Small diversion in the schedule, with a new stream guest; Amber!

Saturday @ 5 PM EST

It is Street Fighter V day once again, training Amber, and getting our asses KICKED online. Should be good. Tim is on vacation this week, so Amber is filling the shoes.

See you tomorrow!

I got some good news and bad news if you plan on picking up Twinkle Star Sprites for Shmupvember. The good news is that it was just released to Steam and it has online multiplayer. Bad news is the emulation isn't that good (unless DotEmu gives [parasitic bomb] to fix it) and some people are report laggy netcode. Even worse is that, unlike the DRM-free one on the Humble Store, you can't take the ROMs out and stick them in a better emulator like MAME.
I wish somebody would port the Saturn version.

That brings up an important question.... If you BUY a rom and emulator to play the rom like the DRM Free Humble Store one... Wouldn't that allow you to use that rom in another emulator legally? I see no reason why not.

So then get the Humble one and use MAME's online functionality???

I never knew about MAME having online support to be honest, though I would like to try that out. If there is online support for RetroArch, I would like to try that out little more over than MAME since the Final Burn Alpha SVN core on RetroArch has a better GUI than MAME and doesn't crash on you like MAME does if you forget to plug in a controller when booting a game if you made some changes in the config files.

Anyways, If you buy the DRM-free build that's on the Humble Store, not the one on Steam, then you do get the ROM files for the game and an emulator to run it (the front-end DotEmu give you kinda sucks since you can't rebind keys and [parasitic bomb], plus you don't get as much options as you would with, let's say MAME), and you can use the ROM files with another emulator like MAME legally since you are buying the ROMs legit from the publishers instead of getting them off a file-sharing site or torrent.

Quote from: BiggNife's FAQ @ NeoGAF
Wait, ROMs and emulators? Is this illegal?

Nope. Emulators by themselves are perfectly legal, and since you purchased the ROMs straight from the publisher they're legally yours.

There is something that you should also be aware of if you're trying to run these games on newer versions of MAME.

Quote from: Common Issues and Questions (FAQ) - MAME Documentation
Why do my Neo Geo ROMs no longer work? How do I get the Humble Bundle Neo Geo sets working?
Recently the Neo Geo BIOS was updated to add a new version of the Universal BIOS. This was done between 0.171/0.172, and results in an error trying to load Neo Geo games with an un-updated neogeo.zip set.

This also affects the Humble Bundle set: the games themselves are correct and up to date as of MAME 0.173 (and most likely will remain so) though you’ll have to pull the ROM set .ZIP files out of the package somehow yourself. However, the Neo Geo BIOS set (neogeo.zip) included in the Humble Bundle set is incomplete as of the 0.172 release of MAME.

We suggest you contact the provider of your sets (Humble Bundle and DotEmu) and ask them to update their content to the newest revision. If enough people ask nicely, maybe they’ll update the package.
I ran into this issue before when I tried to run some NeoGeo games with newer MAME versions, but I was able to bypass that issue by forcing on MAME with the outdated neogeo.zip ROM with command line parameters (you could make a *bat file to run the commands as well). A front-end like MAMEUI or LaunchBox also worked for me as well.

Yeah all that seems to check out. Are there any other emulated arcade games worth looking at? Co-op stuff?

There's not a whole lot that DotEmu are shoveling out when it comes to emulator-wrapped ports of arcade games that I can find that also give you the ROM files to use them another emulator like the DRM-free stuff on the Humble Store. Besides the DRM-free versions of the Metal Slug games, the only co-op stuff I can find are the Shock Trooper games (top-down shoot 'em ups), Pulstar, Blazing Star, and Ironclad (horizontal shooters), King of the Monsters (a kaiju wrestling game), and Sengoku 3 (beat 'em up), though I haven't play those games but I might get my hands dirty to try them out. They also have 2-minute demo of most of the games for Firefox or Google Chome browsers if anyone wants to try them out. But speaking of emulator-wrapped ports, a few weeks ago, did Sega put a new emulator front-end for the Sega Genesis games they got on Steam, and what's cool is that they also give you the ROM file of the Genesis games you own with them on Steam. Most of the co-op stuff are beat 'em ups like Streets of Rage and Golden Axe though, plus a Gauntlet-styled game called Crackdown (not to be mistaken for the game on Xbox 360), and if you squint Sonic 2, and 3 & Knuckles.

Aww, I missed. >8|

Anywho, it looks like DotEmu patched Twinkle Star Sprites on Steam. The arcade emulation has been improved to be closer to the arcade version though I'm seeing some reviews that the sound isn't synced perfectly and the problem of the resolution not saving has been fixed.

Does this mean your computer has been fixed or replaced? And what about the Ray race in Mighty No. 9? Also, if you liked Zero Mission, you'll enjoy this remake, too. I know I did.

I have a make shift Franken-Computer setup that is enough to play AM2R. I think it would choke completely on MightyNo9 sadly. That will have to wait until I can repair the big rig, sadly...

I loved Zero Mission so I fully expect to love this one. I have NEVER played Metroid II on Gameboy so I am going in blind.

I hope no important files to you and your work were lost from your computer. Oddly enough I never got to play the original Metroid II on the Gameboy either, but the same thing happened with me for Zero Mission since I never played the original NES Metroid until Zero Mission included it as an unlockable. AM2R also has since options if you want to make it feel like Super Metroid, Metroid II, or Zero Mission in terms of controls, something that I also dug about Streets of Rage Remake.
