Title: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: Dr. Wily II on December 08, 2010, 05:07:57 PM
Udon Entertainment has been teasing fans for days about their upcoming work, and it has finally been revealed: Mega Man Tribute.

MMT is a fanbook that spans Classic, X, Zero, ZX and Legend series. And Udon promises that this will be the biggest Megaman project ever.
They are also looking for artist submissions, that will be included in the book.

The book will premiere at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con, a 300 page limited edition hard-cover book.

Official site for Mega Man Tribute (http://www.megamantribute.com/) <--- You can find details for art submissions inside.

Special thanks to Irgendein for letting me know of this.

I'm torn on this. On the one hand, my artwork could make it into the book. On the other hand, it probably won't, and if it does, it'll no longer be mine.

Damn...

This is great. And there's enough time to make it. I'll surely submit something :)

So... this is a book about Mega Man-themed fan art of existing characters? Do want.

This is neat! Maybe (or maybe not) I would enter this just for fun!

cool. Though wow at the guidelines. NOTHING outside of the games at all, including designs used in the mangas and such. So no Ariga styled characters.

Now, Im assuming it WILL be made available outside of San Diego Comicon right? >.>;

would suck if it was made some sort of exclusive tribute book only available there.

They really messed up drawing Grey and Ashe.

Now I can't unsee it.

Vent and Aile turned out fine, though. Bad angle for Grey and Ashe, methinks.

They really messed up drawing Grey and Ashe.

I noticed that too. Huh.

But I may or may not be intrested in this, mainly because I may be more intrested in wrapping up my official complete works collection.

A book full of fanart...no thanks

Im certain it wont be ALL fanart. Plus Udon knows their stuff. You wont find a Girla type scribble for example. And some of Udon's artists are Megaman Fans themselves, so im certain there will be Udon art there too.

Man, that's awesome, but it just sucks that I'm unable to get my hands on or find any of the UDON Tribute Books, not even the comics out in stores.

I have a hard time telling if this book is a good, or bad idea.

Also, a question, will the artists who contribute to this get paid or something? Or maybe they'll get a free copy of the book at least?
Or will they get a different present?
Not planning to contribute (since I can't draw) but... there must be something people contributing will get from this? After all, Udon will be making money from the art they drew, sooo...

They get the satisfaction of having their art in a Mega Man tribute book.

All submissions become capcom property.

There's some motivation to get me drawing again.  Too bad I still can't shade for crap, but at least I can do competent flat-colors...  *sighs*

Im certain it wont be ALL fanart. Plus Udon knows their stuff. You wont find a Girla type scribble for example. And some of Udon's artists are Megaman Fans themselves, so im certain there will be Udon art there too.
Udon often strikes me as having a strong tie with the MegaMan fanbase.  Correction of "Rock" in the Powered Up! page of MMOCW being a major point, as well as their use of traditional X5 Maverick names.  They also maintained the use of "Force Armor", although that one's technically incorrect (the fans keep it popular because it sounds cooler).

And actually, I can see that in the way that they arranged the cover-art.  First of all, you'll notice it's all the "platforming" MegaMen and not the "chip collecting" ones ("legal reasons", eh?).  Second, the "triangle of focus" in the image is clearly Rock, X, and Trigger, the original "big three" series of the franchise, with Zero/ZX characters given lesser emphasis.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: Flame on December 10, 2010, 03:36:38 AM
Actually, seems more like

Main focus: X, Rock, Trigger
Secondary Focus: Zero
last focus: ZX cast

After all, Zero has a fanbase almost as big as PB's sexcelent ego. (ALMOST as big)

I say so mainly because while he is in the background and as such is smaller, he is given a near full body shot.

I'm in a bad place with this. The lack of EXE sends off certain bells in my mind.

Oh well... I guess we'll either see something that sucks or something that is remotely interesting.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: KoiDrake on January 24, 2011, 11:44:22 PM
Seems like you don't appreciate fanart for some reason?

And the EXE and Starforce series were left out because they don't completely belong to Capcom.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: Aresian on January 25, 2011, 12:34:44 AM
I appreciate fanart, I just feel very eh I guess. Lately I've felt that way about a lot of stuff.

I miss EXE, that's my main thing. And it goes unnoticed these days due to a lot of stuff. Oh well, dun mind me.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: KoiDrake on January 25, 2011, 02:26:17 AM
I was sad that EXE and Starforce didn't got in too, the best thing those series had where the designs of the characters in my opinion, but what can we do...

I'd probably feel the same way than you too if it weren't for the fact that I've seen some stuff from previous books (Street Fighter and Darkstalker), which where mindblowing for me. I guess I'm expecting the same quality of works on this book (and maybe my drawing somewhere inbetween  8D)

I was more disappointed that no extra-game characters or designs were allowed, myself; no Zodiac 'Bots or badass Ruby-Spears MM. :(
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: Hypershell on January 29, 2011, 02:27:53 AM
The Ruby-Spears MegaMan exclusion had me raising a few eyebrows.  Isn't that really just an art style?  Granted, Roll's a pretty loose interpretation, but still.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: The Great Gonzo on January 29, 2011, 03:22:46 AM
I guess if you wanted to get technical, RS-MM being a separate continuity from the games would make that more than a mere shift in art style...but I don't speak legalese, so what do I know. (Also, I am tired and this post likely makes little sense)

The same could be said for Ariga-Mega, and it's excluded too.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: Hypershell on January 29, 2011, 03:30:56 AM
Actually, no, Ariga-Mega was NOT excluded.  Which is what makes it all the more weird that RS was.

From MMN:

Quote
In this specific case, Ariga is a good friend of UDON. If people want to draw Ariga’s version of characters, I’m sure he would be thrilled. Though really, Ariga’s characters are the classic versions just drawn in his own style.

Maybe they're concerned that RS would fall within the same "other distributors" loophole that nailed BN/SF?  *shrugs*

Post by: The Great Gonzo on January 29, 2011, 03:35:06 AM
...Forgot that. derp.

Other manga versions aren't allowed, so at least there's no (other?) double standarding going on. I hope.

Its cult classic. So bad it's good.

Like the SF movie.

Really?  Lucky break for me.  I did two drawings, had to scrap the first because it was landscape and not portrait.  Then I found out all-too-late last night that my computer refuses to tolerate images of too high a resolution, thwarting my amateur colorizing attempts. o-O

This'll give me time to take another crack at it.
Title: Re: Udon Entertainment presents... Mega Man Tribute
Post by: Krystal on February 02, 2011, 09:11:26 AM
I should probably use the extension to polish up my entry a little more but I have totally lost all motivation to continue working on my picture.

Anyway, I'd be like: Oh mememememe I'm an RPM artist who's submitting! But technically I wasn't.

I personally find it kinda strange they let Ariga designs through, since some of the things he draws is pretty much exclusively his.
They're probably like: Oh Ariga's such a nice guy he won't be pissed off if we let people use his designs :3c
I hope to see some Ariga styled stuffs in there anyway *w*

It is also my personal opinion that since my entry looks better than their cover art, they should let me in. (But it's also my personal opinion that my entry looks better than their cover.)

People who publish fan-submissions tend to give all ends of the talent spectrum a shot, merely emphasizing the better ones, not posting them exclusively.

As far as I'm concerned this is as random as a lottery ticket.  The "judges" are probably just there to make sure the drawing follows the rules.
(to that end, I hope they're familiar enough with MM10 to know a Roboenza cure when they see one, or mine's going to look really wrong)

This just in: UDON warns of yet another delay. Is the Mayan Calendar to blame?  :O More at 10 O'Clock.

I'm mean.

To be fair, over at dA, I did read an UDON member mention that on top of having to sort through and discuss the merit of those 2000+ entries, the ones they chose do have to be approved by both Capcom US and Capcom Japan. Sooo, if as usual they are seeing overseas delays in getting response in time, I have a feeling they don't have everything ready to announce or email people yet. Back for the Darkstalkers Tribute book, they posted a journal at dA with the names of every winner, so I am just going to assume they will use the same courtesy for this one. Until I see at least one person journal something about winning, or see an official post from UDON, I'm not going to hold my breath thinking they've got everything selected. Too many people jumped the gun and assumed an UDON deadline would stand firm; again no offense to them, but we all saw it coming. Especially if there were additional Copryright/publishing hurdles.

@Blackhook: I've hardly seen any ZX, in terms of early leaks. And I'm kinda surprised there's been more Zero than X. I think Classic will take it, followed by Zero, X, Legends and finally ZX. With a handful of multi-series crossovers thrown in, like I attempted.

Post by: Hypershell on March 02, 2011, 12:43:14 AM
Yeah, considering Udon's track record with MegaMan deadlines, I'd hold off on abondoning hope until they've actually announced something.

Not as if the Devroom events aren't doing enough damage to my ego.

No surprise that I didn't make it - I'm a total n00b when it comes to coloring.  It was a fun rush anyway, though.  And congrats, Koi!  Can't wait to see your stuff!

I love the hardcover art, but I think I'll stick to the paperback, seeings how between shipping charges and Amazon discounts the difference between the two is near $70.  -_-
