Title: ModNation Racers
Post by: Protoman Blues on June 07, 2010, 07:46:08 AM
Okay, so I've owned this game for literally a day and I've decided to make a topic about it.  Now, those PB fans who actually remember and keep track of what I say and post might remember my huge E3 2009 post last year in which I stated that ModNation Racers was the game I was most interested in that was showcased at E3, because it looked like a fully customizable Mario Kart 64.  Well, I can safely tell you that it's not and that once again I don't think any game will come close to topping Mario Kart 64 as my favorite racing/kart game ever made (okay it's my 2nd fav game of all so it's a tough bar to cross).  HOWEVER, after playing it for a good portion of the day, I can probably safely say that Mario Kart Wii serves little purpose, and that Nintendo is going to have to do something really extraordinary with their next Kart game to top this.

Again, I haven't played a huge portion of it yet, but ModNation Racers is an absolutely fantastic game.  It's so customizable that you can literally spend your entire day in the game and not race, but instead create and mod your character, your kart, and your own race tracks.  The customization in the game is pretty much flawless, cept of course for them charging you real money for stuff at times.  Not a whole lot mind you, but PB ain't having none of dat.

As you progress in the Career Mode, you unlock more items in which to customize your character/kart/track with.  The Career Mode itself is a lot of fun, with hilarious dialog & writing, very silly scenarios, and of course lots of fun driving.  The handling for the karts is similar to Sonic & Sega All Stars, in terms of drifting, but I believe it handles it better.  Not only that, but you can customize your handling as well.  Also, the drift/boost system is very well done and adds an awesome level of skill & strategy to the game.

When you drift, you build up your meter.  The longer you drift, the more meter points you get.  What's great is that you can use your meter for 3 things: boosting, shields, or sideswiping.  This is where the skill & strategy comes in, because all 3 meter abilities are very useful.  The weapons in the game are very creative, even though there are only 4 of them: bolts, missiles, sonics, and turbo.  The creativity comes in with the ability to upgrade your weapons with each item box you get.  The level 3 weapons are pretty devastating and this is why one might want to save their shields instead of constantly boosting.

Another great feature of the game is the fact that you can share your customizations with everyone, as well as download other people's creations as well.  Currently I have the Green Ranger and Lion-O for racers.  I haven't even fully explored all the customization features yet, but what you can do is incredible, just judging by what I've seen available for download.

All in all, this is a game I would highly recommend to all PS3 owners who love Mario Kart type games.  This game is sexcellently awesome.  I hope some RPMers get it so they can race with the PB!

That's pretty damn awesome. Honestly, Sega All-Stars has been my favorite "kart" title for awhile, and if any game can capture the gameplay and make it better, it's a damn winner on my book.

....now, how are the level creation tools?

Well, when I did it I had four locals to choose from, Jungle, Temple-ish, Desert, and I forgot the other.  Then you can paint scenery all around or just go straight into building your track.  You have a pretty good portion of road that you're allowed, and you can even choose what kind of asphalt you want to use.  You can arrange the track however you want too, adjusting the angle & height of the track and everything.  After you build your track, you can populate it with all kinds of [parasitic bomb], like boosters, jump lifts, item pods, hazards, and all types of [parasitic bomb].  One really great thing is the Auto-Populate feature, which you can run along the track like a paint brush and it will essentially do it for you, scenery & everything.  If you don't like some choices they made, you can remove anything you don't like and put in anything you want.  I like it for the scenery building aspect of the Auto-Populate.  At any time, you can test drive your track or do preview mode which allows you to watch AI Racers go along the track.

Can't think of anything else with it.

Can you make tunnels? What about pipes? Can you make pipe-roads that allow you to race around them in 360 degrees?

Depends on where you are, but Amazon usually has good deals. If you live in Europe, though, there are a few good sites that make it cheaper.

There are plenty of good online sellers that sell it for a great price. Plus, great games, and you can share downloadable games by account share. =P

Cool. I'll think about it.
  • "Niggard" is not a bad word by any stretch of the imagination
  • "Niggards" is not a group of people
  • "Niggard" means one who hoards things, so your phrase is redundant
I'm WELL AWARE. But there's a slim chance there are people in here that don't know that. -_- Fix'd anyways.

I got that piece of furniture out of the garbage. It's pretty sweet, and can withstand massive console weight. Of course now I moved the 360/PS3 to a space to the right because the HDMI cable's not big enough. At least now there's space for the Saturn and the X-Box.

I have full plans on getting my mits on this game ASAP.

I've gotten to the point in MKW where i've gotten just a "tad" too good at the game and it's rare that i find anybody who can beat me, not saying i can't find said people, but it's rare.

I'm hoping that Modnation with it's Diddy Kong Racing like weapon system will treat me.

I find drift points easy.  But the ones like the one I mentioned, plus the "DON'T HIT A WALL" one can be taxing.

I think it's a great combination of Mario Kart + Sonic & Sega All Stars handling.

There is no snaking. Instead drifting building up your meter, and then you can boost.  Like I said though, a lot of times you need to be careful not to waste your meter or not, cause shields become VERY important.

Not really since that's what it turned to despite creating a topic based on the game as a whole as opposed. Now it's "Ask Dr. Mod" (has a nice ring right PB? lol)
Let's  keep everyone's interest in check. We need more MRC'ers out there. ^-^

It's been dropped since last post. Thought it was evident.

Attack Items: (based on description, you can determine the balancing)
boost, sonic, missile, and lightning. Each can be upgraded to a third level of power.
A level 1 sonic attack just creates a radius of rings around you that knocks the other opponents off the track.
A level 1 missile just shoots straight ahead causing the car to blow up.
A level 1 boost is just gives a small speed boost.
A level 1 lightning is a straight forward bolt that zaps the enemy in it's place.

Posted on: June 11, 2010, 10:15:51 PM
A level 2 sonic attack throws out giant spikes ice balls(?) that hurt those in front of your viewing radius however the actual spikes have to hit. (which are about 4)
A level 2 rocket is a homing missile that tracks the person in front of you.
A level 2 boost is a hyper boost that lasts longer than the first.
A level 2 lightning is just like a homing missile only it stuns them upon hit as opposed to exploding.

Posted on: June 11, 2010, 10:31:37 PM
A level 3 sonic attack is a huge shockwave that hits everyone that starts from your location to wherever the first place is. Doesn't hit all at once.
A level 3 rocket is a serious of homing missiles that hit the first 3 placers (based on MY experience)
A level 3 boost aka " The warp" creates a rift in space that covers a 1/5 of a distance track wise and is used to immediately gain up in place. Good for last minute wins.
Finnaly a level 3 lightning is just like.... Mario kart's lightning attack only you don't shrink and you're paralyzed for a few seconds.

By storing your attack item and going over another attack box it goes up one level. I forgot to mention that in this game there are "properties" of certain attacks as well such as losing weapons and deleveling. haven't spent the time into to tell you all the details but thought I'd mention that.

Yes!

Now, been wondering about this for awhile. Are the items balanced? Any blue shell-like crap? Can anyone here give a small description of the items?

The items are completely fair, well thought out, and balanced IMO.  I'll give a little more info on the weapons...

Missiles
LVL1 - Missile shoots straight ahead, does not lock on, ricochets off walls about 2-3 times before exploding into wall.
LVL2 - Two missiles shoot out, lock on to opponent ahead of you.
LVL3 - Macross missiles shoot out, missile targets every opponent in front of you.

Lightning
LVL1 - A bolt shoots out straight ahead of you, does not lock on, slightly stuns opponent
LVL2 - Chain bolt shoots out, locks on to opponent ahead of you, will stun opponent plus person right next to him as well (not sure if it's everyone or just 1 person)
LVL3 - A missile shoots into the sky, sky goes dark, a lightning bolt comes down and strikes every opponent in front of you, stunning opponents even more

Sonic
LVL1 - A small sonic ring appears around your cart, stuns opponents next to you
LVL2 - 3 sonic mines launch in front of you, unleashes sonic bombs, slightly stuns opponents
LVL3 - A sonic wave fires in front of you, stunning all opponents in front of you

Boost
LVL1 - Limited boost forward
LVL2 - Longer boost forward
LVL3 - Creates a warp tunnel in front of you, you warp forward and appear several racers ahead of you depending on your position, opponents behind you can also use warp tunnel if drafting behind you (last part is according to Lou)

Weapons are leveled up like Copy X said.  Also, weapons can be lost as well.  I know the Sonic definitely gets rid of weapons, but I'm not sure about the Lightning & Missiles.  LoL, up till 4:30AM playing last night and I forgot!  XD

I do know that sideswiping your opponent lowers the level of your weapon as well.  That much I do remember.

But like I said, the items are completely fair and are not cheap in any way.  This is where the beauty of the strategy aspect of the game comes in.  You can hold onto your weapon to level up, but then you run the risk of losing it.  You can store up your shields, but they can still run out.  To me, THIS is what Mario Kart lost after MK64, and what I miss about the game the most.  This is why I love the game so much.  It actually brings challenge, strategy, and effort back into kart racing games, instead of just blind luck.  Although, some of the challenges in Career Mode definitely give you the MK A.I. out to get you aspect!   8D

Aaaaaah, that sounds much better. And the items seem more balanced. As long as there's no blue shell-like weapon, that targets one single person who's got the best position, I'm okay with it. This does seems like you're hit with weapons alot, though.

^ Someone was definitely playing up all night yesterday. lol
Good stuff on the better descriptions.  owob

You do get attacked a lot in this game which is why there are different ways to build up shields. More than makes up for it, but there are instances where it still fails.

I'm finally come to the conclusion that the best way to summarize Career mode: You'll hate it... but you'll love it at the same time. Does that make sense?  XD

That's why shields are so important!  And even then, they won't always save you. XD

Well, GOOD. Because shields are only useful 5% of the time when you get them in other games.

I'd say Creation Station. Make your character first.

It doesn't have to be everything, if that's what you're thinking.

My PSN is in the thread, the second last post.

I'm still awaiting the region unlock before i play it seriously again =/ I've got too many american friends and too many other games to play.

If i want to play a racing game i can actually play the majority of my friends against then i'll play Mario Kart =/ Modnation is a good game don't get me wrong but they've been saying "Oh the region unlock is coming in the next update" and then backpeddling and claiming they never said anything like that >_>
