X / People seem to think that Sigma is gone for good after X8.
« on: October 29, 2012, 05:33:31 AM »
Why is this? I thought Sigma was destroyed when X used Mother Elf to kill the Sigma Virus and end the Maverick wars. I feel like I either missed something, or Sigma will be back. If they ever get around to X9 that is.

Original / What is Pharaoh Shot anyway?

Is it a charged up ball of some kind of energy? Or is it a big ball of sand? Never was sure just by playing the games, seemed it could go either way.

Let me start by getting something out of the way. I could have reviewed this book months ago when I received the preview copy, but I genuinely wanted to read it on paper first. And I am glad that I waited.

Story:
The story is a continuation of Asteroid blues that introduces the Star Droids in a unique way and combines many elements of Mega Man 8 and Mega Man V. Unlike Gigamix vol.1, Gigamix vol.2 has two separate chapters of the same story, making it a very lengthy and entertaining read.  I don’t want to delve to deeply into the plot because I fear it may ruin the experience for you, but I will say that it is unique in that Wily and Light seem to truly be forced to team up to combat the threat of the Star Droids. Also getting to see a different side of Dr.Wily, and younger versions of he and Dr.Light was a unique opportunity.  There is a Cutman transformation that is truly awesome, and an explanation for why Dr.Wily and Dr.Light ever decided to work together in the first place.

The story is packed with action and heart, it is an eye opening insight to the world of Ariga's Mega Man that is in line with how I originally viewed the character at a time when the internet didn’t truly exist and I was left to my own devices to interpret the story. This story invokes nostalgia and the desire to see Ariga direct and create the story for any future Mega Man game titles. If only Capcom would hire this man.

This manga is truly worthy of the paper it was printed on. The story is 10 times better than anything Capcom has ever officially given us in the game series. This is mostly due to the outstanding efforts of the Udon translation team. They seem to understand how to give us a story that is not simply translated directly, but instead tailored to an American audience while remaining 100% true to the original source material.

Art:
Ariga's artwork has as many robots as possible jam packed into each panel, creating the feeling that even with their combined efforts, they are destined to fail.  I was never left wondering what was going on, and each page has amazing detail and clarity. Every time I think Ariga cannot top himself, he goes the extra mile and dominates my brain with imagery that is explosive and complex.  The character designs are hyper detailed and show that Mega Man characters can be so much more than the simple way Capcom's artists draw them, it just takes the right amount of imagination, and Ariga's got that in spades.

To sum up the review, I would just say that if you are a Mega Man/Rockman fan and this isn't in your collection, you should get it immediately. Why are you still reading this? Go get it!

Just got word from Matt Moylan about the freshest batch of Udon books that are soon to come!

Matt had this to say:

"MEGA MAN: ROBOT MASTER FIELD GUIDE

This project has been through a lot! It turned out to be a lot more work than expected, has got through a couple total overhauls, and also had a lengthy approval process. But the book is now completed. We have rescheduled the book for

January 2012. It could be ready a bit earlier, but because the book is so late we want to give comic shops the chance to adjust their orders on the book. (As a little background, comic book shops cannot return most unsold books like big chain book stores can, so shop owners appreciate being able to adjust their orders on a late title. “Mom & Pop” comic shops are still a big market for UDON, so we want to take care of those folks when we can.) Thanks all for being patient on this fun little book!

MEGA MAN GIGAMIX VOL.3

The final book in Hitoshi Ariga’s ultimate Mega-manga series is now at the printer. It’s expected to hit stores early November. A more precise date and previews will be coming closer to the release.

MEGA MAN: OFFICIAL COMPLETE WORKS

MEGA MAN: ZERO OFFICIAL COMPLETE WORKS

We are reprinting both of these titles, and they’ll be back in stock before the end of the year. So don’t pay any crazy reseller prices! ;)

MEGA MAN TRIBUTE

Just a note, if you haven’t picked up this book and want a copy before X-mas (for yourself or for a gift) I’d suggest  to you order early. Due to some miscommunication, our printed shorted us on this title about 20% less than we wanted for the first printing. We do still have a decent amount in stock, but that could sell out quick closer to the holiday season. Whenever MM Tribute sells out we will do a new printing, but it’s not likely to make it in time for X-mas, so just a heads up!

Also, we have a few new Mega Man projects in the works! Hopefully we can announce some of them soon. Thanks all!"

So there you have it, straight from Udon. What books would you like to see brought over from Japan?

Original / Mega Man 2.5D
« on: October 04, 2011, 02:47:51 AM »
Is it possible to recapture what made the 8-bit games (and their emulators 9 & 10) great, in 2.5d? Did Powered Up do it? Or did it miss the mark?

Some things to think about are:

Mario did it well with NSMBWii.
MHX came really close, with the exception of the dash-jump off the wall.

Opinions.

Discuss.

News and Announcements / Mega Man/Rockman Gigamix vol 1 review.
« on: June 05, 2011, 09:10:04 AM »
I was recently contacted by Matt Moylan from Udon, he wrote asking me if Rockman Pm would care to write a review for Gigamix. I graciously accepted and the resulting review is my take on Gigamix. I hope you enjoy it!

Mega Man Gigamix Vol 1 is the most recent translation by Udon of the Rockman Gigamix series by Hitoshi Ariga. This mange represents Ariga's more mature take on Rockman, and it features excellent artwork to boot! The book opens up with a nice recap of what happened in Megamix to bring you up to speed, however if you haven't read Megamix your missing out on a lot of goodness, so go get it already!

The art in this book is phenomenal; Ariga has without a doubt improved on his technique in every way since Megamix was released years ago. Not only that, but the touches added to the book such as cameos from Rockman Dash characters and Rockman.exe, are a joy to read and add to the artwork enriching the experience.

Ariga's action scenes are well laid out and easy to follow. The robot masters use their weapons in very clever ways and are a joy to follow. Ariga even takes a cue from the ruby spears cartoon and has Mega Man steal a robot master's weapon with a simple tough of his hand. I love these kinds of nods, and they really go a long way into the charm factor.

Asteroid Blues was my favorite story in this book as it introduces Breakman, who looks amazing, and retells the story from Rockman 3 with startling detail, while remaining fresh at the same time. Without giving too much of the story away I want to say that I was left wondering about Wily’s methods of success until near the end of the story.  At first, I thought maybe he was a robot, but the actual truth explains a couple of things about the Ariga version of the Rockman universe.

While I did not enjoy Burning Wheel as much as Asteroid Blues, I will say that the story kept my attention all the way through. Some of the plot was silly, yet that is the kind of silliness that is makes Ariga's work charming.  The rush bike from Mega man 8 makes an appearance here, and as a fan of that mode, I appreciate it! Also it's shown that Dr.Wily is not a total bad guy, as he lets Roll live.

Both stories lay out a great take on the Mega Man universe and I cannot wait for Vol. 2 to hit stands!

I would recommend Mega Man Gigamix Vol.1 to any Mega Man/Rockman fans that haven’t read the original Japanese Manga because of a lack of the Japanese language. This translation is superb and offers a great telling of Ariga's story.

News and Announcements / Rockman Online artwork and details.
« on: June 03, 2010, 10:42:03 AM »
The Mega Man Network reports that the new Rockman Online game being produced by Korean developer Neowiz, will be using the Rockman X series as its basis. The game is said to use 3D graphics with a 2d perspective, thus evoking games of the past. Here are three pieces of promo art that are circling the web.

Note: I flipped Zero around because I noticed a mistake in his artwork.

This is where the good news ends. The game so far is only scheduled to be released in Korea, Taiwan and China. There are currently no plans to release this in Japan or America. This is where you come in! Head over to www.capcom-unity.com and make your voices heard on their forums.
