Title: Wiigret?
Post by: Protodude on November 14, 2008, 03:47:48 AM
This is a topic I hear about all the time: regretting buying a Wii.

Anyone out there truly bored with their Wii and/or regret even purchasing one? Personally, I love my Wii and have not once regretted my purchase. Although I have to admit, there are days when it goes un-played.

I expect this trend to dissipate within the next year as 2009 is going to rock. (http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?start=0&id=39727)

EDIT: Ugh, just noticed. Wrong forum. Move plz!

I regret it. I really, really do. Twilight Princess was more fun on the Cube, Prime 3 wasn't all that great, and I can't stand the controller. Almost everything else has a superior version on the PS3 and/or 360. Anything on the VC is easily played for free with an emulator..Yeah. I regret it.

As for the list..the only thing that really stuck out for me was Lightsaber Duels. : /

I don't regret buying a Wii either.  I loves me some Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Twilight Princess, and Metroid Prime 3.  Now, if only I had No More Heroes. :|

Brawl is almost exactly the same as Melee, but I've never been a fan of the series to begin with. Mario Galaxy had a terrible camera, which ruined the game for me. Prime was okay, but as good as the previous two, and I've already bitched and complained about Twilight Princess way to many times.

Anyway, walking away.

Honestly, those people who regret buying a Wii are just very silly individuals. They feel most of the time that Nintendo doesn't cater to them while ignoring Nintendo's recent offerings, the Virtual Console, and a good influx of decent to above average third party games. Their most common excuse is "Nintendo doesn't cater to hardcore gamers" when in reality they themselves aren't (as much as I hate the whole hardcore/casual classifications) hardcore enough to find things that can appeal to them on the system. The whole regretting a console purchase really seems stupid since it isn't the console but the games that make a system. If your tastes aren't on console X, don't get it or wait for them to appear. Simple no?

Now then getting back on topic, I will admit that after the launch of Super Smash Bros. Brawl / Mario Kart Wii things haven't been the liveliest from the big red N, however if there's one thing I can do it's be patient. 2009 already looks to be [tornado fang]ing awesome based on just what we know and that doesn't cover any stealth surprises Nintendo might have planned for us. The ones who'll benefit from this are the true gamers really.

Finally, no I don't regret buying a Wii, as a matter of fact, I love my little white system. It's given me a chance to experience games that I wouldn't have otherwise due to age/availability as well as innovate in a way that I actually care about. (Not to mention mother[tornado fang]ing Super Mario Galaxy.) People are all different though, so don't take my word for all of this.

EDIT - Why the hell do I feel like I'm at NeoGAF? XD

No way in hell.

There are perhaps one or two games I didn't need to buy (NiGHTS Journey of Dreams......why?).  But for the system as a whole, I love it.  And I STILL haven't gotten my hands on Galaxy yet.  Plus Punch-Out!! is on its way.

Oh, and Zelda's Helm Splitter pjwns on the Wii version, period.  I also enjoy having more than two items accessible.  I'm amazed at how much Wind Waker camera and an accurate portrayal of the sun's movements means to some people, but to each their own.

I don't think Nintendo doesn't cater to me, nor do I think I'm a hardcore gamer. The system can be fun, in small amounts. I probably WOULD enjoy the system if I was able to play the majority of the games that I do enjoy with the classic controller -- But don't get me wrong, thats not the only reason I'm not a fan of the system.

So don't put words into my mouth. I'm not "silly" for having an opinion, Nintendo just isn't offering anything all that mystifying.

I will admit though, I forgot about Mario Kart Wii. I [tornado fang]ing love that [parasitic bomb]. So I guess that it was worth it, if just for that.

I'm surprised.  Mario Kart Wii was one of the big let-downs, unless you're good at directing your attention solely at the online mode.  The AI in that game blows, and this is coming from someone who defends Double Dash.

But there is another unavoidable reason to love your Wii:

Hey I didn't put words in anyone's mouth... Sorry if it sounded like that. Still though, it's just weird to me that someone can grow to dislike a game console you invest in. If you're buying the system, you're acknowledging that you like something on it or the promise of something for it so why not give it a chance to get there first?

I don't, seriously, those "hardcore" gamers need to see that there are good games right now and that there are even more coming 2009 instead of troling the Wii everytime.

Good games of the top of my head (Including multiplatform games):
-Zelda Twilight Princess
-Metroid Prime 3
-Mario Galaxy
-Smash Bros Brawl
-No More Heroes
-Wario Land Shake It
-Metal Slug Anthology
-SNK Classics Vol. 1
-Guilty Gear Accent Core
-Sonic and the Secret Rings
-Mario Kart Wii
-Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn/Godess of Dawn
-Tales of Symphonia Dawn of New World/Knights of Ratatosk
-Disaster Day of Crisis
-Captain Rainbow
-Animal Crossing City Folk
-Tenchu 4
-Fatal Frame 4

Arguable
-Wii Music (Biggest example of love it or hate it ever)
-Wii Fit
-Wii Sports
-Rayman Raving Rabbid series (what can I say? I adore those fluffy and crazy guys XD)

In the Future
-Tatsunoko VS Capcom
-Sin & Punishment 2
-Punch Out
-No More Heroes Desperate Struggle
-Pikmin 3
-Future Mario game
-Future Zelda game
-Kizuna
-Mad World
-Muramasa The Demon Blade
-Monster Hunter 3
-Klonoa Door to Phantomile
-Another Code/Trace Memory R
-The Conduit

And again, that's just off the top of my head, not to mention there's also Wiiware and the Virtual Console.

XD Seriously? If you ask the "serious" smashers the biggest complain is that it is too different from Melee.

Title: Re: Wii regret?
Post by: Protoman Blues on November 14, 2008, 04:46:39 AM
Listen, everyone is entitled to their opinion of the Wii.  Some people love it and it's just not for some people.  Arguing tastes in systems/games is pretty silly, if you ask me.  However, let me offer my analysis of the current state of Wii Hate (I love it when I rhyme).  Keep in mind, this is NOT directed at anyone here at all.  It's just my opinion...

Ahem...

When the Wii first came out, a lot of people were skeptical about the WiiMote controller and what it could do.  "Motion Sensor Controls?  That's TOO RADICAL!"  As we all know, the awesome 80's word can be used for both a good or bad or curious description.  Then the system came out, and it was overwhelmingly popular.  Sure, their was untold of praise, but there were also complaints.  No good games vs. [tornado fang] You, MARIO GALAXY ROCKS!  Wii Sports is a Fad vs. SEND ME YOUR MII NOW.  And so on and so forth.  However, if you really think about it, not all that much has changed in terms of praise or complaints about gaming, except for one small teensy weensy thing...The Internet.

Thanks to the Net, your average, run-of-the-mill, unsocial nerdish gamer was allowed the freedom to express their hate or foolish fanboyish love of said games or systems.  NOW, they actually had an outlet besides their primary clique of friends.  And even in this golden era of constant information there were still complaining.  Hell, probably more so now that they have an outlet.  I mean, do you wanna know what I thought the saddest display I've ever seen in gaming history was, besides the death threat to EGM for their Nude DOA Volleyball April Fools Prank?  People who complained about Brawl Updates.  For [tornado fang]'S sake, Nintendo is actually doing you a favor with the Smash Dojo, updating it with new info every weekday, and people STILL complained?  How is that possible?  I was amazed at the impatience and downright spoiled nastiness I saw with that.  LoL, perhaps that's my age showing.  For, I remember a time where the ONLY info I got was from Nintendo Power, and that came out once every month.  But that's beside the point.

People are always going to complain.  It's human nature, and it's 100% NERDISH nature.  A lot of people hate the Wii cause they don't feel it's coming out with the "real" games yet, and instead pumping out the casual "Wii Sports" type [parasitic bomb], not to mention all the loads of crap that come out on it.  Even I was amazed at the popularity of Wii Sports in Japan, a game in which we got for free.  Then, they announced Wii Fit, and a lot of gamers were in an uproar.  LoL, I'll never forget how people thought this game wasn't going to be huge, whereas I knew it was.  It made Nintendo a fuckton of money, and guess what?  People still complained.  Amazing, huh.  They keep saying or preaching that the Wii can't continue to last this way, with the shovelware and "casual" gaming, and for the most part, have been proven wrong on every occasion.

Anyway, to my main Wii Point.  There are numerous reasons why people hate the Wii.

-Some people just actually don't like the games, and it's simply not for them.  This is probably the most rational reason.
-Some gamers hate it due to it's popularity.  There are people in this world who think that it's cool to hate or dislike things that society deems popular or "cool" because either they want to be deviants and outcasts or they think they're "taking a stand".
-Some gamers hate it out of pure spite for the fact that they were 100% wrong about it's popularity or how well the games did.  They feel foolish, so there natural response is to feign hatred.
-Some gamers don't like it due to the fact that grown un-nerdy adults and other "non-gamers" have sort of infiltrated their sanctuary.  And unlike the recent influx of hot chicks they see in the comic book store, these outsiders are not welcome.

It's funny, actually.  I'm writing a paper for Sociology on how Instant Information and Communication has Altered Our Society.  The Information Age is a very interesting time for sociological study.  I find it fascinating myself.  Anyway though, those are my reasons for Wii Hate.

And it's usually the first one, like how I treat my PS3 like a redheaded stepchild when I know full well it has plenty of good games.
...for someone that doesn't have my taste.

That said, I do not regret the Wii, in fact, I now have an entire collection of fun, classic Nintendo games all in one console that I'll keep for as long as I'm around.

Agreed. Half the time it isn't even to state your opinions so much as to see how much of a difference there is between your own and the rest of the world. That is in my case anyways.

not one bit do i regret buying the Wii. i absolutely love it. no complaints of any of the retail games i have for it. (at least, no Wii specific complaints.) i may regret a couple VC/WiiWare purchases, but no real harm done.

i kinda regret buying an X-Box, though. i don't really care for any of its exclusives, and i could've got the multiplatform stuff on any other console.

I'm bored of it. There hasn't been anything really stand out that I must go out and buy it immediately and really, I'm tired of Brawl and Mario Kart. Sonic Unleashed was looking fine, but then the 360 version began to show off how much more amazing it was. Passed that, the Wii really is in the same boat as my PS3 in that there's nothing coming out that I particularly care about.

Because a page full of PB avatars would be the ultimate mind [tornado fang]? 8D

More like the ultimate tribute to PB's Ego next to making the entire site PBPM.

NO... Thats one step closer for PB in taking over RPM...  8D

Which is ultimately THIS.

But yeah, another good thing about the Wii, it's flexible regarding Internet and TV connections. No need to get rid of it for physical component reasons for a long, long time.

...and well I'd just as soon lug around a SD/HDTV than give up my Wii.

I regretted buying a Wii for myself. Sold it with the 8 games I had with it and 2 wiimotes and so on for $350 back in March.

Two reasons why I don't like the Wii:
1- Not many good games or they lack decency with the wiimote (perhaps I'm too oldschool)
2- I don't wanna be breaking my 58 inch LCD TV or anything else.

I only have, and I'm completely honest here, two games for my Wii; SSBB (a must-have, of course  bVd ), and "Party Games," which is a third-party shitfest. But I still like my Wii.  >w<

The Wii was probably my single best investment last year along with food. I haven't disconnected the thing since July '07. :D

Galaxy is videogame perfection. Corruption has pretty much the best controls ever. Brawl I just can't stop playing, even though I'm not a big Smash Bros. fan. Mario Kart Wii is too addictive. No More Heroes is stylish. I have my reservations on Twilight Princess, but it's Zelda and was my first real Wii experience. Then there's excellent GC compatibility, WiiWare and the Virtual Console, which gives me oldies just the way they were.

The usual argument is that there aren't many good Wii games out there, but to be honest, I didn't "love" more than 10 of the PS1's four-million-game library. In the end I enjoy relatively the same amount of titles on every console. Even if Nintendo only delivers first-party quality, I'm all set. And I think even hardcore whores admire the Wii concept to some extension. I certainly had a lot of fun watching Galaxy mop the floor with competition last year.

Maybe I get way too much out of my games, so I don't mind certain limitations. I think Nintendo chose a very interesting path and slowly proves that gameplay will always earn more positive feedback than flashy tech aspects. What I've been experiencing with the Wii isn't available anywhere else. And I'll never understand this obsession with graphics. Good art will never look bad.

Next year will be awesome for The Conduit alone.

i don't regret buying the system.
I bought only 3 Games so far and i play more games on the DS or PSP but when there are good games i will play them since i have the possibility to do so. I can try all kind of games since my wii is modded and if there is a good game i might buy it. And there are a few games on my list to buy but they are not yet released and Nintendo is still rare with good RPGs on the console.

 [objection!]

got to say I never owned a wii, but I do have extensive time using one and i can tell you right now that its not worth the price tag attached, its motion controls are in short a joke, barely capable of a simple task at its best (bowling, and its still buggy or unresponsive at times) or terribly unplayable at best (like boxing and many other games that use extensive wii controls) others basically map button presses to moving the remote, preforming a scripted action that is less intuitive and responsive than an actual button, like using a analog controller for megaman classic games that occasionally jams and doesn't work. few of the games made good use of the wii remote and the ones that did relied entirely on the pointer, something, the wiis electronics are probably about as technologically advanced as tilt and tumble kirby and i doubt the total manufacturing cost exceeds 10 dollars so have fun ripping yourself off the high way with nintendo, thats something that the other competitors didn't do, granted nintendo isn't made of money but they'd much rather make money instead of focusing on market penetration, another problem with this price tag is since its obligatory to make money off of everything everything that would have made nintendo's system great was cut out, hard drive feature to support the now utterly useless and unnessisary connect 24, more ram and perhaps with the help of the hard drive, virtual memory so multitasking would be possible dramatically increasing the usability, (whats that you want to check your messages from a friend, better restart your whole system then) better motion controls that don't suck for both the nunchuck and the wii remote being released only now in 09 and sure to cost 30 a pop, extremely high priced VC games and 0 hardcore games that offer a fundamental change in gameplay other than waggle really hard, almost every game thats of quality doesn't benefit from the wii's hardware at all with again the exception of the pointer, and while it is nice to play an FPS well on a console it quickly becomes old once you realize its still the same move around in a box full of aesthetically pleasing but functionally unusable objects while shooting other dudes. I'd rate Resident evil 4's strategy involvement and interactive environments above almost all of todays modern games although it looks like left for dead might beat that, almost every hardcore game that offers something fresh and new is skipping the wii it looks like.

overall I have to say wii has not changed the way games are played. the controls may be different but interface is how you interact with games not how you play them, nintendo is currently running on hot air and once they realize the average casual gamer doesn't want to buy 100 clones of casual puzzle games maybe they will do something truelly ground breaking and innovative instead of dumbing down game play mechanics for casual games and releasing crummy repetitive sequals to the hardcore.

Mmmmm...correct grammar. <3 *Is a Grammar Nazi*

Anyway, as for the main point, do I regret buying a Wii? My answer:

Hell no.

I'm a loyal fan of Nintendo (that's not to say I won't dabble in other systems, though), and I personally love my white box of fun. Without a Wii, I wouldn't have played No More Heroes, a game so deliciously OTT and awesome, it's probably become on of my favourite games of all time. =D

I actually hate capital letters and don't understand their value in regards to sentences. Although the punctuation is not my strong suit either, at least with a keyboard. i have a tendency to hit , instead of . on reflex.
but really while my writing isn't perfect I was never bulldozed about it before here and back then i was probably worse. apparently there was a purge that happened at some time.

I don't regret buying a Wii because I haven't bought one. I am a fan of Wii Sports, though. It's fun playing it at my friend's house. I wasn't a fan of Super Mario Galaxy, though. The camera annoyed me way too much to enjoy it. It's like they copy and pasted the camera script from Super Mario 64 and said, "Good enough." They obviously didn't factor in the possibility that you aren't always going to be walking on a flat plane. In a game where you're only walking on tiny spheres most of the time, this is a huge flaw into what would otherwise be a great game. Unfortunately, this is a flaw that can't be ignored because it's always staring you in the face from the very beginning of the game.

I did like Mario Kart Wii, though. It takes a little time to get used to the controls, but I did enjoy it. Not as good as Double Dash, though.

I really want to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Klonoa, and maybe a little Punch Out. I sucked at the NES version, so I'll probably suck just as badly at the Wii version.

The bad part about the wii is his NO INTERESTING TITLES thingy, I played SMG and it was decent, but also it's another "go rescue the damn princess again like EVAR!!" just because a new character named after a really old character (pauline) is in the game doesn't mean that the game will be more interesting!!

.....and is a SM64 wannabe.....

I don't regret playing wii because I don't have one, I just go to the mall and I rent it for 1 hour of play or more, If Im going to decide for buying a wii, then i'm going to hide on a cave with army-supplies because it would take me a era to decide it, the wii is a elegant playing station with it has his bad's.

I will buy MP1 and MP2 for Wii just to show support (Along with Pikmin 1 and 2, I love those games.), and a ton of those games are appealing to me in many ways.

what SMG did you play? there's no Pauline in there. and there is more at stake in the game than just Peach.

Considering I just recently bought Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, I'd say I don't regret my purchase.

I also don't regret camping out in front of Wal-Mart from 4 A.M. to the mid- night launch.

F.Y.I. If you really need to camp out in front of a store to get a new system, Wal-Mart is the place to do it. It's open 24 hours a day which means access to bathrooms and food.

I hope Animal Crossing 3 is as good as Animal Crossing 1, And allows you to use the Classic Controller, or else its charm will be wasted on me and my resistance to play games with too much Motion Sensing.
Title: Re: Wiigret?

Judging from impressions from various places, it would seem as though the experience in Animal Crossing: City Folk isn't any different from the DS version (Wild World). Thing is, I can't tell if that really is the truth or just hyperbole from the folks who don't care enough to be truthful about the game due to its nature. Either way, it's an up in the air purchase for me, if more people I can trust post impressions on it, that might be the true deciding factor for me.

"Wiigret"?

Not at all.

Though I do think it's a bit foolish to go at it with the Wii being your only/main source of gaming fun. My PS2 and gaming-ready (well, it won't run top notch games, but it's enough to get me Fallout 3!) PC are more than ample enough to make up where the Wii couldn't hope to carry by itself. My PS3...hopefully will start vindicating itself by another year's time.  -u-'

And in less than a month, games like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, the very game that made me go "SF4 who?!", will be out and about for the importing. Then there will be others like MadWorld, Monster Hunter Tri, Sengoku Musou 3 and Oboro also in the pipeline.

In short, yeah, 2009 is probably going to be the year where the Wii "wii-lly" starts to shine. Just like it took the DS 2 or so years to really get on the stick (thanks to devs seeing it was not just a quirky "fad"), such will be the way for the Wii.
