But either way, incredibly lazy of them considering the 3DS' power.

Good to know somebody knows far more about the 3DS than I do(Seriously, I don't know anything about it.). But the 32 MB thing for the PS2... I don't think that's right, do you mean memory? Because games got quite big looking at some of the iso's I have.

But yeah what I'm thinking is that they either had the possibility to make everything models and ran out of space because the game is massive or something or they believed the game just wouldn't run very well in battles against enemies whose models would be massive.

To be fair I actually don't really know what I'm saying, I could be entirely wrong. They probably had a good reason for it though (and again I'm honestly fine with that since Atlus doesn't really try and push the envelope anyway with their graphics that much, and while they have done good looking models in games like Catherine I don't think they would've looked terribly great on the 3DS, especially not with the smaller resolution (though it would've looked better for 3D but hey what do I know.)

I feel I should mention the game's already got some DLC available, three things to be precise, two free and one for $1.99, they appear to be missions and costumes mainly. I'll dig deeper into it tomorrow.

And... A Persona 4 Rhythm game called Persona 4: Dancing All Night made by the Project DIVA team for the PS Vita. I guess that could be fun maybe playing as Rise dancing to P4 music.

Besides, persona music is actually really good so while its probably not going to be an amazing game seeing as its basically a reskinned miku game it won't be all bad.

Besides, there's nothing wrong with what basically amounts to a Rise-centric spinoff

It fits considering the Main themes and vocal stuff in P3/P4 was for the most part in English save for the end songs.

I just find it funny that the Vita gets a rhythm game, while the 3DS gets an actual RPG.

And yes, I know Vita has Golden, but you know Sony fans are pissed.

But they're getting P5 on PS3 so there's nothing to complain about.

Three Persona games in the near future is fine, two games on Sony and one for Nintendo, its the only Persona game on a Nintendo system at least.

Basically PQ is an Etrian Odyssey game (or they share the same engine, from what I hear) and those have been DS exclusive since forever.

Also it seems that P4U2 won't be coming to the 360 if the latest videos are anything to go by.

Well, according to a twitter post, PQ is canon. And it's supposed to properly conclude P4 and P3's storyline or something.

So, that's one thing to get Sony fans disappointed.

I kinda didn't want to have P3/P4's world conclude but it had to eventually I guess.

Doesn't explain why P3 Protag and Shinjiro are alive. Or why Tartarus is back, or why Theo is present... though that could be explained by there just being more Velvet Room Assistants than we ever see.

I just realized something.

If PQ is supposed to be canon, and Marie appears to be present, that essentially makes P4G's additions completely canon.

I'm not really sure if I like this or not, Marie really isn't a good character at all.

Taken from the Megami Tensei wiki (http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Persona_Q:_Shadow_of_the_Labyrinth):

Quote
The story of Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth revolves around a rumor that involves the so-called "Seven Wonders of Yasogami High" and a mysterious clock tower and a labyrinth that appear out of nowhere on the school yard during the Culture Festival of Yasogami High School. According to said rumors, whoever hears the sound of the tower's bell will die. The bell's chime was also heard in Tartarus by the members of SEES, who find themselves transported to Yasogami High. The only way to return the world to its original state seems to be hidden within Zen and Rei - however, both Zen and Rei have lost their memories.

The gameplay of this title is deeply grounded in its Etrian Odyssey roots: Players explore a seemingly endless labyrinth in a first person perspective and battle Shadows in a turn-based fashion just like in Persona 3 and Persona 4. However, players can use a five-man party consisting of the casts from the previous games.

Persona Q gives players the choice to control either the Protagonist from Persona 3 or the protagonist from Persona 4. The dialouge and events will vary depending on the players choices to follow either the Persona 3's SEES or Persona 4's Investigation Team.

Not sure how I feel about the EO-style of exploration.

Side games sometimes don't follow continuity.  Otherwise Shinjiro wouldn't be there either, especially since the FemPersona 3 Protagonist/Minako is not in there.

Good point, I hope they don't undo the ending of the third game; it would kinda spit in the face of the whole theme it had going.

On the topic of Persona; a while ago I watched an episode of Persona: Trinity Soul and yeah---who  decided it was smart to introduce a plot point that only young people can use persona? What about the multiple adult characters in the series who used them with no ill effects? The persona games are all in the same canon (and arguably in the same canon with the main series and other spin offs.) so I'm guessing this is just a mistake on the anime's part?
Title: Re: The Megami Tensei Thread

Yeah especially since it's not exactly canon as far as the continuity of the games.

Post by: Blue Valkyrie on February 26, 2014, 01:28:01 AM
Glad to hear it, Trinity Soul wasn't very good from what I saw and I doubt I'll make any effort to watch any more animated entries from the franchise.

Canon in the SMT is an odd thing though, so many of the spin offs are clearly related to the main series even if it's not the same earth, the female protagonist of SMT: If... is in one of the Persona entries (Persona 2 Innocent Sin?) if I remember correctly. Like Zelda I gave up trying to piece the whole franchise into some cohesive whole, so much easier to accept the Amala Network from Nocturne as the multiverse of the franchise and leave it at that.  8D

At least watch the Persona 4 anime, while short and obviously they don't get too deep in every single nook and cranny and skip over some things, it's worth it for the main character and how he reacts to things.

The Deadpan guy who doesn't really get fazed by anything?

Yeah, that was fun. It'll probably be the same crew since they're doing the Persona 3 movies as well, just with a different animation company.

Speaking of P3 movie, the first one's coming out on 5/20 in the US, no dub of course because Aniplex, and its like $80 for the special edition ($60 for regular) also because Aniplex.

Oh well. A chinese subbed version's been floating around so within days we'll have an english one. Though it'll be sort of tough to connect those voices to the characters since I'm familiar with/prefer the dub.

I believe there are still some P3 characters not represented yet. Although I've been told the protagonists can't be in the game cause of plot reasons, they could BS them in somehow.

Anime News Network threw out a jokey idea of Vincent, which I am totally behind.
Title: Re: The Megami Tensei Thread
Post by: Police Girl on May 22, 2014, 05:55:50 AM
In terms of P3's SEES members, the only ones not present for the ride are:

MC/Minato/Makoto/whatever because he's a door.
FeMC because same reasons as MC, also because non-canon.
Shinji because he's dead.
Fuuka because unlike Rise her Persona's probably not able to have any sort of combat functionality.
Metis because she wasn't real.

Obviously P1 and P2 aren't gonna be repped at all because Atlus hates them for some reason.

Will never happen but it would be neat to see a character from another game in the SMT franchise; even if it's nothing more than a non-canon deal. The Raidou Kuzunoha lineage has been involved in the Persona series before (Persona 2 and Innocent Sin), and his demon summoning would make a for a near move set.

I feel she's an interesting character myself, I like her role in the story, social link and plotwise, her design looks awesome, and she actually says Fsteak which is not only a Hiimdaisy reference but also some clever localization on her original line in Japanese.  Not to mention I find her cute when she gets embarrassed despite not really liking her poetry.

Honestly Minako is much more of a Mary Sue than she is, though that's just me not really liking Persona 3 that much in general and the Female route social links feel like absolutely trashy teenage fan girl fan fiction. I mean I get the protags are in general Mary Sues, Yu is certainly another case though in a more positive way, but Minako is just more taste like diabetes Mary Sue and Too Good for this Sinful Earth.  For [tornado fang]'s sake, she manages to undo Shinji's death if you make the right choices, has social links with all party members unlike Minato who only has them with the females, her music is just peppy bubble gum trash, and don't get me started on Ken's route.

Marie's actually in my top 3 female characters in Persona 4 behind Chie and Naoto who kind of tie with each other and in my top 5/6 overall along with Aigis, Eriko, and Lisa Silverman. But that's just my opinion.

Uhh... moving on.
I really don't like the boxart here.

First run of Arena 2 includes the first half of the Tarot card set, no Special Edition here. You also get some Inflatable Teddie thing and Adachi's DLC, which will be free for the first week the game is out.
Kanji, Margaret, and Naoto are all getting recast. Kanji's being played by the guy who played him in the second half of the first Anime. The other two, no clue.

P3's second movie came out this month, focuses on the timespan where the last movie left off (Right after Full Moon #2 and Fuuka's rescue) to the Full Moon in October, for that reason it focuses mostly on Ken and Shinjiro's backstories, slightly changed from the game.
Next movie is apparently to be called "Falling Down", presumably there will be 2 more movies afterwards too.

It's got to be Memetic Mutation referencing the karaoke bar scene aka Stupid Sexy Narukami.

The box art may not be final, as it seems to be updated with each new character announced. Notice how Adachi is sunck in on the felt? Marie is not on that picture, but there is one floating around that does have her and Margaret, likely meaning she'll be playable too.

Naoto's VA was different in the anime as well. Dunno about Margaret though.

Meet the Egotistical Police and the Antisocial Poet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqaQsA3t0Aw#ws)

JYB seems to be basing his Adachi voice more off the way it sounded in the Anime more than it did in the game (Going by the higher pitch he's using)

Also, MARY is not how you pronounce Marie. Or maybe it is.

I see they're gonna put it on the PS4 now too. Lets hope that doesn't bite them in the ass.

I don't think so, apparently the angel thing is the Main Characeter's persona.  I think the Thief outfits are the result of masks that serve as.....whatever it is like the Guns in 3 to summon Persona and the glasses in 4 to see through the Fog.  Also interesting that Guns are a thing for the MC at the very least, we haven't seen guns as being important in combat, barring Naoto and Aegis, since the first Persona game when they were Sub Weapons for all party members.

And the blond dude using a club is pretty cool, really fits the thief aspect. I also like how the cast looks fun despite the oppression themes.

Yeah I was right, the guns as Sub Weapons from the first game return.  And a Slingshot I guess.

Protagonist/The Phantom: The player character, a delinquent who moonlights as a gentlemanly thief. Wears a masquerade-ball mask and wields knives and handguns.

Ryuji Sakamoto (坂本 竜司): A yellow haired delinquent who attends the Protagonist's school and joins the Protagonist in his hesits. Wears a skull mask and wields bludgeons and shotguns as weapons.

Anne Takamaki (高巻 杏): A blonde girl in the Protagonist's homeroom, who joins the Protagonist in his heists. Possibly foreign, as Takamaki is a Finnish last name. Wears a cat mask and uses whips and submachineguns.

Morgana (モルガナ): A shapeshifting cat that joins the protagonist in his heists and has some sort of connection to the Seven Deadly Sins. Wields swords and slingshots.

    PROTAGONIST
    - The protagonist is a second year high school student who has recently moved to the big city, and lives with his parents friends at a coffee shop named SUMIKON.
    - The protagonists unique Persona is called Arsene, presumably derived from the fictional gentleman thief Arsne Lupin.

    STORY
    - Unlike the heroes of Persona 3 and Persona 4, the protagonist of Persona 5 has a problem of some sort that, if not faced down, could spell big trouble in the future. The sequence in which he looks like a prisoner takes place in what could be called a Mental Prison.

- The protagonist meets other two characters and cat creature in the trailer at the beginning of the game. The other two have their own life problems as well, and cat creature is mysterious, can transform, and is key to storyline.

- There are reasons behind why Personas appear as the enemies the cast are facing, however Hashino is remaining silent on that point, as well as where the protagonists fights take place.

    THEME
    - Instead of the カッ(flash) seen in previous Persona summon sequences, it looks like itll be ブチッ(snap) instead. The latter is the sound used to refer to something snapping. Like someones patience is running thin and hitting the breaking point.

    ANIMATION STUDIO
    - The animation studio that is handling Persona 5s anime scenes is Production I.G, and that studios anime director is the one who suggested the character figure skating scenes in the trailer.

    PRODUCTION
    - Because it is the first time Personas are being made for high-definition platforms, the development process was particularly arduous on that front.

    COMBAT AND EXPLORATION
    - The game starts in Shibuya, but takes place in various parts of Tokyo as well.
    - The battle system will be turn-based, with improvements to previous Persona games.
    - There will be randomly generated elements in the game, however major places in the story will be structured to emphasize the burglary theme.
    - Each character has their own distinct firearm for long distance weapons, however they arent actual guns, yet are still effective in combat.

    SOCIAL LINKS
    - A Cooperation aspect of the game will involve helping sympathizers around the town, which will somehow be beneficial in battles.
    - Social Links or a mechanic like them will have new twists, while also pertaining to their traditional elements of increasing various strengths/abilities.

    CHARACTER DESIGNS (Shigenori Soejima)
    - The protagonists seemingly docile nature is a profound ruse.
    - Persona 5s logo is meant to emphasize the youthful nature of the plot and characters; conveying a sense of speed and dynamism.
    - The protagonists Persona, Arsene is designed to be a little more old-school, including his name, though making the whole thing come together and look stylish with that sort of constraint wasnt without its share of challenges. Its cape/wings are meant to portray the image of a thief who lurks around places where normal people dont belong.

    MUSIC
    - The song heard in the Persona 5 trailer is the instrumental version of the main theme, according to series composer Shoji Meguro. He also stated that he wanted to give the music an acid jazz-like feel elements to bring out the games mood, including in the main theme. Direcotr Hashino was glad hearing the music since the jazz music goes hand-in-hand with the story of Lupin in its phantom thief motif.

When I first saw the trailer, I didn't notice anything distinctly SMT or FE about it. At best, I recognized Tiki, but I didn't care enough to rewind the video at the time and just assumed otherwise.

Fun fact is that Persona is technically not supposed to be branded as a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei, but the original Megami Tensei, and in Japan was known as "Megami Ibunroku Persona", only sharing the "Megami Ibunroku" brand with Devil Survivor. In Japan, this game is titled Gen'ei Ibunroku♯FE, which pretty much cements the fact that this crossover is now Persona/Devil Survivor and not SMT, despite initially being teased as such way back in 2013.

I actually originally wondered why they chose SMT instead of Persona to crossover with Fire Emblem. The target audience of SMT is mature, whereas Persona and Fire Emblem are more the teenage anime crowd. Can't really say I'm surprised they made the switch, but I am surprised by how loosely related it seems to be.

But really I think this is less of Persona 4 being too popular but rather Raidou Kuzunoha being too obscure, even for an Atlus title, especially since there's only 2 games. Any other Atlus titles I can really think of are more standalone honestly.

The Mari stuff felt tacked on, if you ask me. The one thing I like from Golden is being able to befriend Adachi, otherwise... eh.

P3 had a similar problem with the whole new part in FES and with saving Shinji in P3P (which defeats the whole purpose of that moment, really).

Also Morgana's Persona is freaking Zorro, Ryuji's Persona is Captain Kidd and Anne's Persona is Carmen from the Musical Carmen and not at all related to Carmen Sandiego obviously. :P

HYYYYYYYYYPPPPPPEEEEEEEE! *o*

I was waiting to see what other party members were going to be in the game and I was not disappointed.

But I have to say Igor's new voice is completely jarring. o-O

Also Beelzebub fatass has a nice design.

Showing all the School Emblems for all 5 games was a very nice touch for the 20th anniversary too.

Can't wait for this.

Visually it has all the flare of P3 and 4 while looking all dark and moody as any SMT game should--every map looks so alive, and I can't wait to go into the dungeons-look at all the new stuff in them!

Also stealth and throat slitting sneak attacks!  owo

Waaaaaaant.

This game has more flare than P3 and 4 combined.

The new animated menu stuff is cool, adds alot of personality.
