Live Game Development
Every Wednesday @ 8 PM (EST)
Part of the Back-2-Back WIP Wednesday stream! Tune in earlier at 6 PM EST for LD's animation and art show. He is the lead artist for Skylance Studio.

Weekend Gaming Hangout
Every Saturday Evening (EST)

If there is anything you want to see, feel free to suggest it. I will not play every game suggested however. I will play games I like or are interested in. I am also sometimes interested in altered playthroughs, such as when I played Symphony of the Night I limited myself to not equipping any defensive equipment, and using the Luck code.

Also, if I happen to be playing an online game you are more than welcome to also jump in with me.

Can't watch if it's on Halloween, I'll be too busy playing Super Castlevania.

How do you post here? Twitch has an Android app if you use that. iOS likely has it too.

We could do a "(The Day After) Halloween Special (Cause Everyone's Busy)" maybe if too many people can't make it.

That and Wii Opera Browser when Xbox Internet Explorer like acts like [parasitic bomb]. I've tried using the Twitch app on my 360 so I could try to watch Vixy's live but it was crap (it was annoying to use from what I remembered and it had no search function unlike other video apps, making it impossible to find Vixy at all). I might try the app again if they fixed it.

If we pushed it to the day after Halloween would everyone be able to make it more easily?

Screw it. Let's make this less complicated and make it a DOUBLE NIGHT STREAM.

October 31st AND November 1st

There's a lot of Castlevania's to pick from so there's no shortage of material, that's for sure.

(Edit: [parasitic bomb], we don't have the merge posts button anymore? Sorry >_<)

To note: Fan games that are not rom hacks I will accept as suggestions for what to play, but the legality of some emulation is too iffy and I'd rather avoid it if possible.

That said I own the UMD's and dumped all my PSP isos personally, so that is fair game for me to use a PSP emulator with them to get a high resolution, provided the emulator works for the game. It currently doesn't seem to support DXC correctly though (really bad graphic glitches). However I can hook my PSP-Slim to the tv if all else fails, and video capture that.

The way I have my entertainment system setup makes it extremely easy to capture video from a wide range of inputs, and this weekend I'm going to be verifying which consoles I can indeed capture from. Then I can get a better idea of which games I can play on stream. And yes, that means I will be using original hardware where possible, so no save state or cheating bullshit or any of that.

EDIT:

Updated first post to include times.

October 31st : 7PM EST (11PM GMT)
November 1st : Subject to how I feel the next day.

Thinking about playing Kid Dracula which I've actually never played before.

Also going to play Serio's Castlevania Fighter game. There's an update coming for Halloween with new characters and bosses.

Castlevania ReBirth was really good, and I think it's time for another run through that.

I've been thinking about Harmony of Dissonance too.

I still haven't finished the extraordinarily good Lecarde Chronicles CV fangame. It's hard as hell but a really really good game.

I could do a no-armor luck code run of Symphony too maybe.

Any suggestions / requests?

Naked or not naked, an Aria of Sorrow run would be wonderful.

I'm also not opposed to a Symphony run.

Is a naked run of Aria of Sorrow possible?

Perhaps. I probably can only get away with one big exploration title like that though. They soak up a lot more time than the other styles of Castlevania (give or take on how much you die lol).

If you had to pick just one 'metroidvania' which would it be?
Title: Re: Halloween 2-Day Special Castlevania Live Stream

OK, so a little update. Everything seems on task for tomorrow. I may not be able to use as much original hardware as I would like. While I can hook them up easily enough to my system, the capture card I'm using doesn't seem to take Component input that isn't of a certain format (720i/p and up). If I can get this working I will, but I may have to use Virtual Console titles to fill the gaps.

If you have a DS emulator available, I wouldn't mind seeing one of those CVs. I guess I'd prefer Dawn of Sorrow.

SotN is always a good choice as well. Naked Luck Mode sounds fun.

If I could pick one Metroidvania, it'd be Aria of Sorrow. I really do like Symphony of the Night, but Aria of Sorrow to be had a much more interesting story for a Castlevania game to me and the ability use powers from the monsters was pretty cool.

Since I'm terrible that could be just a few >_> I guess it all depend son how well I'm performing. As long as I'm not falling asleep I'll be running through em. Or die trying... a lot.

I'm getting a lot of positive remarks about naked luck code SotN, so I think that's what I'll do for my mandatory metroidvania on the 31st. It's not stupidly long so I can most likely clear it within a few hours or so.

I really want to try Kid Dracula for lulz, and do a Castlevania Chronicles run for kicking my teeth in.

I'll probably start with Kid Dracula cause it's got baby Alucard fighting a KKK Nazi for reasons. Can't beat that.

Expect Super Castlevania IV for sure. Probably on Nov1st.

Hey I was wondering, have you tried the Shark enhancement patch for ePSXe? It's supposed fix some of the problems it has though the one I've noticed was that it fixed ePSXe's inability to play multi-track image files from cue sheets and whatnot. That kinda sucks SOTN or your emulator isn't working to well.
Title: Re: Halloween 2-Day Special Castlevania Live Stream
Post by: OBJECTION MAN on November 01, 2014, 06:10:32 PM
Yeah, I wasn't able to check the forums and stuff due to some on air changes I needed to make. WOuld have fucke dup the game stream every time I'd try to check.

As for the patch, I wasn't aware of it, or any game that needed it. I was using pSX first. SotN didn't work on ePSXe because it wasn't grabbing the game video right. I did fix that eventually but then the memory card file was NOT transferable from pSX to ePSXe. There's also a possibility my SotN disk is damaged too.

There's a program called Memcard Rex for PS1 emulators that lets you manage the data of memory card files and export/import data to and from memocard card files, though I'm not sure if works with files supported by pSX but it's worth a shot.

-EDIT-
Yeah does support the pSX emulator.

Was going to switch to the Xbox360 version, since I can stream off of HDMI, but when it was returned to me it wont turn on. Yay.

I did try that memory card thing though. It worked! SO yeah, SotN is still on, using ePSXe.

UPDATE: ReBirth is out unfortunately. It refuses to acknowledge the Wii's signal for streaming, even though PS2 works on the same component connection.

Was your 360 the bulkier Elite models? Those are way more likely to fail on you than the slim S and E models. The one thing don't like about XBLA Symphony of the Night (it's a minor gripe), or at least the English version, is that they removed the FMVs but in the Japanese version they're still there.

Also I'm glad that MemcardRex worked for you.

Taking a 30-45min break. I'll be back then.

It's the black case version, the second edition of 360's I think? It's served me very very well for a long time. The person I lent it to dropped it. So yeah, you can tell the cause of death.

Thanks to everyone who popped in and hanged out. I really enjoyed the whole thing, and I plan to stream more sometime very soon. CV Fighter was hype, so I want to play more of that on stream too.

Some of the games that I'll likely be streaming sometime soon:

Super Castlevania IV
Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
Legend of Korra (Hard Mode Playthrough)
Ultra Street Fighter IV (PC)
Street Fighter III Third Strike (PS3)

Also going to continue to try getting my capture card working for older systems. I got my NES, SNES, N64, etc all hooked up for this [parasitic bomb], but they just don't work with it. NES feed patched into HDMI is really weird, lol.
Title: Re: Halloween 2-Day Special Castlevania Live Stream
Post by: Satoryu on November 02, 2014, 11:59:25 PM
Yeah, older stuff into HDMI would need a converter or something, I would think. Commonly, people capture composite video with a Dazzle.
Title: Re: Halloween 2-Day Special Castlevania Live Stream
Post by: OBJECTION MAN on November 03, 2014, 12:24:05 AM
Oh, no, I can get the video on my TV. I got a receiver that can take older inputs and pass them through HDMI and Component. The capture card though does not seem to be able to detect this upscaled signal, while the TV can. I'll have to look into that one you mentioned and others.

Also I'm trying to get these on youtube, but it seems that Twitch has nulled all the audio for no reason. So it's worthless at the moment. I'll have to find a way to manually record these on the side as it streams so I can upload without being at the mercy of Twitch's content ID match system which seems to be broken.

Man I stayed up until 3:30 in the morning watching Castlevania Fighter until I became tired, it impressed me that much and that was my first time witnessing it in action. Serio has put a lot effort into and it really shows (unlike BrothaKyo's "work"). I gotta get my hands on it when I get chance.

There's quite a few options out there when it comes to streaming and recording at the same time. Programs like Xsplit and OBS do both, and there are some recording programs like Amarec that put out a signal you can stream. And of course you could screen capture your recording program if all else fails. That's how I recorded some streamed speedruns back in the day. Xsplit and Dazzle don't mix too well.

Did a test for capturing retro consoles. Worked out fairly well. Sadly I think my NES is dying though. It goes super glitch and crash after a few minutes of play. I have a top loader but it does NOT have the AV cables, so I need to find a way to convert that perhaps.

The video should be recorded on Twitch. I played Mario 64, Smash bros 64, Bomberman 64 1 and 2, and a few other things I think.

There is an input delay on the N64 with my TV so if it seems I'm running off cliffs for no reason thats why.

If you're reading this while the stream is going on, the reason for the inconsistant damage you're taking from Beelzebub is because Poison lowers all of your stats.

Here's some suggestions if you're still into PS1 emulation.

- Silhouette Mirage -- it's a side-scroller from Treasure. Think Gunstar Heroes meets Ikaruga (even though Ikaruga came after this game), where you use various weapons (parasites in this case) and the game has dual-polarity element sorta like Ikaruga, but in Silhouette you can only damage enemies opposite of your element but you do have a shield that can deflect same-elemental attacks back at them. Originally it was on the Saturn but it got re-released on the PS1 and localized by Working Design (with some gameplay changes to make it harder than the Japanese version).
- Strider 1 and/or 2 -- both of them are on PS1, I doubt I need to explain this one.

Also this for PC games:
- Streets of Rage Remake -- a great fan-remake of the Streets of Rage series. It combines all the games into one, adds new gameplay elements, branching paths, multiple endings, customizable game settings, and nice set of remixed music from the series. Sega unfortunately gave the devs of this remake a cease-and-desist but the final version of this game is still floating around. I can PM you the link for it if you want.
- Kamui-- a personal favorite of mine and a great shoot 'em up. Imagine RayStorm done by Treasure. You control a fighter that can use a spread shoot, homing lightning, and a powerful lightning beam that cancels bullets. It's an old doujin PC shoot 'em up, but it's still fun after all these years. It's available on Desura and I think on Steam by now.
- Tyrian / Tyrian 2000 -- another oldie that loads of fun to play, and it's freeware to boot. You can customize your ship in the Story Mode (most of story stuff are in the Data Cubes you can collect, ) or the Arcade Mode with random power-ups. The game is kinda episodic, like some early FPSes, and there's about 3 episodes to play (more in the later versions). It's an old DOS game, but DOSBox can help and GOG.com has the game pre-packed with DOSbox and everything you need to run it easily on modern systems. It supports mouse controls and they're great.
- ETHER VAPOR Remaster -- an updated version of the 2007 doujin shooter ETHER VAPOR by Edelweiss. It's a shoot 'em up with changing perspectives and you are armed with three different weapons, each with their on basic and charged effects, that can help in certain situations. Has been localized by Nyu Media and it's up on Steam and Desura.
- Astebreed -- an even bigger and prettier ETHER VAPOR successor although it's easier to survive in this game than ETHER VAPOR (unless you're playing on Hard mode) but scoring is much trickier. It's on Steam and Playism.
- Fairy Bloom Freesia -- I guess you can call this part beat 'em up part tower defense since you play a fairy that can kick all kinds of ass to protect a forest from monsters and evil-doers that wishes to do harm to it. There's RPG elements in it as well that lets you level-up the fairy and give her new moves to learn. Also on Steam and Desura.

That's so far what I got on the top of my head.

-EDIT-
In case you were wondering about that poster and magazine that security guard from Metal Gear Rising has: those were done by the artist of Senran Kagura.

Twitch only saves them for 16 days now apparently, which is why I switched to recording them locally. Sadly anything I didn't record is long gone thanks to Twitch. I plan to upload the recordings to Youtube at some point. I made an account but I haven't done it yet.

Zan is all PC master race so it's limited. If he had a PS3, which I've been telling him to get for ever now, we'd have a [parasitic bomb] TON of fighting games to play (BB:CP, Persona A, SF3 Third Strike, Marvel3, SFxT, UnderNightInBirth, etc).

We have on PC:
Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code
Ultra Street Fighter IV
King of Fighters XIII

I'm going to try and prioritize this for updates and suggestions on future streams. It will be the best way to keep track of that, and anything else I happen to be doing.

I will also keep this thing open so that I can read Twitter comments during the stream itself. It may be a good way to comment during the stream if you don't have access to the Twitch chat.

AND!!

We're going to be doing a run of Jorge D Fuentes' Castlevania Adventure Map for Minecraft along with the survival!

I planned to a couple of times, but between day job and programming the game I haven't found the time. It's about time for a return though.

Is there any particular game you'd like to see played? The Castlevania hype is real right now. I wouldn't mind hitting that again.

I was also considering live streaming game development itself. Like programming while taking questions or something.

I think that's a reasonable request. It's one of the greats. I suppose that applies to a lot of Castlevania games...

I should be OK to stream this coming weekend. I'll have to check ahead a little to verify though.

Now to figure out if I want to play it with the Gamecube controller or shell out 8$ for the WiiU version.

Note: I do NOT have the equipment necessary to video capture from a DS. So DoS, PoR, and OoE are off the table sadly. I would have done OoE if I could have.

SotN, Chronicles, Kid Dracula

What to play? Maybe a Metal Slug 3 run. Maybe some King of Fighters XIII. Maybe more? (Maybe a crowd suggestion?)

And real life strikes again. It will not be possible this week, sorry :(

CLASSIC GAMING NIGHT

MARIO MAKER

AND AN INDIE SPOTLIGHT FOR METALOID: ORIGIN

Saturday September 26th @ ~3PM EST

Classic consoles that I may play from include but are not limited to:
ColecoVision
Atari
NES
SNES
GB / GBC
GBA
N64
PSX

Will take requests but you're more likely to get it filled if you tell me earlier than later. I may not have all the games ever but I may know someone who has what you're requesting, or I can find it before the day of the broadcast!

What consoles do you want to see?! Let me know!!

Post by: OBJECTION MAN on September 25, 2015, 11:30:43 PM
I don't have some that I thought I did but that isn't as unusual as it may sound since I know I've had a few sticky fingered "friends" over the years that have shrunk my collection.

Anyway here are some games I have that I feel would be something I would like to play this time. Keep in mind I will only be able to play from so many consoles and so many games depending on how long it takes me to finish them. Also need time for the Indie Spotlight and Mario Maker.

ATARI & COLECOVISION
(So many titles and so short that I will play a bunch of randoms probably. I don't even remember what half of these games are.)
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Space Invaders
Frogger
Pac-Man

NES
Mega Man 4
Super Mario Bros. 2
Bee 52

SNES
Kirby Super-Star
Super Mario Bros. 3 (All-Stars)
Super Mario World
(Wow someone stole all my Donkey Kong Country games... Lame.)

GAMEBOY / SUPER / COLOR
(I have a lot of GB games in total.)
Donkey Kong '95 (S)
Kirby's Dreamland 2 (S)
Megaman Xtreme 2 (C)
Donkey Kong Land (S)
Super Mario Land 2

GAMEBOY ADVANCE
(I have a HUGE amount of GBA games in total. Just name it and I probably have it or can get / borrow it.)
Megaman Z 1, 2, 4 (Did 3 already.)
Boktai (I'll need a black light for this... Not sure if I can this week.)
Boktai 2 (I'll need a black light for this... Not sure if I can this week.)
Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland
King of Fighters EX 2 (Can use fight stick with converters, lol.)

NINTENDO 64
Super Mario 64
Bomberman 64
Starfox 64
Super Smash Bros.

PLAYSTATION
(I have a HUGE amount of PSX games in total. Just name it and I probably have it or can get / borrow it.)
Megaman X5, X6 (Did X4 already.)
Gundam Battle Assault
Street Fighter Alpha 3

It is worth noting that I do have some games from those eras but only as their ports to newer consoles. I'm not too keen on doing that this time as I want to have this be an original hardware stream this week. But in the future I can do those.

Gameboy Advance:

Astro Boy Omega Factor or Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure would be awesome.

Pac-Man Arrangement is fantastic, too (part of the Pac-Man Collection).

Aria of Sorrow is another suggestion, even though I think you streamed that before.

Also, do you have Iridion II?

Gameboy:

Power Quest would be an obvious suggestion.

I don't remember if Objection Man streamed Aria or not; I remember it was supposed to be for the Bloodstained or last year's Halloween special but it didn't happened or something. I'll vote on StarFox 64 (not very long so it won't take up time for Super Mario Maker and Metaloid), Space Invaders, and Frogger (ditto), plus...

Gameboy Advance:

Astro Boy Omega Factor or Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure would be awesome.

Pac-Man Arrangement is fantastic, too (part of the Pac-Man Collection).

Gameboy:

Power Quest would be an obvious suggestion.
These, too, if possible.

Medievil - I have never played it. I'll see what I can do to get it!

Gundam Battle Assault - It is basically Gundam Street Fighter, and it is actually pretty damn good. If I play it I will be playing #2. ("3" and the GBA game were not really the same game series. It was just the same title for the sake of sales.)

Astro Boy Omega Factor - Great game! Kinda long for actual completion, but I'll see if I can find it.

Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure - Looked this up and it looks amazing! I will try to get this one for sure.

Pac-Man Arrangement (part of the Pac-Man Collection) - Never heard of it before. looks interesting, though I'll be playing it on Atari this week. I'll see about another time though!

Aria of Sorrow - I was going to do this one time but I ran out of time the first time, and equipment failure the next. it is a long game so I want to do this on it's own some other time.

Iridion II - Looks cool! I'll actually hold off on this one as I have a request from a friend for a SHMUP night, but only when he will be back to see it.

Power Quest - Wow, I have never heard of this. It looks crazy though. I don't know anyone who has this, but it looks cheap online. It won't arrive in time, but I can try to get this for a Fighter night I plan to do sometime soon.

I actually don't really play SHMUPs much, so I don't know how they are. I may have enough trouble on my hands with the ones listed above. Remember the title of the stream ;)

At face value, Touhou kinda puts me off by the whole all animu girls sillyness, but aren't they known for being notoriously hard too?

Crimzon MOTHERFUCKIN' Clover. That is that law around these parts, just how you can't go around not mentioning Shovel Knight here (according to Phi).

At face value, Touhou kinda puts me off by the whole all animu girls sillyness, but aren't they known for being notoriously hard too?
[youtube]youtu.be/qgePgMmYUdQ[/youtube]
Does this answer your question? And this isn't even the true final boss, either. Even if you're not put off by the copious amounts of anime girls in this nearly two decade long-running series, I don't think you're up for this. I can't even get past my waifu the Stage 4 boss of the sixth game on Normal because by the time I get to her, I'm already [tornado fang]'d. A lot of the music in the series are awesome though (for added fun, watch this (https://youtu.be/dQ9QH_8_tWw)), and the official fighting games aren't too bad. Actually getting some of these games legit might be a challenge in their own right.

The only shoot 'em up I can think of that supports co-op is Beat Hazard, and if you squint at them, the Metal Slug games on Steam (damn I want 3 bad, and it's a shame the DRM-free was only sold through a specific bundle that's already over). Of the shooters that I've played that does support online co-op are on Xbox 360 (e.g. Deathsmiles, Otomedius [Not So] Excellent), with some being downloadable(e.g. Radiant Silvergun, Trouble Witches NEO!, Strania -The Stella Machina-), few of them being imports (e.g. Mushihime-sama Futari Ver.1.5, Muchi-Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets!, ESCHATOS) with more than half of them being not import-friendly (e.g. Caladrius, Mamomoro-Kun, Deathsmiles II X).

I don't really recommend Sexy Parodius since it's slightly different from the other Parodius games.  Also I've never seen the other Gradius games either so I have no idea what those are like.  There's also R-Type series but it also has the Ghost and Goblins situation in that you have to play it twice to get the real end. It's also crazy dark for a shump if you look up the background to it........

Wow that dude is ultra weak-sauce. Using save states. Disgraceful.

In any event, I don't have any Gradius (or spin off) games on hand. I actually don't own any classic SHMUP games that I am aware of. (Does Star Fox count? I wouldn't think it does at first glance.) I am purchasing the above this week for this stream, with the exception of Cactus which I got last week.

Eh Shumps are like the only type of genere I feel that Save States are okay to use particularly tnose that are painful to continue since you need to get the power ups all over again, so for someone like Naka who enjoys Shumps but sucks at them like most of us Save States are helpful to take the stress off a bit, but not too much. Other games I think Save States help are Kaizo Mario and The Final Fantasy Legend/SaGa 1 since Mutants/Espers learn and forget Skills at complete Random and thus you can lose your nuke attack to a weak attack at Random.

But anyway Naka is the type of guy who just wants to have fun even if he sucks at it, and he has beaten super hard Touhou Fan Games like Mega Mari without the use of Save States and even he wasn't sure if he was going to beat the game, Naka only uses them for Shumps like that.

Besides at least he didn't use the Konami code like Johnny did.  And Johnny ran out of Konami code uses. Not to mention Naka did [tornado fang] up a Save State and because of that had to take on the boss rush with only 2 Options.

Also I should warn you that Johnny sometimes speaks in garbled gibberish due to Skype [tornado fang] ups, as Ryan notes, but the other 2 guys Ryan and Clement come out fine.  Also the entire this is Post Commentary obviously unlike Naka who is Live.

Man I really have to give BenQ props for their 1ms monitor. With the proper configuration, honestly the difference in lag between it and my CRT tv playing an NES game was really hard to see even when you're looking for it. I tested this by pushing the same signal to both simultaneously.

If you want tight control with your games you need one of these.

I put it up against my 5ms monitor (most LCD pc monitors are 5ms) and you can see the lag difference pretty easily.

I will not be gaming on anything else from now on, haha.

Man! Summer is so far away for Under Night!!

Blazblue CP Extend is going to be soon though. I'll be happy about that!

I already have Melty Blood but retooled for Steam with their match making might be even better. I'll buy that again!

Xrd I was not impressed with for PS3. I did not find it fun. Someone got me Accent Core +R and that reminded me how good Guilty Gear was back then. Still the superior game IMO. I guess I just don't like Xrd... So I won't be getting that for steam.

Man. Upgrading to the Avermedia might actually be forcing me to do a whole system update. It is VERY picky about the PC hardware it is connected to and what drivers it interacts with. Kind of pissing me off really. I met all the requirements on paper, but it still will not work properly.

Future Streams:

Mighty No. 9
Feb. 13 (Sat)

Full normal mode play-through. Maybe more modes if I feel like it. There is suppose to be an online component right? Maybe Zan can play too?

Guess not! Got delayed again. Of course just after I posted this...

Street Fighter V Launch Marathon
Feb. 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 (Tue - Sat)

Ranked matches, friend matches (vs Zan and maybe others), tutorial / training. Going for the gold in SFV!! I have been putting in the work preparing for this game, and will try to storm the ranks as much as I can. I plan to be streaming within this range of days. I may not make every single day but I will probably be getting a lot of mileage out of SFV (provided it actually works on release week).

Dates subject to change. Start times are currently unknown but usually fall around 3PM - 6PM EST give or take on who I am streaming with.

Got the blueprints for my custom fight stick almost done. It is going to be tight but I want to see if I can get it done for SFV's release day.

I ordered a PS3/PS4/X360/XBO compatible control board. I'll be next-gen ready.

I ordered a full set of Sanwa buttons. Because the stick allows a home/xbox button I got a special one for that. Its a clear one where you can place an insert. I'll make some graphic for it. Ideally I'd like a holographic piece of the PS and Xbox logos.

I got a battop for my joystick. I started with my first stick having one. When I had to get a replacement joystick, because the original broke, it had a ball top. I'll try it but I'm not sure it'll be better.

This overhaul sports a metal support plate, and a plexiglass top. It needed to be completely redone to be able to use the new style clip in buttons, like the Sanwa ones. As a bonus I can now put art between the metal and plexiglass. Still working out what artwork to use...

It's going to be a tight schedule but I am really hoping it'll come together quickly.

I'll post pics when it is finish.

I've also heard similar things on YouTube on both PS4 and PC. Another classic "don't buy on Day 1 unless they fix it" moment. They should have just taken an extra month or two to actually iron out these issues before putting it out in the market and not follow what Arkham Knight did on PC.

Here's the Baby Pokemon I was talking about, and you can see some of the newer Pokemon like Roserade, Togekiss, and Electivire in their awesome glory.  Magmortar kind of looks worse than Magmar, despite his awesome Arm Cannon!  Like Grate Guy in Super Mario RPG or something.

A bit off topic of what you're currently steaming, but I got something in mind for Shmupvember.

Twinkle Star Sprites (Neo Geo, Saturn, Dreamcast, PC)
[youtube]youtu.be/zEhFh_-DVD8[/youtube]
- Dreamcast version review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB7NC61aiQY)
- Saturn version gameplay (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL-6VcOJrvg)

Before you diss this game for its cutesy look, let me say that this game can be pretty fun, especially if you can get a friend together. This game plays like a shoot 'em up version Puyo Puyo as you have to shoot down enemies that create chain explosions that can be used to send projectiles to your opponent but those attack can be countered back and forth a few more times to do special attacks. Countering attacks in groups of three or more indirectly can result in sending a boss enemy to your opponent to mess with them even more. Collecting a Fever Orb makes your movement and attacks faster which can make the game very hectic yet fun. It was released in arcades for the NeoGeo, but it was also ported to the Sega Saturn and Dreamcast. The Dreamcast version is technically the better version (better audio quality, smoother game, is actually in English) but the Saturn version (only in Japan) has fully voiced dialogue and an extra character in its remixed mode. DotEmu released an emulated wrapped version of the original arcade version for PC, Mac, and Linux although I heard the emulator it uses isn't that great but the files it uses can be ripped into another emulator like MAME or Final Burn Alpha.

Lords of Thunder (TurboGrafx CD, Sega CD, Wii VC*, PlayStation Network*)
[youtube]youtu.be/oGguCcizT6M[/youtube]

This game has one badass soundtrack. You take control of a knight in a horizontal shooter who can use different magical armors with unique element abilities. You can also pick the stages you want Mega Man-style, and in between stages you can use the crystals you collect in stages to replenish your energy and power-ups. Be warned, though: this game doesn't play nice. No such thing as an "Easy" mode, you lose shot power as you take damage, and you have 3 continues.

*Wii Virtual Console and PlayStation Network release has the TurboGrafx CD version.

There's also Tyrian 2000 which is free and comes all set-up no hassle with DOSBox plus soundtrack on GOG.com (https://www.gog.com/game/tyrian_2000) and I highly recommend it because Tyrian 2000.

[spoiler=Real reasion for Tyrian 2000]
[youtube]youtu.be/w025kQRMZwA[/youtube]

It's actually a pretty fun shoot 'em up that lets you customize your loadout (what you can get depends on the planet you're on), use your points to upgrade and buy weapons or ships, has lengthy story mode that a pretty interesting, a very good sound track, plays with a mouse, and a bunch of other cool [parasitic bomb] I haven't mentioned.[/spoiler]

So everything gets a super crazy badass ultra form... Except Kangaskhan?? The kid just pops out to help?? WHAT??

Also I am not averted by a game being 'super cutesy' or anything like that, Viper. I'll keep those in mind for next SHMUPVEMBER.

It's implied that the Baby is the one that Mega Evolves instead of the Mom, or at the very least how many of the fans interpet it, and Mega Kangaskhan is probably one of the most broken Mega Evolutions to exist, besides Mega Rayquaza.  The Ability Parental Bond basically has the Pokemon attack twice with the second attack doing half damage, but yeah pretty damn insane.

Odallus reminds me of Maldia Castilla (http://www.locomalito.com/maldita_castilla.php) by Locomalito, a freeware game that's inspired by Ghost 'n' Goblins but it's influence also comes from 2D arcade side-scrollers like Ghost 'n' Goblin, Rygar, Shinobi and others, plus medieval art and Spanish locales like the Kingdom of Castile (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdom_of_Castile), and The Amadis of Gaul (https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amad%C3%ADs_de_Gaula). He also made a pretty good Gradius clone called Hydorah (http://www.locomalito.com/hydorah.php) that's also freeware.

Behold Galvantula!

It's probably one of the few Pokemon that makes Thunder a viable option over Thunderbolt thanks to the Ability that increases the accuracy of all moves.  The Pre Evo is also one of the cutest things ever and is so tiny.

It is Street Fighter V day once again, training Amber, and getting our asses KICKED online. Should be good. Tim is on vacation this week, so Amber is filling the shoes.

I got some good news and bad news if you plan on picking up Twinkle Star Sprites for Shmupvember. The good news is that it was just released to Steam and it has online multiplayer. Bad news is the emulation isn't that good (unless DotEmu gives [parasitic bomb] to fix it) and some people are report laggy netcode. Even worse is that, unlike the DRM-free one on the Humble Store, you can't take the ROMs out and stick them in a better emulator like MAME.
I wish somebody would port the Saturn version.

That brings up an important question.... If you BUY a rom and emulator to play the rom like the DRM Free Humble Store one... Wouldn't that allow you to use that rom in another emulator legally? I see no reason why not.

So then get the Humble one and use MAME's online functionality???
Title: Re: SFV w/ Amber Sat. 5/21 @ 5 PM EST - GameDev Scrubs
Post by: ViperAcidZX on May 27, 2016, 07:42:37 AM
I never knew about MAME having online support to be honest, though I would like to try that out. If there is online support for RetroArch, I would like to try that out little more over than MAME since the Final Burn Alpha SVN core on RetroArch has a better GUI than MAME and doesn't crash on you like MAME does if you forget to plug in a controller when booting a game if you made some changes in the config files.

Anyways, If you buy the DRM-free build that's on the Humble Store, not the one on Steam, then you do get the ROM files for the game and an emulator to run it (the front-end DotEmu give you kinda sucks since you can't rebind keys and [parasitic bomb], plus you don't get as much options as you would with, let's say MAME), and you can use the ROM files with another emulator like MAME legally since you are buying the ROMs legit from the publishers instead of getting them off a file-sharing site or torrent.

Quote from: BiggNife's FAQ @ NeoGAF
Wait, ROMs and emulators? Is this illegal?

Nope. Emulators by themselves are perfectly legal, and since you purchased the ROMs straight from the publisher they're legally yours.
- http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=188496767#post188496767 (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=188496767#post188496767)

There is something that you should also be aware of if you're trying to run these games on newer versions of MAME.

Quote from: Common Issues and Questions (FAQ) - MAME Documentation
Why do my Neo Geo ROMs no longer work? How do I get the Humble Bundle Neo Geo sets working?
Recently the Neo Geo BIOS was updated to add a new version of the Universal BIOS. This was done between 0.171/0.172, and results in an error trying to load Neo Geo games with an un-updated neogeo.zip set.

This also affects the Humble Bundle set: the games themselves are correct and up to date as of MAME 0.173 (and most likely will remain so) though you’ll have to pull the ROM set .ZIP files out of the package somehow yourself. However, the Neo Geo BIOS set (neogeo.zip) included in the Humble Bundle set is incomplete as of the 0.172 release of MAME.

We suggest you contact the provider of your sets (Humble Bundle and DotEmu) and ask them to update their content to the newest revision. If enough people ask nicely, maybe they’ll update the package.
I ran into this issue before when I tried to run some NeoGeo games with newer MAME versions, but I was able to bypass that issue by forcing on MAME with the outdated neogeo.zip ROM with command line parameters (you could make a *bat file to run the commands as well). A front-end like MAMEUI or LaunchBox also worked for me as well.

Title: Re: SFV w/ Amber Sat. 5/21 @ 5 PM EST - GameDev Scrubs
Post by: ViperAcidZX on May 28, 2016, 08:05:14 PM
There's not a whole lot that DotEmu are shoveling out when it comes to emulator-wrapped ports of arcade games that I can find that also give you the ROM files to use them another emulator like the DRM-free stuff on the Humble Store. Besides the DRM-free versions of the Metal Slug games, the only co-op stuff I can find are the Shock Trooper games (top-down shoot 'em ups), Pulstar, Blazing Star, and Ironclad (horizontal shooters), King of the Monsters (a kaiju wrestling game), and Sengoku 3 (beat 'em up), though I haven't play those games but I might get my hands dirty to try them out. They also have 2-minute demo of most of the games for Firefox or Google Chome browsers if anyone wants to try them out. But speaking of emulator-wrapped ports, a few weeks ago, did Sega put a new emulator front-end for the Sega Genesis games they got on Steam, and what's cool is that they also give you the ROM file of the Genesis games you own with them on Steam. Most of the co-op stuff are beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe though, plus a Gauntlet-styled game called Crackdown (not to be mistaken for the game on Xbox 360), and if you squint Sonic 2, and 3 & Knuckles.

Aww, I missed. >8|

Anywho, it looks like DotEmu patched Twinkle Star Sprites on Steam. The arcade emulation has been improved to be closer to the arcade version though I'm seeing some reviews that the sound isn't synced perfectly and the problem of the resolution not saving has been fixed.

I have a make shift Franken-Computer setup that is enough to play AM2R. I think it would choke completely on MightyNo9 sadly. That will have to wait until I can repair the big rig, sadly...

I loved Zero Mission so I fully expect to love this one. I have NEVER played Metroid II on Gameboy so I am going in blind.

I hope no important files to you and your work were lost from your computer. Oddly enough I never got to play the original Metroid II on the Gameboy either, but the same thing happened with me for Zero Mission since I never played the original NES Metroid until Zero Mission included it as an unlockable. AM2R also has since options if you want to make it feel like Super Metroid, Metroid II, or Zero Mission in terms of controls, something that I also dug about Streets of Rage Remake.

I've adopted a more standard schedule. I have split up the days, and they're different types of streams. One is live game development, programming, animating, sound, the works. I am building a port for Hamster Drop in Unity from start to finish on broadcast. Hope to see you guys there! The gamedev stream is gaining momentum and I have a lot of fun doing that. Youtube channel to follow once I learn enough about video editing to make it acceptably watchable.

Live Game Development
Every Wednesday @ 8 PM (EST)
Part of the Back-2-Back WIP Wednesday stream! Tune in earlier at 6 PM EST for LD's animation and art show. He is the lead artist for Skylance Studio.

Weekend Gaming Hangout
Every Saturday Evening (EST)
