My FPS history includes Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, Catacombs 3D, Perfect Dark 64 (which really got me into shooters back in the day), and Halo.
Some of mine was Unreal Tournament on the PS2 and Halo 1.
(Yea, I was not one of those lucky kids who grew up with a computer.) I always wanted to try out the first Perfect Dark since I heard a lot of good things about it, so I might get it on XBLA. One of the reasons I got into FPS'es like BioShock, System Shock (though that's part RPG) and Doom (though I'm playing the PS1 total conversion) is to get away from crap like CoD.
I would be more interested in Castlevania.
The only Metroid games I would be interested in are Super Metroid, Zero Mission and Metroid Fusion.
And one of the games I would play once I get a Wii U would be Gucamelee since that would be the Super Turbo Championship addition.
If you don't me making a suggestion, how about the Gargoyle's Quest (Gargoyle's Quest I, Gargoyle's Quest II, Demon's Crest) series? They're kinda Metroidvania but instead of being one huge, interconnected world, you have an overworld like the earlier Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest games but each of the main levels are played like a side-scroller. You find items and enhancements that gives you new abilities or upgrads. I haven't played the first two, but I'm playing Demon's Crest, it's pretty good though boss difficulty can be a mixed bag, items can be
too well-hidden sometimes, and the game has some slowdowns. The soundtrack is pretty good too.
Demon's Crest (SNES) OpeningHoly [parasitic bomb]. HOLY [tornado fang]ing [parasitic bomb]!!!!
Warner Bros. put up the ENTIRE soundtrack to Batman: The Animated Series available to download. I've been wanting this FOREVERRRRRRRRRRR!!!
I'm so happy right now!
Nice. Can't wait to buy them.
