Emulation / Hiryu's ROM Hack Reviews
« on: May 20, 2010, 11:06:35 PM »
I'd thought this would be something interesting to do. I will be focusing mainly on Megaman Hacks, but if anyone wants to make a request on other series, feel free to make a reply, or send me a PM.

---

With over 70 Mega/Rockman Hacks, how are you going to know which ones to play and which ones you wish would crawl back into programming purgatory?

Title: Robertman 2

Rom Hack of: Megaman 2

Creativity: With stages to choose from, such as Stupid Tower, Banana Land, and McDonald's, you can't go wrong here! The author also renamed the bosses, so it's no longer Metalman or Airman. You're fighting against Cruncho,Chef Eato, and Uposo.

Gameplay: Your buster now shoots all 3 shots at the same time. It may sound like a rapid fire, but it isn't. It would be like throwing 3 boomerangs at the same time. I think the author may have done this to make it look like Robertman was throwing a stream of snot at the enemy. Nothing else has changed.

Music: The only thing changed is the order or the music. For instance, Instead of hearing Quickman's music in Quickman's level, you hear Woodman's.

Difficulty: About the same as the original. Nothing new here.

Graphics: Some are good, some are bad. If you run while shooting, some small, weird graphic mutation will occur with Robertman. Overall, the author/spriter did a sloppy job.

Metalman, Airman, and Bubbleman look terrible, thank goodness those were the only ones with custom-sprites. The rest have not been altered, or with only minor alterations.

Here's Airman's Sprite. Try not to hurl, now.

Oh god, someone give me a - *HUUURRLL*

The energy bar has changed to those small weapon drops, which may confuse people at first, because it implies that you need to pick up weapons drops to refill your energy. However, this is not true.

Stage Layout/Design: The author did make some minor changes to the levels, like with Metalman's, it's a "Black and White" palette, with some green and blue for the conveyor belts. He did change some of the platforms, but you still go in the same direction as the original.

The most layout change he did was the boss room. You can now fall to your doom, it's no longer just a straight line, and there are a few platforms here and there, suspended in mid-air.

Story: Replace Megaman with Robertman, Dr. Light with Dr. Bugar, and Dr. Wily with Dr. Dragonite. I can barely see the similarities here.

Boss AI: N/A

Overall: 6.5/10

Replayable?: It's not terrible, but there are more quality hacks out there that are higher on the replayability list.

TL;DR: Some graphics suck, it's an "okay" game.

I'd rather be: Playing Boogerman.

Me and a friend took a trip down to New Orleans on Thursday to see an orchestra play some of the most famous video game music. I must say, I was highly impressed by the work they put into the concert. PBS was filming this for television, so they tried their best to make sure it was a great concert. Music included selections from: Halo, Advent Rising, The Legend of Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Castlevania, Civilization, World of Warcraft, Megaman, Final Fantasy, some classic Atari games, and many others.

For the Megaman portion, they played of course, the most famous songs: The title from Megaman 2 and 3, and Dr. Wily Stage 1 in Megaman 2.

Two contests were held: a costume contest, and a Guitar Hero: Aerosmith contest. What you had to do with the Guitar Hero contest is play Sweet Emotion on expert and get the highest score out of all other contestants. The winner, which was a 12 year old with really long hair, played Sweet Emotion on stage with the rest of the Orchestra. The kid got a signed poster from THE Ralph Baer,a $500 gift card to Gamestop, and some other goodies.

There were a group of people that participated in the costume contest. Some people I can remember that participated were: A duo that had a SNES costume, one was the system, the other a controller, a man and a woman that were "custom characters"(Explain to me why people dress up like this and expect to win), Seto Kaiba, Squall Lionheart, Kairi from Kingdom hearts, a (presumably) brother and sister dressed up as Mario and Peach, two people from Kingdom Hearts 385/2 days, and a 4 year old dressed up in a DK suit.

Wanna guess who won? The kid in the DK suit, by sheer  "D'awww..."

Has anyone seen/heard Martin Leung? He was there as a solo pianist. For those of you who do not know, he was shown on Ebaums World for playing the Super Mario Bros. tune blindfolded. He is an incredible pianist.

I think one of the things I will remember about this was they brought the father of video games, Ralph Baer, out to the stage. I didn't know if he was still living or not, but he is still alive and kicking at 88 years old. The deal with this segment was that they selected someone from the audience, which happened to be an 8 year old,to play with Mr. Baer on his "Brown Box," that is, a prototype of the Magnavox Odyssey. The player also got a signed poster from Ralph Baer.

After all that excitement, there was a meet and greet with all the composers, producers, and soloists. I managed to get everyone's signature, except for Gerard Marino, who was unfortunately away from his chair by the time I got to him. I would've liked to get Ralph Baer's signature, but he wasn't there.

Original / Megaman 9 vs Megaman 10's music
« on: March 10, 2010, 06:50:12 AM »
*looks around for duplicate threads*

Anyway, just wanted to see what people thought about 10's music. Afterall, something has to make up for the story.  :P

I myself, find 9's to be more memorable than some of 10's. I like all the pieces in 9, I can remember most, if not all, while in 10, some are okay. Maybe it's just because 10 has come out recently. There are some I'm starting to remember and favor now than say, a few days after it came out.

While 9's Wily Machine was good, I think 10's Wily Machine is the best Final Boss music in any of the current games out right now. It's quite epic. Please someone try to disprove my opinion on this. :)

I've heard that they composed 9's music with the thought of 2's in mind, and I can see where that worked well, if that's true. I can remember 9's tunes like 2's, and I think they tried to compose Flash in the Dark similar to the 1st Wily Stage in 2, because both are quite upbeat. Also, 3-5's Wily Stages in 2 sounds similar to 9's Strange World(Wily Stage 3), because both sound mysterious, and quite odd.

I think both have good qualities. But right now, 9 would beat 10, IMO.

Gaming / Chrono Trigger/Cross Topic

Talk about one of the best RPG's here!

I've played through Trigger a couple of times, but I'm just starting to play through Cross. Currently trying to infiltrate Viper Manor now.

What did you think of the coliseum in the DS version? What about any other new features?

Also, has anyone heard of Crimson Echoes or Prophet's Guile?

Fan Creations / Kaze yo Tsuate Mashup (AKA Roll's theme from MvC1)
« on: January 22, 2010, 10:46:35 PM »
Using a video someone posted in the Boob tube thread, I've managed to create a mashup of Kaze yo Tsuate featuring the 8-bit remix and the Original version.

Any suggestions on improvement would be helpful.

Gaming / Any good Turbografx-16/PC Engine games?
« on: January 22, 2010, 04:46:56 AM »
I already know about Bonk. I'm kinda interested in the Ys Book 1 and 2, I've only played Ys III on the SNES. I'm assuming it's similar to the one I've played?

Describe what makes these games good and why I should play them instead of just slapping a list in the topic, please. Thanks.

Also, if you happen to post any PC Engine games, it would be thoughtful to let me know if there's any english translation patches available.

My answers (Does not contain any actual spoilers):
[spoiler]

Best: Graduating from High School and getting like a total of $1000 in graduation money plus some other stuff... and then spending like it all of it two months later. XD[

Worst: Trying to get my driver's license.. the fourth time.

Weirdest: I dunno,  I think the weirdest thing was having to take American History in High School out of order.

Funniest: This one time in the band room...  >0<

Epic Fail: Failing my driver's test 3 or 4 times, over picky nitshit. That or tripping over the xylophone on the sideline while marching backwards. Atleast it was on the practice field.  :-[

Epic Win:To be literal, winning a Halo match with 50 kills against 8 people.

Nostalgia: Watching Toonami when I got home from school. This sorta laps from the 90's too.

Taste in music: Hardly any.

Forums: 4 or 5.

Most change: Physical Appearance. (Hoorah for puberty! It made me 6'5"![195 cm for the rest of the world]) I also used to have freckles when I was younger.

Megaman: I think BN6 was the best one this decade.

Capcom: Strider 2. I so want something more than a linear action-adventure game though. But the way things are at Capcom, I doubt it's going to happen anytime soon. Strider is small-time unfortunately, compared to Resident Evil, Megaman, and Street Fighter. It's still a good game to play though.

But besides Strider, Marvel vs Capcom 2.(PLEASE MAKE A THIRD ONE!!)

Anime: Fate/Stay Night.

Manga: Naruto.
