Hey RPM! It's Ciel. I came on to warn you all about a worm that will be hitting the internet come April 1st! I implore you that this is not an April Fools joke!
I will provide you links to the information on this worm. Protect your computer and shut it off for all of Wednesday!
What will Conflicker C do to a computer?
The worm will find the vulnerability in these systems and spreads through the infected computer by carrying out an embedded code that will pass through one computer to another (RPC request). The group of infected computers is called a botnet, and once the creators of Conflicker C have the botnet in place, Conflicker C will cause havac to all of them.
The Conficker C worm will then disable or shutdown different Microsoft operations such as Windows Automatic Update, Windows Security Center, Windows defender and Windows Error Reporting. Conflicker C can also attach itself to sychost.exe, explorer.exe and services exe. Conflicker C will connect to a server and can upload information from your computer and install various malware files.
It will launch attacks on various websites and send out though unsolicited emails we all have received at one time or another.
It will reverse computer reset points
Prevent restart in save mode
Allow access for worms through shareware
Slow your system down
Disable various functions on your computer
Disallow access to security and antivirus websites"

Lol
And they only mention Winblows.
-
Luckly, I already knew about it through another board. Luckly enough, I'm not stupid enough to click ads or download potential viruses and worms, that's how they are usually transferred. Don't worry FSP, they will soon hit the mac real soon.. hehe.
-
Mac's worse than Windows.
Besides that, the virus itself is a joke. I'm just waiting for people to think it's actually the end of the world. Month old news is old.
One way to avoid most background installations (spyware, malware, etc) via the web is to disable java and flash features. Via firefox, this is pretty easy.
Now if everybody using windows actually gets infected, it'd be the fault of Microsoft themselves since they can force background updates (which they do).
Anyway, <3 linux.
-
My computer's already destroyed. And already well on it's way to repair.
Don't know if it's conficker, don't care. Also
Red says:
I'm probably gonna shut down my computer all day
SKUt is still working on Compah says:
But that means you'll have to ...
GO OUTSIDE
Red says:
I know
It scares me too
-
In any case, I still have Windows XP, and no, mine doesn't do forceful updates, but it can annoyingly replay those ads each time you refresh your browser.
If Mac's harder than Windows, I say it's the lack of simplicity, no server (the box), and hard to reach USB ports. And don't worry, I got a protective firewall.
I'm pretty sure that it can spread to other brands of the computer if powerful enough. Either way, it's still Microsoft's fault for actually not going after the guys who make this stuff, and Apple for doing the same.
Or maybe not, considering the other side of the globe is already at the day of fools.
-
I like how the quoted information misspelled "havoc".
-
Considering my luck with computers, I'll just spend tomorrow reinstalling Sabayon Linux.
It'll take hours to get it fully setup.

If you have an HP or a Compaq, promptly discard it and put a custom computer from FSP on the top of you list of things to get. [blantlyobvious]Also, having vista doesn't help either.[/blantlyobvious] Get 7 when that comes out or if you're willing to get dirty, try linux.

Not everyone can afford that kind of rubbish.

Ladies and Gentlemen: my April Fools prank.

well at least get a dell or something.

Ladies and Gentlemen: my April Fools prank.
People expect it to be a prank, that's the irony of the date it's on. It can be any other day but they planned it on this day expecting people not to believe it. Try reading the 1st link I provided. Read it all I dare you. I don't think it'll look like a prank anymore. :\
-
Ah.
You scared me when you told someone to get a DELL.
I hope you're not serious.
Although, I'm one to talk, I've still got a Compaq.
-

Nah, I know it's not a prank. I just thought I'd make a joke. :P
Even if it somehow is a prank, I've got no problem falling for it as long as I don't get any damn worms on my computers.
-
I wouldn't think a terrorist would be all "Hey, we're going to launch a mass attack on a holiday known well for bullshit, but we're serious" if they really are going to do something. It sounds too stupid to me. Plus, some of us just aren't the most trustworthy of people so I'm not believing this until I see it. Alternately, turning off your computer for a day just for caution's sake is no big deal. Also, if it's real we'll know because the survivors will very clearly see that 90% of RPM is missing.
Go outside. Damn.
-
I think the worm is supposed to infect anything that connects to the internet.. downloads or not.. if I read it correctly anyway. ;O;
-
But outside has fresh air, and icky bugs. D:
-
Take an all-day offline game break, yo..
-
But outside has fresh air, and icky bugs. D:
Play console games all day long! 8D That's what I'll do anyway. owo
-
s-sorry, I don't think I can do that...
-
Ah.
You scared me when you told someone to get a DELL.
I hope you're not serious.
Dead serious. Yes I know dell systems are supreme dickery with the whole not quite standard power-supply bullshit, but I don't think Sky gives a [parasitic bomb] about not being able to easily upgrade her motherboard.
-
How do avoid Conficker while still being a wankah:
1- Unplug your internet adaptor.
2- Turn on the TV and wait for news on Conficker. If it's really that big, it WILL be on the news.
3- Play offline games.
4- If you're too big of a wankah to have offline games, play offline console games.
5- If you're too big of a wankah to have a console, draw on MSpaint.
6- If you're too big of a wankah to draw on MSpaint, doodle on paper or write.
7- If you're too big of a wankah to do anything listed from 3-6, call a friend.
8- If you're too big of a wankah to have friends, I feel sorry for you and think you shouldn't have a computer anyway.
How to avoid Conficker otherwise:
1- Turn off computer tonight
2- Go outside
3- Wait for news on TV

Last I checked the only thing my parents were able to upgrade in their DELL is the Video Card.
Everything else requires DELL specific overpriced crap.
But it's fairly old, perhaps DELL has changed it's ways...slightly.
Still cheaper and more effective to just build-it-yourself.
Don't know how to put the pieces together? get someone who does to do it for you!
As for playing console games all day, I don't think I could do that.
Don't got much to play on my PS2 anymore, need to find my Game Gear and repair it though.
That'll take me hours.
-
That'll take me hours.
Which means it would pass time you would normally sit around and idly wait out.
-
In any case, I still have Windows XP, and no, mine doesn't do forceful updates, but it can annoyingly replay those ads each time you refresh your browser.
Google is your friend. Let me rephrase, instead of forceful updates, think invisible updates that you aren't supposed to be aware of. Kinda like Comcast's invisible bandwidth limitation and Macintosh's old usage policy, they're a bunch of a crap and you won't know it 'till someone comes up to you with a statement and a piece of paper that'd ruin the rest of your day.
Rad: The new Sabayon Linux (4.0r1) has been a pain in my rear. I'm sticking with 3.4f, Fedora 10 and Mandriva 2009. As far as any other OSs go, I'm sticking with the official BlackXP and Violet Vista releases, though still trying and testing others as per usual. AND GET SOME TAN! My skin's ugly as it is. >_>
Hey, did Rockmon just promote my custom computer services? 8D
But yeah, get a DELL and you won't have to worry about this new virus at all. >_> Buy an expensive system from them and get all the more the bloatware that'll kill it anyway.
As for games, anybody up for StarCraft? :W
-
Okay, so my day will consist of Formatting and installing Sabayon Linux, and while it's busy I find my Sega Game Gear, Repair it, maybe play it if the repairs don't butcher my dainty little fingers and thumbs.
And then find a console game to play.
Even though most of my PS2 games are just compilations of ancient games.
And I don't have a Sega Genesis anymore, or an N64, geez I need to consider getting some old consoles.
I have a DS with emulators! I'll play that!
Sounds like it'll be fun.
Sitting in my room alone.
With video games.
-
I'll be at someone's house eating cake and getting wasted all day! 8D
-
Boo I want some cake!
-
10000z says if this virus is as bad as it sounds, then I'm guessing that the 1st is just the earliest activation date. i.e. if you have it but keep your computer off or disconnected from the internet through the 1st, then as soon as you power up/re connect to the internet, you'll be hit by it.
EDIT:
Hey, did Rockmon just promote my custom computer services? 8D

Yeah I just promoted your custom box services. As for the shitware that comes on dells and other "name brands", revo uninstaller, a registry cleaner, and anti spyware should fix that.
-
That would suck.
-
Thought you guys would like to check out this site:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/
Oodles of helpful.
-
well [parasitic bomb]. even if you dual boot, if this virus has partition editing capabilities, even linux is [tornado fang]'d.
-
Boo more suckage.
-
well just do a [tornado fang]ing heavy duty [parasitic bomb] scan (anti-virus and anti-spyware) and hopefully that'll clean it out if you have it.
-
I only have Shawsecure though.
-
hmmm speaking of which, isn't in already april 1st in many places in the world? o.o
-
in 75% of America yes...
-
Really? It's only 8:00pm here.
-
wait this is america only? o.o;
-
maybe I have that mixed up...
how did timezones work again?
-
Night what are you smoking? I'm EST and it's only 2310
-
I hear stories about internet worms all the time, and how everyone should panic, and then nothing ever happens.
-
I'm not smoking anything! I just forgot which way the timezones went! ;;
-
well [parasitic bomb]. even if you dual boot, if this virus has partition editing capabilities, even linux is [tornado fang]'d.
I LOLed, but yeah, if that's the case, burn a roadstarter disc or something with the necessary tools to remake/edit bootloaders and recover data from the hard drive without mounting any data from the disc onto the drive.

11pm for me, time to make popcorn and order a bottle of sake!

*Enters topic*
*Reads*
*Pets his DS, Wii, & newly acquired sketchpad and considers himself ready for tomorrow*
*Remembers that he doesn't have a computer now anyways*
Sometime, life eases one potiential headache with another. XD

Meh, I'm too sexcellent and popular to get a virus!

Still not enough however to avoid a Critical Hit. XD

Sure thing, JellyMan. You haven't had a good dosage of BFF in a while! Lets-a-go!

hmmm *has a job, but upon the realization that my brother needs the net for work and for his Xbox live, he'll just have to manage the bs-ness upon coming back home from work*

I can do that, as long my brother doesn't hog his 360 when I come back from work :/

bootloaders scare me. AKA every time I've ever messed with one, it's always resulted in a [tornado fang]'d up system. Also I have a mac-tel so I should be fine.
-
Meh, I'm too sexcellent and popular to get a virus!
Watch, now that you've said this the only RPM member that gets hit will be YOU (and Rad)
-
Nah, I'm awesome! Although, I expect anyone who gets hit with this virus to make this sound. (http://www.folkbildning.nu/wilhelm.wav)
-
I'll pick up my computer tower and scream "WHAT AM I DOWNLOADING FOOOOORRRRRRRRararararar!?"

Well there's only one man who can save the day from this cyber-threat.. (http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x271/mrTsuyoshi/Drawings/tron.png)

Anyway.. I do have a XP that's run on a Dell computer, so no worries there. :p
... Damn, if only I have the StarCraft installer.. Ah well, at least I get some epicness from Tsuyoshi.
-
My day has been ruined.
I planned to skip today with installing Fedora 10.
Boo, my disc didn't work. >: |
-
Everyone still here? -_-
-
...I am. >_>
I finished installing Fedora today.
Wasn't able to find and fix my Sega Game Gear though.
My mom won't let me search the boxes in her room for it. >: |
