Gaming / The Witcher Thread
« on: September 22, 2011, 12:29:16 AM »
With The Witcher 2, one of the most glorious RPGs ever made, coming to the 360 soon, I thought of opening a thread on the series.

Here's a screenshot of the leaked 360 version.

Doesn't look as good as the glorious PC version, but for a game that has currently the best graphics on the market, it looks REALLY good. Anybody played this series? The first one's a bit aged, but still quite awesome. The second one is just ultimately brilliant. They've concocted a town AI behavior of the likes of which I've only seen in Shenmue and a few others, every single thing in the game looks amazing, the enemies are smart and will kill you if you're not extra careful, you can set up traps and the monsters move vividly and fantastically like real wild things, and the plot of the game is quite good, with quality dialogue and tons of stuff in it, including getting drunk and waking up in the next morning with all the villagers recognizing you as someone who tried to cross the river mounting a prostitute.

Here are a few screenshots.

Man, this looks so awesome. And flight actually looks controllable, but secondary in fighting environments. Strategic uses of certain elements to get through enemies, and teamwork. Why'd this get cancelled? ;_;

Tiny wind-up before each strike? Yes.
Small slowdown after each strike to deliver a God of War-style heavy blow experience? Yes.
Slo-mo finishing moves to make the whole thing cinematic instead of fluid? Yes.
Combo system that allows you to catch enemies from anywhere and just stay in the air indefinetly comboing for tons of time, even though it's much slower than normal Devil May Cry gameplay? Yes.
Terrible camera? Yes.
Devil Trigger that makes everything slower instead of making you vicious, and that stuns all your enemies? Yes.
Bogged down combos that seem to be as basic as in any God of War game? Yes.

...ladies and gentlemen, I think we found out the Devil May Cry 2 successor.

Scenery looks pretty damn cool though. Credit where it's due, Ninja Theory have always been good at impressive sceneries.

Gaming / Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

The best dogfighting series there is, is getting a brand new demo in the japanese PS Store and XBox Live in three days. Who's excited? I'm excited.

http://www.siliconera.com/2011/09/12/ace-combat-assault-horizon-to-see-a-japanese-demo-this-week/

In case nobody ever tried out any of these games, I really recomend them. Controls take a bit to get used to, but they are amazingly smooth, and the combat situations they pose are friggin' awesome. Zero's the best in story mode, but multiplayer in Ace Combat 6 is FANTASTIC with friends. I have fond memories of dogfighting and watching my friends' backs as we repelled invaders.

So, who has played the greatest RPG/Action combination franchise ever made? Both the original and the prequel. The sequel doesn't exist.

This game's like a wet dream for every single 40,000 fan. Bolters FEEL like Bolters. Slicing greenskins is satisfying as hell, and the lack of any kind of pansy cover system makes me moist. This is Warhammer as we've always imagined it, happening in the best of ways. Who's playing it? Or tried the demo?

The demo is AMAZING. In the more than 20 years 40,000 has existed, we're finally getting something approximate to how it feels.

Gaming / Your Fondest Splitscreen Memories
« on: March 18, 2011, 10:49:32 PM »
Everybody knows that splitscreen isn't as common in games as it used to be. It's usually considered a thing of the past, replaced for online. But we all have fond memories of our home multiplayer sessions with our friends, kicking ass. So let's share some of them, shall we?

Myself, my fondest Splitscreen memory is probably from playing Tony Hawk's pro Skater 2 with my friends. We'd pick Spider-Man and black suit Spider-Man, and we'd just play all day, trying to one-up each other with our combos. At a certain point, we got what was the funniest fall we'd ever seen in the game, lotsa hurt, but we all started laughing. From there on, we'd start making falls happen, trying to be hilarious as possible, making each other laugh. It was great.

I also remember the Sonic 3 races back in the Mega Drive. Multiplayer back then was basic, but it was so damn good. The levels were short and simplistic, but we still managed to make it competitive and really fast. Must've been my first splitscreen game. This one time, this kid I was playing with at a birthday party slapped me because he lost. I just went "You just angry cause you looooost!" and he cried all day. My first trolling. ;___;

Anyway, share your memories. Just don't make it 100% Mario Kart.

Gaming / The "Open Your Mind" Gaming Challenge!
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:07:19 PM »
Alright, people. Let's do this.

This is a challenge for anyone interested, and I hope alot of people accept.

Everyone has games, or genres, which they have no fondness for. Which they aren't interested in, don't have time for, and somehow, those genres and games get alot of attention and are widely respected in gaming culture. Classic gamers aren't very interested in more modern experiences, and vice versa. People who go through big story-based games aren't interested in the yearly sports game, and vice-versa. People who like JRPGs, don't like WRPGs, and vice versa. We all know the stereotypes, and we all have a little bit of gaming prejudice in our closets, which comes out when we want to scoff at the people who like games that are inferior to our MASTER RACE GENRE.

What I'm proposing, is this. You apply for the challenge, give a quick description of your favoured genres. What you like, and what you don't like. And here's the kicker... you have to be TRUTHFUL about this: You're not gonna play a game you assumedly don't like because of your own experience. So you're gonna play a game which you admittedly haven't given a real chance. (EVERYONE has games like these. Yes, EVERYONE) Then when you play it, you'll take a few screenshots or pictures, or whatever's at hand, and relay your experience with the game to the people. The important thing is to relay the experience as you go, while you enjoy the game yourself. We're not trying to make Let's Plays here, just what's your whole experience is being like, and what you're up to in the game.

There are a few rules we have to set up here, though. To make this a fun experience (apologies for the overuse of this word).

1- Whatever game you choose, it'll have to be a game that you haven't really given a real chance to. No playing a game you actually experienced enough to the point of disliking it outright.
2- No picking games which are widely considered to be weak examples of the genre. Whatever you pick, no matter how many underground fans a crappy thing has, it has to be widely regarded as a good game.
3- You don't have to finish the game. But you do have to at least experience it as much as you can, suck in alot of the genre magic, alot of what makes the game fun. If you play it for hours and still have yet to have any fun at all, you're welcome to finish your experience.
4- NO QUITTERS. And I do mean that in the sense of "tutorial's not being fun. Can I go now?" Play the game at your own pace, take breaks of how much time you want, but at least make the effort to play it.
5- No multiplayer stuff, at least if you can help it. We'll be focusing on campaign-only games (single player for youse peoples) for now. If a game is multiplayer-only, or the experience is made much better in multiplayer, whether it's versus or co-op, play with good friends and not random net griefers. And play with someone who knows the game, so they can try and make you have a good experience.
6- Don't go hating. Give the game a chance. Comment on other people's experience as well. Don't spoil. Help others enjoy their own experience. Just... the obvious things that don't need saying.
7- I don't want people to waste a fortune in a game they might not end up enjoying. But I don't want a plethora of "emulateable classics only" here either. Both old and new experiences, please. But try to choose games which are either cheap, or can be illegally obtained without alot of guilt on the way. If you need any game yourself, approach me by PM and I'll see what I can do about anything you choose.

I dunno if this'll be successful, but I hope it is. The main point of all of this, is to get you to try out entirely new experiences, and put simply, to have fun with them. To try out completely new experiences you haven't really given a shot, and to make it so there's less scoffing between genres and games.

I'll enter this myself, but I want to see how much attention this gets, and how many takers. I'll edit the post later so I can put in a list of whoever is doing this. Hope to see plenty of open minds here!

Gaming / Dead Rising 2: Case 0 is out on XBLA!
« on: August 31, 2010, 06:49:49 PM »
I know there's a (really really really old) Dead Rising topic, but instead of bringing back a topic whose last thing was "possible footage of game", let's restart over by talking about the new pre-game DLC chapter for the new Dead Rising game.

My first impressions are positive. Now, for anyone who knows me, with games I enjoy, I like to take the bad stuff out of the way first. So let's see...

- You take too damn long to level up. This can be annoying.
- Yes, the time limit is back. (But the story's much better, easier to follow, logical and the design/save points make sense now.)
- Area's really tiny. (but well used)
- Framerate doesn't seem as smooth as the original.

All of this seems minor compared to how the game handles. The gameplay and overall animations seem better, the weapon handling as well, and one thing to note... the survivor AI is VERY improved. Yes, it still has the stupidity of any gaming AI, but this time around, they can actually defend themselves and follow you more easily. The new kinds of weapons are really fun to use, although the items are hard to find, and this prologue shows us a very tiny area, which is easily exploreable but it's taken advantage of in the game quite nicely. The boss at the end of the prologue seems fairer and more balanced than some of the psychopaths in the first game (those [tornado fang]ing snipers, god dammit) and the whole game seems like a typical Capcom sequel, improving upon certain things from the original.

Oh, and there's a Protoman cardboard standup you can beat up zombies with.

Entertainment / All-Star Superman confirmed for animated movie!
« on: July 27, 2010, 11:57:30 PM »
This isn't DCAU, nor is it strictly comic book business. I think this pretty much deserves its own topic, due to how massive this thing is.

http://blog.newsarama.com/2010/07/27/all-star-superman-to-be-into-dc-animated-movie/

Yes, it will never be as good as the comic, but if they can capture even a TINY BIT of the magic... even a TINY LITTLE BIT... we'll have the greatest Superman movie of all time... or the greatest superhero movie of all time.

For all those who aren't familiar with the comic, All-Star Superman is pretty much the best (IMO, and quite popular opinion) Superman story ever written, and one of the best comic books around. It mixes the uberman myth with tales of gods and massive undertakings, and gives us a look at the human being. It's an absolutely amazing work, and the fact that it's actually getting a movie, rather than another Loeb piece of crap, makes me very, very happy.

Gaming / What PISSES YOU OFF mid-game?
« on: July 04, 2010, 02:11:52 AM »
Aw-right, people. Dis be a rage topic. READ THIS ENTIRE POST BEFORE POSTING PLEASE.

INFURIATING gameplay-based moments of the games you played but then RAGED at a detail which made your life more annoying that one day. Can be a staple of many games, can be a staple of one single game, but I'd prefer it if it was one of those moments which people have normally experienced, common moments to games overall. Include screenshots if you want. Try to post stuff people know, but not cliché crap. Everyone knows the Water Temple. Everyone knows the Battletoads sequence. Make it so you show people ACTUAL gameplay flaws, not pure challenges but crap that just should NOT be there by gaming standards.

Alright, let's begin.
-----------------------

Games that have enemies giving you constant damage at a higher speed than the speed you get up after being knocked down. We've all experienced this. Main character takes a hit, main character falls down. Nothing wrong with that. But RIGHT as soon as the main character gets up again, he falls down AGAIN without giving you a single chance to escape from the damage you've just been dealt, because the enemy is shooting, punching or whatevering you really quick. And you have no choice but to watch your character constantly get hit by the enemy and slowly watch its health being drained without having a chance to escape, UNTIL a moment presents itself in which your button imput is relevant again and you walk away with a minuscule amount of health because of pure stupid game design.

Give feedback and leave your own, people!

This trailer makes me so happy I'm gonna have to change pants everytime I think about it.
It seems to be as incredibly awesome as Fallout 3 was, plus more. I can't wait to see the new areas, and to get my hands on the new weaponry, which seem to be quite fun. Lots of explosions too, it seems.

Here you go. Game's pretty good, but I wasn't able to play much. It's by the creator of Broken Sword, so witty dialogue is at least a given.

Now, the download won't work for anyone outside the UK, so just use this:
http://www.daveproxy.co.uk/index.php?e=unique_mismatch&p=YToxOntpOjA7YjowO30=
Just paste the first link I gave there, and use it to download the game. I know, I know, if this counts as piracy, just gimme a warning and I'll remove the link. Because BBC plans to eventually SELL us the game, for us, in other areas, in JULY, MAYBE, I guess this was pretty much an early response to highway robbery the way fansubs are. Anyway, any kind of problem with this, and I'll remove it immediately. Just say the word, I don't want any trouble.

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/02/batman-the-brave-the-bold-and-the-trailer/#continued

Yes, the game's from Wayforward. It's also a 2D sidescrolling beat-em-up, and seems to be pretty damn awesome. I LOVE Brave and the Bold and the wacky way the show is basically a reason to geek out over less known characters in their crazy adventures, so this is a perfect oportunity to check it out. Plus, Wayforward makes awesome stuff. Everybody has a hard-on for Shantae, but A Boy And His Blob for the Wii was the most adorable puzzle game ever. Even their licensed stuff has some charm. Got a great feeling this game will turn out good.

New trailer's out. This game is looking AWESOME. I love the fact that you have to choose a power base, one single main power which will be "your schtick". Then you can probably form your own Justice Leagues with friends and go fight bad guys. I'm going speedster in the game (surprise surprise 8D) mostly because I think being way too fast in an MMO is a hilarious option. Probably going evil, though. In the mood for some Zoom-like shenanigans.

Anyone getting this?
