Gaming / Summer Games Done Quick!
« on: June 22, 2014, 05:21:42 AM »
Starts tomorrow. Anyone gonna watch? I dunno if Sato is going this year, he's not listed as a player or a commentator at least.

Mega Man games to be played super fast this summer:

MM1
MM3
MM5
MM6 (race)
MMV (race)
MMZ2
MMX1 (race)
X2 (race)

Looking forward to MM6 and MMV races. Those games are almost never played competitively.

Challenge Mode / RPM Custom Challenge Adventure
« on: January 30, 2014, 11:37:06 PM »
I've done this on another forum and we had a great time. This is a series of challenges/achievements that we all create on the fly. Any RPM member can create the challenges and everyone can keep track of their progress.

Here's how this works:

1. Someone will post a Round of 6 challenges from one or various games. The challenges don't have to be extremely tough or long, just interesting and that take some effort to complete. Preferably, the chosen games should be widely known, or at least easily available in some way (wink, nudge).

2. We all work on these 6 challenges together (except the current Round Master). The Round is over when all 6 challenges are completed at least once. It doesn't matter who completes which challenge, as long as each challenge on the list is completed at least once. You cannot beat challenges of previous Rounds.

3. You beat a challenge, you post about it here ("Challenge 1-1 done, it was so hard OMG BlogFAQs"). No proof necessary, this is just for fun, but a pic or vid would be nice for others to see.

4. You can make your own editable post here to keep track of the challenges you've done, kinda like the Digital Distribution Thread. Keep in mind that this not necessarily a competition, because not everyone will have access to every game on the list. It's just a suggestion for keeping track of your completed challenges.

--

Example of a challenge list:

Round 1

1-1. Mega Man 9 -- Blast du Jour
Beat Galaxy Man's level on Time Attack mode using only ONE boss weapon of your choice. You cannot use the buster or Rush.

1-2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time -- Lon Lon Love
Start a new file. In less than 20 minutes, fill two Empty Bottles with delicious Lon Lon Milk. Timer starts when you first gain control of Link.

1-3. Super Mario World -- Vertically Challenged
Unlock the Green Switch Palace as small Mario and without Yoshi. Feel free to use power-ups to reach Donut Plains 2 fast, just make sure you do that level in those conditions.

etc.

You can name your challenges 360/PS3-style if you want. The only requirement is that they follow the 1-1, 1-2 numbering (Round 1 is 1-X, Round 2 is 2-X...). Whoever wants to do the next Round, just say so. I think priority should go to those who haven't been a Round Master yet.

Good idea, bad idea? :) We can start this if at least 2 or 3 people are in.

Original / If you could improve ONE weapon of each classic game...
« on: September 10, 2013, 02:31:32 PM »
That is, of course, assuming you're not allowed to design a completely new power. NOTE: The improvement doesn't necessarily have to be on a crappy weapon. Maybe there's a weapon that you already like and would like it even better with some tweaks!

MM1
Super Arm — Creates blocks out of thin air with 4 ammo; blocks that are part of the background don't spend any energy

MM2
Leaf Shield — May walk with shield on; if you throw the shield UP, 4 leaves float down à la Wood Man (costs extra energy)

MM3
Top Spin — Pulls all on-screen items, like the Charge Beam in Metroid Prime; weird hitbox fixed

MM4
Skull Barrier — I wouldn't make it Jewel Satellite broken, but it would at least block normal projectiles without disappearing. Also, since this weapon is Dive Man's weakness, it would have some kind of unique underwater effect, like increasing Mega Man's speed

MM5
Power Stone — The cluster would be lagtastic, but there's no way you wouldn't hit something with 2 casts on screen

MM6
Plant Barrier — Bounce like the Plant Man springs while using it? I dunno, it's hard to think of a shield improvement that isn't "be Jewel Satellite"

MM7
Freeze Cracker — "The Freeze Cracker fires ice bullets, doesn't it?" "Yes, but it is freaking SLOW. Here, let me increase the speed and rate of fire for you."

MM8
Thunder Claw — Allow swinging on any ceiling

MM&B
Magic Card — These cards would be more magic if you could throw them diagonally

MM9
I'm interested in reading your input. I can't think of any improvements, all weapons here are very powerful and useful to me

MM10
Thunder Wool — Cloud phase would be completely in-des-tructible (I do not recommend clicking that link)

Challenge Mode / Beating Mega Man 3 like a survival horror
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:53:23 PM »
Being a huge fan of survival horror (classic Resident Evil, Dino Crisis, Silent Hill), I've always wanted to try this. In survival horror games, the good ones at least, supplies are ridiculously limited and/or placed in tricky areas. As a result, you end up conserving the ammo you have and often run away from enemies instead.

I'm not sure I would recommend this because it was kind of a pain for one reason (see below), and I couldn't think of a better solution for that problem. But the challenge itself was quite interesting and unique, and I wanted to share.

The Rules

1. All current ammo MUST carry over to the next level (as if the entire game is one huge Wily fortress)
2. Buster is NOT allowed after the first level (exception: Break Man cannot be damaged with anything else)
3. NO enemy drops allowed
4. Fixed items are allowed (ammo, E-Tanks, etc. that are found normally in the game)
5. Mystery Tanks (?) are allowed
6. Deaths are okay, game over is NOT
7. Top Spin ignored for obvious reasons (unpredictable ammo consumption)

The Run

The Robot Master order was the hardest part. NE and SH are good buster substitutes, and also the most reliable weapons against Proto Man, so they had to be conserved just right. Almost ran out a few times. I also made a mistake picking Top Man early, but at that point I was still deciding if I was going to ignore his weapon.

I chose the Doc Robot order based on how much ammo I could find to refill some of the weapons. My heart was racing in the first half of Doc Gemini, because dying would pretty much mean a game over/reset. NE is the only special weapon that destroys the eggs, and there are no fixed pick-ups there to refill. I had to use a safety E-Tank against Doc Flash, which is really embarrassing. RJ section at Doc Needle, however, is a godsend. Sadly, the fortress is so empty and throws so many pick-ups at you that the challenge is pretty much over by the third or fourth Doc Robot stage.

Why it was kind of a pain: before delivering the last hit to a boss, I had to write down ALL my ammo. And at the start of the next level, I had to waste my weapons until they had that exact amount. Wouldn't be so bad if there was a number attached to each weapon (like MM8). I think the PS1/AC version Navi Mode has that option...? But I really don't care for the GC controls. Anyway, counting those little bars got old fast. Sometimes I would even avoid using certain weapons 'cause I was too lazy to count, haha.

Notes and Progress
(Format: stage » weapons/ammo by the end of that stage)

I wonder if it's possible to program these limitations in a ROM hack...?

Gaming / RPM's Super Cool Videogame Awards 2012
« on: December 26, 2012, 03:31:36 PM »
Been a while since we've done this, I think. Copypasta the awards/questions and share your opinions. :D

1. Game of the year
Resident Evil: Revelations (via elimination, sadly)

2. Best game that you've played in 2012 for the first time (doesn't have to be a 2012 release)
Dark Souls

3. Game you've played the most this year
Dark Souls, close to 200 hours now.

4. Best unlockable or DLC of 2012
Artorias of the Abyss, Dark Souls. The boss fights are excellent, and Oolacile made the already sweet world of Dark Souls even more interesting.

5. Most disappointing game/game-related thing of the year
Ninja Gaiden 3 by far... the least strategic action game of all time. Streets of Rage had deeper gameplay than this.

6. Most surprisingly good game of the year
Resident Evil: Revelations. I wasn't expecting the game to play like a mix of old-school and post-RE4 styles. Exploring the ship was very cool, and the music was excellent. Ah, if only at least one campaign in RE6 was like this...

7. The Graphics Whore Award for most visually impressive game of 2012
I can't think of a 2012 game that blew me away in that category. RKS2, maybe?

8. From 1 to 10, how would you rate 2012's gaming as a whole?
6/10 sounds fair. Some good games, but the big releases were all disappointing to me.

9. A 2012 game that you wish you had purchased, or plan to
Despite not caring too much about NSMB2, New Super Mario Bros. U should be fun and I might get that if the Wii U comes up with something huge next year (i.e. an actual reason to buy it). Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo, hint!

10. What 2013 game or gaming-related thing are you looking forward to the most?
Dead Space 3

11. A moment of silence for the Wii: what was the best game on the little white box?
Super Mario Galaxy (2 was probably better, 1 is my favorite)

12. What's your favorite game ever?
Mega Man 3

8
Rockman Series / Weapons that have unique effects underwater
« on: November 03, 2012, 01:18:33 PM »
Am I forgetting any?

Also, what's your favorite of these? :D

Ice Wall (MM&B) - floats
Wave Burner (MM&B) - no fire, but shoots a heat wave that damages enemies and moves spikes around
Oil Slider (Powered Up) - glob floats, you may jump on the oil to slide across water surfaces
Fire Storm (Powered Up) - doesn't work at all, Fire Man loses the ability to shoot
Fire Wave (X1/MHX) - doesn't work at all
Speed Burner (X2) - no fire effect, you can see the naked torpedoes
Bubble Splash (X2) - bubbles travel higher, X jumps higher when charged
Frost Shield (X3) - bigger shot, charged creates a block/platform that floats

Gaming / Anyone up for organizing a bingo event?
« on: March 11, 2012, 05:46:45 AM »
So I've been watching some game streams at SpeedDemosArchive.com in my boredom time. Lots of speed run practice and also casual play, which made me interested in streaming my own gameplay. No idea how to even start, though.

Anyway, some players there do this race challenge thing that I thought was just brilliant: a bingo. I've only seen it done in Zelda games so far, but they basically create a 5x5 table with 25 achievements (that they come up with), start a new game and then see who can complete a row or a column first.

The guy who won tonight (in Ocarina of Time) ended up running a column that required 4 Skulltulas in Jabu-Jabu, 7 full Hearts, 6 Keys at the Gerudo Training Ground, a bullet bag upgrade, and the Fire Medallion. The whole route planning is just awesome to watch (must be even better to play).

I was thinking maybe we could organize something like that one day. We don't need anything fancy like a stream party, we all have PSN and the board to keep track of each other. We pick a game that is relatively open (Zelda, Metroid, Arkham City), create some fun achievements of our own and then race just for the fun of it. Could even be done with Mega Man games if we're creative enough with the little achievements.

Anyway, just an idea. :)

(Also, apologies if there's a proper board for this kind of stuff.)

Gaming / Anyone beat Rokko Chan's challenges?
« on: January 06, 2012, 09:54:10 PM »
Hey there. :)

I've been playing the awesome Mega Man clone Rokko Chan. This game is really good, could easily be made into Mega Man 11 if the main character was the Blue Bomber.

http://king-soukutu.com/flash/rokko.html

Finished the game four times, three of them on Owata Mode (basically MM9's Mr. Perfect, but easier, since you have infinite lives and they allow checkpoints). The first time on Owata, the game glitched on me (double KO'd the final boss, and the game didn't trigger Rokko in when the level restarted). Second time, I used a password to the Fortress to save time and the game didn't register the full Owata run. Then on my third attempt I just played through the whole thing in one sitting and got the little crowns.

My question is about the little crowns. Does their color mean anything or do we just unlock them once? I really can't think of a more "golden" accomplishment than clearing the game on Owata, yet the first crown is still bronze. Or are they essentially "Trophies" like on the PS3, each with their own value?

Sorry if there's a topic on this already, the search box at least didn't find anything.

Original / Mega Man 10 stage route.
« on: April 09, 2010, 05:53:18 PM »
Naturally, there will be SPOILERS in here.

I've been trying to figure out a stage order for MM10. It's really damn hard in this game, there are so many possibilities and I can't seem to find my rhythm with the weapons.

Important: Yes, I know the weakness order, it's not about that. What I do in Mega Man games is figure out a stage order where I can make good use of all weapons within levels. In MM2 through 4 and 9, I can beat pretty much the whole game without ever switching back to the Buster once I collect my first weapon. It's a lot of fun, and I hope I can do this with 10, too.

What's your route?

This is for Mega Man, by the way...

Blade
Must be an early guy. Triple Blade is just too useful. I'm comfortable enough with the weapon to consider it a Buster substitute. It's all about getting close, Shotgun approach.

Nitro
Love crossing his stage with only the Mirror Buster. Literally only ONE enemy in this level will stand in your way with you holding the button and running forward. It's awesome. And with the whole Wheel Cutter frenzy, it's nice to have Mirror to clear the room out of projectiles during the boss fight. So I pretty much don't need anything else here. Early guy, pre-Rush Jet?

Solar
Early temptation. I know his weapon is great at Blade's, but it's hard to resist going through his level with Wheel Cutter in hand, which would make Blade the third boss at least. Can't afford that, must have Triple Blade earlier. And I suck against Solar without the weakness. This one is a thinker.

Strike
Mystery. Triple Blade is good here, but nothing dies fast, seems like I need to stop and hit enemies twice with whatever weapon I have. I hate the stupid buckets and baseball players.

Chill
Another mystery. I know I need Triple Blade to clear the ice fast and Solar Blaze because it's an all around owner there. But I'm not sure what I can do with Chill Spike when I get it. There's Nitro's level, but I was thinking of doing it early to get Wheel Cutter for Solar, who's strong against Chill, and... *breathes* Air Man can't die.

Commando
Currently my last guy. I like his weapon, but I don't use it much during the other 7 levels. Not to mention I use several weapons in his level, and Rush Jet makes my life too easy to pass.

Sheep
Rush Jet here, so he's my fifth guy at least. His weapon is my least favorite, meaning I could just Spark Man him into a last visit, and I would have Commando Bomb for the mini-boss.

Pump
Not really a concern, I can find good fun in his level going early or later. Whatever's more convenient. I am, however, partial to having Triple Blade against him so I can destroy the shield faster, if I don't have Thunder Wool (and since I'm leaving Sheep for later, this is likely to happen).

Think, think...

12
Sounds like fun.

MM1: Prototype
MM2: Classic
MM3: Favorite
MM4: Polish
MM5: M-Tank
MM6: Rush is the star
MM7: All about the secrets
MM8: Cartoon
MM&B: Made for Bass
MM9: Retro

Gaming / Nintendo Channel records?
« on: November 07, 2009, 01:57:35 PM »
So I downloaded the Nintendo Channel on the Wii now that it's free (if you paid the $5 before, you can now get an NES game for free).

It's pretty sweet, there are videos and stuff. But my favorite thing is that they take all your saves and gameplay data and inform you how much time you spent playing each game.

Do you guys have the Nintendo Channel? Post your records, it should be interesting!

Here are mine, top 10:

1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 180 hours 55 min
2. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: 154 hours 22 min
3. Super Mario Galaxy: 141 hours 31 min
4. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption: 109 hours 15 min
5. Mega Man 9: 91 hours 2 min
6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (VC): 84 hours 1 min
7. Mario Kart Wii: 47 hours 58 min
8. MadWorld: 41 hours
9. No More Heroes: 34 hours 19 min
10. World of Goo: 33 hours

Twilight Princess and Galaxy aren't entirely true for me because my brother played them as well. My playtime was 40-50 hours less on each. Also, 41 hours on MadWorld? That's insane, the game clock is stupidly misleading then. But in all it sounds about right.

Gaming / So what's left in 2009, RPM?
« on: August 14, 2009, 11:43:35 PM »
What are the RPMers buying on this second half of 2009, game-wise?

I ask because some of my most anticipated titles of the year have been pushed back to the far far away land of 2010, Bayonetta and BioShock 2 mainly. And I have very few to look forward to this year. I mean, some games do interest me, but none reach the OMG DAY ONE level that many 2010 releases have already achieved (Bayo, BioShock 2, God of War III, Other M, Galaxy 2, No More Heroes 2...).

My targets, in order of can't-waitness:

5. Dead Space: Extraction
The original Dead Space is my favorite game on the PS3 along with Resident Evil 5. Paying the Ishimura a visit during the outbreak sounds like fun.

4. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
I'm very intrigued by the concept, but I have an alarm going off "ORIGINS! ORIGINS!" that prevents me from getting too excited. I'll wait for critic and public reception.

3. Scribblenauts
It sounds like the perfect pick-up game. Let's hope that dictionary is actually well programmed, though. I don't want to summon a tornado and watch as it does nothing!

2. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
I didn't even like Umbrella Chronicles that much, but I'm an RE2 whore.

1. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Probably the only surefire deal here. Mario games are just too charming and polished to pass. Plus I'm a big fan of New Super Mario Bros.

(By the way, do we have a topic for the Mega Man Marathon, which starts in about two hours?)

Rockman Series / The way you play Mega Man games
« on: May 03, 2009, 03:21:08 AM »
We all know the classics like shooting according to the tune and moonwalking through boss gates in ice levels, but do you have your own unique quirks or ways to play Mega Man games?

For example, in classic games I barely use the pea shooter anymore. From the moment I get my first weapon until the final battle, I don't switch back to P unless I'm forced, and I try to manipulate my boss order to use all weapons to their fullest. (So P substitutes like Thunder Beam and Laser Trident tend to be my first weapons.)

Some of my quirks...

MM2: I try to kill the revenge bosses standing on the exit because the transition from dead robot to teleport room is so instantaneously surreal.

MM9: I place a Concrete Shot on the floor and air walk through the boss gate... ::)

X2: I tend to go back to stages after beating the 8 Mavericks so I can use all weapons and see their effects. Also, I rarely get the three Zero Parts because I love fighting him so much. I usually fight Serges and Agile for fun and leave Violen alone, since his second fight is just like the first.

X3: I don't collect the full armor set very often because there's just too much backtracking in X3 and the Z-Saber is a pain to use with all the buster charge levels. So in my runs I normally get the Foot Part and Chip and nothing else. Full mobility and fast Z-Saber FTW.

X1-X3: There is one particular frame of X's 16-bit jump animation that I adore (second row, 6th frame from left to right), and I try to jump through boss gates at that exact frame... I'm actually pretty good at this!

X4: I always let the bird in Frost Walrus's stage freeze the place. Such a beautiful sight.

Gaming / Best combat system of an action game?
« on: March 18, 2009, 05:01:01 AM »
Just curious after two intense God Hand playthroughs.

What is the best combat system in an action or action/adventure game in your opinion, and why? What's your style?

Do you prefer simple and flashy, like God of War? Z-targeting for enemy focus and insta aiming, like Zelda 3D? Or a more tactical Devil May Cry way? VFX madness in Viewtiful Joe? Ninja Gaiden? Crazy over-the-top stylish, like God Hand and No More Heroes?

We do have plenty to choose from, which is pretty cool. :D

Original / Maybe I just like Mega Man games too much...
« on: February 22, 2009, 11:43:35 PM »
... but I've been toying with this idea since forever.

I made a full chart of every single enemy in Mega Man 3 (all 40) and how much damage each weapon causes. Since weapons in Mega Man games rarely have absolute value in comparison, the number next to each weapon shows how many shots it takes to kill the enemy.

I know it's borderline insanity, but I actually had a lot of fun doing this and wouldn't mind seeing more. I found out interesting bits about enemy-weapon interaction in MM3, like how pretty much half of Wily's lesser army have an exclusive weakness or a very recommended counter, keeping in line with the premise of the series. If you were ever looking for proof that Top Spin is a powerhouse, well, 19 out of 38 OHKOs is a fine number.

Enjoy!

Chart 3
Chart 4
Chart 5
Chart 6
Chart 7
Chart 8

Note: For the bullet-like enemy in Snake Man's level, one extra hit per weapon is necessary in order to dispose of the cloudy cloak.
Another note: If you're curious about how much damage the regular P weapon causes, just look at the Needle Cannon. They both deal the same exact amount of damage to regular enemies.

(Also, if this has been done before, please just politely whistle and nod along!)

Gaming / The Top 10 Topic
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:34:01 PM »
Inspired by ScrewAttack.com and the GameFAQs feature where users post their Top 10 lists. Since I'm always curious about RPMers' opinions, I thought it'd be an interesting idea!

Basically, the sky is the limit. Post your personal Top 10 lists about anything, as long as it's related to videogames. It can be Top 10 Best or Top 10 Worst.

For example, I'm starting with...

Top 10 Worst Levels (In Great Games)

10. Aquas - Star Fox 64 [N64]
Frankly, the only reason this isn't "higher" is because we may skip it. Still, the more interesting paths in the game involve this stroll, so I couldn't ignore it. Aquas is an underwater level in a Star Fox game. That alone should bury the concept, but the new vehicle and [as always] the dialogue would be enough to keep things exciting. The problem is that these waters are incredibly busy, so the framerate is reduced to a crawl. The scenery is dull, the submarine itself is slow as heck and there are targets everywhere. Since we're dealing with a rail shooter, this level takes about eight years to finish.

9. Desert of Lost Souls - God of War [PS2]
I know the Sirens are always located in the exact same spots. I still have trouble finding them and I still don't see the point. Very short segment that manages to ruin the flow, so it's #9.

8. Dynasty - Mega Man X8 [PS2]
The symbol of X8's mixed level design. I don't personally consider Dynasty as awful as most haters out there, but this level ignores the game's huge power-up buffet in exchange for an underwhelming 40-second ride, so it fails.

7. 5-2 Stalling - Resident Evil 4 [GC]
The Island segment as a whole is a bit stretchy, but 5-1 and 5-3 were able to find their mojo in non-stop action and boss fights. 5-2, on the other hand, is a weird limbo. Some of the best combat scenarios in RE4 are those where you're trapped in a big area and must face many enemies while manipulating your surroundings, like the Pueblo and Mike's cameo. In 5-2 there are two of those, but not only they happen in very small rooms (the wrecking ball and the bulldozer switch), you must also pay attention to the ballistics-equipped piece of meat behind you.

6. Underground Passage - Silent Hill 3 [PS2]
I guess no one would care to understand some generic-looking buried facility as long as there are lots of enemies to face. The confusing layout of the place adds another reason to rush for the game's more detailed environments as soon as possible.

5. Rank #5 - No More Heroes [Wii]
This is not about the cutscene! I love what they did there. The section leading to it, however, is a bore. No More Heroes already is a kinda repetitive game, and the combat rarely shines against individual thugs. Fighting one enemy at a time in that long corridor marks my save-and-quit-for-now point in the journey.

4. Poisonous Pipeline - Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie's Double Trouble [SNES]
This is the level I chose to represent DKC3's exaggeration in gimmick design. If not for them, I could have placed this along with DKC2 as my favorite 2D platformer ever. Poisonous Pipeline in particular is a level where your left and right controls are inverted. Now with 100% lazy.

3. Temple Grounds - Metroid Prime 2: Echoes [GC]
Aether's hub plays one of the most out-of-place songs in gaming, has zero visual identity and even pukes at our sense of scale with those rushed pixelated backgrounds. It's also tedious. This area is the main reason I don't play Echoes as often as I wanted, so that makes it a solid #3.

2. Labyrinth Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog [GEN]
Okay, so Marble Zone isn't exactly a race, but Labyrinth takes Sonic's speed and laughs at it. Not only the water makes gameplay slower, we have to worry about that devious countdown that gives me nightmares since 1991.

1. Water Temple - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time [N64]
Perhaps the king of frustration in any given category. To be honest I didn't have a lot of trouble figuring how to beat the Temple, it's just an unbelievable chore. Its appeal drowned somewhere between opening the menu to equip the Iron Boots way too often and flooding the place way too often. You could say it's an acceptable evil for a worthy climax, but... sadly, Morpha sucks just as much.

Post away!

Original / Absolutely gorgeous MM9 rock medley.
« on: January 04, 2009, 04:18:22 AM »
Sorry if this has been posted or if there's a proper topic!

User Fredde from YouTube made a rock medley of almost all tunes in Mega Man 9. To be completely honest, even though I appreciate the AST, this is what I expected it to sound like.

*WARNING*
Video contains many many MM9 spoilers.

Deal is known by you!

1. What's the first 3D platformer you played, and when?
Super Mario 64, in 1996

2. Favorite 3D platformer
Super Mario 64

3. Is your favorite 3D platformer among your top 5 games of all time?
Yes

4. Best soundtrack
Super Mario Galaxy

5. Favorite hub
Grunty's Lair [BK]

6. Favorite area or stage
Grunty Industries [BT]

7. Favorite underwater area
Jolly Roger's Lagoon [BT]

8. Favorite move or power-up
Long Jump [SM64, Galaxy]

9. Do you prefer a more traditional platforming focus (Crash, Galaxy) or a treasure hunt approach (BK, DK64)?
I enjoy my collect-a-thons, but I find that these games flow much better when they focus on pure platforming.

10. Most 3D platformers rely on mini-games that have little to do with platforming. What's your favorite? (e.g. Barrel Blast, Saucer of Peril...)
Top of my head... Grunty's Furnace Fun.

11. Best race challenge (e.g. Koopa the Quick, Il Piantissimo, mine cart racing, Canary Mary...)
Frosty Cosmic Mario Race [Galaxy]

12. Which 3D platformer had the best camera system in your... view? (Ha!)
Super Mario Sunshine

13. Favorite story
Conker's Bad Fur Day

14. Favorite boss fight
Mr. Patch [BT]

15. Favorite final battle (may contain *spoilers*, be careful!)
Bowser [Galaxy]

16. What is your least favorite thing about your favorite 3D platformer?
Clunky controls

17. How far do you go on replay sessions?
I normally stick to the main goal (70 Stars in SM64, 70 Jiggies in BT, etc.), unless there's little difference between mandatory and 100% (like BK).

18. Favorite secret or unlockable?
SuperBanjo cheat [BT]

19. How long is your ideal 3D platformer?
About 3 hours to finish the game with mandatory requirements, ~10 hours for 100%.

20. Least favorite 3D platformer
Jak & Daxter

Gaming / 'Run and gun' favorites

As I'm in a masochist-old-school mood for shooters lately, I got curious.

What are your top favorite 'run and gun' games? And why, if you care enough?

Contra, Gunstar Heroes, Metal Slug, obscure titles like Rush'n Attack or Sunset Riders... there's a lot to choose from.

I didn't want to include all shooters (space sh'mups and all) because it would end up too big. :D

... while he blasts alien scum!

So I finally got Contra 4. How cool is that!

Anyone played it? What to expect? Is it a ball buster like Contra III on Hard? Any new weapons?

Gaming / RPM's Colossal Videogame Awards 2008

This is inspired by the wave of VG awards about to hit our digi world. I know the year isn't over, but it shouldn't be a big deal, just change your vote later if a December release tingles your fancy. Sorry if there's already a tradition for this sort of thing! I'll try to keep most questions about 2008.

You can explain your choices if you want.

-x-

1. Best game you've played this year
(Doesn't have to be a 2008 release, as long as you played the game for the first time this year.)
Mega Man 9

2. Worst game you've played this year
(Same rules apply.)
Killer7

3. Best 2008 release
Mega Man 9

4. Worst 2008 release
Only played three '08 releases, all great.

5. Game you spent the most time with in 2008
(Doesn't have to be a 2008 release.)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

6. 2008 release you wish you had purchased
Devil May Cry 4

7. Best downloadable 2008 release
(Virtual Console, etc.)
Mega Man 9

8. Best current-gen console/portable in 2008
Wii

9. Most underrated 2008 release
(The idea here is to point a game that people hated or didn't really care for, but you loved. A game with positive reception is not underrated.)
N/A

10. Most overrated 2008 release
(Same as above, only, er, opposite keywording!)
Grand Theft Auto IV

11. A 2008 release that you didn't even have to play to discard
Alone in the Dark

12. Best gameplay or control mechanic of a 2008 release
Wii Wheel, Mario Kart Wii

13. Your main in Super Smash Bros. Brawl?
Sonic

14. From 1 to 10, how would you rate 2008 as a game year?
9

15. Is your favorite 2008 release among your favorite games ever?
Hell yeah!

16. Is your favorite 2008 release better than your favorite 2007 release?
(Don't forget to remind us of your 2007 pick.)
I think so. Not objectively speaking, but in my mind Mega Man 9 slightly >'s Super Mario Galaxy.

17. Do you plan on getting a next-gen console next year? Which one?
PS3 or X360, whichever is cheaper...

18. How could Nintendo have saved their E3 2008 conference?
Show a random tech promo with Zelda characters!

19. Next year I'll be looking forward to...
The Conduit

20. Favorite game ever
Mega Man 3
