The X Collection's convenient, but it came off pretty cheap.

To answer the question about starting off X with the air-dash: it would trivialize the leg upgrades if that was the best they could come up with. I think they could've come up with better mobility perks than hovering and gliding, at least for a few more games. I also think it would've been an interesting challenge to design levels around air-dashing and up-dashing, just like how Mega Man X introduced level design built around regular dashing. But the nice thing about that game's level design is that you could even beat it without the dash upgrade. I've never done it, but I think the fact that you can do that serves as a smooth transition from the classic games that preceded it, as well as a nice gesture.

Look, all I'm saying is X should've gotten a leg upgrade that lets him do something awesome, like a Sonic Rainboom or something. Call it the Rainbow Dash boots.

Also someone draw that armor, please.

Sans the delay, the upwards air-dash was fine. I don't know why they didn't continue with that upgrade. Or why they didn't start X out with horizontal air-dashing.

One born of a gamer who evidently never played ZX...

Oh, I did. I also didn't like it that much, but that's a different topic.

Rarely do Mega Man boss gauntlets restore weapon energy between rounds.  And even rarer still does such a restore fill an entire weapon bar.

Considering the inherent requirements of the Boobeam fight, I think an exception would be reasonably necessary. But if that's not acceptable, then the only other option is farming areas, Like Final Stage 4 in X1 or pretty much any other final stage.

The thing about X6 is that while you ARE required to collect some manner of upgrades, IN NO WAY WHATSOEVER is one specific upgrade required at any point in the game.  Each and every obstacle in the game has multiple solutions.

Unless you're X, in which case you either have to go on an expedition to find the part you need (assuming the Reploid in question wasn't killed), or use Pause exploit. The latter shouldn't even be considered an option, since the design of how the game should pause--or how a weapon is coded--has no intended (read: intuitive) bearing on how you clear platforming obstacles.

In other words, it encourages you to experiment, THINK, and apply the method that suits your personal play style.

Even if it means the above.

Also, rather than choose to skip in a menu such as X5, X6 requires that you earn the right to skip either by defeating High Max or by spending an extensive amount of time farming for Nightmare Souls, either of which should familiarize yourself with the type of curve-balls that the game is expected to throw at you, and provide any intellegent gamer with an incentive to get equipped before facing the unfamiliar.

Any "intellegent" gamer would realize how easy it is to short-circuit the game's design when all that's needed to defeat High Max is one single weapon. If the game punishes you for doing that anyways, then it's a trap. Why put that there? Is the point to give us the option and then chastise the player for taking advantage of it? It's a case of mixed messages.

In the rare event that you are truly stuck in a level and not just giving up too easily (which outside of Gate's Lab can only happen on optional, alternate paths), the whole must-die thing?  It's called Use Previous Data.  Unless you're subject to X Collection's tomfoolery (if so, make a habit of saving), there is no excuse to not know the game's menu.  I'll admit that removing the "stage already cleared" exit restriction would have been more intuitive, but Start/Select to the Title gets you the same result.  X6 does not require suicide (which, if you are a completionist, X5 does).

Yes it does. If you unwittingly find the secret path in any stage before getting a weapon, after defeating Nightmare Zero, that will lead you to High Max. That not only means you have to kill yourself, but it also means you've wasted your time.

Finally, in before "the reploid with the part I need was killed", because that's a popular myth.  The most valuable thing you can possibly lose is Speedster, which is useful ONLY for physics exploits that you have no reason to be attempting once you've got Hyper Dash.

True, but between needing Blaze Heatnix's Nightmare Effect AND Blizzard Wolfang's weapon to get the vital Jumper part, the whole ordeal is just bullshit.

That's a pretty heavy Christmas, man. Sorry.

If you can, I'd curl up next to the TV and watch some childhood movies. Preferably after all the issues are sorted out.

I'd still enjoy it more than X6. :p

But seriously, that's why I said variations. Nothing too complicated, just shuffling around the barriers and laser turrets, maybe making the room taller or fatter, having the turrets move around, etc. But I think we've gotten far out of hand enough.

You do realize you're also calling the health/weapon refills between boss rushes a "cop-out", then, right? That's basically what I was citing.

Oh hey, I was looking for that video, thanks.

Treleus, what happens when you access dropbox.com?

No problem!

I don't understand the question. I see a splash page with a download link and a video.

Also that man is wearing the skin of an animal. He is unclean and must be stoned.

I want to show up at a Game Grumps panel one day in a really good Poppy Bros cosplay, chucking inflatable bombs at them and prancing around like the happiest arsonist ever.

In hindsight, that would've been a good idea, but I was too jazzed to try out my shiny new laser.

Have you by any chance suddenly found yourself with much less free time?

Oh, have I! It's my first internship. Plus I'm working on my last two semesters of college in 2013.

I've been wanting this for a while, actually. The push to actually manage my time helps me figure out the things I actually want to make time for. What to do regularly, what not to do, small-to-large projects, etc.

My approach to time/productivity management comes in the form of something I've thought about doing, but never really got much mileage out of: a journal. Instead of writing in it and ruminating about each day (usually with a tone of disappoinment/depressive self-reflection), I'm taking cues from Lifehacker and using it as a daily planner & accountability chart. It makes a huge difference, in that it provides me the structure and initiative I need to attack (or enjoy) each day with direction. It helps me avoid distractions by allowing me to easily prescribe discrete subjects to focus on, instead of worrying about an overarching phantom of obligation in the back of my mind.

It's really satisfying to do this, because I feel a little more like I'm in control of myself. The time constraints I plan out for my activities are rewarding instead of restricting when I satisfy them. Even if I don't, I just start again the next day.

I watch those things and play at the same time. :3

I watch them and post on RPM/read articles/do repetitive stuff at the same time. Or when I'm cleaning the room.

The only time I watched Game Grumps while playing a game was when grinding for zenny in Legends 2. That was pretty fun

I love this thread. Keep posting dat freeware. Here's a wild wacky one for y'all:

http://www.oldspicesavestheworld.com/

It's as hilarious and classy as it sounds.

Not sure if I mentioned this game on here yet, but it's also amazing. Props for using a tune from Descent at one point--one of the few exciting ones at that:

Note about the ending & certain easter eggs: don't let it get to you, and don't read too much into it. As far as I'm concerned, it's all in good fun (if a little shocking to the unawares).

Other than that, it's damn near the most inventive and well-made Sonic fangame I've ever played.

EDIT: Okay, two more Sonic games:

The best sidequest in Mega Man ZX is the love letter quest.

It's the best because it shows exactly why I hate sidequests in action games: blatant backtracking.

One day I'd like to make a really good cosplay of some cute, cuddly character (Tails, Klonoa, Sonic, etc.) and just give people free hugs at a convention or something. Or at a mall, I don't care.

Other things I'd like to one day do:

1) Make other cosplays
2) Learn guitar
3) Make a game/story/music
4) Start a video series on Youtube (already have a channel)

Most of the questions don't apply to me, since I'm late to the hottest things besides the Wii, but I'll answer what does.

2. Best game that you've played in 2012 for the first time (doesn't have to be a 2012 release)
Really good question. I'm gonna hafta say The Last Story. With a Classic Controller in hand, it's easy and fun to control.

3. Game you've played the most this year
Ocarina of Time 3DS. Still a masterpiece after all these years, and then some after the facelift. This will be the first time I 100% complete the game, too.

5. Most disappointing game/game-related thing of the year

Legends 3 not getting restarted/no Prototype (technically its 2011 but whatever)

6. Most surprisingly good game of the year
The Last Story, because apparently this game was disappointing to some. I was surprised to find how much fun shooting banana peels at people is.

7. The Graphics Whore Award for most visually impressive game of 2012
Gravity Rush. Saying this game is beautiful is an understatement. You have to see it for yourself.

8. From 1 to 10, how would you rate 2012's gaming as a whole?

TENOUTTATE--not really. Considered I haven't sampled much of it, I can't give a reliable score. I don't think 2012 will be as exciting as 2013.

9. A 2012 game that you wish you had purchased, or plan to

999, Virtue's Last Reward. I'm saving the Wii U for later.

10. What 2013 game or gaming-related thing are you looking forward to the most?

There's plenty to look forward to: new Retro Studios game, Legends 3/general Mega Man games, The Cave--an action adventure game hybrid produced by Ron Gilbert & Double Fine? I'm there, man. I'm hoping Strike Suit Zero impresses as well.

11. A moment of silence for the Wii: what was the best game on the little white box?
Netflix

12. What's your favorite game ever?

Link to the Past

Spent the day at work wishing I was at home playing videogames, absent-mindedly watching some HideOfBeast speedruns and some Game Grumps.

I can't complain about the internship--it's great--but man, is it ever just a job to me. I gotta get my [parasitic bomb] together.

Pretty good day nonetheless. My cold is backing off, and I'm ready for Friday. Just gotta tie up as many loose ends at work as I can before the new year comes around.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Happy Birthday Protoman Blues. I'd send you our last piece of rum cake, but unfortunately we don't live in Star Trek yet.

Finally got around to Ben There, Dan That! Really funny adventure game with a goofy art style and goofier dialogue. I'm loving it. I'll probably burn through it by this weekend and be onto the sequel, Time Gentlemen, Please!

Aside from that, I've discovered the Scarecrow's Song in Ocarina of Time 3DS. I never knew that was a thing. This time around I'm going all-out with the side-quests: selling masks to people, getting all the Golden Skulltula tokens, and generally just finding everything. It's great fun.

Now, if only I could just get that onto the big telly ...
