Title: Alien sounding names
Post by: Waifu on March 01, 2009, 04:08:45 AM
Does anyone on RPM know the  secret to creating aliens that have exotic like Jar Jar Bink, Tlic, Yob or Worf? I was wondering for years how they come up with those names for the aliens and their planets but I could never found how even Quickman was once Greedo the Quick. I wonder if it is from Babylonian, Sanskirt, Hebrew or any other ancient language that they derive these names from? I just want to know where they come with their names, it seems so exotic and unique at thr same time.

I swear that some of the names that SW authors come up with were the result of random typing with apostrophes thrown in for good measure.  Like so: Wuf'gide

Now that I think about it, that doesn't sound far from the truth XD

Lets see what I can come up with =P

Kewuf'varuc
suaip'bawuienkoi

Well, it's harder to end up with something that sounds decent than it looks like XD

Now to find the correct spelling of some real gems from Wookieepedia...

Mitth’raw’nuruodo aka Grand Admiral Thrawn
J'ywz'gnk Kchhllbrxcstk Et'nrmdndlcvtbrx aka Joh Yowza
The planet of J't'p'tan
M'iiyoom Onith aka Nightlily, a H'nemthe

That's all I can think of off-hand without going on an exhaustive search.

to make alien names, just take random letters and fit them together into something that sounds like a word. having uncommon letters like Z and Q in there is almost guaranteed to happen, though there are exceptions. i'd consider Lelouch an alien name.

My parents were originally planning to call me Alnod. They didn't. Thankfully.

To find names, I usually go to name generators. There might an alien name generator somewhere.

Real word (or world) names seem to work best. Like Ciel. Or anything based on mythology.

Step 1: Smash keyboard
Step 2: Add some vowels
Step 3: Add apostraphes
Example:dois'dejsk

Alternate, extremely difficult route:

1. Create language. There are lots of lovely sources for conlanging.

2. Establish naming method for that language. The kind of thing the culture that speaks that tongue would use.

3. Piece together words from that language. The name might mean "[ray splasher] Meadow" in English, but it can sound magical and mysterious untranslated.

and eventually...

4. Get lazy and start making it up as you go along.

Well, sometimes you can find somewhat alien-sounding names when you look through your phonebook.  Here's some I got from my phonebook:  Shoukat Jahan, Koomson'amoah (complete with apostrophe!), Farooq Khokhar, Toto Jost.

Also, combining words, names and even typos can give you that weird sound you're looking for.

I just sit and think of weird names that fit the species, e.g. Skriik, Vov, Xeng, Nknknk. Or just take the names of places from wherever you live and throw in some reliable ol' apostrophes or hyphens, e.g. Li'Merikk, Taa'Laagh or Longa-Fordo.
