Fire Emblem: Heroes.  (aka the ONE phone game I give a damn about)

Got bunny Camilla on my very last summon on the final day of Spring Festival.  So now I'm trying to build her without turning her into a Cecillia/Nino clone like everyone else tells you to.

I did gather up another 20 orbs since the Echoes event, but I'm debating if I actually want to use them now or just wait for a new banner.

At this point I just can't give a [parasitic bomb] about the Sonic story. I'm just glad classic Sonic is in it, so like Generations, this may actually be fun to play. If it doesn't have that, then I'm just out anyway.
I'm hoping that they figured out that as long as Classic Sonic is in the game, there is NO REASON WHATSOEVER to have the Modern Sonic levels jump into side-scrolling segments constantly.

On the other hand, what Modern Sonic gameplay we've seen looks like pretty generic corridor stuff.  We'll see, I guess.  But I'm still more excited for Mania.

The thing is that Colors' Red Rings were entirely optional and only worked towards getting you the Super Sonic reward that was never necessary

The fact that Colors' story does not acknowledge Super Sonic is irrelevant.  Nobody plays Sonic because of its deep narrative.  Every Sonic fan had been bitching ever since the turn of the millennium for Super Sonic to return to stages.  Colors was the first time that ever happened, it was kind of a big deal, not exactly a minor skill bonus like in Generations.  So they locked it behind the most ridiculously tedious requirement imaginable, that forces you to replay and scour EVERY STAGE IN THE GODDAMN GAME until you're sick of seeing a single one of the game's polygons...and then keep playing because you still didn't find them all.  THE ENTIRE POINT TO SUPER SONIC IN STAGES IS REPLAY VALUE, and it should never ever have been locked behind the most replay-killing requirement imaginable.

Apparently the newer JoyCons are connecting better.  Cnet, of all places, gave Nintendo props for repairing their launch unit, took inside photos before and after, and noted that a new standalone left JoyCon that they purchased in the meantime did not have the issue despite appearing visually like the defective unit.  Nintendo added what appears to be a piece of conductive foam to the defective unit and returned the same one, as far as they can tell.
https://www.cnet.com/news/nintendo-switch-joycon-desync-connectivity-issue-fix/

Evidently something very subtle went wrong during manufacturing one of the batches.  Nintendo has issued a statement confirming that it was in fact a manufacturing issue and not a design issue.  Good to know, but it's still always a hassle for those affected.

...what Bizarro World did you come from, exactly?  Colors is the REASON that I despise red rings.

You CAN soothe Epona but it would be more accurate to say there's no point to doing so, as she is in fact locked at max affection/obedience.

I know EXACTLY which jump Police Girl is talking about, it drove me nuts.  My solution is to do the course backwards.  Dead serious, there is no specific order that the jumps need to be taken in, and the incline is easier to take in reverse.  Also don't rush; the time limit is VERY forgiving.  You can slow to a trot if you need to.

Don't fret about it too much if you're sticking to Epona, though.  The reward is an extra saddle, and you can't change hers.

The problem with that jump is that an obedient horse tries to anticipate your will and stick to whatever path it's on.  This causes your horse to, of their own accord, follow the curve of the hill before the jump, which causes your horse to stop at the jump because you have to be running straight to make a jump.

Ordinarily I very much like the horse controls in the game; they did a very good job of immersing you by controlling Link riding a horse rather than controlling the horse directly (and it's nice to no longer have the ridiculously wide dead zone of Twilight Princess HD).  But the obstacle course feels like it simply was not designed with that in mind, since the horse's AI actively interferes with it.

There are precious few remixes of PS1-era music that I'm all that into, but I'm loving this one.

Revisiting Flying Battery is mind-blowing levels of nostalgic perfection.

Sonic Forces...looks pretty par-for-the-course for the 3D Sonic game.  Then I saw a Red Ring...

OH DEAR GOD, NOT THE RED RINGS!!!  Sonic and collectathons don't mix, dammit, when are they going to figure that out?!

Fast RMX, which is SO SO awesome to have as a Switch game.  Seriously, the "TV or handheld" nature of the system is a perfect fit for a racer.

Also dabbled a little into Shovel Knight Treasure Trove.  Love it, it's just hard to tear myself away from Zelda.

Yeah, I've been pretty much running around the overworld completing the map towers, memories, shrines, searching for the Great Fairy fountains, all that stuff.  I've barely touched the main quest, literally only STARTED (did not finish) my first Divine Beast quest yesterday.  But I've got the Master Sword, three of the Fountains, all but one memory photo (but really that forest one was dumb luck; I don't know what manner of landmark you're supposed to notice there), bought a house, almost two full pages of clothing/accessories, and yeah, just overall having a blast.

I STILL say the weapon system is bogus, but it's not a deal-breaker by any stretch.  And SWORD BEAMS, YAY!

Yeah, well, you don't really need a "reason."  I pretty much lost myself in the game yesterday, running around looking for far-off shrines and ores.  And the fact that that's even possible while STILL feeling that there's so much left undone and unexplored, is saying a lot.

Dungeons?  Beasts?  Yeah, I'll probably get there someday.

To be clear, the good far and away outweighs the bad.  But weapon durability is crap, there really should have been some way of maintaining your preferred weapons.  Also, compared to Twilight Princess, your abilities on horseback are limited.  You can't throw bombs, can't use any of the slate functions, really, and no Hook/Clawshot means you can't pick up items, which is the meat and bones of BotW.  Essentially you have to hop off every time you see anything remotely interesting, and that gets tiresome.

The world being so damn huge is a doubled edged sword.  I was pleasantly surprised by how well shrines are done.  They're lit up, you spot them from a high spot, mark your map, get adventuring, and that's effectively how you gather heart containers and warp points.  It's perfect.

But then there's those damn memory pictures.  I WANT THOSE SO BAD, it's a far bigger story hook to me than the beasts, and yet you're given no direction for them.  Just hope to God you recognize something from a screenshot in a ludicrously massive game world, sure, why not? O:<

I did climb Mount Lanayru, though, and that was fun.

The Joycon connection is the only thing that bugs me as far as the hardware goes.  The consensus that I'm hearing is that anything conductive (water, metal, human body) interferes with bluetooth and the Joycon's signal is just too weak.  My gigantic hands make this a problem for me in my living room as I need to watch how I hold the Joycons; if I hold the left one upright it becomes a big issue.

One of the YouTubers I follow did a teardown of the Joycons, which showed a small but separate antenna in the right, while the left's is etched into the circuit board...right next to the metal plate at the base of the analogue stick.  The signal can be DRASTICALLY improved by soldering a small wire into the opposite direction, although this is not recommended for obvious warranty/risk of damage concerns.

What bothers me most about this is the question of how the hell nobody noticed this in product testing.  This strikes me as same the kind of "works in a kiosk, doesn't work in a living room" error that convinced Miyamoto that Star Fox Zero was a good idea.

Yeah, I have a whopping two more.  Not enough.  Bow and Shield slots are manageable.

...btw, what is the point of boomerangs in this game?  They don't return if they strike something, and you can throw any weapon you want.

I still hate breakable weapons, ESPECIALLY since your limited weapon slots make it impossible to hoard them.  Not that it isn't fun to chuck a Bokoblin's own club at them and watch it break over their head, but some means of repairing/maintaining your favorites would have been nice.  I mean, two-handed swords are FINALLY back, and I can't use them freely for fear of not having them when I need them, how much of a tease is that?

I love amiibo-summoning Epona and Wolf Link as soon as the Great Plateau is over.  And infinite bombs, who doesn't love infinite bombs?  You really can get lose yourself in the world, hunting for shrines and all.

So, I got:
-Neon Switch
-Zelda Special (non-Master) Edition
-Princess Zelda Amiibo
-Pro Controller
-Fast RMX
-Shovel Knight Treasure Trove

LOVE having Fast Racing on the go.  Runs silky smooth.  I swear Shin'en is the new Factor 5, their stuff looks awesome.  It may just be me, but RMX doesn't seem to punish you quite as harshly as Neo for crashing.

Zelda is Zelda.  Excellent.  AND LIMITLESS BOMBS, that helps offset the whole weapon durability crap.  The game chugs a little at random grassy spots but it is very rare.  You have to progress a while before you can scan Amiibo.  Special Edition's carrying case has a velcro strap to hold the Switch in place on one side, a mesh pocket for accessories in the other, and cloth straps in the middle to hold game cards.  The map/tapestry looks water damaged, it's a thing I guess.

Switch signs into your Nintendo Account (as in My Nintendo rewards), NOT Nintendo Network ID.  You can give it your NNID to merge wallets (and it is a merge, not a transfer), but that's it.  Friends will be suggested if you're already connected in Nintendo's mobile phone games (which is hilarious since being Friends in Fire Emblem Heroes means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, that game asks you to send a friend request after literally every single Arena duel).  There is no importing from social media, Miiverse, or Nintendo Network.

Physical games can be registered for My Nintendo points through the system menu.

Image sharing links to either Facebook or Twitter.  Twitter will auto-hashtag with the game title, Facebook will not.  Both can be registered but only one can post at a time.

Miis can be imported through Amiibo (that is, the Amiibo's registered owner).

eShop will not let you Wishlist an unreleased game. (EDITS: They did fix this at some point.)

Joycon signal bug is real, as I found out when my daughter climbed up to me, so hopefully they fix it soon.  They are cozy to hold (I have gigantic hands, ask PB).  The L/R buttons are TINY, very narrow but usable.  SL/SR are centered horizontally with the controller edges and not the stick/face buttons, so your grip will differ a bit when using sideways.  I personally prefer the right; left has stick, SL, and edge of controller so close together that my left hand is in a near pinching position.  Not a fan of the grip, it works but I'd rather freestyle.  It has no electronics; the player lights are reflected from the Joycons' lights.  All connections are secure, you can hold the Switch by one Joycon without concern.  Wrist straps lock in HARD, though, to the point where they're tough to remove.  Grip and system release more easily but there's no way in heck you'd ever do so accidentally.

Pro Controller is surprisingly cozy.  Buttons are clicky, shoulder buttons are large with nice contours, sticks feel better than Wii U Pro (the center isn't raised as high).  It's also USB C, same as the system.  Comes with an A to C cable so you can charge via the dock.

Overall love the system.

Nintendo Switch is here!  ...and it went back to Friend codes (D'OH!).

The good news is you can stalk friends you made in their mobile games.

Personally I think the last wave (new story/dungeon) is what will make or break it, since that's the only actual content.  Not a fan of difficulty mode DLCs (really only ever bought them for Mega Man 9/10), and in Breath of the Wild in particular I think it's relatively pointless.  Isn't the whole idea that you can basically go to the final boss for a super-hard fight right away if you really want to?

Also, "Map feature."  *shrugs*

Nintendo's DLC track record is good but not spotless.  Hyrule Warriors really screwed its Wii U adopters, offering "update" DLC for the Legends characters/weapons but not offering updated maps, which left it all feeling way overpriced.

I'll......probably buy it, because if I sink serious time into Breath of the Wild I'm not going to want to miss the add-ons.  But for $20 that had better be one hell of an extra story.

Nintendo Europe put up some semi-detailed specs, though nothing on the actual processor (of course).

USB ports are 2.0 but claim they will be updated to 3.0 in the future.  What they intend to do with those ports is anyone's guess, they were still on the fence about USB storage last I checked.  They did confirm the existence of a LAN adapter, though, so I guess there's that (I'd just as soon beef up my home wifi so that the connection is consistent when undocked, though).

Curiously, the tablet claims to support Bluetooth 4.1 in TV docked mode only, while the JoyCons specifically use Bluetooth 3.0.  The hopeful speculation is that this is another pointer at Switch-connected headsets (the other being the wired headset by Afterglow and the fact that it is advertised to connect to the system) so that the phone app is not mandatory for chatting.  Thing is, if that is true, that would mean that without the phone app, you'd be looking at Bluetooth only for docked, and wired only for portable.

SDXC cards require a system update before they work for some reason.  I guess not a biggie since if you don't have internet, you wouldn't need an SDXC card.

Nintendo's UK site is also more specific with games, telling you which ones are carts and which ones are downloadable (to be fair, the U.S. site has pricing on a few of the game, whereas UK does not).  The digital downloads so far are I Am Setsuna, Snipperclips, and Fast RMX.  Out of those three, Snipperclips is the only one the U.S. gives pricing on (20 bucks).

Skylanders footage shows the use of the touch screen for menu navigation, which apparently Nintendo has not shown otherwise.  Speaking of Skylanders, Switch version doesn't require a portal, the game can use the JoyCon NFC point, so traveling with figures is slightly less inconvenient.

But MD never had trading... Right?

Same Gen games have always been within the same family of consoles, but well rumours are rumours, so I'll just wait and see if I need to invest in a Switch. 300USD... Man...
Not trading, but they did communicate with each other.

Gen 3 was NOT exclusive to one system family, in that Colosseum and Gale of Darkness were both unique adventures that allowed trading with the GBA games.

And besides, we're already paying for Pokemon Bank for transferring across generations.  Compared to that, a 3DS-to-Switch wireless link would be cake.  It's actually desirable in that like Colosseum it gives you a way to do your own trade-evolutions without duplicate hardware.

Copen is outright broken once you learn how to use him, in that his prevasion counter-balances to his air-dashing (which generally refills if you hit something) rather than to any actual attack, and unlike GV he can begin his recharge from midair (which is itself another attack method).  His armor programming is a LOT more flexible than GV's equipment, as well, in that there's no conflict of categories.  My preferred casual play style is Gutless Kudos with no checkpoints for maximum song time.  For GV, that means giving up one of two eye slots.  For Copen, one memory unit out of, what, 30-something?

Speaking of the first Gunvolt, I just finished it from the Striker Pack and while I think this one is good, just it does not live up to the vapid "OMG TEH ONLY TREU MEGA MAN SUCCESSOR" circle-jerk caused by Mighty No. 9's failure, especially when some didn't even think it was great to begin with (read: hypocrites). I like the dynamic of the shoot 'em up-styled combat, but the difficulty curve to me feels too demanding in perfecting your technique or else risking losing Kudos big time if you're halfway or near the end of a stage, meaning you'll likely have to start over from the beginning. This sucks even more when trying to do challenges that requires an S rank or better when a stray bullet or annoying enemies manages to hit you. It does feel very rewarding when racking up 1,000-3,000+ Kudos and hearing Lumen sing as you do well is a nice touch, which motivates me to keep trying, so it does do a good job of creating a risk/reward system here in earning higher scores, something that some people overlook in the point of score attack games like Gunvolt or even Mighty No. 9.
Your issues are specific to ASG1.  2 is much better.  Kudos defaults to a loss at 3 hits in that one.  You can change it to 1 hit, or to never.  The more unforgiving your Kudos style, the higher a score multiplier you can earn.

Missions are also handled better (they all activate automatically after their respective stage has been cleared), and equipment descriptions are more detailed/accurate.

Also Copen.  There is literally no point to playing Mighty after playing as Copen.  Dash-ramming an enemy works INFINITELY BETTER as a targeting method than as a finisher.

I've never heard anyone over-exaggerate it as that. Literally.

Seriously, never heard anyone say it's the true MM successor because it's not and was never meant to be.

That said, I really need to get back to the second game lol
I've...actually said that.  About ASG2, anyway, the first one was a bit rough (not unlike Z1 and ZX1; Inti always seems to rush the presentation a little when they start a new series).  Also when I say "successor", I don't mean "replacement".  More like a loving homage.  It's unique enough to stand on its own, but that's what I want.  At the same time, you can't not notice the similarities to Zero and ZX.

I don't accept the "spiritual successor is a replacement" mentality, and apparently I'm not the only one.

From day one, Mighty No. 9 was "meant" to play to the arrogance that being a Mega Man fan automatically made you a fan of Inafune's not-Mega-Man-for-copyright-reasons game.  The public fell for it at first because the Legends 3/XOver/Bad Box Art X Tekken wounds were still fresh, so people wanted to screw Capcom.  But that wore off.  It was no accident that perception of Comcept went down the toilet; it was inevitable as long as Inafune had no substance to back up his nostalgia grabs.  The fact that their communication, development process, and final product all sucked just expedited the process.
