Entertainment / Crafting the Sun
« on: July 28, 2016, 08:05:49 PM »
Hello fellow RPMers,

I'd like to take a moment to present a novel:

Crafting the Sun by Sophia J.H. Teh

Now, this is a book I've helped edit from its conception. After several years of works it's finally published, but in dire need of an audience. In today's saturated market, it's very easy to get lost among the crowd. So on behalf of the author, let me spread the word!

If what you're looking for in a story is compelling twists and turns with realistic characters chock-full of development, then definitely check this out.

Furthermore, the rich and fantastical future setting it takes place in is very reminiscent of MegaManX, with sentient robots and whatnot, but greatly expanded upon.

Hopefully that all sounds compelling to you. I'll let the tale speak for itself. It won't dissappoint!

2
Little is known about the interim between the Mega Man and Mega Man X series. An official outline of events does exist, but the developers prefer to leave matters to our own imaginations [1]. With this topic, I hope to piece together the fragmented bits of information we have on this elusive time period, supplying reference whenever needed.

Time Travel
Our first glimpse of the future comes courtesy of Quint. That enigmatic robot is actually Mega Man himself [2]!

Mega Man and Mega Man?

For those unfamiliar with the story of “World 2”, Wily once stole an experimental time machine from a time-space research lab and used it to spy on Mega Man’s future *1.

He arrived in a peaceful world, free of conflict, in which an older Wily had reformed and Rock had reverted back into a household robot [3]. By conspiring with his future self, Wily kidnapped Rock and turned him into Quint before returning to the present.

So what does this mean for Mega Man’s future? Will Rock inevitably become Quint? What happened afterward?

“Challenger from the Future”, despite it's questionable status in the canon, does give us a little more insight [4]. In that game, we’re introduced to yet another time travelling foe. While many confuse him for Quint, “Mega Man Shadow” is actually another robot from Quint's future time, made in Mega Man’s image.

Mega Man Shadow and the Dimensions.

When he arrived in the past and attacked Symphony City, Shadow told the following: the future Wily has not given up on his ambition of world conquest.

A lie, however. In his dying breath Shadow admits that Wily truthfully did not continue his evil ways. Though, he does reveal a bleak future in which Shadow himself became mad with power, desired to destroy the world, and faced ever stronger foes until no-one remained to stop him.

In the end, Bass and Rock both learn valuable lessons from Shadow’s tale. They vow not to go down this same path. Their determination gives us hope that perhaps, and only perhaps, Rock will not become Quint and a new future may be written.

Mega Man
The fate of our hero is officially unknown. Though it may seem destined for Rock to become Quint and meet a poetic demise in battle against himself, this future represents only a possibility. As changes from the past ripple onward into the future, so too might the present stray from this set path *2.

Mega Man and Quint in a heated battle for the future.

Using our imagination, limitless scenarios can serve to explain Mega Man’s absence from the X-series. While we know that Rock did not become Mega Man X (they're separate entities) [7] [27] [28], one other explanation in particular has acquired much infamy over the years.

As many fans have asked: did Zero kill Mega Man? And if he did, who else?

Keiji Inafune’s personal stance is that Zero did NOT in fact kill anyone. It’s not in his profile [5]. Furthermore, the man has expressed a great distaste for excessive violence in the classic series [6]. Also let us not underestimate Mega Man in a theoretical battle against Zero.

Though Zero is a fearsome robot built by the late Dr. Wily as his most advanced creation ever, designed specifically to outclass any other robot of 20XX - including the original Megaman [26]. Zero can still suffer defeat against an enemy with strength of heart [29] (as well as many allies). Remember, just as Wily created Zero, Light created X. As X can be considered a more advanced version of Mega Man [28] (equipped with the Mega Buster Mk. 17). Dr. Light may very well put X’s weapon and armor technology to good use if Rock requires such an upgrade, echoing the events of "Mega Man V" (Rockman World 5)

Magnum Opus

Light and Wily – eternal rivals – conversing their dying wishes to their last creations.

Dr. Light is remembered in history as “the father of robotics” [8], Dr. Wily as “the legendary mad scientist” [9].

Despite their differences, Wily and Light lived the last days of their lives in clear parallel. They both completed their magnum opus in secret before passing on. Dr. Light left a program with his personality to play back messages for X (which, for all intents and purposes, is the good doctor in person), whereas Dr. Wily was brought back by the virus [10] (perchance as Serges and/or Isoc, but most certainly as the ‘Old Man’ from X5). A hundred years into the future, the two continue to deliver aid in their own unique ways.

X and Zero, parallels in every way.

Humans and robots
The groundwork laid by Dr. Light led to further technological developments over the course of a century. Though certain robot designs have withstood the test of time with minor changes (Mettaurs [11] and Battons [12]) others were quickly replaced, like how state-of-the-art phones become obsolete in less than a decade [13].

Still, a century later, little progress has been made in the field of humanoid robots until Cain’s creation of the Reploids. In “Maverick Hunter X”, Dr. Light gives us a plausible explanation why: not only does he have no one to carry on his work, humanity is not yet ready to accept a robot as humanlike as X. They fear the dangers he represents.

This should come as no surprise: not only did the world suffer great fear through Dr. Wily’s repeated attempts of world domination [14], invincible combats robots have also been used as weapons of war [15].

X doing battle with the invincible combat robots of bygone days.

While Light never doubted X’s reliability for a minute, it took thirty years of ethical testing to persuade others of that fact.

Mega Man X
As early as The Power Battle, Dr. Light mentioned how robots don’t just need to increase their physical strength; they need to improve their cognitive programs. He spoke about giving robots the ability “to worry”. Like humans, they need to determine what is right and wrong by themselves [16] *4.

What robots truly need!

The first robot granted this experimental ability is Mega Man X, whose very name (the variable “X”) represents “Limitless Potential.” Created with a much more advanced A.I., he is Mega Man's successor [27].

One little known fact is that the original Japanese manual contains an extended version of X1’s “Warning” message:

WARNING

In it, Dr. Light ascribes X’s humanlike A.I. to “the act of worrying”. If extended to matters that by nature must not be questioned (e.g. if robot were to harm a human deliberately) the result would be disastrous. Humankind would tremble with fear, the like of which was unknown even in the days of the Dr. Wily incidents [14].

Though X “worries” most of all (as said in “Maverick Hunter X” *5), the Reploids have in fact inherited his ability. Based on X’s data and equipped with a “suffering circuit”, as to be biased toward neither side, they are fated to continuously worry about which side in society they should stand upon [17]. This is what gives him the ability to think, reason and act totally independently [27]. Older robots, despite having a conscience, personality and emotions [18], do not possess the same ability to disobey their human masters [19].

While Dr. Light always kept a positive outlook on the future – seeing X as the world’s hope and dreaming of human-robot coexistence – he was also a cautious man. Not only did he seal X away for 30 years ethical testing and limited X’s strength whenever possible, he also anticipated X would do battle against robots infected by computer viruses. To that end, he equipped X with the perfect virus countermeasure [20] *9. The good doctor may have dabbled in very dangerous research, he understood the risks well and took every precaution to prevent the worst possible outcome.

Zero
As a robot possessing impressive A.I. and an infinite Bassnium power source [19], Bass has gone against his own creator several times. His accidental creation and subsequent defiance led to Dr. Wily developing an energy stronger than Bassnium (the Maverick Virus, presumably) and a robot more powerful than Bass or Mega Man, or anyone.

ZERO

Chronologically, Zero first appeared in The Power Fighters when Wily showed his design to Bass (X2 form, X3 buster, no Z-saber). However, it would be some time before Wily completed this project. It would also appear that Wily ran into some difficulties. *4

Zero (X1 design) contained a flaw in his cognitive program that made him violent and unwilling to obey instructions (like Bass). For this very reason, Dr. Wily himself sealed Zero in a capsule [21] [26] *6 *9.

In 21XX, an unknown computer virus (a subspecies of Roboenza) emerged from the capsule Zero slumbered in and began driving robots mad locally [22] *7 *9. Later Zero awoke from his capsule and wiped out Garma’s unit of Maverick Hunters before doing battle with Sigma. During this confrontation, the virus infected both of them at the same time (bypassing Zero’s imperfect virus countermeasure / antibodies through a breach in his armour). This event led to Zero’s personality changing completely. Reborn as a good Reploid, he joined the Maverick Hunters [17] [23] [26] *8 *9.

Since the above may seem contradictory. It’s important to note that the Maverick Virus serves a double purpose. First, when negated by his anti-virus systems, it empowers Zero to near invincibility. Second, through direct application (X2) or overexposure (X5), the virus awakens Zero’s true self. Thereby the Maverick Hunter is not the end product of virus infection, but rather an intermediate state born from attempted correction of the Irregular Zero. Awakened Zero (not Irregular Zero) is the strongest robot Wily envisioned, subservient to his cause.

Awakened Zero, powerful, calm, collected, and under Wily’s control.

Additional Notes
*1 The US manual for “World2” gives us the name Chronos Institute for the time-space research lab and “Time Skimmer” for their time machine. Wily travelled approximately 37.426 years into the future. By this figure, the future Wily would be around 90 years of age.
*2 Mega World / Wily Wars proves that time travel to the past can change the future. A temporal loop may still occur, however.
*3 Mega Man 9 introduces a law limiting the lifespan of robots. This may further explain the future absence of older model robots (humanoid or otherwise). However, we do not know if this law persisted after the incident. Furthermore, robots like Rock and Roll are clear exceptions to the law.
*4 The Power Battle occurs after Mega Man 7, before Mega Man 8. The Power Fighters occurs half a year after Mega Man 8.This puts the full production of X and Zero quite late into the timeline.
*5 The script differs between the original X1 and Maverick Hunter X, however the two versions are not incompatible. For the purpose of this text, they’re treated as complementary.
*6 Zero’s capsule was stored inside a warehouse/store in the Rocky Mountains. This is the same approximate region in which X was also found, later dubbed the “Forbidden Area”.
*7 The English version of Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works disagrees with the Japanese original on this subject [17]. The Sigma Virus does not actually originate from X’s suffering circuit (that we know of). The circuit is however mentioned as the “true form” or “true essence” of the Sigma Virus (in function, not in origin). On the old (but now defunct) Mega Man Network forums, the person tasked with the English adaptation of the book had expressed difficulty interpreting the paragraph in question.
*8 This information echoes the early concept scenario from Mega Man Zero Official Complete Works [17], though the detail of Zero being the “first” Reploid infected seems to have changed. The Idiom Dictionary of the same book, however, does mention that Zero was discovered as the source of the virus outbreak (the only one infected with the virus initially). Furthermore, Rockman Perfect Memories reckons that Zero was born with the virus already inside of him [24], whereas Keiji Inafune claims Zero passed the virus to Sigma [25]. Given his natural immunity and close proximity, it’s quite probable that Zero became a carrier of the virus long before it affected his mind.
*9 Information from the timeline section of the Rockman Zero Collection official site has been removed during the latest overhaul. While this may discredit its validity, one can still cross-reference the information with other sources to affirm its accuracy. [26], for example, recites many of the Zero-specific details.
Q03: Has what happened in the interim between the Rockman series and the Rockman X series been decided? Or is there no canon version of what happened?
CAPCOM: Of course there is such an outline, but don’t expect an official announcement of it. Players have always enjoyed using their imaginations to come up with their own conclusions, and we wouldn’t want to take that away from them…

Q. I read that Quint is supposed to be the future Rockman who was remodeled, but does that mean that in the future Rockman loses to Dr. Wily?
A. Ah… That’s quite an inexorable situation. As we came to understand later on, in the future that “Quint” came from even Wily himself had reformed, resulting in a peaceful world that was free of conflict. As would naturally occur in such a setting, the “battle functions” had been already been removed from “Quint”. And that’s when our Wily showed up with that time machine and attacked, or so we understand.

1) Did Zero really "kill" the family between the events of the Classic Mega Man and X series?
KI: No, Zero did not kill them. According to the way I created him, Zero is not such a person--it is not in his profile.

Q02: Why aren’t the robots from the original Rockman time period still around in the Rockman X time period? Especially since there are some robots with only minor changes.
CAPCOM: When you consider that state of the art mobile phones become obsolete in less than a decade, you can imagine how after 100 years you wouldn’t expect to see too many old models still remaining. There are indeed a few Metalls and Battons and such still around albeit with minor changes, so perhaps that’s because their designs are so enduring?

[14]
http://rockmanpm.com/?p=x/rockmanx1/manuals
“X” presents many problems inconceivable in existing robots. There is a danger he may worry over or question even the absolute requirement for robots, “Do not harm a human.”
The act of worrying in “X” marks a new epoch in robotics and is the first time this experiment has succeeded, but if it extends to matters that by their nature must not be questioned, it would be disastrous. In the worst case, if a robot were to harm humans deliberately, humankind would tremble with fear the like of which was unknown even in the days of the “Dr. Wily” incidents…
I conclude that “X” is an extremely dangerous being. If I am to send “X” out into the world, he must have a verification period of 30 years at the least. However, I do not have that long to live, and regrettably there is no one who understands all my research to carry it on for me.
Therefore I seal “X” here. If by some chance there is someone who discovers this capsule, as long as “X’s” thinking has not been fully analyzed, please leave him untouched. “X” is a robot laden with both unlimited possibility and unlimited danger…

Sigma Virus
The terrifying virus that causes a Reploid to go Maverick. The virus actually originated from one of the circuits that Dr. Light installed in X's brain. The circuits function was to keep X neutral and unbiased in matters concerning humans and Reploids. Tragically, the very same circuit condemned X to a life plagued by the philosophical question that weighed the value of humans against that of Reploids - a question to which there was no answer. Zero was the first Reploid to be infected by the virus, but as an android created solely for evil, destructive purposes by Dr. Wily, the virus affected him uniquely. Instead of going Maverick, the virus turned Zero into a warrior driven by goodness, not evil. Unfortunately, by tirelessly fulfilling his destiny as a Maverick Hunter, Zero inadvertently spread the virus throughout the world. Eventually, as the host of the virus, Zero was taken to a research facility for study.

Q. Do robots like those made by Dr. Wily or Dr. Cossack have self-awareness, and can they talk? And do they run on solar energy like Rockman does?
A. I take it you’d like to know if Wily and Cossack’s robots possess “sentience”? Naturally, they each have a “consciousness”, although the level of every “cognitive circuit” embedded inside each one of them varies, producing as many different “personality” types as found in people… Just like you or I, they can speak, and have emotional responses like shyness, or anger, just as we do.
Regarding their energy systems, many of them do utilize “solar energy” in some way

Rockman Perfect Memories:
Exactly what kinds of secrets are sleeping in Zero's past?
Zero has almost no memory of the past. However, sometimes he seems to see a person resembling Dr. Wily in his dreams. And it's also said that Zero was born with the Sigma Virus already inside of him. His creation is it actually to battle with whom? One would never think it was for justice, however...

First 4 Figures Zero bio figurine:
"Zero is fearsome robot designed and built by the late Dr. Wily as his most advanced creation ever, designed specifically to outclass any other robot of the time, including the original Megaman. Due to an initial flaw in Zero’s programming, he proved to be a dangerous and unpredictable machine, refusing to follow his creator’s orders, leading to him being locked away. Following a brutal battle with Sigma upon reawakening, Zero was brought under control, and now fights as a formidable member of the Maverick Hunters alongside X."

[27]
First 4 Figures X figurine bio:
"X is the final and greatest creation of Dr. Thomas Light, and created as a successor to the original Mega Man. Unlike the original, X was created with a much more advanced A.I that allowed him to think, reason and act totally independently. Once created, X was initially sealed away by his creator, fearing that his incredibly complex mind and programming could endanger the planet should he choose to act with evil intentions. After eventually being discovered and having been awoken by Dr. Cain many years after his creation, X joins the Maverick Hunters to help fight off a new generation of renegade machines: The Reploids."

The setting of Rockman X is established about 100 years after the world of Rockman. It seems that after Dr. Light built Rockman, he developed X as a still more advanced version. Also, someone resembling Wily can be glimpsed in Zero’s vicinity.

Rockman Series / The story of Rockman Online
« on: November 15, 2010, 10:52:05 PM »
Recently we've been receiving more and more information about the story behind Rockman Online; a strange far future world was revealed to us, with little in common with the Rockman ZERO and Rockman ZX series, other than both sharing the world of classic Rockman and Rockman X as its past.

Strange for a Korean-exclusive such as this, both the quantity and quality of information given about the past leading to Rockman Online, has simply been astounding; not only have they accurately referred to the events of the end of the irregular wars as documented by Rockman ZERO, they also gave us new unique, yet fitting insight about other aspects of the Rockman world.

As such, I've been wondering for a while now; what is the canonical validity of this title in regards to the main storyline? Other than the entire premise being quite out of the ordinary, I've seen preciously little to doubt it. But I'm wondering what other people think of this and how we will treat it as a community.

Adding to this, we've just now received word that Cinnamon, from Command Mission, will be appearing in Rockman Online, with a strange mention of visions from what seems another world, in which "Neo Arcadia" exists instead.

As you may know, the games after X6, Command Mission especially, have always held an unclear relation with the story of Rockman ZERO, which has only become more unclear with the complete disregard for these titles in the Zero Collection timeline.

So what are we to think now? Does the story branch from Command Mission into Rockman Online and Rockman ZERO? Or does it begin branching as early as X6? Rockman Online definitely carries a premise highly reminiscent of X7 and beyond, which Rockman ZERO does not have, outside of ZX Advent.

So.. discuss?

Original / THE story of MEGA MAN

Combining the factoids from all regions alike, I present to you THE story of MEGA MAN! Credit to the Reploid Research Lavatory and Mega Man Network for providing the sources.

---------------------------

Quote
As a young boy Dr. Albert W. Wily always was a trouble maker, unlike the mild-mannered scientist Dr. Thomas Xavier Light. Likewise, in their younger days when Dr. Wily and Light were close associates, Wily was an enormously proud individual. So proud, that when Light achieved head of the class at the Robot Institute of Technology they attended together, he was extremely vexed. This trend continued to the present day with Dr. Light always being the one to get all the attention and accolades; aside from becoming class president winning the Nobel Prize in Physics, the LIT Manual Design Contest for four consecutive years, and so on. Dr. Wily instead always was but a nominee or a runner up. And so, it was sometime after Light becoming class president that Wily seemingly decided he would create the strongest robots to prove that he was the best in the world... though once classmates, Wily became Light's rival in professional life. It is this motivation and rivalry that would lead to him eventually being exiled from the scientific community due to the nature of his experiments, and lead him to the path of world domination and revenge. A very sorrowful state of affairs, Dr. Light believes.

After their youth, the story really begins in the twenty-first century at the lab of Dr. Light, who dreamed of creating a series of robots to handle jobs too dangerous for humans. He conceived the construction of fully-operational human-like experimental robots to perform specific everyday duties. To fulfill his dream, Dr. Light created Proto Man (Blues), his first attempt at making a humanoid robot; his first creation that moves of his own free will. As the very first humanoid robot prototype developed by him, Proto Man was one of Dr. Light's biggest achievements, one that greatly exceeded his expectations on several levels.

However, though a great achievement, Proto Man was not a success. Dr. Light found there to be a critical problem with Proto Man's power reactor. He made plans to modify and repair the robot, but Proto Man absconded before Dr. Light had a chance to. His human-like mind convinced itself that the remodeling could cause him to essentially become like a different person, so he fled to protect his sense of identity.

Unable to find Proto Man, and believing him to have died from his power defect, Dr. Light moved on to other projects. Hoping to rectify the mistakes he made with Proto Man, he created a pair of household robot; Rock and Roll, his first true success created in that order. He made them as siblings so that they would never be lonely. Rock and Roll were quickly adopted as part of the family. This motivated Dr. Light to design six more industrial robots. He hired an ambitious robot designer, Dr. Wily, to assist him in the enormous task of construction. Together, Dr. Light and his assistant Dr. Wily, encouraged by Rock's success, proceeded to develop six additional Humanoids, all programmed to perform prescribed rituals.

However, the night before the robots' unveiling, Dr. Light's lab exploded. One of Dr. Wily's experiments had gone awry and set the lab on fire. Enraged, Dr. Wily accused Dr. Light of jealousy and the intentional destruction of his experiment .That night he stole the plans for the industrial robots and disappeared, vowing to destroy Dr. Light and all of his creations. Now a dangerous maniacal old man, Dr. Light's former assistant Wily had become disloyal and was exiled from the scientific community.

It during Wily's exile, some time after Proto Man's disappearance, that ProtoMan's power reactor began to fail and he lay collapsed and dying. He was found and saved by Dr. Wily, who modified him by changing out his power reactor on top of equipping him with a buster and combat abilities. It was from this opportunity to remodel Blues that Dr. Wily gained the ability to manufacture robots at the same level as Dr. Light. Unaware of Wily's true intentions, Proto Man had become indebted to him.

One day, several Months after Wily's disappearance, the industrial robots all over the world went on a rampage and the world fell into chaos. Robots began to take control of the city. These robots were carbon copies of Dr. Light's industrial robots. Because of that, Dr. Light quickly realized that mad scientist, Dr. Wily, was behind the nefarious deed but he didn't know what to do. Eventually Dr. Light created a new robot to combat this evil. However, in order to keep this robot from turning to Dr. Wily's side, he did not create a whole robot. He created only the shell of one to be worn by a human, thereby converting the wearer into a savior robot.

After which, Dr. Light intercepted a transmission from the evil Dr.Wily. The transmission exposed Dr. Wily's plans for world domination; Dr. Wily told the world that he would kidnap and reprogram Dr. Light's humanoids as part of his world domination scheme. Rock, however, had walked in on Dr. Light intercepting the transmission and with his strong sense of justice, desired to fight against Dr. Wily's evil. Rock convinced the good Dr. Light to let him chase down and eliminate the threat of his nemesis. The robot Rock volunteered to convert himself into a combat robot, by wearing the shell instead of a human, and so became MEGA MAN, the one robot who resisted Dr. Wily's nefarious tinkering; his days as a gofer in the lab were over.

Having become Mega Man, Rock fought against Dr. Wily, who had created "Monsteropolis", a strange multi-layered and multi-faceted land of robot-like Humanoids. These robot like humanoids were created by Dr. Wily's wrongly performed experiments with human beings; they are misrepresentations of humans. Fighting through the seven empires of Monsteropolis and defeating the Empire Leaders, Mega Man would ultimately make Dr. Wily's evil designs end in failure regardless of what the evil doctor had learned about robot development from working on Proto Man.

X / Zero turned good by the Sigma Virus
« on: April 16, 2010, 05:13:58 PM »
As we all know, the story summary on the ZERO collection site has given us some brand new info covering three series.

http://www.themmnetwork.com/2010/04/09/does-the-rockman-zero-collection-storyline-explain-everything/

Said info having put the status of X7, 8 and CM into question. But let's ignore that here and focus on one particularly controversial statement in the summary; the details behind Zero's change of allegiance and the origins of Sigma Virus in relation to that.

Relevant quotes on this subject are:

Quote
Sigma Virus
Zero was the first repliroid to be infected with the Sigma Virus but
Zero which was developed by Wily to be a completely evil repliroid,
despite being infected by Sigma Virus isn't transformed into an irregular, [instead]
was reborn as a good repliroid.

1XX years ago
The birth of Zero

Zero was produced by Dr. Wily, who schemed at taking over the world. But he contained a flaw in his cognitive program that made him violent and unwilling to obey instructions, so Dr. Wily himself sealed Zero in a capsule.

1XX years ago
The Sigma Virus outbreak

A subspecies of the terrible computer virus from long ago is generated, and begins driving robots mad locally. The human leadership acknowledges these infected robots as Mavericks, and orders them to be disposed of. The source was found to be an unknown computer virus that had prevailed over 100 years ago emerging from the capsule Zero slumbered in. Later, this virus was named the Sigma Virus, after the Reploid “Sigma” who led a revolt against the human leadership.

1XX years ago
Zero awakens

Receiving information of Zero awakening from his capsule and causing violence, the Maverick Hunter Sigma finds and intercepts him. during this incident, Sigma is infected by the unknown computer virus leaking out from Zero’s capsule, but at the same time Zero, having his armor damaged in the battle with Sigma, also becomes infected with the virus. Due to this, Zero’s personality completely changed, and he would turn to working as a Maverick Hunter.

There are quite a couple of paradoxical implications in the aforementioned info. Most of all being how the virus would affect Zero to become good, even though X2 and X5 use the same virus in a completely different manner.

Given the paragraph on Zero's creation, it seems the immediate implication here is that Zero was intended to have Sigma Virus used on him to counter the flaw in his cognitive program, which seemingly worked, but not completely in the manner Wily wanted it. However that only opens a whole slew of other matters to address.

Why is Zero not infected until after Sigma damages him, even though the virus originates from his capsule? How is Zero the first infected when the virus was already infecting Repliroids prior to his awakening and turning them into the first irregulars? Not to mention the extremely close time proximity in which Sigma himself got awakened.

Not only that, but why is the capsule implicated as the origin of the virus here? This appears to contradict quite a lot of what we know. Sigma's statement to Zero in X8 comes immediately to mind but also:

Quote
Rockman X4 Himitsu Daizukan
ゼロのイレギュラーのウイルスにおかされて、シグマは、じゃあくになってしまう。
Invaded by Zero's irregular virus, Sigma became evil.

X: He was made by Dr. Right.  Will the time for his fated battle with Zero come?
Dr. Wily: The one who put the Sigma Virus in Zero is, perhaps him......

Interview with Inafune:
Sigma and Zero basically represent the idea that nothing is absolute. Sigma was a powerful leader of the Maverick Hunters but after Zero passed the virus to him, his allegiance changed.  Circumstances can change anything, and nothing is absolute.

So all in all, there's a lot we have to reconcile here. I'm personally thinking Zero's natural virus immunity lies at the root of all this, but I'd like to hear other people's thoughts about this subject.

Zero / MegaMan Zero, then and now.
« on: September 05, 2009, 06:26:37 PM »
Disclaimer: really long post, please bear with me.

As we all know, the writing process of the MegaMan Zero series was a process of constant alterations, through retcon or otherwise, having to deal with it's own contuinity and that of the X-series all at the same time. For some time now, I've been analyzing the first game in the ZERO series to figure out the source of the current convoluted canon and why things are as they are now.  All in all, this just me trying to collect my thoughts on the progression of the plot from ZERO to ZERO2 in the hope of giving some nice insight on it.

---

Three key moments in developement changed the face of the series forever.
-The release of MegaMan X6 by another team.
-The choice of Copy-X as the final boss a month before release.
-The writing of the sequel that was never intended.

Most of the time, the release of X6 (and subsequently X7 and beyond) is blamed for the convoluted state of the current ZERO series. Whilst certainly true, Zero went from dead to being sealed, I've started to see that most of the issues that exist today are caused by IntiCreates never having intended a sequel during the writing of ZERO and making a few hasty choices in regards to writing in Copy-X a month before release, instead of the release of X6. In doing so, a lot of plot elements are turned upside down and Inti had to 'make a few complicated explanations real fast.' There are quite a few elements that will later lead to contradictions.

Anyway, supposing familairity with the timeline as it is as of the release of MMZOCW, this is the timeline from a solely ZERO1/RTRZ perspective, I've bolded RTRZ's contribution (you can skip this quote if it gets too long:

Quote
ZERO1/RTRZ timeline:
-The fall of the giant colony "Eurasia" during the Maverick Wars (events of MegaManX5), this was the single disaster that caused the greatest degree of damage. A punishment that drove an ugly hole into mother earth, causing catastrophic damage to the troposphere, and people could not reap the benefits of the "blessings of the sea" for a long time.
>
-X and Zero save the world together. (100 years before ZERO1, Zero's weapon is one of the legendary ten shining arms.)
>
-Zero speaks with a scientist to have something removed from his systems, the scientist is unsure if it is even possible, but if all goes well, it will take 102 years. Zero goes to sleep and leaves future incidents in X's care. (100 years before ZERO1, Zero ending of RockmanX6.)
>
-Andrew was a sailor and meets a beautiful young human lady and is touched by her singing.
>
-Andrew spends time with her and they fall in love, eventually begin to live together.
>
-The lone hero X ends the Maverick Wars after 100 years of fighting without Zero but has afterward mysteriously become a cyber elf. Ciel creates Copy-X and together they create Neo Arcadia at the center of rebirth. The long, drawn out Maverick Wars resulted in mankind's very existence being threatened, due to the immeasurably damaged state of the earth's environment, especially the damage caused by the Eurasia space colony. Aiming to rebuild the world of man, Neo Arcadia established two primary objectives. One, the eradication of the Iregulars who had been the cause of the wars; and two, to revive the earth's environment for expanding the region of human habitation. Therefore, from both the sea and the air a large-scale tropospheric control operation for the rejuvenation of the environment was conducted. The, Four Guardians, Big4 of X-Bioroid (Harpuia, Leviathan, Fafnir, Phantom), are created for this purpose. Operating a giant weather control mechaniloid, Harpuia brought about a blessing wind of hope to the people. From the main shaft of Neo Arcadia, Leviathan, who was created in order to bring back the favor of the goddess of the sea, used her abilities to do her part for the operation. Phantom and the Zan'ei unit act as "X"'s personal safeguard and defenders, Fafnir's current activities are unspecified.
-Andrew's life partner grows old and begins to resent her looks compared to Andrew. Ciel changes Andrew into and old man to make her happy. She later passes away.
>
-The government starts fearing Reploids will become irregular, and for unjust reasons that became more and more commonplace, the Reploids are punished by disposal one after another. Ciel participated in the exploitation of the Reploids because of the government, but could not shoot those to be punished and tried to cover the stigma of Irregularity.
>
-Ciel begins to live with the Reploids who have been targeted for destruction (the Resistance) and have escaped to the half-collapsed ruins of an old city, where the small ammount of energy still remaining there has kept them alive. Because of this situation Ciel, who is now the leader of the Resistance, wants to develop a subsitute energy, and because of her superior talent as a scientist, there are no alternate ideas concerning a new energy source for everyday life. One of the Reploids with the Resistance is a girl Ciel named Alouette who never felt kindness from others when she lived Neo Arcadia. Everything changed when she met Ciel, she even began to think of the importance of their existance.
>
-To use military force to combat Mavericks and Resistance members who escaped Neo Arcadia to the wastelands, Neo Arcadia developed the "Scorched Earth Operation" in which extermination attacks were performed. A roller strategy involved carpet bombing, and deployment of an enormous ground force for total supremacy. These severe tactics strike terror into all Irregulars who witness it. If the fighting ahead isn't ceased immediately, they will never know another peaceful night's sleep. At the forefront of the Scorched Earth Operations, a Fafnir's form can always be made out. Likewise, iIn Neo Arcadia, those who can escape under suspicion of Iregularity are few, and those who can survive long are even fewer, because many who try to hide are quickly discovered and dealt with by the oppressive Zan'ei unit which has become and anti-Iregular, anti-Resistance intelligence unit. The other Units and Guardians also focus their attention on Mavericks and the Resistance.
>
-The demonic hand of the government finally approaches even those Resistance Reploids who have lived quiet lives. They're cornered. At this rate, they will all die. Ciel remembers the name of the Legendary Reploid "Zero", who even now sleeps in a certain place.. If the legends is true, maybe he can save them. She therefore seeks out to find Zero.
>
-Harpuia battles the Resistance at the remains of the laboratory called the "historic ruins." He was "hunting" the Resistance's leader, the young human girl Ciel whose capture should have proven to end the fighting. Standing in his way, was a single red repliroid; Zero. Starting the events of MegaManZERO. (100 years after Zero and X saved the world, 100 years after Zero's seal, Andrew's life partner has long since passed away, Ciel age 14)

With the release of ZERO2 and ZERO3. A lot of the above points either become invalidated or are moved around. Most notably:
-Neo Arcadia's founding. (Current event, ZERO1 - 100 years ago, ZERO2+)
-The Big4's creation. (Current event, ZERO1 - 100 years ago, ZERO2+)
-Zero's being sealed twice. (Introduction of Elf Wars inbetween two 100 year gaps instead of a single 100 year gap from X6 to ZERO.)

The biggest reason I find for this is: Dark Elf.

When Dark Elf is introduced into the plot, IntiCreates found themselves with a small issue; the Maverick Wars ended quite recently,  likewise, Neo Arcadia is made quite recently as well. But, Dark Elf is a rather mysterious force, like mythological. As such, Dark Elf is said to be 100 years old. And then, with the antagonistic forces of Omega and Weil applied, as well X's mysterious dissappearence; Neo Arcadia suddenly has a centennial history under its ruler X.

The above choice of a centennial history changes the timeline completely; Neo Arcadia and the Big4's time of creation gets increasingly confusing, Ciel gets some quick explanation on how she made Neo Arcadia whilst it already existed, X's sealing of Dark Elf is somewhere in timeline limbo and Zero suddenly has to undergo two sealings.

Going by the above premise, this is why we got two sealing events instead of one, a direct result of Inti's desire for super contuinity with X's final words during the first game:

With a founding of 100 years ago, Zero could be present to end the war. However, the story is clear; X is a lone hero that ended the war and fought for 100 years without Zero. Despite this, X and Zero saved the world together, 100 years ago? How can X fight for 100 years when there is no war after Neo Arcadia's founding? How can X be a lone hero when Zero wasn't sealed yet? How can X and Zero save the world together when X is a lone hero that ended the war, and fought a century without Zero?

This direct contradiction is the cause for nearly every change revolving around Zero and Omega's backstory. There was only one conclusion to fix the above; Elf Wars and two sealings.

From X6's ending to Elf Wars, 100 years. From Elf Wars another 100 years to ZERO, with Omega and Zero's innate relation right in the middle of all that. All of this is the strange outcome of one change having long lasting effects on everything else.

In a similar case, Mother Elf's very existance as the Sigma Antibody Program demands that Mavericks can't exist in the ZERO timeframe, yet Neo Arcadia fearfully deems all Reploids as a Maverick. In order to explain this ungrounded fear, Inti took the simple concept of the Resistance's substitute energy and turned it into the large scale energy crisis which led to the unjust retirement of Reploids under a bullshit explanation of Maverick behaviour.

I hope the above gives some nice insight in why the series turned out as it did. There's a lot more material to cover, such as how some changes affected the Big4 and other details such as the Shining Arms, but this had gotten way too long. By primary point is how X6 and the other X-games are not really to blame for the convoluted state of affairs; they do add to it, but are not the primary cause. I feel that what happened with the story was mostly unavoidable and a result of too many grandiose ideas limited by a game by game release basis.

If anybody has any alternate hypothesis, feel free to share.

Fan Creations / The story of "The Four"

Story Two: Fire shows the road.

The world was set ablaze. That is, the fire of war engulfed the battlefield drenched in blood.

A once proud and prosperous nation had fallen. Even though its soldiers were still fighting on the front lines, the damage had already been done; everything was reduced to nothing.

Unaware of the loss of their loved ones; friends, family and children, soldiers continued to fight to protect what they had already lost.

But the endless Maverick march continued.

The sound of gunfire never ended; and one by one they fell.

...

"You weaklings! Stand up and fight!"

She yelled at them with discontent, even though she knew very well that the comrades she had fought alongside with had given more than they had ever given.

Whilst looking at their valiant effort, she realized that the true potential of people is brought out on the battlefield.

But still, it was not enough.

She's the last one standing...

After all, if they had just held on a little longer, would the tides of war not have turned to grant them victory?

"Ch..."

Since this battle started, her finger had not left the trigger. With her measly standard issue gun, she mowed down entire legions of Mavericks called "Galleons".

She is Atlas. Her origins are nothing special, she's but a defenseless civilian turned a soldier. But now being a proud soldier of a fallen nation, she showed how special she truly is.

The Mavericks fell just as her comrades have; one by one, but their numbers never did decrease.

It is as she always expected.

More and more Mavericks appeared. Hence, there is no victory. But even so, victory must be attained. That is because Atlas would not forgive herself if her own mortality stopped the evolution of her true self.

"Ugh!..."

A bullet struck her shoulder.

Ignoring the pain, she relentlessly shot down the one that hit her.

It has been like this since the battle started; mowing down Mavericks, taking hits but dodging vital blows, and then mowing down the Mavericks that hit her.

...

As she refused to weaken, the situation hadn't changed for many hours. Watching from behind the scorching flames, a certain somebody is enticed by this fact.

"She's a Chosen One, no doubt about it."

With a grin on his face, he watched on with a kind of enjoyment born from relief. Finally, he has found what he was looking for.

But... she is too good. For how long this battle has lasted, he knew she can hold out twice more than that. With the country already destroyed, having found what he was looking for, why would he wait even longer?

Even though he is called the Reaper, he does not wish to be around all this death much longer;  the raid reminded him of that which he'd much rather forget.

However, he, Prometheus, should never forget.

He despised this disgusting memory, but still, it is an evil he must accept. Within the sounds of the raid that he so hates, he had finally found another one.

This Chosen One brought him one step closer to his goal.

...

A silhouette different form the Galleons emerged from the flames.

Atlas wasn't startled, all she could think was: 'the leader has finally appeared.'

Swiftly her attention shifted and the gun fired several shots at the new adversary.

But it was worthless.

The enemy wielded an energy scythe; by it, all her bullets were effortlessly deflected.

Again she fired, the result didn't change.

Atlas now found herself face to face with the myth the Hunters call 'the Reaper'.

With speed unknown to her, the scythe slashed and she came to the sudden realization that she had never before known what strength was.

"Do you want power?"

The Reaper asked 'her', the enemy he has just brought to her knees.

The question drove itself into her mind; it was exactly the right question.

"I want to evolve." She replied.

...

She accepted the man's offers without hesitation.

"MegaMan is the evolution of man."

Having seen his power, she knew this was the truth.

"Do you have what it takes to be king?"

Of course she does. If this is a battle royale to determine who shall rule the world. Who else than she who wishes to evolve with each and every battle is suited to be the evolution known as the MegaMan King?

...

Within the flames of war, she was given power.

Within the flames of power, the road became clear.

Like wind drives away the fog, fire clears the road.

When she is done, there will be no enemies in front of her.

All will be destroyed.

Burned to ashes by her evolution.

X / Sigma Virus
« on: April 06, 2009, 10:41:28 PM »
Reading around forums a bit, I notice that to this date people seem to still be confused about matters of the Sigma Virus, especially the "suffering circuit"...

So... since I haven't written out in a while, at least not in a thread of its own, I just felt like trying to explain it as simple as possible again. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong. >.>

The short version:

The Virus comes from Zero as it was put in there by Wily. Wily made it to make robots with mental capabilities similar to X, such as Zero himself, into irregulars.

The long version:

"(Mental) Suffering Circuit" (Kunou Kairo).
The 'Localizer' for UDON's MMZOCW does not understand Japanese and did not understand Three Keys. He, like many fans, felt like it tarnished all previous known facts, but he tried to localize it to the best of his abilities by rewriting the translation he was given using his own knowledge of the series. These changes are most noticeable in the first key "Sigma Virus". As such, I'll be sticking to the Japanese version, unless I do not have a translation at hand..

First and foremost, remember the disclaimer added above the Three Keys section: "The information that follows comes from the early concept phases for the Zero series' scenario, and therefore may not be canonical."

Secondly, remember that unlike the English version, the Japanese version is not unambiguous, it is completely vague and purposely so.

The dreadful Sigma Virus that transforms repliroid to irregular.
The true form/essence of which, was a (mental) suffering circuit Right inserted into X during the time of his creation.
A repliroid which possesses a suffering circuit,
in regards to a society where humans and repliroids coexist,
so as to be biased towards neither side,
it is fated always to worry continuously as to which side it should stand upon.

Notes:
-The first line is clear and factual, well established knowledge.
-True form/True essence is not concretely defined, it can mean anything. Definitely not as concrete as the word "origin". One has to ask oneself, what is the true essence of Sigma Virus?
-A circuit in Rockman is a physical object, not disembodied data. The word is used a lot in both classic and X to describe parts of the body that operate mental or physical aspects of a Repliroid.
-Line three to six talk about the circuit functioning as it should within Repliroids along with its purpose.

Keeping in mind the vagueness here, the following conclusions can be made from the first key:
-There's an innate connection between Sigma Virus, it's ability to turn Repliroids into Irregulars and the suffering circuit. Which can be described as "true form/essence."
-X and by extension "Repliroids", have that circuit within them.
-Zero, who's the primary subject of the text, is described as a being developed to be a (completely evil) "Repliroid" a few lines later; he should have the circuit from birth inside of him.
-The proper functioning and purpose of the circuit accurate describes X's worrying.

The canon establishes the following:
-X's worrying is the quantum leap in robotics. It's his most important feature, that which allows him to feel and make decisions of his own accord; in much more simplified terms "free will."
-X's worrying is on a different level from other Repliroids.
-Cain did not understand all of X's systems and made adjustments.
-Faults in a Repliroid's electronic brain could be a reason for Irregulars.
-The Sigma Virus turns Repliroids into Irregulars by rewriting Repliroid programming; DNA programs. A Copy Chip reverts Repliroid DNA to its original form and allows for Sigma Virus immunity.

So, as should be clear, the Sigma Virus overwrites free will and X's worrying creates it; they're each other's polar opposites.

In order not to overwrite the "faults in brain" concept with the "Virus" as the series continues, it makes sense to consider Three Keys the following way: the connection between Sigma Virus and the circuit is that Sigma Virus targets the faults in the circuit, part of a Repliroid's brain. When comparing this to a biological virus, there always is some innate relation between "target" and "attacker" in order to have any effect.

That's the simplest way I can put it. Though one should take Three Keys with a grain of salt, regardless. Details could still be changed in the future and the text's vagueness might make even this not wholly correct. However, I do feel it is important not to go overboard and claim it's the "origin". The actual "canon" should never be overwritten by "may not be canon", it should merely be reviewed with the context of the established canon.

Again, "origin" is not specified. But that begs the question, what is its origin? How does Zero tie into all this?

Origin of Sigma Virus

To be short and to the point, the origin of Sigma Virus is Zero and the origin of Zero is Wily. Therefore, its creator too, is Dr. Wily. This is vital, as it's completely reversed from the misinterpretation of Three Keys that would try to blame X and Right. Certainly X and Right are factors, but most important is Wily.

Dr. Wily the legendary mad scientist.

Loosely quoted from Power Fighters:
"With this robot and that completed. The world will be mine!"
Referred to in the English game as Wily's other project.

From Rockman Perfect Memories (the book):
Exactly what kinds of secrets are sleeping in Zero's past?
Zero has almost no memory of the past.  However, sometimes he seems to see a person resembling Dr. Wily in his dreams.  And it's also said that Zero was born with the Sigma Virus already inside of him. His creation is it actually to battle with whom?  One would never think it was for justice, however...
X: He was made by Dr. Right.  Will the time for his fated battle with Zero come?
Dr. Wily: The one who put the Sigma Virus in Zero is, perhaps him......

Though surely Capcom does not give straight answers, the implication is obvious: Wily put the Sigma Virus inside of Zero.

RZOCW continues to hint at the Zero origin by calling Zero the "first infected" with "Sigma Virus", which is the whole point of his admission into the research institute; his dark past that haunts him.

"Zero which was developed by Wily to be a completely evil repliroid"

Zero who was developed by Wily to be a "Repliroid" having X's suffering circuit inside of him who was intended to be "evil". The "evil"Sigma Virus that turns "Repliroids" into Irregulars. Zero who was an irregular before he lost to Sigma.

Certainly the original purpose of Sigma Virus is to make Zero an irregular; an evil Repliroid.

The biggest oddity to many people here would be the used terminology of "Repliroid" and "Sigma Virus". Both these words post-date X and Zero's creations, yet are used to refer to matters that predate the people responsible for these names, Cain and Sigma.

-Repliroids are the robots that resemble humans (mentally) as closely as possible.
-Sigma Virus is the Virus that came from Zero that infected Sigma and became part of him.

The most important conclusion to be made here; what was within Zero was always a Virus, not some odd merger of codes as some Three Keys interpretations cling too. What one simply has to conclude is that the Virus was built to work within Zero, who has the suffering circuit, therefore the innate connection.

To further reference the origin with Wily and Zero. Rockman X8 has Sigma talk to Zero about that matter "Virus from that DNA" (US: "your virus").

Inafune in his recent interview certainly helps to confirm a lot of the aforementioned origin:

"Sigma was a powerful leader of the Maverick Hunters but after Zero passed the virus to him, his allegiance changed. Circumstances can change anything, and nothing is absolute."

"A large amount of time has passed between the classic series and Mega Man X. Dr. Wily had died in the interim but was brought back by the virus."

Certainly it's quite weird to think that the Virus that brought Wily back would be anything other than his own creation. Relating to all of this is how Sigma's turn of allegiance was an unplanned matter of circumstance and exactly how the Virus transferred to Sigma. But that's a topic on its own.

I hope this topic helped to explain the matter, served as a gentle reminder, insulted your intelligence with redundancy, or trampled on your reality.

Feel free to tell me I'm wrong!!!

X / Timeline of X
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:26:40 AM »
Because people found the previous version too confusing, I decided to rewrite this timeline. I've taken care to include more detail in each entry and incorporate even the latest info given to us by japanese translation and producer interviews.

Global Timeline:

MHX, the Day of Sigma || X1, The Sigma Rebellion Incident (21XX, 2114+)
=>
X2, The X-hunter Incident (6 months after X1)
=>
XC,  Xtreme, The Mother Computer Hacking Incident (Many years after X was found.)
||
Megamisson (3 months after X2)
=>
X3, The Doctor Doppler Incident (Several months after Doppler Town is founded several months after X2)
=>
MegaMission2, VS Revenge Limited (2 months after X3)
=>
MegaMission3, VS Hyper Limited
=>
XS, Xtreme2, The Soul Eraser Incident
=>
X4, The Repliforce War (Several months after X3)
=>
X5, The Falling Colony Incident (Several months after X4)
=>
X6, The Nightmare Virus Incident (Three weeks after X5)
=>
X7, The Red Alert Incident (Long Time after X6)
=>
X8, Paradise Lost
=>
XCM (22XX, 2202+)

Main Timeline:

20XX
-Ending to MegaMan: The Power Battle. Dr. Light has realized what robots need, they need to be able to worry, to determine right and wrong for themselves.
=>
20XX
-Ending to MegaMan2: The Power Fighters.  The design of the girly-looking robot Zero is shown to Bass. Dr. Wily informs Bass that his energy source Bassnium used to be the most powerful energy on earth and that its creation was a mistake. Wily has learned from his mistake and given Zero an even more powerful energy source. Wily threatens that once his new creation and “that” (his other project) are completed MegaMan and Bass will be killed and the world will be his.
=>

20XX
(
-Dr. Thomas Light is developing his greatest masterpiece, a new robot called “MegaManX”, an advanced version of MegaMan who he equipped with an ability to “worry” which marks a new epoch in robotics. X’s construction is carried out inside of an open capsule, there he is activated by Dr. Light for the first time. The doctor introduces himself and tells X that his name is a variable that represents limitless potential. Dr. Light emphasizes that X is a new type of robot which can think for himself.

-X is once again activated by Dr. Light, he converses with him yet again, he tells X of how similar he is to humans such as Dr. Light. But, that’s also why Dr. Light is afraid that mankind isn’t quite ready to accept him. They might view X’s limitless evolutionary potential as something to be feared. He informs X that his name also carries connotations of danger.  (Dr. Light has notably aged since the previous scene)
=>
Dr. Light has completed X and activates him one last time. He informs X that he didn’t have enough time to see X enter the world. Dr. Light says he has given X the ability to think, to worry, to grow and to evolve as he fights, but he emphasizes that it is too soon for that power to be unleashed. Dr. Light believes X will fight for justice and for hope, he tells X that he wants X to use that conscience of his to fight for the people of the future and that they will need someone like X to guide them. Saying his farewell, he closes the capsule sealing X away whilst telling him he is the world’s one true hope. (Dr. Light has notably aged since the previous scene, his health has deteriorated.)
=>
Having sealed away X, he leaves behind a warning message (written on September 18, 20XX) in which the people of the future are informed about X’s abilities and the dangers he may hold. He also mentions how it’s an unfortunate fact that human life is short and fleeting, meaning that he himself can not confirm the safety of the X future and there is no one to whom he can entrust his research. Thus Dr. Light has decided to seal X away hoping that someday he will be discovered in a far-flung future where he’ll fight valiantly for peace. To assure the people of the future X is not a danger he has the capsule test the reliability of X’s internal systems for 30 years.  As a final reassurance, Dr. Light also urges that X is the hope of the world and of himself.
=>
After sealing X, Dr. Light dies, likely of old age. But before that he has also ensured to leave behind a program that will play messages for X to guide him. This program also supplies X with equipment such as armor and other upgrades. The program that plays these messages seems to have been given Dr. Light’s personality. Because of this, it can be thought that the program is actually Dr. Light brought back from the dead.

-Dr. Wily’s greatest masterpiece Zero is under construction by him, this construction is carried out inside a capsule throughout the entire process and sometimes it involves automation using assembly line robotics. At one point during this creation process Zero is activated and he sees his creator standing ominously in front of world map. In his recollection of this scene upon his ‘death’ during the events of X5, he remarks not knowing who this person is, but he does realize that the robot that is being made is something that destroys other robots and  that this robot is himself.
=>
-Completing Zero as much as possible (with a different design then the one he had previously shown Bass) Dr. Wily seals away Zero for the future. In doing so he gives his greatest masterpiece a mission to “destroy MegaManX”. Because Dr. Wily created Zero to be a completely evil robot, he put inside of Zero’s DNA a Virus, that would later be known as the Sigma Virus, that would awaken him to his true self.
=>
Dr. Wily dies, presumably of old age. However, thanks the Sigma Virus he put inside Zero he would be brought back to life in the next century.

-Cain’s journal entry of April 9: Cain has set up camp at his new site, he laid preliminary groundwork out in a grid pattern and starting excavating. His instruments gave a strange reading on Block E-46 of this grid. A metallic substance seems to be buried several meters below the surface. Dr. Cain intends to dig there tomorrow.

-Cain’s journal entry of April 10: Several meters below the surface Dr. Cain discovers the remains of a laboratory in ruins. At length he found writings indicating that the laboratory belonged to the famed robotics engineer Dr. Thomas Light. Looking through Dr. Light’s notes he sees that Dr. Light was making great advances and the notes keep referring to “the capsule”.

-Cain’s journal entry of April 13:
Dr. Cain discovers the capsule. 14m tall by 8m wide, the capsule was hidden beneath a collapsed ceiling. Dr. Cain finds it odd that although the building is in rubble, the capsule alone was preserved intact. At the time Dr. Cain found it, it was running some sort of diagnostic functions. There was a warning not to touch the capsule, but all the indicators were green, which means safety. Dr. Cain concludes it’s probably okay to open it and intends to find out tomorrow.

-Cain’s journal entry of April 15:
Cain has tried skimming through Dr. Light’s design notes and is amazed, according to him an amazing quantum leap in robotics is described there. Using these notes Dr. Cain believes he may be able to replicate Dr. Light’s design concept to produce a new generation of robots with that design integrated into them. He intends to begin transporting X and Dr. Light’s notes back to his lab tomorrow.

-Cain’s journal entry of November 22:
Using X as a reference Dr. Cain has completed his first “Reploid”. Dr. Cain doesn’t completely understand how the system Dr. Light  built operates, but he tried to make some revisions to it. After these revisions, the Reploid became fully functional. This Reploid, who would come to be known as “Sigma” has unlimited strength and intelligence. He seems to be fully capable of making decisions and Dr. Cain was even capable of debating with it.

-Cain’s journal entry of May 3: For the last few weeks, Reploids have been running an assembly line and shown themselves to be capable of doing even difficult tasks with ease. Dr. Cain had thus tried putting them to work with humans. The sight was rather odd, but the humans seemed to accept them gladly.  (US:January 3)

-Cain’s journal entry of July 16:
Three Reploids became “Maverick,” and were shut down because they injured two people.
This is the third case of this kind of defect in Reploids, and Dr. Cain has no idea what the cause is. Some say that they had better stop the creation of Reploid. However, Dr. Cain thinks otherwise because the humans have become too Dependant on Reploids. (US:February 16)

-Cain’s journal entry of November 20:
The council has had last decided to set up a countermeasure.
They’ve decided to establish a “Hunter” group to destroy Reploids that have gone Maverick before they can inflict harm on a human. The Reploid called Sigma has been appointed as the leader of the Hunters (Commander of 17th Elite Unit.) Sigma is a Reploid of the highest intelligence, one of the most intelligent Dr. Cain created and is equipped with Dr. Cain’s latest circuit design. Sigma has the talent to cope with any problem. (US: February 16, same as previous entry.)

-Cain’s journal entry of December 10:
Sigma has been commanding the Maverick Hunters for about two years now. The actions of Sigma and his staff of Hunters have stopped Irregulars from harming humans. According to Cain it’s time everyone breathed a sigh of relief. At the same time, Dr. Cain is a bit concerned about X. X seems to lack the self-confidence to progress on the course Dr. Light planned for him. But Dr. Cain is also sure that, with time, X will find his own path in life. (US: Sigma has been commanding the Maverick Hunters for about two months now, May 16)

He is officially discovered in the same area where X and other ancient technology was also discovered, an area that because of this was made forbidden, giving it the name of “Forbidden Area.”
=>
-After wiping out Garma’s unit, Maverick Hunters succeed in cornering Zero inside of an abandoned warehouse in the Rocky Mountains. To avoid sacrificing any more men, Sigma decides to face this red Maverick by himself. During the battle, Zero tatters Sigma’s pride and self-confidence, taking great pleasure in torturing Sigma after having ripped off one of his arms in combat. Sigma eventually manages to get the upper hand by punching Zero in the head as Zero experiences a mysterious headache phenomena, displaying a “W” inside of his helmet gem. As a result of this battle the Sigma Virus transfers from Zero to Sigma. After the battle Sigma orders the red Maverick to be brought to Dr. Cain for study.
=>
-After Dr. Cain’s study, Zero awakens and shows no sign of Maverick behavior. Zero has miraculously transformed into a good Reploid and forgotten about his original objective to destroy X. Cain reports that today, Sigma went Maverick, and took nearly all of the Hunters with him.
Cain notes that his motive is unclear, but he seems to have the false impression humans are inferior, and has pronounced “judgment” blaming humans for the arrested development of Reploids. Therefore, Sigma has decided, “Humans must be exterminated.” Cain also notes that most people are hiding, or trying to flee from the city. He doesn’t know how long humans will be able to withstand Sigma and he fears they built too many Reploids.
X diligently reports news of the fight against Sigma to Dr. Cain. He doesn’t know whether X can win or not, but he won’t stop him because something needs to be done. Other notable events:
-The death of Rose's boyfriend; He was caught in a Maverick raid. He suffered for two days before finally dying. Thanks to this tragedy, Rose decided to become a nurse.
-The great great great great great great grandfather of Lucia, the human girl who sells you bread used to work in a village bakery. He learned his secret recipe for making delicious bread from an old Reploid.
-Model A's creation occurred a long time ago, but after the creation of Model V and Ciel's BioMetals. It is left behind in ruins for the Chosen One that would carry on his plans: Grey.
-The Hunter's Guild was established centuries before ZXA, after the fall of Neo Arcadia and the 2 year peace period. They discovered the Ice Darts hermit crab mechaniloid during that time frame.
-Soundsketch: Grey Capsule occurs anytime before ZXA and seemingly covers multiple time periods. Among other things, Pandora and Prometheus are discussing "Codename: Grey" and him being Albert's spare.
-Grey's creation postdates Model A's or occurred at approximately the same time. (14 years before ZX + Cold Sleep + Reploid Age Uncertainty.)
-Long ago the world was thrown into terror by Crickaleap mechaniloids. An outbreak of the hoppers resulted in hundreds of casualties and they have been much feared ever since.
-Atlas's country was destroyed by Mavericks.
-Siarnaq was left for dead by his Hunter comrades.

Notes:
-Humans and Reploids alike are unaware of the existence as Cyber-Elves. They have disappeared.
-Both Human and Reploids are turned into elves upon death through means seemingly related to Model W.
-The package Giro Express is ordered to transport is both Model X and Model Z. However, only Model X has recently been discovered. Model Z has been in Giro's possession for some time.
-The equality laws allow humans to be given Machine Bodies for the sake of an extended lifespan and durability after a certain age. Humans that have been given machine bodies are given a collation ID - a Hu Number (Hu meaning Human) - to indicate their flesh body's retention. Reploids are allowed to have human mortality, finite lifespans, which are activated the moment the Electronic Brain is. Those people originally Reploid are marked with a triangle on their forehead.
-The Sage Trinity (Three Wise Men) have lived for several hundred years and were originally human. They've expanded their lives by making use of Machine Bodies.
-Old Model Reploids seem to have no triangle marking to distinguish them from humans. But their lifespan settings are the same as any other. Prairie is not considered an old model Reploid, her marking is hidden under the hat she wears.
-Siarnaq, the Model P Mega Man was formerly a Hunter as an assassin. Ashe does not appear to know him.
-Atlas, the Model F MegaMan was a military member of a dead country destroyed by Mavericks.
-Ashe is a descendant of Albert's from the family he left behind when he was still human.
-When Model A was created, ciphers were placed within him. These ciphers would unlock as Model A gained combat data. Subsequently all information of Albert's plans would be relayed to the Model A MegaMan. Intended to mimic Albert's abilities of True A-Trans which comes from Model W, Model A has the ability of A-trans. Though Albert named Model A as Model Albert after himself, the issue of the consciousness within the BioMetal is not adressed. It might or might not be the S-class Maverick Hunter Axl.
-It is uncertain whether or not the given age of Reploids matches its actual lifespan or whether it is simply appearance/personality age only. Furthermore, whilst certain Reploids start their life as children, not all Repliroids do. This uncertainty mostly affects Girouette and Grey's given age. The uncertainty of Grey's age is furthermore affected by a lack of aging whilst in Cold Sleep.
-Grey was intended as the Model A MegaMan. Albert's back up existence. In case Albert was ever defeated, Grey would take his place on the world's throne. He has no established life prior to becoming an experiment as he's DAN-003, a creation of Albert's.
-Though the 4 were given Biometals after the events of MegaMan ZX, their time in Cold Sleep is unknown.
-Giroutte Express as a company was created as part of Guardian to cover up Girouette's identity as a Chosen One. Employees and clients are unaware of Girouette's ties to Guardian. Girouette Express was established any time in Giro's lifetime before the Cinq Ville Area H (Amusement Park) attack, after he had acquired Model Z and as a result of him being seen by Prairie wielding the Model Z. Prairie finally understood the reason for the order to protect raid survivors given by the First Commander and Girouette Express was established to enact this order. It is not clear whether Girouette was a Guardian before that one raid where Prairie witnessed him with the Model Z.
-It is uncertain when Slither Inc was first established by Serpent except that it most certainly postdates the destruction of Neo Arcadia and the 2 year peace period. It is however something he could have had even during his time as a Guardian. During the Cinq Ville crisis, his company was already around to step up against the Mavericks. It should be made clear that the Mavericks were a big factor in the energy crisis and that issue was mostly solved by force against the Mavericks through the establishing of a security force by Serpent. It is furthermore the case that his company seemingly employs System C.I.E.L. on grand scale. The system is also seemingly demonstrated in the Guardian's Grand Nuage, Guardian Base. Legion's Sage Trinity has not given it special mention during the revisit to Slither Inc HQ in ZXA and usage of the system should probably be seen as something normal.
-Vent and Aile both exist together within the universe of the ZX-series. However, there is a case of "same world's different story." In other words, two different stories are told in the world of ZX. In Vent's story, Vent and Aile both work at Girouette Express and by chance Vent is brought along with Girouette starting the events of the first ZX game, Aile is left behind at Girouette Express. In Aile's story, it is exactly the opposite. Vent's story then leads into Ashe's story where she acquires the Model A and Aile's story leads into Grey's Story. Regardless of whose story you are playing, these characters all exist together, all are Chosen Ones that have the potential to be Mega Men and their backstories have all happened. It is just that when Vent is a Mega Man, Aile can't be one. It is the same for the relation between Grey and Ashe, for them their respective intro stages are completed and the split happeneds when one becomes a Mega Man instead of the other. In the cases of an event being reliant on one of these 4 being a Mega Man that event is designated as belonging to either the Vent/Ashe Story or the Aile/Grey Story. However, it should be made clear that an event exclusive to one story probably has a counterpart in the other story. The ZX Anime Commercial proposes a third alternative story, where both Vent and Aile become a MegaMan, this is however not accepted in game canon.

Oddities:
-Giro acts as if the transformation is a first toward Vent. To Aile however he makes no such implication and refers to Model Z as his partner. By also noting that Aile doesn't know how to fight, he indirectly implies he does know how to fight, especially with a BioMetal. The truth is revealed in ZX Tunes; he had Model Z from the start. He lied to Vent, production staff theorize this is because of the different feelings he holds for Aile compared to Vent.
-Many characters refer to the events of Zero4 as hundreds of years ago. Model L only refers to it as a hundred years ago, a mistranslation, she too refers to multiple hundred years. Furthermore, an interview with ZX's producer reveals ZX is actually 200 years after ZERO, despite this not being stated explicitly in the game. Thus making all potential other single hundred year entries incorrect.
-A great wartime cameraman with unspecified gender is mentioned in ZX. This probably Neige from ZERO4. However, the English game refers to this person as male whilst the Japanese game is gender ambiguous on the matter.
-It is said that the BioMetal Model X was left behind by the First Commander after she made it. The mission description for the Model P pseudoroid Protectos however reads that this area is a lab with a similar layout to the one where the first commander "discovered" Model X. It seems to be the case that the Guardians at that point in the game assumed First Commander was the one that discovered the Biometals because they were unaware of the creator, it's only later revealed that the First Commander created them.

X / Megamission translation

Also using google's magic, I found this a few weeks ago:

http://asadori.blogspot.com/search/label/Megamission%201

The translation was done by "Asadori", the card where X (Ikusu) is introduced is missing and it doesn't seem to be that good of a translation. Still, along with Rockman Tanjou's translation of the manga, it helps with the understanding of Megamission.

Because the above site suffers from occasional automatic redirects, I'm quoting the translation here:

DASH / Namco x Capcom translation
« on: November 10, 2008, 12:34:55 AM »
Using the magic of google, I stumbled upon this:

http://faqs.neoseeker.com/Games/PS2/namco_x_capcom_script.txt

A translation of NxC's plot. As it never saw a US release, it's a pretty nice thing to have, enjoy this addition to DASH lore and all the crossover goodness that comes with it!

It seems to have mistranslated Reavered as Rebird but a lot of other terminology seems fine.

The Rockman DASH story presented in NxC revolves around Rockman Juno's second coming. It seems to be non canon, simply because it's crossover and some inconsistencies between L1 and L2 plot elements. Despite this, it has a lot of info that helps us learn more about the DASH setting. Most notable being the explanation of Eden.

The following is a summary of what I can gather from the script:
He introduces himself without any memory of the DASH1 events. Roll wonders who it is. Tron and Rock however are immediately alarmed by his presence as he is the one Rock fought inside of the Main Gate. It seems that as a result of the DASH1 events, Juno's previous body was destroyed by Rock and his memory was almost completely erased by Data. His current self is a new Rockman Juno with only portions of his memory restored because the reconstructive process did not entirely succeed. (The reconstruction was carried over by crossover character Grand Master Meio who became interested in the technology used to create Juno. He also seems to be responsible for Juno's new body.)

Rock knows he has to destroy Juno before he regains his memory, as Juno would attempt to wipe out the Decoys again. Over time, Juno begins to realize he met and fought Rock before, Rock's strong emotional responses toward Juno also motivate him to regain his lost memory. As Juno's memory recovers, Roll too is informed about the mysteries of Rock's past. The name Rockman Trigger is brought up and Juno notes that it is significant, he also begins to speak to Rock as his superior "Lord Rockman Trigger." (Rockman Trigger-sama?)

Juno plans to reinitialize the Decoys of Earth using Eden and by the magic of crossover he's conducting an experiment to enhance Eden's area of effect beyond regional scope, able to terminate all Decoys on the planet. Juno however is constantly met with resistance and begins showing irregular behavior, his logic systems seem defected as he starts blaming others for own failure. Rock questions him about it not even aware of the meaning of the term, despite realizing this is what is happening to Juno.

Having turned completely irregular according to Rock, Juno completes his experiment and gives us previously unknown information about the nature of Eden. The final battle between Juno and Rock finally occurs, Juno regains his memories and realizes Rock's memory isn't complete either. Roll's interested in knowing what this "Trigger thing" is. And Juno explains Rock is Rockman Trigger Purging Officer First Class. Roll questions who Rock is and Rock has to reassure her he is himself, his name is Rock Volnutt. Rock defeats Juno and says his final farewell to him.

DASH / Timeline of Legends

Legends, prequel series:
200X/20XX AD
-MegaMan Classic
->
21XX AD / 22XX AD
-MegaMan X
->
X^X AD
-MegaMan ZERO
->
X^X AD
-MegaMan ZX
->

Legends, Ancient:
X^X AD
- Reign of the Elder's System and their machines.
->
X^X AD
The Elder's System is shut down by the Master's people and replaced with Master System. Elysium, the perfect world of eternal youth without hunger disease and war is created. (Thousands of years before Legends2, 3000 at the least.)
->
X^X AD
- The humans living on Elysium create Carbons that populate Terra. The Master provides them with a history and culture of their own. -> Sattelites like Eden are put into service to keep Carbon population in check and the Carbon Reinitialization Program is installed in the Library of Elysium. The library contains the genetic samples/records/code of the humans that built the Master System. This program clones new humans from those genetic samples, but is is meant to only be run after the Master and all other humans have died, by running this program all Carbons will be killed. -> The majority of Humans die out by unknown cause. The Master is the last human remaining and he lives an immortal and sterile life on Elysium.
-The Mother Units Yuna and Sera are created by the Master. They're androids with positronic brains built to
watch over and manage Elysium. They're assigned to Terra (Mother One, Yuna) and Elysium (Mother Zero or Mother Two, Sera), they hold authority over all units of the master system assigned to Terra and Elysium respectively. Intelligent latest design super-high gradeGattz and Geetz are eventually assigned to Yuna and Sera respectively to be their Servitor Units (manservants).
-Buraeucratic Model Third Class MegaMan Juno is assigned to the main gate of the island that is later known as Kattelox, his purpose is to monitor and to keep the carbon population in check using Eden.
-MegaMan Trigger is created by the Master, built for combat as a Purifier Unit First Class to seek out and destroy Aberrant Units. Units that malfunctioned and threatened the System. (Unlike all other units of the system, MegaMan Trigger does not appear to have a behavioral limiter installed or operational that makes him unable to think outside of system parameters.  Geetz wonders why the Master would want to have a unit such as that by his side. Sera makes note that this is because of the Master being lonely.)
->
X^X AD
- Master modifies some of the Carbons slightly. He makes mention of calling them "Betas" whilst Trigger calls them "Carbons." (This difference in terminology between the Master and others of the System does not exist in the original Japanese version. There they are always referred to with the singular term "Decoys.")
->
X^X AD
-After having lived on Elysium for 3000 years, Master comes to Terra with Trigger and dies. He tells Trigger how he felt about the Carbons and asks Trigger to destroy the System for the Carbon's sake and gives him a 'goodluck charm.' (A long long time before Legends2)
->
X^X AD
- Trigger fights against the system to fulfill the Master's dying wish. With the rest, Yuna fights against Trigger, but she slowly begins to understand what Trigger is trying to do. In the end she tries to take a neutral position. Frustrated with Yuna's decision, Sera travels to Terra herself to
fight Trigger.
-Trigger builts Data to protect his memories and the Master's Genetic Sample from Mother II (Sera.)
->
X^X AD
- Sera and Trigger battle on Terra, but Sera wasn't able to bring her full power to bear outside
of Elysium. Each expending all their energy, the two have fought to a standstill. Trigger's body was almost totally destroyed in the battle. There was no choice but to reset all of Trigger's parameters so that he could heal. His body is reset to his original configuration but this also flushes out all of Trigger's memories. All essential datafiles are thus transferred to Data. Yuna takes advantage of the opportunity and seals both Sera and Trigger away in stasis fields. Trigger with Data are then hidden on Nino Island and Sera with Geetz on Forbidden Island. Forbidden Island is sealed off and guarded by Yuna from then on.
->

Legends:
X^X AD
- Sera's sealing "Legend of the Goddesses" falls into mythology.
- Forbidden Island has its name attached to the legend of the Motherlode
->
X^X AD
-Barrel Caskett is born (65 years before Legends1)
-Von Bluecher is born
->
X^X AD
-Barrel and Bluecher enter Forbidden Island, lose consciousness, brought to Yosyonke by Yuna. (30 years/over 30 years before Legends2)
-Teisel Bonne born (29 years before Legends1)
->
X^X AD
-Tron Bonne born.
-Roll born -> Barrel finds Data and Trigger's reset form inside Nino Island Ruins. He names the baby Rock as a pun on his granddaughters name. Trigger adopted by Barrel. Alternate English Version Event: Barrel finds Data and Trigger's reset form inside Nino Island Ruins. Roll demands baby be named "MegaMan," after her favorite videogame character, despite Barrel's wishes. Trigger adopted by Barrel.
->
X^X AD
-Roll's parents enter forbidden island. -> Roll's father, Banner is saved (by Yuna?) and ends up at Yosyonke, Banner lost his memory and takes on the name Joe, his arm is replaced with a mechanical one. Roll's mother Matilda near death, is saved by Yuna, she repairs Matilda's body but is forced to use it as her own. (10 years before Legends2)
->
X^X AD
-Bon Bonne is born (3 years before Legends1)
->
X^X AD
Teisel, Tron and Bon's dear mother dies.

- The Elder's System is becoming active again after Elysium is no longer functioning. Remnants of that system are buried deep all over Terra in the ruins, so many Yuna does not even know how many. The Elders and their machines activate gradually; though eventually they will, they are not expected to be fully active soon.
->
X^X AD
- Rockman DASH 3: "Episode 1"
->
X^X AD
- Rockman DASH 3: "Episode 2: Revival! The Dark Lord of the Ruined Country."

Notable Events:
-The Legend of the Motherlode is first told, (Numerous generations before Legends2.)

-Tokarev guns were famous amongst the carbons. (Hundreds of years prior to Misadventures)

-MegaMan Juno once attempted to use Eden to reinitialize Kattelox Island and met resistance by a blue hero of the Carbons. Despite this hero's efforts Kattelox was still reinitialized. From that time onward, Juno slept inside of the main gate until awakened in Legends1 where he noticed that the Carbon population had become too large and subsequently attempted to reinitialize the island once again.

-Kattelox was discovered as an unpopulated island some 100 years before the writing of the book The history of Kattelox. At the time of its discovery, the surface of the island was almost completely covered with ruined buildings. Kattelox became well known after the discovery of high-quality refractors some 60 years before the writing of the aforementioned book.  After the discovery of the presence of refractors, it was also found that the island was riddled with underground ruins.  Due to the various unfortunate accidents which plagued early exploration attempts and the persistence of the rumors of a legendary curse or disaster, the majority of these ruins were sealed off from the general public.  Thus, digging is permitted in only a limited number of ruins.  As for the legendary disaster, it is believed by some that every century, an undefined presence that resides beneath the island awakens and destroys all life present on it.  Research conducted by the current mayor of the island, Professor Amelia, shows that there are remnants of several different civilizations on Kattelox.  In other words, it appears the previous inhabitants of this island have built a civilization many times, only to have it destroyed each time... This is believed to be the origin of the myth of the legendary disaster that haunts this island.  While there is obviously no scientific proof that Kattelox is destined for disaster, many people who believe in the legend choose to leave the island, and in fact the decreasing population has become one of the island's major concerns in recent years.

- The Famous Uncle Digg dies in a cave obsessed with his quest to uncover the thruth about "The Elixer of Youth." He becomes a Ghost unknown to everybody but his assistant Roxette. (An unknown but limited time before Misadventures.)

Notes:
-The historically inaccurate accounts of the Legend of the Goddesses, the Legend of the Motherlode and Forbidden Island, combined with the fact that Kattelox's history is known up to at least 100 years before Legends1, makes it most likely that Sera was sealed away more than a century before Legends2. The same for Trigger's reset. Therefor all events that reference more than a century before the first Legends game are to be considered as possibly overlapping the events of Legends, Ancient.

-The Rockman DASH story from Namco X Capcom occurs after Legends1, before Legends2 involving the revival of Rockman Juno referring to Trigger an Irregular. Its canon status is questioniable.
-In the case of Legends2/RockmanDASH2, Episode1 is the demo version of the full game which is Episode 2. Episode1 has it's own story which is not included in the full game. Presumably it is the same for DASH3.
-The title for DASH 3 has questionable canon status. It was given by Hideki in the same year as DASH2's release as a joke. Neither Episode 1 or Episode 2 of Rockman DASH 3 exist at current time.
-In the new cellphone game MegaMan and Roll are searching for treasure on five islands and the Bonnes get involved. Familiar faces like Denise are met along the way. Nearing the conclusion, the secret as to how Refractors are made is partially revealed. Under a volcanic island called Urakoi, Rock and Roll find ancient equipment that can transmogrify magma energy into refractors. However, either the machines are too complex to be properly understood, or the facility may have run dry, because they are only able to create low-grade refractors with it. They surmise that the ancients must have known powerful techniques of handling extreme amounts of energy and refining it to usable form, far surpassing what current technology is capable of.
