Me too, but the graphics could be better. Also, am I the only one that thinks Ammy looks like a puppy in the scans?

I'm sure the game will look good in motion. If it's anything like it's predecessor, still shots of the game won't do it justice.

Day One, if ever it gets here.

September 1, 2009 - Last week's big 7-Eleven reveal, Okamiden, has turned out to be a DS title. As promised, this week's Famitsu got the first word on the new game.

Fully titled Okamiden: Chisaki Taiyou, the followup to the critically acclaimed PS2 original puts players in control of what appears to be a new wolf character, Chibiterasu. Picture a baby version of Okami main character Amaterasu, right down to the red marks. We can't share the artwork with you until Capcom provides official online media, but one word comes to mind when seeing Chibiterasu: adorable.

Okamiden follows the events of the original Okami by a few months, in a world now restored to peace. Issun, Amaterasu' guide from the original, accompanies Chibiterasu to Sakuya, the girl who called Okami to the world in the original. Sakuya asks Chibiterasu for some form of help.

You take control of Chibiterasu in a game whose fundamentals appear rooted in the original Okami. Just as you did in the original, you'll be exploring the game's brilliantly colored (well, for the DS) world while combatting monsters and solving puzzles. Much of the gameplay is being kept under wraps at present, but the combat system does appear to resemble that of the original.

The switch to the DS brings about some major changes thanks to the stylus. Capcom will be letting you use the stylus to make direct drawings with your Celestial Brush. Your uses of the brush once again include such things as drawing circles to make trees spring to life with flowers and drawing lines to slash enemies.

Also new for Okamiden is the presence of a partner character for Chibiterasu. Accompanying the baby wolf on his adventure is Kuninushi, the son of a swordsman named Susano who appeared in the original (as you play through Okamiden, you'll apparently find out why Kuninushi is suddenly able to have a son despite there being only a few months gap from the original).

The two characters will have to work together. As an example, there's a section of the world where the two have to cross a crumbling bridge. They wouldn't be able to get across with Kuninushi riding on Chibiterasu's back. To clear this part of the game, you'll have to make use of the stylus to draw out a path for Kuninushi to follow on his own. Once Kuninushi crosses to the other side of the bridge, you can directly move Chibiterasu across the bridge.

The original Okami was the swan song for Clover Studio before key members of the studio went on to form Platinum Games. From what we can tell, Okamiden is being developed within Capcom. The game's producer is Motohide Eshiro, producer of Ace Attorney Investigations and director of Onimusha 2. The game's director is Kuniomi Matsushita, a planner on Dino Crisis who went on to direct the Wii version of Okami.

In an interview with Famitsu, the two revealed a surprising start for Okamiden. In December of last year, Matsushita approached Eshiro and said that he wanted to make a portable version of Okami. Not only that, but he'd already created an advanced prototype. After seeing the prototype, Eshiro decided to turn it into a full product.

The magazine asked Matsushita why he wanted to bring Okami to a portable system. His response was that he wanted to give as many people as possible a chance to know the charms of Okami's visuals and game systems.

We already know the charms of Okami (it was our game of the year in 2006), and now we look forward to getting another look at the game on the small screen. Okamiden isn't due out in Japan until 2010, but we'll hopefully get a sneak peak at the Tokyo Game Show later this month.

It IS a puppy :3 I wonder where Chibiterasu came from.

Awwwwwwww, adorable!

Also, the Stylus should make the drawing easier!

Drawing easier yeah, but if I have to use ABXY or even R, things are going to get annoying.

This is very, very good news.

Honestly, there's no better system than the DS to have a game like this on.

Looks promising so far. Graphics are pretty suck, but it's the DS so what'd ya expect... I'll deal.
"Wait, if Ammy's your mom, then who did she...?"
"Gruh?"
"Not that it's any of my business! Anyway!"

---

Well, I haven't gotten very far, but it's basically Okami lite, to nobody's surprise. Yet I feel a little disenchanted. It seems a bit easier, a bit simplified, a bit less polished (some dialogue typos and such)...
But the original was very different towards the end compared to the beginning, so I'm not passing any judgement just yet.

Reviews I've read so far say the game, for better or for worse, seems too much like a total copy of Okami.

Great. So after getting rid of Clover, Capcom comes to the conclusion that they were really good and tries to make a carbon copy sequel to their biggest game for the current most popular console.

For [tornado fang]'s sake, Capcom.

It's not at all a carbon copy...

there is much less to do
Title: Re: Okamiden

Reviews pretty much say:

You go to the same places, get the same powers, and do the same stuff, essencially.

...and it's simplified and cut into the mere basic stuff.

Okay, guess I'm not getting it.

I loved this game. And no, it's not just because Chibi is so cute. (although that's part of the reason) The puzzles were well done, and I really enjoyed the gameplay.
:'( I'm just sad that Kurow died at the end. He was my favorite partner, and that was just sad...  ;O;

I actually did cry, too...  ;^;
Also, since I have yet to play the original Okami, I can't really compare it to this. But this seems to be getting spearheaded under the banner of "COMPARE TO THE PREDECESSOR!" So what if you revisit the same areas? It's still a bit different, because there's new mechanics at play such as Guidance and the partners and stuff. Not only that, but did you really expect them to make an entirely new world with entirely new locales?

And thus, you can't really formulate a valid opinion in the matter of this game being a shameless copy.

YES. That's what you do in new games. That's why they're NEW. That's why new Zeldas rule, while Crackdown 2 sucked because it was a shameless copy of the first game's world, barely changed.

That's a little discouraging. I was hoping it was just the early parts of the game...

Still, it's not a bad game, since it's still Okami, better than many out there. I'm interested in how the "improve village" thing is going to work out, reminds me of the Breath of Fire games.

Never said it was a bad game. But it's very disappointing to see it's a gimped "remake".

I feel a bit like when I felt when Gunstar Super Heroes came out. Why the hell would a company release a sequel to a fantastic game, which is pretty much exactly the same game, but not a remake, with worse visuals and gameplay, LESS to do, and pretty much only intended for people who haven't even played the first in the first place? It doesn't make any sense.

Post by: Mirby on March 24, 2011, 11:21:43 PM
Well, as the ending says, there's probably gonna be more entries, which might have more places and things to do. I'm pretty sure that this was more of an introduction to future installments, and an introduction to various new mechanics that will probably be dominant in future installments and to the characters of Chibiterasu and Kuni as well.

Okami was such a great game, any sequel of it is prone to certain expectations.

So basically, without it to compare to, Okamiden is a bit hard to analyse.

I've gotten pretty far through, and have to say I'm rather enjoying myself, it's very fun if you can stop thinking "I wish I was playing Okami instead". It's a little less in every dimension, but amazing for a handheld game.
Definitely worth buying if you can bury your expectations.
